Fox Corp. Makes its Debut

Fox Corp., the successor to 21st Century Fox, began trading Tuesday as a separate company, completing the distribution of outstanding shares of Fox Corp. to its shareholders earlier in the day and adding four new members to its board of directors.

Fox agreed to sell its cable networks FX, FXX and National Geographic, its 20th Century Fox film and TV production studios and its 30% interest in online video pioneer Hulu to Disney for $71.3 billion in cash and stock in July. With the share distribution complete, Fox said it is on track to officially close the Disney deal by 12:02 a.m. on March 20.

After the Disney sale, Fox Corp. will house the remaining assets -- the Fox broadcast network, 28 television stations, and cable channels Fox News, Fox Business, FS1 and FS2 and the Big Ten Network. Fox Corp. will keep its old trading symbol (FOXA) on the NASDAQ Exchange.

Joining co-chairman Rupert Murdoch, his son Fox Corp. chairman and CEO Lachlan Murdoch and former Ford Motor Co. CEO Jacques Nasser on the board will be former 21st Century Fox chief operating officer and current Formula 1 chairman and CEO Chase Carey; former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Paul Ryan, Aragon Holdings founder Anne Dais and former Telemundo Group chief and Hernandez Media Ventures CEO and founder Roland Hernandez.

“We are thrilled to welcome our new colleagues to the Fox board," Lachlan Murdoch said in a press release. "We look forward to working with and being guided by them as we begin a new chapter, steadfastly committed to providing the best in news, sports and entertainment programming.”

Speaker Ryan Looking Into Sanctions Over House Sit-In

House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) said Thursday (July 7) that he has been meeting with the House Rules Committee, parliamentarians and others about possible sanctions over Democrats' sit-in protest on the House floor two weeks ago over gun violence legislation.

Meanwhile, House Democrats continued to talk on the floor about gun violence after the House recessed following morning business Thursday.

Ryan called the protest a troubling trend and said that if the House floor became a partisan war zone there would be no chance of bipartisanship. Some House Democrats had live streamed the June 22-23 sit-in via Facebook and Periscope after Ryan ordered the House cameras turned off, a violation of House floor rules. C-SPAN aired the live streams throughout the protest.

Ryan signaled he would not allow the rule of law to be "thrown out the window," and opined that the House floor had become virtually the only place that he could get to know members of the other party.

NBC/Survey Monkey: Trump Gains on Clinton Nationally

Presumptive GOP Nominee Donald Trump trails Democrat Hillary Clinton by only three points nationally, 48% to 45%, according to a new NBC News/Survey Monkey online poll, compared to a 5 point lead only a week ago.

Trump leads with independents 44% to 36%.

Clinton leads Trump with black voters, Hispanics, women and those with a college degree. Trump wins with white voters, men, and those with a high school degree or less, according to the poll.

Very conservative Republican registered voters say they favor Trump to lead the party over House Speaker Paul Ryan 63% to 34%.

The survey was an online weekly election tracking poll May 9-15 of 14,100 adults, with a margin of error of plus or minus 1.1 percentage points for the entire survey and 2.3 points for the Republicans registered voters.

The election of Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) as the new speaker of the House Thursday (Oct. 29) drew immediate response from communications tech industry players.

Consumer Electronics Association President Gary Shapiro welcomed the chairman, but has some "asks" as well.

"We congratulate Speaker Ryan. He can help grow our economy by advancing policies that promote our nation's leadership in technological innovation," Shapiro said in a statement. "We encourage Speaker Ryan to work with House members to prioritize legislation that will encourage innovation, entrepreneurship and a vibrant free-market system."

"Specifically,," he said, "we urge action and legislation restricting patent trolls, encouraging free trade, investing in infrastructure, allowing online taxation to equalize the playing field for brick-and-mortar retailers, reducing the national debt and expanding wireless broadband."

“On behalf of TechNet, I congratulate Congressman Paul Ryan on becoming Speaker of the House,” said TechNet President Linda Moore. “Congressman Ryan is a thoughtful, dedicated public servant who is committed to solving the very real challenges facing our nation.”

Moore also had some suggested priorities for the new speaker, including "international tax reform, free trade, patent reform, and high-skilled immigration reform."

"Over his tenure on Capitol Hill, Congressman Ryan has a proven track record of taking on important policy issues, and looking for principled, pragmatic, and lasting solutions," said Michael Timmeny, head of government and Community relations for Cisco.

Fred Upton (R-Mich.), chairman of the House Energy & Commerce Committee that oversees communications, added his congratulations.

“We will have a steady hand at the tiller with the selection of Paul Ryan to lead the people’s House today,” Upton said. “I appreciate Paul’s commitment to advancing solutions in a thoughtful and deliberate way and know we will get to work quickly to address pressing issues that present both challenges and opportunities...."
