                                <p>Common Cause, joined by almost two dozen more groups, have called on Facebook to prevent political action committees (PACS) affiliated with suspended accounts--the target is former President Trump--to violate the site&apos;s community standards.<br><br>That violation of standards was the specific rationale Facebook gave for suspending Trump&apos;s Facebook and Instagram accounts.</p><p><a href="https://www.nexttv.com/news/donald-trump-sues-big-tech">Also Read: Trump Sues Big Tech</a><br><br>The <a href="https://www.commoncause.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Letter-to-Facebook-re-Campaign-Finance-Loophole-Final-7-26-21.pdf">groups wrote Facebook</a> CEO Mark Zuckerberg telling him that Facebook should not allow the Team Trump page, which is operated by Trump’s Save America PAC, " to continue running political ads on Facebook, despite the current 2-year ban on the former president’s Facebook and Instagram accounts.<br><br>Facebook has said that was because the ban only applied to affiliated posts if they were in Trump&apos;s "voice."<br><br>The groups argue that is too vague a term and Facebook needs to clarify its policies and better align them with campaign finance laws in the face of what they said is Trump&apos;s ability to practice ban evasion via the PAC they argue he controls.<br><br>To the degree they can divine the standard for voice, they said, it appears to only include posts of videos of Trump or links to his website.<br><br>They said that under campaign finance law, Trump&apos;s PAC is controlled by the former president, so allowing its political ads on Facebook is allowing Trump to use a loophole to evade the ban.</p><p><a href="https://www.nexttv.com/news/trump-pac-peddles-tech-suit-tee">Also Read: Trump PAC Peddles Tech Suit Tee</a><br><br>"If Facebook’s content moderation policies for public figures are to have any legitimacy, they must not be so easily circumvented. We urge Facebook to close this loophole and align its content moderation policies with campaign finance law to prevent politicians from using political committees under their control to evade enforcement actions," said Yosef Getachew, Common Cause media and democracy program director.</p><p>Among the groups signing on to the letter were Free Press, MoveOn, and the National Hispanic Media Coalition.</p>

                                <p>Comcast is among the companies that have re-thought their political contributions to some Republican legislators.</p><p><a href="https://www.nexttv.com/news/ustelecom-suspends-pac-bucks-to-republican-election-challengers"><strong>Also Read: USTelecom Suspends PAC Bucks to Candidates</strong></a></p><p>Comcast issued the following statement Monday afternoon (Jan. 11), a day that saw numerous companies and associations weighing in on their PAC funds after a number of Republicans voted to object to the electoral vote count for President-elect Joe Biden, even after the violent storming of the Capitol by Trump supporters arguably egged on by the President&apos;s speech earlier in the day Jan. 6.</p><p>“The peaceful transition of power is a foundation of America’s democracy," the company said. "This year, that transition will take place among some of the most challenging conditions in modern history and against the backdrop of the appalling violence we witnessed at the U.S. Capitol last week," it said.</p><p>There were reports that some of the insurrectionists meant to do legislators harn, and there could be more violence in the run-up to the Jan. 20 inauguration. </p><p><a href="https://www.nexttv.com/news/atandt-suspends-funding-for-republicans-who-opposed-biden-certification"><strong>Also Read: AT&T Suspends Funding for Republicans Who Opposed Biden Certification</strong></a></p><p>"At this crucial time, our focus needs to be on working together for the good of the entire nation," said Comcast.                                 <p>AT&T has joined a growing list of companies distancing themselves from Republicans who voted to challenge the electoral vote count of President-elect Joe Biden, some of which challenges occurred even after the storming of the White House by Trump supporters branding the election a fraud.</p><p><a href="https://www.nexttv.com/news/congress-certifies-joe-biden-as-next-president">Also Read: Congress Certifies Biden Win</a></p><p>It was actually the employees who made the decision about who should not be getting their PAC money.</p><p>“Employees on our Federal PAC Board convened a call today and decided to suspend contributions to members of Congress who voted to object to the certification of Electoral College votes last week," said an AT&T spokesperson.</p><p><a href="https://www.nexttv.com/news/president-trump-wont-concede-election-blames-media">Also Read: President Won&apos;t Concede Election, Blames Media</a></p><p>There were reports earlier in the day that JPMorgan Chase & Co., Citigroup, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Marriott were all "pausing" <a href="(https://www.wsj.com/articles/capitol-riot-prompts-some-big-banks-and-companies-to-pause-political-funding-11610315288">their contributions to those Republicans.</a></p><p>"We applaud AT&T for taking this step," said Sonja Spoo, director of reproductive rights campaigns at UltraViolet, "but AT&T needs to do more including pledging to never give to these members of Congress again, withholding further funds from the Republican party until seditious members are expelled from Congress or resign, and rescinding donations to the members who they have already given to who took part in the insurrection."</p>

                                <p>Lawrence Lessig's Rootstrikers group has launched a petition to get comedian Stephen Colbert to re-launch his Super Pac when he moves to CBS to replace Letterman next year.  </p><p>The Colbert Report on Comedy Central ends its run next month.</p><p>"Yes, it's a funny bit. But Colbert's PAC brought the issue of money in politics to a mainstream audience unlike anything before it. His fake ads and commentary on the state of our campaign finance system were invaluable," says the group. "They were so good, in fact, they won him a Peabody Award."</p><p>In an e-mail solicitation, Rootstrikers, which aims to strike at the financial roots of political corruption, which it sees as special interest funding of political campaigns, said that the fight is easier when a comedian makes it easier to talk about.</p><p>John Oliver, for example, like Colbert an alumnus of the John Stewart school of political skewering, is credited with helping drive some of the millions of comments that clogged the FCC's network neutrality docket with his <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/news/wheeler-oliver-net-neutrality-riff-was-creative-375139" data-original-url="https://www.multichannel.com/news/wheeler-oliver-net-neutrality-riff-was-creative-375139">skewering of the FCC and ISP</a>'s.</p><p>At press time the petition had 2,296 signatures.</p><p>Colbert <a href="http://www.broadcastingcable.com/news/washington/colbert-pac-releases-first-ad/59217">launched the PAC in summer 2011</a> as a way to comment on the Citizen's United decision's removal of restrictions on direct corporate and union treasury fund expenditure for electioneering ads -- advocating the election of a particular candidate.</p>
