Abbott Elementary’s Sheryl Lee Ralph was a surprise Emmy Award winner in the supporting actress in a comedy category, leading an otherwise predictable lineup of winners in the supporting performance categories across comedy, drama and limited series. 

Ralph, who plays teacher Barbara Howard in the freshman ABC comedy, accepted her first Emmy award during NBC's live telecast by singing lyrics from the Dianne Reeves song Endangered Species. She becomes the second Black woman in history to win in the category, 35 years after Jackée Harry won the award for her role in 227.

“To anyone who has ever had a dream and thought your dream wasn’t, wouldn’t, couldn’t come true, I am here to tell you that this is what believing looks like,” Ralph added. 

Abbott Elementary creator Quinta Brunson also won an Emmy for outstanding writing for a comedy series.

Other winners in the supporting actor and actress categories include Brett Goldstein, who repeated as supporting actor in a comedy series for his role as Roy Kent in Apple TV Plus’ Ted Lasso.

On the drama side, Succession’s Matthew Macfadyen won the best support actor award, while Ozark’s Julia Garner took home top honors for best supporting actress. 

HBO’s The White Lotus swept the supporting actor and actress categories in a limited or anthology series or movie, as Murray Bartlett and Jennifer Coolidge took home statuettes, respectively.■  

The final seven episodes of crime drama series Ozark drew more than 102 million hours of viewing in their first full week on Netflix, making it the most watched show by far last week on the SVOD provider's global platform. 

The audience actually represented a slight uptick over the first stanza of Ozark's final season, which debuted in January -- part one of Ozark Season 4 drew just over 96 million hours of viewing for the week of January 24-30. 

The series, which stars Jason Bateman and Laura Linney, was the only Netflix show to garner 50 million or more hours of viewing for the week of May 2-8.

Season 1 of the Colombian organ-harvesting-themed revenge thriller The Marked Heart gathered nearly 48.6 million viewing hours, finishing atop Netflix's non-English language TV series chart and No. 2 overall. 

Among Netflix films, the Poland-produced, English-language as-close-to-porn-as-Netflix-can-probably-get sequel 365 Days: This Day was the most watched Netflix movie of the week. 

The final seven episodes of original series Ozark drew 78.4 million hours of streaming in their first three days on Netflix's global platform. That was good enough to rank as Netflix's No. 1 English-language original series for the week of April 25 - May 1. 

However, that fell short of Spanish-language Colombian thriller series The Marked Heart, which was Netflix's most watched show of all last week with nearly 85.3 million viewing hours. (That's with an asterisk, which we'll explain a few paragraphs down.)

Ozark Season 4 Part II was also down from January's Part I debut, which drew 96.3 million viewing hours over a similar first-three-days-on-platform span.

Some critics, at least, have grown cool to the show.

"Yes, I watched the second half of the Netflix hit series’ final season, and no, it wasn’t good. And I say this as someone who used to like the show," wrote San Francisco Chronicle film critic Mick LaSalle. 

Notably, tawdry Polish film sequel, 365 Days: This Day generated nearly 78 million hours of streaming worldwide on Netflix from April 25 - May 1. Combined with 2020's first installment, 365 Days, which ranked as Netflix's No. 4 English-language film for the week with just over 10 million viewing hours, the two installments accounted for more viewing than any other Netflix title last week.  

365 Days follows an attractive Warsaw hotel executive who is kidnapped by a Sicilian mobster and given a year to fall in love with him ... with sexy results. 

Netflix will bid farewell to two long-running series and Apple TV Plus debuts a new thriller starring The Handmaid’s Tale’s Elisabeth Moss this week as the calendar changes to May.

Netflix on April 29 will launch the final seven episodes of its Emmy-winning original drama series Ozark. The second half of the show’s fourth season will feature series stars Jason Bateman, Laura Linney, Sofia Hubbitz and Skylar Gaertner.

Also on the 29th, the streaming service will stream the remaining 12 episodes of the seventh season of hit comedy series Grace and Frankie. The Emmy-nominated series stars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.

Moss stars in Apple TV Plus’ new sci-fi/drama series Shining Girls, which follows the trail of a time-travelling serial killer. The series, which also stars Wagner Moura, debuts April 29 on the streaming service.

The true story of the New Orleans Saints coaches monetarily rewarding their players for injuring opponents will go down as one of the darker chapters of the National Football League, a cringy moment for a pastime that often over the decades has unfortunately skirted -- or passed -- the line from great American full-contact sport into ugly violence. 

Adam Sandler and his Happy Madison Productions, which somehow correctly, predicted that Happy Gilmore, skirting some of the same lines, would be a successful comedy 26 years ago, thought a story tied to "Bountygate" might make for comedy gold on Netflix. 

It didn't. 

The Netflix original movie, Home Team, starring Kevin James as Saints Head Coach Sean Payton, returning home while serving a year-long, league-imposed suspension a decade ago, and coaching his son's youth football team to Bad News Bears-like redemption, generated just over 21 million viewing hours on Netflix from January 28-30. 

In Netflix's recently launched Global Top 10 ranker, it finished second for the week in the English-language films category to romcom The Royal Treatment. 

The top show in all of streaming for the week was a non-English-language TV show, Korean zombie apocalypse original series All of Us Are Dead, which drew 124.8 million viewing hours to finish No. 1 globally, but only No. 4 in the U.S. overall. 

Among English-language TV shows, Ozark: Season 4 once again finished on top, garnering 96.3 million viewing hours. 

And in the fourth category ranked by Netflix, non-English-language film, Turkish drama My Father's Violin finished No. 1 with nearly 12.4 million viewing hours. 

The video industry didn’t produce a record 559 original TV series in 2021 by going dry in January. And certainly, there’s plenty on tap to stream this upcoming week. The fourth and final season of Netflix’s Ozark is finally here to binge. And after a brief break, Showtime’s Billions is returning for its sixth season. The only caveat is that Damian Lewis is no longer with the series, which means that Season Six could be Billions’ last. HBO Max’s long awaited The Gilded Age also drops this week. There is plenty of nonfiction fare being offered up as well. In the run up to the Super Bowl, a docuseries about women in the NFL called Earnin’ It is coming to Peacock, while the short docu Three Songs for Benazir, which is up for Oscar consideration, comes to Netflix. Here are 10 programming events in store for Jan. 20-26:

The Envoys (Paramount Plus, Jan. 20)

Local language series are all the rage, so it’s no surprise that Paramount Plus is now streaming the Spanish-language Mexican and Argentinian thriller series The Envoys (Los Enviados) in the U.S. All eight episodes of the series, about two priests who go to Mexico to verify the alleged miraculous healings of another priest, will be available for bingeing. The cast includes some of the Latin-world’s biggest names, such as Luis Gerardo Méndez (Narcos: Mexico, Charlie’s Angels), Miguel Ángel Silvestre (Narcos, Sense8), Irene Azuela (Sense8) and Miguel Rodarte (Narcos: Mexico).  Juan José Campanella, writer-director of the Academy Award winning The Secret in Their Eyes, created the drama for ViacomCBS International Studios (VIS) after signing a first look deal with the company in 2020.

Ozark – Season 4 (Netflix, Jan. 21) 

The wait is finally over. Marty (Jason Bateman) and Wendy (Laura Linney) are back and most likely -- by season’s end -- will be killed by either the Navarro drug cartel or Ruth. The fourth and final season features explosions, car crashes and plenty of guns. Part 1 of Ozark Season 4 contains seven episodes. The premiere date for the final seven episodes has not yet been announced. Critics, who have warmed to this story about a Chicago financial planner who relocates his family to the Missouri Ozarks to launder money, evidenced by the 93% score for Season 4 on Rotten Tomatoes. "If it all sounds kind of ridiculous it's because it is. But it's also massively entertaining, largely because of the performances," writes Bill Goodykoontz of the Arizona Republic.

Munich: The Edge of War (Netflix, Jan. 21)

Adapted from Robert Harris’ novel Munich, the Netflix film explores the lead-up to Adolf Hitler signing the Munich Agreement, which British prime minister Neville Chamberlain tragically mis-interpreted as the German leader’s promise not to invade Europe. The film, which was released theatrically in December, has been criticized for its sympathetic portrayal of Chamberlain, played by Jeremy Irons. That said, critics aggregated the drama at 94%. "A mixture of well-researched historical fact and pure fiction, Munich: The Edge of War is a smart and entertaining thriller that suffers from just one thing: We all know how it ends," wrote Michael O'Sullivan in the Washington Post. 

As We See It (Amazon Prime, Jan 21)

Based on the award-winning Israeli series On the Spectrum, the eight-episode Amazon series is the latest from Friday Night Lights (the series) EP Jason Katims. Focused three autistic twenty-something roommates trying to live independently, As We See It's lead actors -- Albert Rutecki (who plays Harrison), Sue Ann Pien (Violet) and Rick Glassman (Jack) – are all on the autism spectrum themselves. It’s a personal project for Katims, who has a son on the spectrum. “A few years ago, before I started thinking about this show, (my son) was becoming a young adult – the age of these characters in this show,” Katims told the New York Post. “And I was thinking a lot about his story and his future. You open up the Autism Speaks website, and you see a picture of a beautiful little boy. Those kids grow up. So, for a very personal reason, I was thinking about this subject matter. Then I saw the Israeli show.”

Single Drunk Female (Hulu, Jan. 21)

After one too many drunken fiascos, twenty-something Samantha Fink (actress Sofia Black-D'Elia) is forced to sober up and avoid jail time, which means moving back home with her mother, Carol (played by Ally Sheedy, 37 years removed from The Breakfast Club).  A job at the local grocery store and run-ins with former high school classmates make Fink want to drink more than ever. Question is, will she? The show has thus far eluded the spotlight of critics. But created by Simone Finch (The Conners) and executive produced by Jenni Konner (Girls), it does come with some pedigree. 

Billions – Season 6 (Showtime, Jan 23)

It’s questionable how the sixth season of the global high-finance series will play out without hedge fund billionaire Bobby Axelrod (played by Damian Lewis) in the lead role. Herr Axelrod is off to Switzerland and there is a new king in town, Mike Prince, played by Corey Stoll. The collision of wealth, power and corruption make this drama hard to take your eyes off of, which could be why Season 5 of the show scored an 91% aggregated rating on Rotten Tomatoes. "Darkly comedic and full of delicious twists and turns, the series is a juicy melodrama that delights in poking fun at the lifestyles of the rich and famous," wrote Kelly Lawler for USA Today. 

Earnin’ It (Peacock, Jan. 23) 

This new Peacock limited series wants to make sure we know about women who have made a career in the NFL. Sarah Thomas, the first female to be an official in a Super Bowl; Jennifer King , the Washington Football Team’s assistant running backs coach; and Lori Locust, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers assistant defensive line coach are among the women that this docuseries, narrated by singer/songwriter Ciara, highlights. Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians, New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley, Washington Football Team running back Antonio Gibson, Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott and NFL icon Deion Sanders are also featured in the five-part series. New episodes will drop weekly in the lead up to Super Bowl LVI, with the final episode posting Feb. 27.

The Gilded Age (HBO Max, Jan. 24)

It’s been a long road for this HBO production about New York City’s caste system during the Industrial Revolution. Originally intended for NBC in 2012, and then again in 2018, the series moved to HBO in 2019, but was shut down three days before filming was set to begin in March 2020. Luckily for historical fiction buffs, the nine-episode series is finally here. Created by Julian Fellowes, The Gilded Age, about power and wealth, could very well be the American version of Fellowes’ Downton Abbey. Cynthia Nixon, Jeanne Tripplehorn and Taissa Farmiga bring the period drama star power. 

Three Songs for Benazir (Netflix, Jan. 24) 

The 22-minute short documentary follows Shaista, a young man who is a refugee living in modern-day Afghanistan. Newly married to Benazir and living in a camp for displaced persons in Kabul, Shaista struggles to balance his dreams of joining the Afghan National Army and the pressure he feels to start a family. The doc was recently shortlisted for Academy Award consideration in the nonfiction short category and won the jury award for best short at Full Frame Documentary Film Festival.

Aziz Ansari: Nightclub Comedian (Netflix, Jan. 25)

Nightclub Comedian marks Ansari’s fourth special for Netflix and the streaming service’s first standup comedy special of 2022.  It's based on what Netflix bills as “an intimate surprise gig filmed in New York City in December 2021.” The comedian’s first three Netflix specials, Aziz Ansari: Buried Alive (2013), Aziz Ansari: Live at Madison Square Garden (2015) and Aziz Ansari: Right Now (2019) were lauded by critics. ■

The return of two, long-running cable series highlights a busy list of show premieres this week.

Netflix on Jan. 21 will debut the fourth and final season of its Emmy-winning drama series, Ozark, starring Jason Bateman and Laura Linney. The final season will feature two parts consisting of seven episodes each, according to Netflix. 

Showtime on Jan. 23 will premiere the sixth season of Billions minus co-lead actor Damian Lewis, who departed the show after the fifth season. Paul Giamatti and Corey Stoll will serve as co-stars for the upcoming season.

Among new series launching this week is Hulu's How I Met Your Father -- a spinoff of CBS' long-running How I Met Your Mother series -- which debuts Jan. 18.

Netflix Thursday offered the official trailer for part one of the fourth and final season of its Emmy-winning drama series Ozark, which debuts January 21.

The series’ final season, which will be released in two parts consisting of seven episodes each, continues to follow the Byrde family’s journey from their normal, suburban Chicago life to their dangerous criminal enterprise in the Ozarks, according to Netflix.

Ozark stars Jason Bateman, Laura Linney, Julia Garner, Sofia Hublitz, Skylar Gaertner, Charlie Tahan and Jessica Frances Dukes. The series, produced by MRC Television, is executive produced by Chris Mundy, Bateman, Mark Williams, John Shiban, Patrick Markey and Bill Dubuque. ■ 

Season four of drama Ozark consists of two parts. The first part, with seven episodes, premieres Jan. 21. The second part will have seven episodes as well. Netflix did not share the release date for part two. 

Season four is the final season. 

Jason Bateman, Laura Linney, Julia Garner, Sofia Hublitz and Skylar Gaertner are in the cast. 

Chris Mundy returns as showrunner, writer and executive producer. Jason Bateman, Mark Williams, John Shiban, Patrick Markey and Bill Dubuque executive produce as well, and Laura Linney is co-executive producer.

Ozark follows the Byrde family’s journey from their humdrum, suburban Chicago life to their dangerous criminal enterprise in Missouri’s Ozarks. “The series explores capitalism, family dynamics and survival through the eyes of (anything but) ordinary Americans,” according to Netflix. 

Ozark was up for the best drama Golden Globe earlier this year, but did not win. 

Netflix shared a trailer for season four of hit drama Ozark, which premieres in 2022. 

Jason Bateman, Laura Linney and Julia Garner star. Season three came out in March 2020 and was the most watched streaming show that year, according to Nielsen.

The show, about a family that relocates to the Ozarks in Missouri when the patriarch gets caught up in a money-laundering predicament, premiered in summer 2017. 

The trailer shows a party going on at a mansion. Marty and Wendy Byrde, played by Bateman and Linney, are in the bathroom, distraught and cleaning the blood and grit off themselves. 

There will be 14 episodes in the fourth and final season.

Netflix could more than double its total subscriber additions in the second half of 2021 as its original content slate expands, while Q2 growth, fueled by children’s programming and international series, should be in line with guidance, according to Canaccord Genuity media analysts Maria Ripps and Michael Graham.

In a note to clients issued Wednesday (July 14), the analysts estimated that Netflix would report about 1.1 million customer additions in Q2, slightly above company guidance of about 1 million additions. But Ripps and Graham expect bigger gains in the second half of the year — about 14 million customer additions (more than twice the five million added in the first half of the year) — fueled by the return of several popular series and a slew of new originals.

Netflix is scheduled to report its Q2 results on July 20. 

Ripps and Graham expect Netflix to end 2021 with almost 223 million total paying subscribers, up 19.2 million from the prior year, but still behind the 36 million it added in 2020. In 2022, the analysts predict Netflix will have nearly 250 million global customers, up 26.6 million.

After a sluggish first half in 2021, Canaccord expects Netflix’s second half content lineup to have “significantly more firepower,” with the July return of series Atypical, Virgin River, Never Have I Ever, and one of its most popular shows of 2020, teen drama Outer Banks.    

Reality dating show Sexy Beasts debuts on July 21 and similarly themed reality hit Love Is Blind comes back a week later for a three-episode reunion. On the film side, the third installment of teen drama The Kissing Booth premieres on Aug. 11 followed by He’s All That (featuring the acting debut of Tik Tok star Addison Rae) on Aug. 27, and action comedy Red Notice, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Gal Godot and Ryan Reynolds on Nov. 12. Lin-Manuel Miranda musical Tick, Tick … Boom!, season two of The Witcher, and Don’t Look Up are also slated for fourth quarter release.

New episodes of past hits after a COVID-induced hiatus should goose next year’s subscriber rolls even further, according to the analysts. 

“The content pipeline for 1H22 and beyond is also robust as COVID-driven production delays pushed out new seasons of some of the biggest titles like Stranger Things, The Crown and Ozark into next year, and Netflix continues to invest in unique content both in the U.S. and around the world which is helping to strengthen its competitive positioning and differentiate its library from those of rivals,” Ripps and  Graham wrote. 

Netflix has been shaking up its content mix of late, which is reflected in Canaccord’s own top 10 rankings. Animated children’s fare like The Mitchells vs. The Machines, Dog Gone Trouble and Wish Dragon have dominated Canaccord’s TV Power Rankings, while at the same time strengthening Netflix’s position against rival Disney Plus, the analysts wrote.

Original content is still a core growth engine for Netflix, and despite a lighter than usual slate in the past few months, about 64% of the SVOD service’s top ten shows in Canaccord’s power rankings were originals, compared to 63% in Q1 and 59% in Q4. 

As production for its tentpole titles was on hold, Netflix boosted its commitment to children’s content, licensing The Mitchells vs. The Machines from Sony Pictures, which stayed in the top ten rankings for each day of the quarter after rights were purchased. Kids movies also made up six of the top ten films in Canaccord’s power rankings  during the quarter, including Netflix-produced Dog Gone Trouble and Wish Dragon joining licensed fare like Home, Madagascar 3 and The Secret Life of Pets 2. 

Ripps and Graham expect that trend to continue, adding that Netflix already has a handful of kids series in the pipeline — A Tale Dark & Grimm and Dogs in Space slated for fall 2021 and Super Giant Robot Brothers expected in 2022.

Investments in local language content also are showing results across the board, with the popularity of series like Mexican mystery Who Killed Sara? placing second during the quarter in Canaccord Genuity’s TV Power Rankings and French thriller Lupin, Norwegian fantasy drama Ragnarok and Spanish teen drama Elite spending significant time in the top ten.

Netflix began producing local language series back in 2015 with the Colombian Cartel-themed Narcos, and followed that somewhat surprising hit with shows like Money Heist (Spain), Dark (Germany) and others. Now such shows are regular hits with viewers.

“...This segment of Netflix’s library serves not just as a tool to drive subscriber acquisition and engagement in international markets, but also as a key differentiating factor compared to other streaming services,” Ripps and Graham wrote. 

The analysts noted that Netflix plans to step up its already impressive local language output on several fronts.

In South Korea, where it has about 3.5 million subscribers, Netflix has invested about $700 million in two product facilities and local language content, and plans to spend another $500 million on movies and TV series produced in the country. The SVOD pioneer has spent about $420 million in India on content over the past two years and said that it plans to spend more than that on 41 new shows and movies it will release in 2021. 

Other countries will see similar investment. Netflix is opening a new office in Italy in the second half and plans to double the number of Italian original series next year; in the Nordic region, where it has 4.5 million subscribers, Netflix has already produced more than 70 original series and plans to open an office there in the second half of 2021. 

Netflix already has spent about $175 million producing shows in Colombia over seven years and plans 30 new projects before the end of the year. In Spain, where it has produced more than 50 titles and opened its first European production hub in Madrid in 2019, plans are to double the number of sound stages from five to 10 in addition to building new post-production facilities, a film lab and high-tech editing suites. In Russia, Netflix has announced plans to produce its first Russian original series — Anna K — a retelling of Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, while in Mexico it plans a remake of hit comedy movie Nosotros Los Nobles.

The Writers Guild of America East (WGAE) and West (WGAW) have announced their 2021 Writers Guild Awards nominees and Netflix got the most nods, followed by HBO and CBS.

Broadcast net nominations were primarily for news, with only Fox scoring multiple primetime nods for writing on its animation.

The awards, for outstanding writing in TV, new media, news and radio/audio, will be handed out March 21 at a virtual ceremony.

Netflix's 10 nods included The Crown (written by Peter Morgan and Jonathan Wilson), Ozark (Laura Deeley, Bill Dubuque, Paul Kolsby, Miki Johnson, Chris Mundy, John Shiban, Ning Zhou, Martin Zimmerman), and The Queen's Gambit (Scott Frank and Allan Scott).

HBO's nine nominations were for shows including Raised By Wolves (written by Aaron Guzikowski), High Maintenance (Isaac Oliver), and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (Johnathan Appel, Ali Barthwell, Tim Carvell, Liz Hynes, Greg Iwinski, Mark Kramer, Daniel O'Brien, John Oliver, Owen Parsons, Charlie Redd, Joanna Rothkopf, Chrissy Shackelford, Ben Silva, and Seena Vali).

Streaming service HBO Max got four nods of its own, three for children's shows Mo Willems and the Storytime All Stars Present: Don't Let the Pigeon Do Storytime (Mo Willems), The Not Too Late Show with Elmo (Geri Cole, Scott Gray, Benjamin Lehmann, Wendy Marston, Andrew Moriarty, Ken Scarborough, and Moujan Zolfaghari), and The Power of We: A Sesame Street Special (Geri Cole). The other was for new series The Flight Attendant (Kara Lee Corthron, Michael Foley, Ryan Jennifer Jones, Ticona S. Joy, Meredith Lavender, Jess Meyer, Daniele Nathanson, Marcie Ulin, Ian Weinreich, and Steve Yockey).

CBS was the top broadcast nominee with six, plus one for OTT service CBS All Access and one for WCBS-TV New York, which is co-owned with the network.

ABC got five nomination, but none for primetime. Its nods were four for news and one for daytime drama.

Fox also had five, all in the animation category. Four were for The Simpsons (Dan Vebber, Cesar Mazariegos, Jessica Conrad, and Danielle Weisberg) and one for Bob's Burgers (Katie Crown). In fact, Fox has all but one animation nomination, the other going to Netflix's BoJack Horseman (Nick Adams).

NBC had five as well, spread over writing for late night, comedy/variety, daytime and quiz/audience participation.

Other outlets getting multiple nominations included five for Hulu, three for Amazon Studios, three for Disney Plus, and two for Apple TV Plus.

Facebook also got two for promotional writing. 

Netflix dominated the 2021 Golden Globe nominations with strong performances in both the television and film categories.

The nominations, which were announced by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association Wednesday morning, saw Netflix draw 22 nominations in the television category, easily outdistancing HBO seven nods. The streaming service garnered   multiple nominations for several of its shows, including The Crown, Ozark and Ratched -- all three of which were nominated for best drama series along with HBO's Lovecraft Country and Disney Plus' The Mandalorian. 

Overall, The Crown drew six nominations to lead all shows.

The streaming service also nearly swept the best actress in a TV drama category with Olivia Colman and Emma Corrin (The Crown), Laura Linney (Ozark) and Sarah Paulson (Ratched) all nominated along with Jodie Comer (Killing Eve).

Netflix also garnered numerous nominations in the motion picture category for such films as Mo Rainey's Black Bottom and The Trial of the Chicago 7. 

Best TV comedy show nods went to freshmen series The Flight Attendant (HBO Max), The Great (Hulu) and Ted Lasso (Apple TV Plus) as well as sophomore series Emily in Paris (Netflix) and veteran series Schitt's Creek (Pop TV). 

Schitt's Creek drew five nominations in its final year of eligibility, followed by Ozark and The Undoing, with four nominations each. 

NBC will televise the 78th Golden Globes Awards ceremony on Feb. 28.

Reelgood tracks the 20 top shows users are streaming for the first time

With viewers stuck at home and tryout new shows for the very first time, the Netflix original series Ozark leads the OTT universe in quarantine period series sampling, according to new data released by Reelgood. 

For the period of March 16 - April 26, the San Francisco streaming business research company counted millions of “tracks”—defined as measurement markers, created when a streaming video user watches a show for the first time.

With season three of Ozark, a drama starring Jason Bateman and Laura Linney, posting on Netflix March 27, Reelgood said the show controlled 8.59% of all tracks during the 40-day period, followed closely by eight-part Netflix documentary series Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness.

Season three of Netflix's Ozark jumped out to a fast start, attracting 16.4 million viewers in the first 10 days it was available, according to Nielsen’s SVOD Content ratings.

The series, starring Jason Bateman and Laura Linney, nearly doubled the viewership of season two, which is not surprising with viewers stuck at home in order to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

The new episodes of Ozark had a 10-day average minute audience of 8.7 million viewers, topping Ozark season two, which averaged 5 million viewers.

On its first day of release on March 27, Ozark attracted 975,000 viewers. That compares to first day average audiences of 314,000 for Ozark season two, 280,000 for Tiger King, 536,000 for Orange Is the New Black season seven, and 395,000 for Mindhunter season two.

By the time it reached its 10th day, Tiger King was a legitimate phenomenon, drawing an average minute audience of nearly 19 million people.

Season three of anxious drama Ozark is on Netflix March 27. The series follows financial planner Marty Byrde, played by Jason Bateman, and his family as they navigate life in the Ozarks with Byrde owing some favors to a dangerous drug cartel.

Besides Bateman, the cast includes Laura Linney, Julia Garner, Sofia Hublitz and Skylar Gaertner.

Season two began in August 2018. 

Ozark was nominated for a best drama Emmy last year. 

Bateman is an executive producer, and directed multiple episodes in seasons one and two. Chris Mundy is an executive producer, as are Bill Dubuque and Mark Williams, who created the series.

Ozark is produced by Bateman’s Aggregate Films in association with Media Rights Capital for Netflix.

HBO outlasted Amazon Prime Video and Netflix as the three services dominated 71st annual Primetime Emmy Awards during a live ceremony that featured several surprises among the night’s winners.

HBO garnered nine Emmy wins during the live telecast to top all services, according to the TV Academy. Amazon Prime Video finished second, drawing seven awards and topping Netflix’s four wins during Fox’s live telecast. 

Prime Video comedy Fleabag won six of the streaming service’s seven awards, including a surprise win in the best comedy series category. The sophomore series topped category favorites The Marvelous Mrs. Masiel, which won last year, and HBO’s Veep, which had won the previous three years.

Fleabag star Phoebe Waller-Bridge also won the Emmy for best actress in a comedy, ending Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ record six consecutive wins in years in which she was nominated for the award. Dreyfus was not eligible to win the award last year, which was won by Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.)

NBC and FX were the only other networks with multiple wins with two each.

Overall including Creative Arts Emmys, HBO tallied 34 Emmy wins, with Netflix finishing second with 27 and Amazon Prime Video finishing third with 15. National Geographic was fourth with eight wins, with NBC rounding out the top five with seven statuettes.

HBO Game Of Thrones made one last Emmy splash, winning a total of 12 Emmys -- including a second straight Emmy for best drama series -- to top all shows. The network’s limited series Chernobyl finished second with 10 Emmy wins, including Outstanding Limited Series. Amazon Prime’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel finished third with eight Emmy wins.

Peter Dinklage repeated as Emmy winner in the best supporting actor category in his last year of eligibility for his role as Tyrion Lannister on HBO’s Game Of Thrones. Dinklage bested actors Giancarlo Esposito, Jonathan Banks, Alfie Allen, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Michael Kelly, and Chris Sullivan for the statuette.

In a surprise, Julia Garner won the best supporting actress Emmy for her performance as Ruth Langmore in Netflix’s Ozark, besting four Game Of Thrones nominees as well as Killing Eve’s Fiona Shaw.

Streaming service Netflix dominated nominations for the 2019 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards, announced Wednesday morning.

Netflix led all streaming services, cable and broadcast networks with 15 SAG Awards nominations, according to the organization. Amazon’s Prime Video and HBO followed close behind.

Among the shows with multiple SAG nominations were Netflix’s Ozark and The Kominsky Method, Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, NBC’s This Is Us, HBO’s Barry and Prime’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

The 25th annual SAG Awards will air live on TNT and TBS on Jan. 27.

Netflix has renewed its Emmy-nominated drama series Ozark for a third season, the streaming service announced Wednesday.

The series, which follows a family as they navigate the murky waters of life within a dangerous drug cartel, will return for a 10-episode third season, according to Netflix. Ozark garnered five 2018 Emmy nominations, including a best actor nod for series start Justin Bateman.

Bateman also serves as executive producer along with Chris Mundy, Bill Dubuque and Mark Williams. Ozark is produced by Bateman’s Aggregate Films in association with Media Rights Capital for Netflix. 

Netflix Sunday released the official trailer for the second season of its Emmy-nominated series Ozark. 

The drama series, which returns Aug. 31 on the streaming service, continues to follow Marty Bryde (Jason Bateman) and his family as they navigate the murky waters of life within a dangerous drug cartel, said Netflix officials.
