Triller Props Up October Teófimo López-George Kambosos Jr. PPV Boxing Event

Fresh off its Sept. 11 Evander Holyfield-Vitor Belfort pay-per-view event, event distribution company Triller will now turn its attention to its Oct. 4 Teófimo López-George Kambosos Jr. boxing event.

The PPV fight, for López’s undisputed lightweight titles, will take place on a rare Monday night after being rescheduled several times from its original June 19 date. In June López was diagnosed with COVID, initially postponing the fight to Aug. 14 before eventually settling on the Oct. 4 date at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

The PPV event will retail at $49.99 and will feature several undercard fights as well as a number of musical performances which will be announced at a later date, according to the distribution company. In Demand will distribute the fight along with digital streaming service FITE.TV.

The López-Kambosos fight follows Triller’s Holyfield-Belfort event in which Belfort, a former UFC mixed martial arts champ, scored a technical knockout of the 58-year old Holyfield, who replaced COVID-19 stricken Oscar De La Hoya a week before the event. It's unclear how many PPV buys the fight generated.

The event also featured commentary from former President Donald Trump, who provided color commentary through the event's multiple secondary audio programming (SAP) offering.

Evander Holyfield Replaces Oscar De La Hoya on Triller 9/11 PPV Fight Card

Former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield will once again step into the pay-per-view boxing ring this Saturday night (Sept. 11) to fight former UFC mixed martial arts champion Vitor Belfort, with former President Donald Trump providing commentary for the PPV event.

Holyfield -- who last fought professionally in 2011 -- replaces former boxing champion Oscar De La Hoya, who pulled out of the fight last week due to a positive COVID-19 diagnosis. The fight card also features a boxing match between mixed martial arts legends Anderson Silva and Tito Ortiz.

Trump and his son Donald Trump Jr. are scheduled to provide fight commentary during the multi-fight PPV card, according to industry sources. Purchasers of the $49.99 event will be able to access the Trump commentary on the multiple secondary audio programming (SAP) service, according to sources.

Oscar De La Hoya to Return to PPV Ring in September Exhibition Fight

Add former boxing champion Oscar De La Hoya to the growing number of retired boxers stepping back into the ring this summer.

The former 11-time, multi-division world champion will fight a Sept. 11 exhibition match against former UFC fighter Vitor Belfort as part of a Triller-distributed fight card which will also feature musical performances, according to the social media company. De La Hoya hasn’t fought in the ring since losing to Manny Pacquiao in 2008.

The fight is part of a weekend music festival dubbed TrillerVerz that will feature a number of musical acts that will be announced at a later date. It’s unclear whether the weekend’s events, including the De La Hoya-Belfort fight, will be part offered as one singular event or separate PPV events.

De La Hoya is the latest retired boxer to announce his return to the PPV ring. This Saturday Julio Cesar Chavez will fight in an exhibition boxing match against Hector Camacho Jr., marking his first ring appearance in more than15 years. Earlier this month Floyd Mayweather returned to the ring after a four-year absence to fight YouTube star Logan Paul in an eight-round exhibition bout. Former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield is also expected to step back in the ring later this year in an exhibition bout.

Triller distributed last November’s Mike Tyson-Roy Jones Jr. exhibition fight, which drew more than 1.6 million PPV buys.

HBO To Air Mayweather-Pacquiao Special

HBO will gather several boxing legends to discuss the May 2 Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao fight as part of new special debuting later this month.

The 30-minute special, Mayweather/Pacquiao: The Legends Speak premieres April 25 and features HBO boxing analyst Max Kellerman interviewing a number of ex-boxing champions to size up the matchup between arguably boxing’s two biggest pay-per-view draws.

Kellerman will interview former Mayweather and Pacquiao opponents Oscar De La Hoya, Shane Mosely, Miguel Cotto and Ricky Hatton about how to prepare for both fighters, said the network. In addition, the show will feature a panel of ex-boxing champions including George Foreman, Lennox Lewis and Bernard Hopkins discussing the upcoming event.

Mario Lopez Moves to MundoFox

When it comes to television opportunities, actor and host Mario López could be a Golden Boy.

While that notion may be up for debate, it’s no lie that the veteran Latino star has signed on as the executive producer for MundoFox’s newest primetime entry, Los Golden Boys.

López is sharing executive producer duties with boxing legend Oscar de la Hoya; the docu-reality series features current world champion boxer Leo Santa Cruz, former world champion Abner Mares, and up-and-coming fighter Antonio Orozco. The series, which bowed March 8, airs Sundays at 10 p.m. on Fox Hispanic Media’s Spanish-language broadcast network.

A MundoFox original production, Los Golden Boys is a behind-the-scenes look into the world of championship boxing and the daily struggles that fighters must contend with both in and out of the ring.

“We are extremely excited to welcome Oscar De La Hoya and Mario López to the MundoFox family,” MundoFox president Ibra Morales said. “Los Golden Boys is a riveting look at the lives of these young athletes who are achieving the American Dream with their talent and determination.”

Lopez’s deal with MundoFox follows a March 4 upfront call in which Fuse Media president Bill Hilary announced that Hispanic millennial-targeted NUVOtv — rechristened in 2011 from Si TV — will be folded into the Fuse music network in third-quarter 2015. Si TV Media purchased the 73 million-subscriber music and entertainment channel from the Madison Square Garden Co. for $226 million in April.

As reported by Multichannel News, the new Fuse channel will continue to work with NUVOtv chief creative officer Jennifer López, who will develop an unscripted show for the reborn Fuse.

There was no mention of Mario López, who Nuvo TV signed to a development deal in 2013. Under the deal, NUVOtv green-lighted the second season of the interview series Mario Lopez One-on-One, as well as a new dance competition series with the working title Salsa in the City. He was to also develop three new series for the network, network officials told Multichannel News.

The reimagined Fuse will focus on millennials; Hispanics represent a significant percentage of this age group, thus the network’s insistence that the NUVOtv’s concept isn’t going away.

“We also did a lot of research on NUVO and found that young, Hispanic people do not want to be put in a corner and pigeon-holed, but rather want to be recognized as part of the new America, and that’s what they want to celebrate,” Hilary told Multichannel News.

While NUVOtv’s programming philosophy is expect to take hold at Fuse, the channel is expected to morph into a music-centric offering dubbed “FM.” The target audience will remain multicultural adults aged 18-34.

Fox Deportes Sets Hispanic Heritage Campaign

Fox Deportes will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a marketing campaign profiling Hispanic athletes representing a variety of sports, said the network officials.

Beginning this month and running through the end of the year, the network’s first ever campaign showcases athletes in a series of vignettes that will run across all Fox Deportes programming.

The campaign includes World Boxing Champion and Hall of Famer Oscar De La Hoya; U.S. Men’s National Team and LA Galaxy star Omar Gonzalez; Kentucky Derby winner on California Chrome, jockey Victor Espinoza; NFL rising stars Gavin Escobar of the Dallas Cowboys and Mychal Rivera of the Oakland Raiders (pictured); and UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis and number-one contender Gilbert Melendez, coaches of the new season of The Ultimate Fighter: A Champion Will Be Crowned.

“FOX Deportes is thrilled to launch this campaign,” said Carlos Sanchez, Executive Vice President and General Manager in a statement. “The project gives us the opportunity to honor Hispanic athletes who really try to make a difference, and collaborate with our partners to celebrate our community.”

Canelo Álvarez Signs With HBO Sports

HBO Sports has re-signed former light middleweight boxing champion Canelo Alvarez to fight on the pay TV service, the network announced Tuesday.

The popular Mexican fighter (pictured right) signed a “long term” deal with HBO as part of an agreement between his promoter Golden Boy Promotions and the pay TV service. Alvarez fought nine times on HBO beginning in 2010 before moving to rival Showtime for his past five fights. The 24-year old fighter’s Sept. 14, 2013 pay-per-view fight with Floyd Mayweather is the most lucrative PPV event in the category’s history, generating more than $150 million.

It’s unclear when Alvarez, whose record is 44-1-1, will fight on HBO. Observers, however, believe Alvarez will eventually fight middleweight champion Miguel Cotto in 2015 in a mega HBO Sports PPV event.

“Everyone at HBO is excited to welcome back Canelo Álvarez to the HBO family, and we can't wait to re-introduce him to our subscribers,” said Ken Hershman, president of HBO Sports in a statement. “At only 24-years-old, Canelo has already established himself as one of the boxing world’s brightest stars, and we look forward to a long and mutually beneficial relationship as we embark on this new chapter together.
