Bergan most recently was at OneTwoSee, a Philadelphia-based startup company in the realm of sports technology and data that was recently acquired by Comcast, Stingray said. Previously he was senior vice president of distribution at Music Choice. Stingray said Bergan will work closely with Brian Decker, the SVP of U.S. sales, and will be responsible for sales development and building relationships with sales agents and TV operators in this country. Stingray Digital is based in Montreal, Canada. Bergan will be based on the East Coast and joins Stingray on Aug. 15, the company said.

“We are thrilled to welcome Rick as part of Stingray’s growing management team,” Eric Boyko, co-founder, president and CEO of Stingray, said in a release. “He is a team player with extensive expertise in music distribution, marketing and business development. His ability to constantly innovate, his energetic leadership style, and his faultless reputation are strong foundations on which we can continue to grow and build our business in the U.S. market.”

Music Choice in June sued Stingray Digital in federal court in Texas, claiming the Canadian company had infringed on patents held by Music Choice in gaining pay-TV affiliate customers in the United States, particularly citing Stingray's service provision to AT&T U-verse. Stingray Digital denied the infringement claims and said it would contest the lawsuit. Music Choice is owned by a partnership among subsidiaries of Microsoft, Arris, Sony Corp. of America, EMI Music Publishing, Time Warner Inc. and these U.S. cable providers: Comcast Cable Communications, Cox Communications and Time Warner Cable (now owned by Charter Communications).

Post-game, the app will provide a recap of the matchup, including by-quarter scores and the "Xfinity Player of the Game.”

Comcast said a future update to the app, to launch in time for the tournament’s Final Four, will pull up full team rosters and detailed individual player stats, including shooting percentages by court location.

The technology powering the app is from OneTwoSee, the Philadelphia-based startup that Comcast acquired earlier this month.

Comcast has been using the vendor’s tech for apps that sync up with NFL, NBA, and Major League Baseball games, with plans on tap to do the same for soccer and National Hockey League games

About 35% of Comcast’s video base is on X1, a number that could push 50% this year, Comcast CEO and chairman Brian Roberts said at the recent Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference in San Francisco.

But to create the graphical renderings and illustrations that will accompany that data, Comcast is feeding that data a platform from OneTwoSee, a Philadelphia-based startup. The app itself is “native” to the X1 guide, meaning it comes in over Comcast’s managed IP network, not via a public Internet connection.

Baseball Extras will be offered pre-game, during the game and post-game. Before the game, viewers can pull up player and team stats and a stat-rich graphical preview. During the game, the system will show the aforementioned match-up scenarios, present fantasy information, and employ algorithms to determine a game’s general excitement-level using a rating of 1 to 10 (Thuuz Sports, an outfit that counts Dish Network among its partners, offers a platform for mobile devices and set-tops that relies on an excitement scale of 1 to 100). The Baseball Extras app will also offer a full post-game analysis.

Update: Comcast is providing its excitement-level rating in the "Extras" app for X1 based on an integration with Thuuz's algorithms, acccording to a Thuuz official, who notes that Thuuz is also a Comcast customer.

The commercial introduction of Baseball Extras followed some earlier work Comcast and OneTwoSee did on X1 around some of the NFL’s post-season games, including the Super Bowl.

A deeper look at Sports Extras and Comcast’s partnership with OneTwoSee will be featured in the July 6 issue of Multichannel News.

All of the cool kids don’t live and work in Silicon Valley.

A few of them, it turns out, work for a small Philadelphia startup called OneTwoSee that has developed a white-label, multiscreen application platform that can present a range of data and information that syncs up with live sports broadcasts. In addition to tabulating that information and turning it into visuals that can be displayed on smartphones, tablets and PCs, the system is also capable of overlaying or tying those features to IP-connected set-tops and smart TVs.

Although OneTwoSee isn’t big (it has 13 full-time employees now and expects to expand that to as many as 20 by the end of the year), it has already landed some big-name clients, including Fox Sports, NBC Sports, Canada’s TSN, YES Network, Comcast SportsNet and LG Electronics.

OneTwoSee is supporting live interactive components for Fox Sports for apps tied to its live coverage of Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League, the National Basketball Association and and college basketball.

The startup is also working with Comcast Cable, powering an interactive sports app coming to the MSO’s X1 environment. The two companies are being hush-hush about the specifics ahead of the launch, but it’s expected to debut on Comcast’s X1 platform sometime this fall.

OneTwoSee’s core competency is to take raw data, normalize it and then display it across multiple platforms. That data, obtained through partnerships with the media rights-holders, spans real-time game stats, predictive content and the ability to poll viewers and to tie in information culled from Twitter and other social-media outlets.

The idea is to create and present a “combined game-day experience” that adds depth to the broadcast, Chris Reynolds, OneTwoSee’s co-founder and CEO, said. “We can provide contextual data that provides a sort of digital sports color commentator.”

In addition to engaging viewers, OneTwoSee said its approach opens up fresh ad inventory and other forms of new revenue-generating opportunities. The LG/Bloomberg Sports “BSports” implementation for Major League Baseball on LG-made smart TVs, for example, is ad-supported, providing game preview information as well as in-game data, such as hitter-pitcher matchups that show where the pitcher should locate the next pitch based on the batter’s historic cold and hot zones.

OneTwoSee’s main competition comes from agencies that develop one-off apps for video partners, but it believes it has an advantage because its core approach allows for rapid customizations and the ability to roll out and “normalize” apps across browsers, smartphones, tablets and TVs.

The company, founded in October 2010, has raised about $3 million so far.
