HBO will premiere its re imagining of the classic Perry Mason drama series while Showtime and AMC bring back two of its most popular series during the week heading into the official start of summer.

HBO’s Father’s Day (June 21) premiere of Perry Mason will resurrect the character made famous by actor Raymond Burr in the series that ran on CBS in the late fifties and early sixties. In the reboot, Mason is played by Matthew Rhys (The Americans) who, as a young private investigator, works on a child kidnapping case.

Series returning this week include the June 21 premieres of Showtime’s The Chi and AMC’s NOS4A2, as well as the June 17 second season debut of Netflix comedy series Mr. Iglesias.

Season 14 of Killer Couples starts on Oxygen June 18. Terrifying as they are, the lovestruck pairs can be kind of fun to watch. “The idea of couples, driven by passion and pushed to the brink to do anything to be together,” Todd Moss, senior VP of producer Jupiter Entertainment and executive producer on the series, said. “That’s always an enduring and intriguing story.”

Things kick off with Kelsey Bereth, a young mother who was murdered by her fiancé and his former girlfriend in Colorado. The season also looks at a grandmother and her husband who go missing, and a man and his adult son who are murdered, the investigation exposing an illicit romance and family betrayal.

How do the producers unearth these people? “Thousands of hours of research,” quipped Eric Wetherington, executive producer and showrunner.

The producers either want a case people don’t know about, or a case everyone knows about with a fresh angle to it. Episodes are grouped into themes, such as “First Love,” “First Kill” and “Underage and Full of Rage.”

“We look for great red herrings that allow viewers to be an armchair detective,” Moss said.

Season two of NOS4A2 premieres on AMC and BBC America June 21. The season picks up eight years after the events of season one. Vic McQueen is intent on destroying Charlie Manx, and Manx has his eye on McQueen’s young son Wayne. Ashleigh Cummings plays McQueen and Zachary Quinto plays Manx. He’s a bad dude, devouring the souls of children, then dumping what’s left of them at Christmasland.

NOS4A2 is based on Joe Hill’s novel. Hill, son of Stephen King, executive produces alongside Jami O’Brien. O’Brien formerly worked on Fear the Walking Dead and Hell on Wheels. An AMC exec asked her if she’d read the novel. She hadn’t. “We got the rights to it,” the executive said. “Read it.”

O’Brien did, and found NOS4A2 to be a “real page-turner.”

“The way Joe Hill draws the McQueen family is so nuanced and complicated,” she added. “I haven’t seen a family like that on TV in a long time.”

O’Brien said she fell for Quinto in the Star Trek movies. She called him “a phenomenally talented actor.”

Season one ran on AMC. Season two is on AMC and BBC America, as happened with Killing Eve earlier this year. “It’s great to open up the show to a whole new audience,” O’Brien said.

The series has Charlie Manx at several different ages, and O’Brien said Quinto captures them all. “He worked really hard to create a physicality and a voice for each of the different ages,” O’Brien said. “He’s just delicious to watch.” 

AMC will bring back its horror-themed series NOS4A2 for a second season on June 21, network executives said Friday. 

The sophomore campaign of the series -- based on Joe Hill's best-selling novel of the same name -- picks up eight years after the events of season one in which a gifted girl with the ability to find lost things is pitted against an evil and immortal being who feeds off the souls of children, according to the network. 

NOS4A2 stars Ashleigh Cummings and Zachary Quinto, and is executive produced y Jami O'Brien and Joe Hill.

AMC will develop a limited series based on the infamous 1980s "Preppie Murder," part of a series of new projects from AMC, the network announced during its Television Critics Association press tour Thursday. 

The five-part The Preppy Murder: Death in Central Park -- which will be simulcast on both AMC and Sundance TV over three consecutive nights beginning Nov. 13 -- re-examines the 1986 killing of Jennifer Levin at the hands of Robert Chambers, said Sarah Barnett, president, entertainment networks for AMC Networks.

“In the mid to late 1980s, two epic crimes rocked New York and the broader country -- the Central Park Five case and the murder of Jennifer Levin,” said Barnett. “These events have a few things in common: they both took place in Central Park and the prosecutor who tried both cases was Linda Fairstein. “What’s more, together they shine a startling light on how race, gender and socioeconomics profoundly influenced the course of justice.”

Barnett also confirmed the second season renewal of horror series NOS4A2 and the season six renewal of zombie-themed series Fear the Walking Dead.

Other series premiere dates announced include season 10 of The Walking Dead (Oct. 10), Preacher (Aug. 4), Lodge 49 and The Terror: Infamy (Aug. 12), and Hip Hop: The Songs That Shook America (Oct. 13).

TV’s summer season kicks into high gear this week with a number of new series premieres including AMC’s horror series NOS4A2 and Epix’s Perpetual Grace as well as the return of such shows as TNT’s Animal Kingdom and AMC’s Fear The Walking Dead.

AMC will premiere its new horror-themed series NOS4A2 on June 2, the network said Saturday.

The 10-part series, based on Joe Hill's bestselling novel of the same name, follows a young woman with a supernatural gift of finding things who looks to track down a seductive immortal who feeds off the souls of children, then deposits what remains of them into an icy, twisted Christmas village of Manx's imagination where every day is Christmas Day and unhappiness is against the law, according to the network.
