TV networks are giving classic music fans a chance to bust out their platform shoes, parachute pants, leg warmers and bandanas.

AXS TV tonight (Aug. 11) will debut AXS TV Concerts Hosted by Mark Cuban, a new weekly concert series featuring live performances from such popular 60s, 70s and 80s bands as The Village People, The Monkees, Bret Michaels and KC and the Sunshine Band.

Tomorrow (Aug. 12), Netflix will premiere its drama The Get Down, its ode to the late 1970s hip hop, punk and disco scene in the Bronx. Hopefully the Baz Luhmann-produced series will dance to a more successful beat than HBO’s series Vinyl, an homage to 70s pop/rock music that missed a note with viewers earlier this year. HBO canceled it after initially renewing the series for a second season following the premiere.

Even MTV has returned to its classic music roots, having relauched the VH1 Classic network into MTV circa 1980-2000. The new MTV Classic channel debuted Aug. 1 by offering the same programming MTV aired during its first hour on air -- 35 years ago.

Among reruns from classic MTV scripted and reality shows like Beavis and Butthead, MTV Classic will also feature vintage MTV Unplugged performances featuring such performers as Bob Dylan, Alice in Chains, Erykah Badu, Oasis, Neil Young and Nirvana.

Viewers have already boogied this summer to ABC’s limited series Greatest Hits, which brought back artists like Boyz II Men, The Backstreet Boy, Wilson Phillips, New Edition, En Vogue, Nelly and Rick Springfield to perform their biggest hits from the 1980s-early 2000s. The series drew a respectable average of nearly 4 million viewers during its six-week run that began in June.

With the country still struggling through a turbulent summer, and an uncertain and potentially unstable few months ahead, a dose of nostalgic, comfort music on TV may serve as a welcome respite for viewers.

MTV will rebrand VH1 Classic into an MTV Classic channel that will feature vintage MTV programming from the 1990s, the network said Thursday.

VH1 Classic’s rock-themed music videos and live concert programming will be replaced by MTV Classic on Aug. 1 – 35 years to the day that MTV first debuted, said network officials. The newly branded network will launch by replaying MTV’s first hour of programming from 1981, said network officials.

 The “MTV Hour One” will also air on MTV’s Facebook page via Facebook Live.

Later that day MTV Classic will also air a Total Request Live retrospective,The TRL Decade, as well as a marathon of MTV Unplugged episodes featuring such artists as Bob Dylan, Alice In Chains, Erykah Badu, Oasis, Neil Young and Nirvana.

In primetime the network will air classic MTV animated including Daria, Beavis & Butt-head and Aeon Flux.

The network’s weekly schedule will feature MTV’s classic music series every Friday in primetime including MTV Unplugged, Storytellers and live music performances, while on weekends the network will offer full season marathons of such shows as The Real World, Laguna Beach and Road Rules.

VH1 Classic is the latest network in the MTV family to be rebranded. In February MTV’s Palladia channel was renamed MTV Live, while VH1 Soul was rebranded BET Soul last December. 

HBO will deliver the first fully authorized documentary about Kurt Cobain next year.

Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, is being driven by co-producers HBO Documentary Films and Universal Pictures International Entertainment Content Group, and will bow on the premium channel in the U.S. in 201. It will roll out internationally after its Stateside bow, later next year.

Oscar-nominated director Brett Morgen, who previously worked on Crossfire Hurricane, HBO's film about The Rolling Stones. is directing the film, eight years in the making. Visual artist Frances Bean Cobain, the daughter of the late Nirvana singer, guitarist and songwriter, and musician Courtney Love, is serving as executive-producer. Cobain committed suicide in 1997 at the age of 27.

Montage of Heck marks the first documentary to be made with the blessing of Cobain’s family. Morgen was afforded unprecedented access to Cobain's archives, including never-before-seen home movies, recordings, artwork, photography, journals, demos and songbooks. The film features dozens of Nirvana songs and performances, as well as previously unheard Cobain originals.

Entertainment legend Barbara Streisand will get her own SiriusXM Satellite Radio channel this Friday, appropriately named The Barbra Streisand Channel, which will exclusively feature the works of the Grammy, Oscar, Emmy and Tony award-winning artist.

The limited-run channel will launch on Sept. 12 at 5:00 pm ET and will run through Friday, Oct. 10, via satellite on Sirius channel 69 and XM channel 73. The Barbra Streisand Channel will also be available online on channel 69 and through the SiriusXM Internet Radio App.

Sirius XM is controlled by Liberty Media.

The channel will feature music spanning Streisand's legendary career, from her 1963 debut through her newest album, Partners, scheduled to be released on Sept. 16. The channel will be fully dedicated to Barbra Streisand's extensive body of work and will include selections from her live and studio recordings. The channel will also include Streisand's personal song selections from her catalog, spanning 50 years.

The Barbra Streisand Channel will also feature an exclusive "Town Hall" special with the entertainer. Streisand will sit down for a Q&A session with a select group of listeners in the SiriusXM studios in New York. Moderated by her longtime colleague, music industry executive Jay Landers, "SiriusXM's Town Hall with Barbra Streisand" will air on Sunday, Sept. 14 at 12:00 pm ET on The Barbra Streisand Channel.
