Nicki Minaj will return to MTV’s Video Music Awards as emcee and performer, the network announced.

Minaj hosted last year. Fans will also see a world premiere performance of her new single, “Last Time I Saw You.”

Nominated 25 time, Minaj has won six VMAs. 

The VMAs will appear live from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, on September 12 on MTV and other Paramount networks including BET, BET Her, CMT, Comedy Central, Logo MTV2, Nickelodeon, Paramount Network, Pop, TV Land and VH1.

Previously announced performers include  Anitta, Demi Lovato, Doja Cat, Karol G, Kelsea Ballerini, Lil Wayne, Måneskin, Olivia Rodrigo, Shakira, Stray Kids and Tomorrow X Together.

Shakira and Sean “Diddy” Combs will also be on stage, receiving the Video Vanguard Award and the Global Icon Award, respectively.

A 90-minute VMA pre-show will feature performances by NLE Choppa and Sabrina Carpenter.

HBO Max will develop a new documentary series focusing on the life of hip hop artist Nicki Minaj, the streaming service said Friday.

The six-part series will explore Minaj’s personal and professional journey as she navigates the highs, lows in her rise to fame, said company officials. 

The series is directed by Michael John Warren (Fade To Black). Minaj, Warren, Aaron Gilbert, Brenda Gilbert and Cassandra Butcher serve as executive producers for the docuseries. 

“Nicki Minaj is a multi-faceted artist, businesswoman, and innovator as well as force to be reckoned with. It’s a privilege to bring this project to HBO Max and provide our viewers with unprecedented access to her life,” said Sarah Aubrey, head of original content for HBO Max in a statement.

Global hip hop star/entertainer Nicki Minaj will perform during TNT’s June 26 NBA Awards special, the network said Thursday (May 25).

The New York-based special will feature, for the first time, all of the NBA’s top awards honoring the league’s best performers, TNT said. 

Actor/rapper Drake will host the special, which will include the presentations of the Kia NBA Most Valuable Player, Kia NBA Rookie of the Year, Kia NBA Sixth Man Award, Kia NBA Defensive Player of the Year, Kia NBA Most Improved Player and NBA Coach of the Year awards, network officials said. 

In addition, six new awards voted on by fans via social media will also be presented, according to the network. 

MTV’s Aug. 30 Video Music Awards hit a sour note, according to most industry observers, posting a double-digit ratings decline from its 2014 version.

The show, once among cable’s biggest audience draws of the summer, averaged only 5 million viewers in its live run on MTV, down from the 8.2 million viewers the extravaganza generated last year.

That’s a major drop even in an environment where most cable shows and networks are losing audiences.

But the Miley Cyrus-hosted show struck a positive chord with the network’s target millennial audience on social media, where those viewers talk about the content they most want to see.

Performances, speeches and word wars by the likes of Nicki Minaj, Taylor Swift, The Weeknd and Justin Bieber – not to mention Kanye West’s 2020 presidential bid proclamation – helped drive a record 21.3 million tweets around the show, according to Nielsen’s Twitter TV ratings.

Clips from the VMAs drew more than 100 million loops on millennial-dominated online video-sharing service Vine and generated 64 million interactions on Instagram, where young people gravitate to discuss and view things that most interest them.

Unfortunately for MTV, the current content advertising distribution model – including accurate multiplatform audience measurements – have not caught up to the continued migration of viewers accessing and watching content on non-traditional platforms; otherwise, we might be viewing the performance of the Video Music Awards in a different light.

Some observers believe the MTV VMAs are no longer relevant given the show's declining ratings. But it just might be that traditional TV is no longer relevant to the VMAs or its audience.

Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards was a big hit in social media, but not so much on traditional TV.

The Miley Cyrus-hosted live event generated 5 million viewers for MTV, down from the 8.2 million viewers the show generated in 2014, according to Nielsen.

The show, which featured performances from Nicki Minaj, Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, Justin Beiber and Demi Lovato, was also down in key demos, including 18-49 (3.2 million in 2015 vs. 5.2 million in 2014) and 18-34 (2.2 million vs. 3.7 million), according to Nielsen.

The 10-network simulcast of the live event drew a combined 9.8 million viewers, compared to 10.3 million viewers across four networks in 2014, according to Nielsen.

But those who watched the show were very chatty on social media. The show, which also included Kanye West’s announcement that he will run for president in 2020, drew more than 21.3 million Tweets reached 11.8 million unique Twitter users, the most non-sports program since Nielsen began tracking Twitter TV activity in October 2011.

BET will honor entertainer Janet Jackson with its “Ultimate Icon: Music Dance Visual Award” during Sunday’s BET Awards ceremony, the network announced Tuesday.

Jackson, who will launch her first studio album in seven years later this year as well as embark on a world tour this fall, will receive her honors during BET's live BET Awards telecast. Performers Ciara, Jason Derulo and Tinashe will perform a special dance tribute to the iconic entertainer, which is set to include her just released single, No Sleeep. 

“This is Janet Jackson, people!  We are excited beyond belief to present her with our inaugural 'Ultimate Icon: Music Dance Visual' award and we are thrilled that she chose the BET Awards as the first step on her new road,” said BET president of programming Stephen G. Hill in a statement.

The BET Awards, hosted by Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross, will also include performances by Chris Brown, Kendrick Lamar, Nicki Minaj and Meek Mill, while Michael Ealy, Sanaa Lathan, Laverne Cox, Michael B. Jordan and Zendaya, will serve as presenters for the show

Singer Chris Brown and Hip Hop artist Nicki Minaj drew the lion’s share of BET Awards nominations, BET executives said Monday.

Brown and Minaj garnered six nominations each, followed closely by Beyonce and Lil Wayne with four nominations each, according to BET. The BET Awards recognizes artists, entertainers and athletes across 20 categories.

“This year’s nominees showcase a diverse group of talent that includes longstanding entertainers, breakout performers, and outstanding athletes,” said Stephen Hill, BET’s President of Programming. “We congratulate all of the talent on their remarkable contributions to the world of entertainment and look forward to them joining us in celebrating 15 years of the BET Awards.”
