Netflix's limited series Griselda is enjoying a nice run on the streaming service as the Sofia Vergara-starrer is drawing viewers both domestically and abroad.

The series currently ranks as the third most watched show globally on Netflix, according to the streaming service's weekly audience performance report, after ranking first on Netflix during the week of its January 25 debut.

Griselda follows the real-life exploits of Colombian businesswoman and drug "queenpin" Griselda Blanco, portrayed by former Modern Family star Vergara. The series is executive produced by Narcos creators Carlo Bernard and Doug Miro. 

Martin Rodriguez, who plays Blanco’s right hand man Jorge "Rivi" Ayala in the series, said he was excited by the positive reception the show has received thus far.

“It’s a nice moment for the show,” he said. “[Griselda] was made by people who know how to tell a story very well.”

Canaccord Genuity media and technology analyst Michael Graham expects Netflix to beat its third quarter subscriber growth expectations, adding that growth should continue into the fourth quarter despite plans for a November price increase.

Netflix said earlier this month it would increase the monthly price of its premium tier to $13.99 from $11.99 and for its standard plan to $10.99 from $9.99 beginning in November. Pricing for its $7.99 basic plan will remain the same.

In the past, price increases have spurred a flurry of hand wringing from analysts who predicted it would result in slower subscriber growth.  And in Q2 2016, after it had decided to “un-grandfather” earlier subscribers who had been paying between $7.99 and $8.99 monthly for standard service to the current $9.99 rate – subscriber growth was impacted. Netflix added 1.7 million subscribers in Q2 2016, short of the 2.5 million it expected.

But Wall Street and investors applauded the latest increase – Netflix stock rose about 5% on the day it said it would implement the new rate card. And analysts are encouraged that a strong content pipeline will offset any churn.

In a research report, Graham noted that a slate of fairly strong original releases in the quarter like Narcos and high profile returns in the latter part of Q2, like Orange is the New Black, should carry additions into Q3.

Graham estimates that Netflix will add 850,000 domestic subscribers in the quarter, 50,000 more than analysts’ consensus of 796,000 additions and 100,000 above the company’s own expectations of 749,000 additions. He believes that with the second season of 2016 surprise hit Stranger Things slated for the fourth quarter, should help push that growth ahead.

“We still believe there are enough draws this quarter to drive a domestic sub beat,” Graham wrote.

In a promotional buildup to next week's second season premiere of drama series Narcos, Netflix is streaming the first 11 minutes of the show's sophomore season premiere episode on Facebook Live, the streaming service said Thursday.

The Facebook Live video of the series, which follows the true story of drug kingpin Pablo Escobar, opens with DEA agents acting as if they’ve stolen the first episode from Escobar and placing it on the Facebook page as a live video, said the streaming service..

The second season of Narcos debuts Sept. 2 on the streaming service.

Netflix will bring back its drug-themed drama series Narcos for a sophomore campaign in September, the OTT service announced Monday.

The series, which chronicles the gripping real-life stories of the infamous drug kingpins of the late 1980s and the law enforcement agencies set to track them down, will return on Sept. 2, said network officials.

José Padilha (Elite Squad,RoboCop) and Eric Newman (Children of Men) serve as executive producers of Narcos, which is produced by Gaumont International Television for Netflix.

Univision has struck a deal to air Narcos, the popular Netflix original series about drug lord Pablo Escobar, on Univision Network leading up to the series's second-season launch on the streaming service later this year.  

Univision-owned UniMás will air the first season of another Netflix original series, the the Spanish-language comedic drama Club de Cuervos, about a family-owned soccer team, ahead of its upcoming second season on Netflix.

Financial terms and air dates were not released. Separately, Netflix and the Univision Story House development and production unit said they will co-produce a drama series, El Chapo, about that other famed narcotics criminal. The drama will be available to Netflix members in the U.S. after it aits on UniMás in 2017. In the rest of the world, episodes of El Chapo will premiere exclusively on Netflix.

Univision and Netflix said the arrangement would give millions of U.S. Hispanic viewers who don't subscribe to Netflix the chance to sample Narcos and Club de Cuervos and to promote the shows' returns to Netflix.

Club de Cuervos, which debuted in all Netflix territories last August, is an outrageous original Spanish-language series from Mexican filmmaker Gaz Alazraki (Nosotros los Nobles). Balanced equally among comedy and drama, Club de Cuervos brings viewers into the middle of a no-holds-barred battle between members of a wealthy family to determine who will gain control of the beloved professional soccer team, The Cuervos of Nuevo Toledo. The series stars Luis Gerardo Mendez and Mariana Treviño, and features Stephanie Cayo, Daniel Giménez Cacho, Ianis Guerrero and Antonio de la Vega.

The Netflix drama Narcos has picked up a second-season renewal less than a week after its premiere.

Over-the-top service Netflix shared the news not with a press release but with a short video clip posted to Twitter. The tweet said, “Coming soon. #Narcos,” while the attached video showed an x-rayed briefcase with “Season 2” in it.

Netflix has confirmed that Adam Fierro will be the season two showrunner and executive producer, with Jose Padilha and Eric Newman on as exec producers.

Netflix delves into the Colombian drug wars of the 1980s in its new scripted series Narcos.

The 10-episode series stars Boyd Holbrook as DEA agent Steve Murphy, assigned by the U.S. government to help stop the flow of cocaine into the U.S. from Colombia, a trade spearheaded by drug kingpin Pablo Escobar (Wagner Moura).

The series follows Escobar’s rise from smalltime smuggler to multi-millionaire drug lord, producing and smuggling cocaine into Miami. The chronicling of events — as narrated by Murphy, and seen mostly through his eyes — paints a chilling portrait of a low-key but methodical and murderous Escobar, who controlled politicians and police as part of his infamous drug operation.

Escobar’s reach and influence is made apparent early in an encounter with police not already on his payroll after he is stopped for smuggling electronics. Escobar chillingly discusses personal details about each officer’s family members, forcing the cops to capitulate.

Narcos creators Chris Brancato, Eric Newman and Carlo Bernard paint a grim yet entertaining view of the dark and bloody 1980s drug trade, weaving its fictional retelling of Escobar’s story with period news footage. The contrast effectively helps put into perspective Escobar’s dominance of the drug trade as well as the somewhat ineffective war against drugs both abroad and in the U.S., including an infamous speech from then President Reagan and first lady Nancy Reagan, urging Americans to “Just say no.”

While Narcos doesn’t play as a documentary, it nevertheless provides a very detailed and often grizzly account of a time and a subject matter that still resonates with — and some may say still haunts — America today. Viewers will be fascinated with and entertained by the historical narrative Narcos provides throughout its 10-episode run.
