Streaming networks Hulu and Disney Plus, along with cable networks OWN and CNN, were the big winners of the 30th annual NAMIC Vision Awards, the diversity organization announced Tuesday morning.  

Hulu and its Onyx Collective brand won three awards, including best comedy for its freshman series UnPrisoned, to lead all programmers, while Disney Plus and OWN won two awards each. CNN Originals took home the best documentary award for See It Loud: The History of Black Television — a collaboration with LeBron James’s The SpringHill Co. — and CNN Worldwide won the News/Informational Award for “Homebirth Journey: Saving Black Moms” from The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper. 

NBC’s freshman series Found won for best drama series, topping ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy and The Rookie, Apple TV Plus’s Swagger and Paramount Plus’s Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Disney Plus's The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder was the top choice in the Animation category, while OWN's OWN Spotlight: Oprah & Kerry Washington triumphed in the Variety/Talk show category. 

The NAMIC Vision Awards celebrate original, multiplatform television programming that reflects the ethnic and cultural diversity of the viewing audience. “This year was monumental as we celebrate 30 years of the NAMIC Vision Awards,” NAMIC president and CEO Shaunise Washington said in a statement. “NAMIC is at the forefront in driving towards ethnic diversity in the industry, and because of this we are proud to recognize the accomplishments of companies who create programming in alignment with our mission and vision.”

Hulu and ABC were among several streaming services and networks nominated for multiple 2024 NAMIC Vision Awards, the diversity organization announced Monday (April 8).

Hulu, led by multiple nominations for its comedy series The Other Black Girl, and ABC, with nods for comedy series Abbott Elementary and drama series Grey’s Anatomy, drew the most nominations for Vision Awards, which honor excellence in diverse programming. Other distributors garnering multiple nominations include ESPN, Disney Plus, Prime Video, Starz, CNN, PBS, Paramount Plus, HGTV, Peacock and OWN.  

Along with ABC’s Abbott Elementary and The Wonder Years, shows up for best comedy series include Bob Hearts Abishola on CBS, Prime Video’s Harlem, and Hulu/Onyx Collective’s UnPrisoned. In the best drama series category, Paramount Plus’s Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will battle ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy and The Rookie; NBC’s Found; and Apple TV Plus’s Swagger for top honors.

ESPN nearly swept the sports category by securing four of the category's five nominations. Also, Max’s Sesame Street will look to repeat in the children’s programming category.

NAMIC will announce the Vision Awards winners in May.

AMC’s drama series Dark Winds won multiple National Association of Multi-Ethnicity in Communications (NAMIC) Vision Awards to lead all shows, the diversity organization announced Tuesday morning.  

The freshman series won two NAMIC Vision Awards -- which celebrate original, multiplatform television programming that reflects the ethnic and cultural diversity of the viewing audience -- including best drama series, beating out strong competition from Fox’s 9-1-1, ABC's Grey’s Anatomy and Women of the Movement, and Paramount Plus’s The Good Fight.

Dark Winds star Zahn McClarnon also won a Vision Award for best performance in a drama series, besting Cliff “Method Man” Smith (Starz’s Power Book II: Ghost); Courtney B. Vance (AMC’s 61st Street), Patina Miller (Starz’s Power Book III: Raising Kana) and Viola Davis (Showtime’s The First Lady).

CBS’ veteran series The Neighborhood took home the award for best comedy, topping ABC’s Abbott Elementary, black-ish and The Wonder Years, as well as Disney Plus’s Ms. Marvel. 

Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani won the best performance in a comedy award for her starring role in the Disney Plus series, beating out Frankie Quiñones (Hulu’s This Fool) Omari Hardwick (Paramount Plus’ Fantasy Football) Raven-Symoné (Disney Channel’s Raven’s Home) and Tichina Arnold (CBS’s The Neighborhood) for the honor.

HBO Max’s Pause with Sam Jay was the only repeat winner, taking honors in the Variety/Talk Show category for the second straight year.

HBO/HBO Max once again earned top honors for NAMIC Vision Awards, leading all distributors in total awards wins.

HBO/HBO Max led the industry for the sixth straight year by winning five NAMIC Vision Awards, which celebrates original, multiplatform television programming that reflects the ethnic and cultural diversity of the viewing audience. ESPN was the only other distributor earning multiple award wins with two. 

HBO’s Insecure was a repeat winner in the best comedy category, while Showtime's The Chi topped all competitors for the best drama award. Lifetime’s biopic on the life of gospel singer Mahalia Jackson – Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia – was the top choice in the Original Movie or Special category. 

“As our industry’s consumer base becomes increasingly diverse, culturally relevant content is central to our industry’s sustainability,” said NAMIC president and CEO A. Shuanise Washington in a statement. “The NAMIC Vision Awards importantly shines a light on programming that sets bold, new standards for inclusion by  reflecting the myriad culture, stories, and contributions of people from diverse backgrounds and walks  of life.”

HBO led a wide field of networks and streaming services nominated for 2022 NAMIC Vision Awards that recognize excellence in diverse and inclusive programming, the diversity organization announced Tuesday. 

HBO drew 18 Vision Awards nominations, led by its comedy series Insecure, to top all distributors, according to the diversity organization. ESPN finished second with 10 nods. Other networks garnering multiple nominations include Starz, Paramount Plus, Showtime, Lifetime, TBS, CBS, Hulu, Comcast, CNN, Vice and Disney Plus. 

HBO’s In Treatment and It’s A Sin will vie for Vision Awards best drama honors against Starz’ Power Book II: Ghost, Showtime’s The Chi and Vertical Entertainment’s Wild Indian. Nominees for best comedy include HBO’s Insecure, CBS’ Bob Hearts Abishola and United States of AI, TBS’ The Last O.G. and Hulu’s Love, Victor.

HBO, led by its comedy series Insecure, outperformed all programmers in wins at the 27th annual NAMIC Vision Awards, the diversity advocacy group’s annual recognition of on-screen excellence.

HBO won four NAMIC Vision Awards, which honors programming that reflects the lives, spirit and contributions of people of color and mirrors the diverse composition of the viewing audience. The premium service was led by Insecure, which won two awards, including best comedy series and best performance in a comedy series for series star Issa Rae. 

HBO’s horror-themed series Lovecraft Country also took home best drama honors, while the LeBron James-produced series The Shop: Uninterrupted was the top choice in the sports category. 

Lifetime picked up two awards for its original movie The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel and CNN also won multiple Vision Awards. 

NAMIC president and CEO A. Shuanise Washington recently spoke of the importance of recognizing quality, diverse and inclusive content during the NAMIC Vision Awards nominations process. “Now more than ever, this content is essential to fostering greater understanding and acceptance,”
she said.

More than 30 networks, streaming services and digital companies, led by HBO, garnered 2021 NAMIC Vision Awards nominations as part of the diversity organization’s annual recognition of excellence in inclusive programming. 

WarnerMedia’s HBO led all programmers with 17 nominations across numerous categories (and its streaming companion, HBO Max, had two on its own). HBO dominated the “best performance in a comedy” category with three nominations for Insecure (Jay Ellis, Issa Rae and Yvonne Orji) and one for I May Destroy You star Michaela Coel. Tracy Morgan of TBS’s The Last O.G. rounded out the category.

The Last O.G., Insecure and I May Destroy You will also vie for best comedy series along with HBO’s Betty and Pop TV’s One Day at a Time. Nominees for top drama are CBS’s All Rise, AMC Plus’s Gangs of London, HBO’s Lovecraft Country, CBS’s S.W.A.T. and Showtime’s The Chi.

HBO drew the most nods — 17 in all — when diversity organization NAMIC announced its 2020 NAMIC Vision Awards, which recognize original programming that reflects the lives, spirit and contributions of people of color and represents the ethnic and cultural diversity of the viewing audience.

NBC finished second with 10 nominations, followed by BET with 8, the organization said on April 2. NBC’s comedy Sunnyside was the most nominated show, with four nods. Broadcasters fared well, garnering at least one Vision Awards nomination in the major comedy and drama categories, including a sweep of the Best Performance for a Drama category. The Vision Awards winner will be announced in late April. Here are this year’s nominees.

HBO topped all cable and streaming services in garnering the most 2020 NAMIC Vision Awards nominations, the diversity organization announced Thursday.

The premium network garnered 17 nominations for NAMIC Vision Awards -- which honors programming that reflects the lives, spirit and contributions of people of color that mirrors the diverse composition of the viewing audience. -- to lead all nominees.

NBC finished second with 10 nominations, followed by BET with eight nods.

NBC’s comedy Sunnyside was the most nominated show with four, according to NAMIC. The broadcast networks fared well in generating NAMIC Vision Awards nominations, garnering at least one nomination in the major comedy and drama series categories and sweeping the Best Performance for a Drama category, according to NAMIC.

HBO garnered more 2017 NAMIC Vision Awards nominations than any other television network, The National Association for Multi-ethnicity in Communications (NAMIC) announced Wednesday night.

HBO drew 12 NAMIC Vision Awards nominations, which honor original and digital programming content that depicts the lives, spirit and contributions of people of color, said the diversity organization. ESPN and BET Networks drew eight Vision Awards nominations, while History Channel, CNN, ABC, ABS-CBN International, Discovery Latin America, Disney Junior, Food Network, National Geographic, Nickelodeon, Starz, TV One, VH1 and Viceland all garnered multiple nominations, according to NAMIC.

Nominations for the 2017 NAMIC Vision Awards were announced as part of the Hollywood Creative Forum 8.0 VIP Reception hosted by The Walter Kaitz Foundation.

Cable networks HBO, BET and OWN:Oprah Winfrey Network drew the most  2016 NAMIC Vision Awards nominations, the National Association for Multi-Ethnicity in Communications said Wednesday.

HBO notched nine nominations to lead all cable networks, while BET and OWN drew eight nominations for 22nd annual Vision Awards, which honor original and digital programming content depicting the lives, spirit and contributions of people of color, according to the diversity organization

Overall, 29 networks/distributors generated 83 nominations for NAMIC Vision Awards presented in 18 categories, said the organization. 

HBO’s original movie Bessie and Lifetime's Devious Maids each drew three nominations to top all shows, according to NAMIC. 

NAMIC will showcase the winning programs via an online event format, with the 2016 NAMIC Vision Awards Winners Gallery to be unveiled late April. The online awards gallery will feature :60 second clips of the winning entries in each of the 18 categories.

"At a time when diversity is at the forefront of our consciousness such as the case with the Oscars, NAMIC remains committed to recognizing achievements in ethnically and culturally relevant programming," said Eglon E. Simons, president and CEO, NAMIC in a statement. "We applaud this year's nominees and encourage them to continue advancing diversity on screen and behind-the-scenes."

Cable networks took home the lion’s share of NAMIC Vision Awards, the National Association for Multi-Ethnicity In Communications announced Wednesday.

ESPN, Lifetime, OWN and Showtime each won two awards to lead all television networks, according to NAMIC. The Vision Awards, which honor achievements in original programming diversity across multiple platforms, were awarded in 16 programming categories.

Among the winners were Showtime’s Masters of Sex as best drama, with Michael Kenneth Williams winning the best performance in a drama series award for his role in HBO’s Boardwalk Empire.

Lifetime’s Devious Maids was the winner in the best comedy category with actors Raúl Castillo (HBO’s Raúl Castillo: Looking) and Don Cheadle (Showtime’s House Of Lies) tying for best comedy performance.

Also tying in the "Original Movie or Special" category were CNN’s Documented and Lifetime’s The Trip to Bountiful.

ESPN scored an industry-high 11 2015 NAMIC Vision Award nominations as the diversity organization looks to honor the best multicultural-targeted content on television and the Web.

Kids’ network Nickelodeon drew 10 nominations for the 21st annual awards, which recognizes original content created for television and digital media platforms that depict and best reflect the lives, spirit and contributions of people of color. HBO was third with nine.

As the landscape of the viewing audience becomes more ethnically and culturally diverse through shifting demographics and the expansion of content distribution, the creation and green lighting of diverse original content is an imperative,” National Association for Multi-Ethnicity in Communications CEO Eglon Simons said. “NAMIC National, in partnership with NAMIC-Southern California, is pleased to continue our tradition of recognizing networks, talent and content creators for their achievements in programming diversity, and we extend sincere thanks to all of those within the industry that continue to support this awards initiative.”

Winners of the Vision Awards will be announced in May through a special Vision Awards microsite at NAMIC.com.
