Actress Jennifer Coolidge will be getting the “Comedic Genius” award at the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards, which will air live on May 7, the network said.

Coolidge, who starred in The White Lotus, becomes the sixth recipient of the Comedic Genius award, following Jack Black, Sacha Baron Cohen, Melissa McCarthy, Kevin Hart and Will Ferrell.

Coolidge has been a Hollywood mainstay ever since playing Stifler's mom in the 1999 classic American Pie. She has also had memorable roles in The Watcher, Shotgun Wedding, Legally Blonde and Best in Show.

MTV will host the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards Sunday, May 7 at the Barker Hangar in Los Angeles. The evening will salute the biggest and best in movies and television. 

The event will air on MTV in more than 170 countries. No host has been named, and  honorees, performers and presenters have not been announced yet. 

Last year, Spider-Man: No Way Home won best movie, and HBO’s Euphoria won best show. Tom Holland of Spider-Man got best performance in a movie while Zendaya of Euphoria got best performance in a show.

MTV said it will hold its 2022 MTV Movie & TV Awards live and in person on June 5, followed again by the second annual Movie & TV Awards: Unscripted on June 6.

The two events will be televised from Barker Hangar in Los Angeles and appear on MTV channels in 180 countries.

Hosts, performers and presenters will be announced at a later date, the channel said.

At a time when award show viewership is dropping, MTV's bet doubling down on its Movie & TV Awards resulted in higher linear viewership and record social engagements.

This year, in addition to Sunday’s MTV Movie & TV Awards, the network followed it up with MTV Movie & TV Awards: Unscripted, creating a two-day event that was televised across 12 of ViacomCBS's cable networks.

Leslie Jones hosted the Movie & TV Awards. Nikki Glaser hosted the Unscripted program.

On MTV alone, the Movie & TV Awards Sunday was up 42% among 18- to 34-year-olds, compared to a year ago, when MTV aired a special Movie & TV Awards: Greatest of All Time.

Across all networks the Movie & TV Awards collected 1.3 million viewers and the Unscripted edition garnered 377,000 viewers, for a total of 1.7 million viewers.

MTV says the awards shows beat out the Screen Actors Guild, ESPYs, Critics Choice, People's Choice, and Spirit Awards.

In social, the MTV Movie & TV Awards and MTV Movie & TV Awards: Unscripted rang up 159 million social video views and 15 million engagements across the two nights, the most ever.

#MTVAwards trended for 8 hours in the U.S. and for 4 hours worldwide. The show had 5 trending topics in the U.S. including Anthony Mackie, Addison Rae, Kathryn Hahn and Elizabeth Olsen.

This year’s show will be part of a two night event. The MTV Movie & TV Awards will air live from Los Angeles on May 16. On May 17, the inaugural edition of MTV’s Movie & TV Awards: Unscripted will air, honoring the top reality TV shows and moments.

Awards shows, long a tentpole for MTV, have not been faring well lately. Sunday’s Oscars telecast saw its ratings dive more than 50% from last year’s already record low levels. The Movie & TV Awards didn't appear during the pandemic in 2020, but viewership was down 46% in 2019, when they appeared on 10 Viacom cable networks.

Jones is best known for her run on NBC’s Saturday Night Live and appearances in films including Ghostbusters. Jones currently hosts and executive produces Supermarket Sweep on ABC.

She is nominated for an MTV Movie & TV Award this year in the Best Comedic Performance category for her role in Coming 2 America.

As part of the Unscripted awards, fans can vote to pick winners in 25 categories including Best Kiss, Breakthrough Performance and Best Show at vote.mtv.com.

Three cable-based awards shows drew huge audiences on social media last week, according to Nielsen.

BET’s annual BET Awards live telecast airing last night was the most popular entertainment-based show on social media during the week of June 18-24, generating 2.1 million combined Facebook and Twitter interactions, according to Nielsen’s weekly social media report.

MTV’s June 18 MTV Movies & TV Awards garnered 1.9 million social media interactions, while Disney Channel’s June 23 telecast of the 2018 Radio Disney Music Awards finished third with 816,000 interactions, according to the network.

MSNBC’s June 19 episode of The Rachel Maddow Show and USA Network’s June 18 Monday Night Raw episode rounded out the top five list, according to Nielsen.

Fox and Telemundo’s coverage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup tournament scored the top five most social live sports telecasts for the week, led by the June 21 Argentina-Croatia telecast which drew 607,000 combined Facebook and Twitter interactions, according to Nielsen.
