The third and final season of Mr Inbetween, a funky little drama about a man juggling fatherhood and hitman responsibilities in Australia, begins on FX May 25. 

Scott Ryan created Mr Inbetween, and plays Ray Shoesmith. While they are vastly different shows, Mr Inbetween calls to mind Curb Your Enthusiasm, with both Ray and Larry facing off with the interloper who threatens to ruin their day over matters that are often pretty trivial. While Larry may belittle the bad guy, Ray usually punches them. 

The season premiere depicts the way the series deftly places the domestic stuff alongside the more brutal activity. As children frolic in a swimming pool, a gang of hitmen seated next to the pool go over the specifics of their next mission--a gun deal where the gang aims to walk away with both the money and the guns.  

The season premiere also sees Ray in jail after an incident involving a couple pedestrians who stumbled into his orbit. His cellmate, locked up for violating a restraining order with a fairly innocent text to his wife about their daughter, is poorly suited for prison life. 

Once again juxtaposing domestic ennui with felonious hijinks, the cellmate teaches Ray to meditate as Ray shares details of a man he roughed up. 

All the while, Ray deals with his daughter Brittany. Age 12, Britt doesn’t want or need Dad around all that much, and their relationship is frayed as she learns more about Dad’s dodgy day job.

Season three doesn’t necessarily break new ground, but Ray’s stories are always fun to watch. Shot in Australia, Mr Inbetween consistently offers lively entertainment, a few laughs and lots of violence, and one can’t help but root for Ray Shoesmith. 

Mr. Inbetween, the half-hour show about a man juggling his responsibilities as father and hit man, starts season three on FX May 25. There are nine episodes and it will be the final season.

Two episodes are on FX May 25, with a new one premiering weekly. Episodes will be available the day after premiere on FX on Hulu.

“Juggling parental responsibilities, complicated relationships, a viciously smart pre-teen daughter and an aging parent while earning a living would be difficult for anyone, but it’s particularly tricky when you’re a criminal for hire,” goes the show description. 

Ryan plays Ray Shoesmith. Season three sees Ray mourn the loss of Bruce while figuring out how to care for his aging father, played by Kenny Graham. Daughter Brittany, played by Chika Yasumura, grows into a young woman and pulls further away from Ray, learning more about who he really is. 

Justin Rosniak, Matt Nable and Damon Herriman are also in the cast.  

Mr. Inbetween is executive produced by Edgerton, Ryan and Michele Bennett. The series was shot in Australia and is produced by Blue-Tongue Films and Pariah Productions in association with FX Productions.

A new season of Mr Inbetween is on FX. Scott Ryan created the show and stars in it, too. He plays Ray Shoesmith, who does a bit of thug work in Australia and raises his daughter as well.

Season one had six episodes, and season two has 11. “It’s a darker season,” Ryan said. “Ray is pretty bulletproof in season one. But he’s not as bulletproof as he thought he was.”

Ryan promises “more of a character study” in the new season.

We can’t all relate to Ray’s thuggish ways, but the character is relatable nonetheless, like Larry David facing down those who transgress his version of the social code in Curb.

“We’ve all got a bit of Ray in us,” Ryan said.

Nash Edgerton executive produces alongside Ryan. Edgerton’s stepdaughter, Chika Yasumura, plays Ray’s daughter Brittany. Ray and Brittany share a memorable scene in the third episode, after Brittany walks in on Dad in a compromising position.

Edgerton fought hard to have Ryan play Ray on the show. “He’s got a great natural ability,” he said. “He’s very real in any scene you put him in.”

Season eight of Bering Sea Gold, about miners searching for precious metals off Nome, Alaska, begins on Discovery Sept. 17. Shawn Pomrenke is known as Mr. Gold around those parts, but Ken Kerr wants the title. Kerr has a 600-ton gold-digging behemoth working on his behalf.

“What you’re looking at is a true clash of the titans,” said John Slaughter, who executive produces for Discovery.

Nome has a lot of gold shops and bars, said Slaughter. It’s dusty in the summer and freakin’ cold in the winter. “Weather plays a huge factor this season,” he added.

After seven seasons, one wonders how many viewers have decided on a career change, setting down their remotes and departing the family room for Nome. Slaughter said there have been a few, though most don’t last.

“It’s a hard life,” he said. “People fall off quickly.”

While Shawn and Ken battle it out on the sea, old hand Vernon Adkison makes his way down the Yukon River to join them. Along the way, he hits a sandbar and gets stuck.

Also on the scene is Emily Riedel, the most successful female dredge owner in Nome.

Slaughter said new strategy, enhanced science and better tactics are deployed this season. They result in the highest amount of gold harvested in the history of Bering Sea Gold.

“It’s a battle between Ken and Shawn for who is top dog miner up in Nome,” Slaughter said. “It’s a neck-and-neck horse race.”

Returning series highlight the week’s upcoming premieres as networks prepare for the upcoming fall television season.

HBO’s porn industry-themed series The Deuce (pictured) returns Sept. 9 for its third and final season, while Audience Network’s thriller series Mr. Mercedes makes its third season debut Sept. 10, and FX’s Mr. Inbetween drops the first episode of its sophomore campaign on Sept. 12.

New shows premiering this week include Amazon Prime Video’s animated series Undone and Netflix’s drama series Unbelievable, both debuting Sept. 13.

FX has renewed its original drama series Mr. Inbetween for a second season, the network said Tuesday.

The Australian show, created by and starring Scott Ryan, will return for a second season in 2019. Mr. Inbetween is averaging 2.25 million viewers across all linear and non-linear platforms in Nielsen Live+7 numbers, said the network.

“It’s been fantastic to see Mr. Inbetween embraced by fans and critics. The exciting, offbeat and fast moving first season is defined by the magnetic performance and creative vision of Scott Ryan and director Nash Edgerton,” said Eric Schrier, co-president of original programming for FX Networks and FX Productions in a statement. “Our thanks to Nash and Scott, our partners at FOXTEL, fellow executive producer Jason Burrows, producer Michele Bennett, and the great cast and crew. We can’t wait to return to Ray’s world in season two of Mr Inbetween.”
