                                <p>Discovery Communications&apos; cable networks outlined a number of new original series and specials as part of the company’s upfront presentation Tuesday.</p><p><a href="https://www.nexttv.com/news/atandt-and-discovery-merge-media-assets-forming-tv-giant">Read also: AT&T and discovery Merge Media Assets Forming TV Giant </a></p><p>Discovery chief U.S. Advertising sales officer Jon Steinlauf declared during the virtual  presentation that this year the company&apos;s linear brands will produce more than 5,000 new hours of original programming, or about 15 new episodes a night.</p><p>Discovery chief lifestyle brands officer Kathleen Finch announced new shows for  HGTV, TLC, Food Network, including HGTV’s <em>Battle on the Beach, Breaking Bland and Curb Appeal Xtreme; </em>Food Network’s<em> Grill of Victory, Chopped: Alton’s Maniacal Baskets; Buddy vs Duff: Bakers Battle; </em>and<em> </em>TLC’s <em>You, Me & My Ex, So Freakin Cheap and Addicted to Marriage.</em></p><p>Discovery and Factual chief brand officer Nancy Daniels announced Discovery Channel&apos;s Simon Fuller-produced documentary series <em>Serengeti II, </em>narrated by Lupita Nyong&apos;o.</p><p>Also, Animal Planet will offer such shows as<em> Otter Dynasty </em>and <em>The Mighty Underdogs, while </em>MotorTrend will tap actor Kevin Hart for a new series Kevin Hart’s <em>Muscle Car Crew</em> and will debunk automotive myths with <em>Motor Mythbusters.</em></p><p>A list of new series along with network-created descriptions appears below:</p><p><strong>Discovery Channel </strong></p><p><em>Getaway Driver</em></p><p>An event like no other, Michelle Rodriguez brings the ultimate driving fantasy to life in Getaway Driver. This eight-episode competition series features 24 elite drivers from drift champions to street racers to hotshot YouTubers who compete to prove they have the skill behind the wheel and the mental toughness to outrun and out-drive the competition in a massive nearly 60-acre compound filled with obstacles. Part Baby Driver, part Grand Theft Auto, the Getaway Drivers will put it all on the line – sacrificing their own cars for the opportunity to be the wheelman in a real-life car chase. The rules are simple... evade the pursuers and escape the compound to score some cold hard cash. </p><p><em> Serengeti II </em></p><p>Discovery journeys back to the vast, nearly untouched plains of Tanzania revisiting some of our favorite faces and meeting new ones along the way in Serengeti II. This team will add in super-sized hydraulics, so their custom lowriders launch eight or ten feet in the air. Viewers will watch their custom cars, from building all the way to their trash-talking hop competitions, that can happen at huge car shows—or at a downtown LA street corner at midnight. These garages must juggle the everyday business of running their shops - building lowriders for customers while also crafting vehicles to face off against rivals in hop contests. Because in the lowriding game, winning equals business with tens of thousands of dollars at stake in each vehicle.</p><p><strong>HGTV</strong></p><p><em> Two Steps Home</em></p><p>Home renovation experts Jon Pierre and Mary Tjon-Joe-Pin will take a two-step approach to guide clients through the oftentimes daunting process of selling their current house and buying a new one that perfectly fits their needs in Two Steps Home. In step one, Mary, a designer, will employ creative and budget-conscious design ideas to ensure the client’s house sells for top dollar. For step two, Jon Pierre, a real estate agent, will use his savvy know-how of the Houston market to find the client a new property that meets most of their wish list but needs a few renovations to make it perfect. The mentors will put their reputations on the line each week while star judges Mike Holmes (Holmes + Holmes) and Mina Starsiak Hawk (Good Bones) will choose which team wins the featured weekly challenge. The team who adds the most value to their home will walk away with a $50,000 grand prize to use towards their next flip, and their mentor will have ultimate bragging rights. The new episodes of Battle on the Beach will also be available to stream the same day on discovery+.  </p><p><em>Breaking Bland</em></p><p>The Charleston, South Carolina-based HGTV series Breaking Bland introduces designer Mary Welch Stasik. During each episode, Mary Welch will break any design boundary and encourage clients to eschew traditional looks to create a truly personalized space.</p><p><em> Curb Appeal Xtreme</em></p><p>HGTV’s popular outdoor renovation show Curb Appeal will get a fresh spin in Curb Appeal Xtreme. The new series will combine the architectural and design savvy of John Gidding, the horticulture and landscape design genius of Jamie Durie and the custom carpentry and furniture wizardry of Rachel Taylor. The six hour-long episodes will follow the talented trio as they dramatically overhaul the front and backyards of homes in Nashville, Tennessee, creating breathtaking outdoor living spaces that include features such as playhouses, yoga pavilions and open-air kitchens to maximize each property’s potential and value. </p><p><strong> Food Network</strong></p><p><em> Grill of Victory</em></p><p>Sabin Lomac hosts a thrilling competition that brings America&apos;s best backyard grillers to the ultimate backyard grilling arena as hardcore home cooks with a passion for barbecue go head-to-head to prove their talents over three rounds of intense cooking battles. A rotating panel of judges, including Susie Bulloch, Darnell Ferguson, Tregaye Fraser and Christian Petroni, will help determine who grilled their way to the top.                                 <p>Discovery Communications said it has launched Motor Trend OnDemand, on Amazon Channels in the United Kingdom, allowing car enthusiasts across the pond to stream hundreds of hours of content tailored to their particular passions, including digital series originals <em>Roadkill,</em><em>Dirt Every Day</em> and <em>Head 2 Head</em>.  The launch on Amazon Channels includes VOD from Discovery’s library of motoring content such as series hits like <em>Fast N Loud </em>and <em>Wheeler Dealers.  </em></p><p>Amazon Channels in the UK is a significant international launch for Motor Trend OnDemand, and marks a gear change in the global expansion of an ambitious brand designed to fuel automotive superfans on all screens.</p><p>“We know Prime members in the UK have a big appetite for motoring shows, as evidenced by the success of Prime Original "The Grand Tour", so we’re delighted to be offering them hundreds of hours of high quality motoring content through the launch of Motor Trend OnDemand,”</p><p>Amazon Prime Video Europe managing director Channel & Sport Alex Green said in a statement.</p><p>According to Discovery, Motor Trend is the No. 1 automotive publisher on YouTube with more than 5 million subscribers and nearly 1.5 billion cumulative video views.</p><p>Discovery formed a <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/news/discovery-ten-form-auto-focused-linear-direct-consumer-venture-414399" data-original-url="https://www.multichannel.com/news/discovery-ten-form-auto-focused-linear-direct-consumer-venture-414399">joint venture in August</a> with Motor Trend parent TEN: The Enthusiast Network, now TEN: A Discovery Communications Company, which combined the company’s automotive TV channel and content with TEN’s automotive digital, direct-to-consumer, social and live event portfolio. The TEN portfolio includes brands such as Motor Trend, HOT ROD, Roadkill, Automobile, and more than 20 others. The venture is designed to create a top automotive media company and a destination for automotive enthusiasts and auto buyers on all screens and platforms.</p><p>Access to Motor Trend OnDemand for Amazon Prime customers is £3.99 a month.</p><p>“As we have done in sport with Eurosport, Discovery identified the automotive genre as a significant strategic opportunity for our digital expansion,” Discovery Networks International and Eurosport president of Digital, & CEO TEN/Motor Trend Michael Lang said in a statement. “The international expansion of Motor Trend OnDemand on Amazon Channels UK is part of our strategy to develop great global formats, digital-first products in key interests.  Working with the world class team at TEN to combine our motoring content expertise and launch Motor Trend OnDemand to car enthusiasts around the globe is part of our drive to target superfans with the content they love on all screens.” </p>

The new venture – to be called TEN: A Discovery Communications Company – will be headed by Discovery Communications’ chief commercial officer Paul Guyardo, who will become chairman and CEO of the venture in addition to his current responsibilities. Also leading the new venture will be Scott Dickey, president of TEN, and Bob Scanlon, who will be appointed president of Velocity and TEN Video Content. Both Dickey and Scanlon will report to Guyardo.</p><p>TEN has more than 20 brands across the automotive space in addition to <em>Motor Trend</em>, including <em>Hot Rod</em>, <em>Roadkill</em> and <em>Automobile.</em> The venture will create a top automotive media company in the U.S. and an unrivaled destination for automotive enthusiasts, auto buyers and advertisers looking to reach this high-quality audience on all screens and platforms. Discovery will take a majority controlling interest in the venture.</p><p>“Continuing with Discovery’s strategy to reach superfans on all platforms in popular and durable content categories, this joint venture brings together the most trusted media brands in the automotive industry to create a multiplatform business with the reach, talent, and consumer insights to nourish car enthusiasts on all devices,” Discovery CEO David Zaslav said in a statement. “By combining popular brands like <em>Motor Trend, Hot Rod</em> and Velocity, this venture will create a content engine that fuels not only our linear platform but also new direct-to-consumer, social and mobile opportunities with the goal of owning the car vertical across all platforms.”</p><p>The new venture also is expected to give advertisers a unified offering with a combined reach of more than 150 million automotive superfans and car buyers, proven expertise in the branded content space, as well as sophisticated audience targeting capabilities.</p><p>While TEN’s print businesses will not be contributed to the new venture, a commercial agreement will allow for continued cross-promotion between the print portfolio and the new venture for a true multiplatform<strong>,</strong> 360-degree advertising offering.</p><p>“This venture is about giving advertisers the quintessential way to reach auto enthusiasts, prospective car buyers and an affluent male audience that buys a lot more than cars,” uyardo said in a statement. “It’s also about giving consumers OTT access to world-class automotive content on every screen.”</p><p>As part of the venture, Discovery will add Velocity content to TEN’s <em>Motor Trend</em> OnDemand subscription video on demand (SVOD) service. Motor Trend OnDemand will feature thousands of hours of automotive video, including exclusive original series, such as <em>Roadkill</em>, <em>Head2Head</em>, <em>Dirt Everyday</em> and <em>Ignition</em> alongside motorsports and live auto event content. <em>Motor Trend</em> OnDemand also will offer new, original content featuring some of the best-known talent from series across TEN and Velocity, including <em>Wheeler Dealers, Bitchin’ Rides, Barrett-Jackson Live, Fantomworks, Speed is the New Black, Iron Resurrection, The Auto Firm with Alex Vega</em>, and <em>Garage Squad</em>, and will be available across connected devices via IOS/Apple TV, Google Play, Roku, Xbox, Chromecast and Amazon platforms.</p><p>“Velocity is the fastest growing network on cable since launching in 2011 and is the #1 television destination for automotive super fans, with a stable of experts and personalities that represent the most respected names in the car world,” Scanlon said in a statement. “By combining Velocity and TEN’s high-quality content, wide-reaching talented hosts and comprehensive production expertise, we are creating a powerhouse of short-, mid- and long-form content for the passionate and growing base of automotive super fans in the U.S. and around the world.” </p><p>In the future, TEN has an option to put its stake in the venture to Discovery at fair market value.
