Modern Family, ABC's sitcom about a multigenerational family in Southern California, will premiere on TBS on Monday, September 25.

In addition to Modern Family, TBS also will start airing longer daily marathons of The Big Bang Theory, which is cable’s top-rated acquired series, according to TBS’ owner, Warner Bros. Discovery.

“Our audience continually seeks out popular comedies like Friends, The Big Bang Theory and Modern Family, so now that we have all three of these iconic series on TBS, we can build an even bigger, more engaged audience,” said Julie Taylor, chief of content strategy and insights, U.S. Networks Group, Warner Bros. Discovery, in a statement. “We have the best in class content that drives an audience from daytime through primetime and we do that by leveraging our fans’ affinity for comedies and by creating daily destinations.”

The show, which was co-created by Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd, was an enormous hit when it premiered on ABC in 2009. It sold in a preemptive syndication deal to Fox and USA Network and premiered on those platforms in 2013, but its ratings in syndication were never as strong as its broadcast network performance promised. The Fox Owned Stations’ contracts for the show end after this season and are unlikely to be renewed as Fox moves away from sitcoms.

Modern Family ended its run in April 2020 after its 11th season on ABC.

A five-time Emmy winner for Outstanding Comedy Series, Modern Family stars Ed O’Neill as family patriarch Jay Pritchett, who is remarried to Gloria (Sofia Vergara), who has a son, Manny (Rico Rodriguez). Jay’s daughter, Claire (Julie Bowen) is married to Phil Dunphy (Ty Burrell), and they have three kids: Haley (Sarah Hyland), Alex (Ariel Winter) and Luke (Nolan Gould). Jay’s son, Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) is married to Cameron (Eric Stonestreet), who have adopted a Vietnamese baby, Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons).

Modern Family was produced by 20th Television in association with Steven Levitan Productions and Picador Productions. Besides Levitan and Lloyd, Paul Corrigan, Brad Walsh, Danny Zuker, Abraham Higginbotham, Jeffrey Richman, Elaine Ko, Stephen Lloyd, Vali Chandrasekaran, Jack Burditt, Jon Pollack and Jeff Morton also served as executive producers. The series is distributed by Disney Entertainment.

Updated 3/9/21: This article was changed after new information was provided by NBCUniversal

Peacock looks serious about getting more of those 33 million “sign-ups” to pay up.

Since launching all 11 seasons and 250 episodes of Modern Family on Feb. 3, the Comcast/NBCUniversal-owned streaming service had been letting users of the ad-supported, free Peacock tier have access to the first 12 episodes of the first season.

You can still watch 12 free episodes of Modern Family for free on Peacock. But that selection is a bit more random, and dare we say, not as user-friendly to consume if you're not a paid subscriber.

This week, Peacock changed which 12 episodes are gratis--you can't just simply binge halfway through season 1 and get hooked. They selected free installments are seemingly all over the place. And you have to know where to find the free episodes, too.

Peacock users who haven't signed up for the $4.99-a-month "Premium" version, or the $9.99 "Premium Plus" iteration without commercials, are no longer able to watch season 1, episode 2 (aka "The Bicycle Thief") for free. If they click on it--or season 1 episodes 3-12, for that matter--they're now sent to a landing page promoting premium sign-ups.

Within the "seasons" portion of the menu, there's now an option for "free episodes," which gives non-paying users of the AVOD platform access to a select dozen installments placed throughout the 11-season run of the show. Editor's note: We couldn't find these free shows until Peacock reps told us where to look.

"In honor of Women’s History Month, we have made 12 episodes (including the pilot) free that celebrate the female leads of the series," said a Peacock rep, explaining the current selection strategy, which might seem entirely random without that explanation.

Notably, Peacock also sent out an email to registered users, free and paid, Tuesday, urging them to, “Laugh more with the family and upgrade to stream all ten [sic] seasons" of Modern Family.

Indeed, seemingly long gone are those carefree days of, say, early January, when Peacock was merely trying to engage free and paid users alike with unfettered access to The Office.

There seems to be a broader push towards paid premium going on with Peacock right now, and easy access to Modern Family is just part of the enticement.

On Monday, Peacock announced that WWE programming would hit the platform on March 18, and it, too, would be exclusive to paid Peacock subscribers.

For any company currently vested in the "streaming wars," you can make the case that more paying customers are needed.

NBCU just filed papers with the SEC, revealing $914 million in losses for Peacock. on about $118 million in revenue in 2020.

And NBCU said in January that the platform had attracted 33 million “sign-ups,” but it’s unclear as to how many of those users are actually paying for the service. In early February, The Information, citing internal NBCU documents, reported that Peacock only has around 11.3 million regular users.

Modern Family will be streaming on both Hulu and Peacock in an arrangement that’s unusual for this phase of TV’s streaming war.

The entire hit series--250 episodes--will be available on both services starting Feb. 3.

Modern Family aired on The Walt Disney Co.’s ABC and was produced by 20th Television, now a part of Disney. Apparently Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution was able to maximize the series value by selling it to both in the family to Disney’s Hulu as well as to Peacock, owned Comcast’s NBCUniversal.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Comcast still owns 33.3% of Hulu and has agreed to sell that stake to Disney for at least $5.8 billion. As Hulu's valuation increases, so does the price Disney will pay Comcast for the stake.

“Peacock is home to a massive catalog of iconic movies and shows, so a groundbreaking comedy like Modern Family is a perfect addition and representative of the quality entertainment our free and premium customers enjoy on the service,” said Val Boreland, executive VP, Content Acquisitions, NBCUniversal Entertainment, Television & Streaming. “Because viewers of all ages love Modern Family, we are creating a fan experience on Peacock that goes beyond just episodes of the series to include curated collections, bonus content, and more.”

“Thanks to its sharp writing and an eccentric but exceedingly likable cast of characters, Modern Family ushered in the return of the family sitcom and offered viewers a unique and refreshing portrayal of family life,” said Brian Henderson, VP, Content Partnerships, Hulu. “We were fortunate to bring this beloved series to Hulu audiences next-day during its celebrated run, and now we’re excited to offer every episode so new fans can meet the Pritchetts, Dunphys and Tuckers and old friends can visit them again.”

Modern Family premiered in 2009 and ran for 11 seasons. It was nominated for 85 Emmy Awards and won 22 including five for Outstanding Comedy Series.

Modern Family was produced by 20th Television in association with Steven Levitan Productions and Picador Productions. Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd were co-creators/executive producers. Paul Corrigan, Brad Walsh, Danny Zuker, Abraham Higginbotham, Jeffrey Richman, Elaine Ko, Stephen Lloyd, Vali Chandrasekaran, Jack Burditt, Jon Pollack and Jeff Morton also served as executive producers on the final season. The series is distributed by Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution.

Can ABC’s Modern Family make it five comedy series wins in a row? Are Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black and House of Cards ready to break through?

Those are among the questions to ponder following Mindy Kaling and Carson Daly’s announcement of the 66th Primetime Emmy nominations, with the ceremony slated to air on NBC on August 25 from Los Angeles.

To repeat, the concluding campaign of Breaking Bad will have to top HBO’s True Detective and Game of Thrones, and Netflix’s House of Cards. Moreover, Vince Gilligan’s final turns of the Walter White saga will have to surpass AMC stablemate and four-time winner Mad Men and PBS’s Downton Abbey.

For its part, Modern Family is looking to match NBC’s Frasier 1994-98 run with a comedy category five-peat of its own. CBS’s Big Bang Theory is in the hunt again, along with FX’s Louie and Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black. HBO is well-represented with Veep and rookie Silicon Valley vying for the statue.

Per usual, HBO set the nomination pace with 99, down from 108 for the 2013 season. CBS was second with 47, one more than NBC. FX, which had 26 last year, jumped into fourth with 45. ABC had 37 nods.

Streaming service Netflix continues to make waves among traditional providers and in Tinseltown, notching 31 nods, 17 more than a year ago. AMC accumulated 26, while Showtime garnered 24, seven fewer than in 2013. However, the premium programmer had an industry-best 11 actor nominations, including a half dozen among the main actor categories. Fox had 18 total nominations.

HBO’s biggest series ever, Game of Thrones, led all drama series with 19 nods, including two in the key acting categories: Lena Headey as best supporting actress for her portrayal of Cersei Lannister, and Peter Dinklage for his Tyrion Lannister.

For its part, FX scored very big, as miniseries Fargo earned 18 nominations, including nods for Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman as top thespians, while American Horror Story's "Coven" iteration earned 17. Breaking Bad had 16 for its farewell trek, the most for a basic-cable drama and the most in its run, as did the HBO telefilm The Normal Heart. NBC's venerable Saturday Night Live welcomed 14 nods, while Netflix streamed up a baker's dozen of nods for House of Cards, one more than Orange Is the New Black. HBO's True Detective also tallied 12 nominations.

The best drama actor nominees are topped by last year’s winner, Jeff Daniels in HBO’s The Newsroom. He will look to hold off fellow HBOers Woody Harrelson and Oscar-winner Matthew McConaughey in True Detective. That marks the first time a cable network has three nominees in this major category.

Kevin Spacey earned a second nomination for Netflix's House of Cards. Bryan Cranston is in the running with his final turn as Breaking Bad’s high school chemistry teacher turned criminal Walter White, along with perennial contender, Jon Hamm’s Don Draper in AMC’s Mad Men.

Claire Danes will get a chance to add a third consecutive best drama actress statue for her work on Showtime's Homeland. The premium network also has another nominee with Lizzy Caplan in its Masters of Sex. Julianna Margulies for CBS’s The Good Wife and Kerry Washinton for ABC’s Scandal represent broadcast’s hopes here, while PBS and Netflix are represented by Michelle Dockery in Downton Abbey and Robin Wright in House of Cards, respectively.

Showtime matched HBO’s three drama actor noms with a trio among the comedy ranks with Matt LeBlanc for Episodes, William Macy for Shameless and Don Cheadle for House of Lies.
