"At 26 years old, there is no limit to Canelo's star power as he continues to cross over to mainstream audiences. Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum was quoted by ESPN.com on Feb 5 as saying a deal had been reached between Showtime (which has two fights left on a six-fight deal with Mayweather) and HBO (which televises all of Pacquiao’s fights) on such points as announcers and which network would get rights to the fight replay.

The two premium powers have worked together in the past, having co-distributed the 2002 Lennox Lewis-Mike Tyson fight. But Showtime Sports executive vice president and general manager Stephen Espinoza refuted Arum’s claim of a compromise, saying the two premium programmers were still negotiating.

“There are still a few significant issues on the networks’ side and the fighters’ side,” Espinoza said. “While we’re optimistic, it’s still premature to say the network deal is done.”

HBO officials would not comment on negotiations between the two parties. The network earlier in the week said in a statement that it was not impeding negotiations for the fight after published reports intimated that HBO has less incentive to make the fight than Showtime.

Despite the gamesmanship between the two networks and the boxers’ camps, the Mayweather- Pacquiao fight — which could set all-time PPV buy and revenue records — has yet to be signed. Industry observers said the later the negotiations go, the less likely it is the fight will happen, given the time needed for promotion and for the boxers to train.

HBO Sports president Ken Hershman said it would benefit all parties to wrap up the talks.

“For us, the sooner the better to get this done and move on because we have a lot of other fights on the runway that we want to start moving along,” he said during an HBO press conference last Wednesday for the network’s April 25 Wladimir Klitschko-Bryant Jennings heavyweight championship fight telecast from Madison Square Garden.

“This is an important step, and we hope it gets resolved as soon as possible,” Hershman added.

The much anticipated Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather mega boxing match may happen after all.

Pacquiao has agreed to terms for a mega May 2 pay-per-view boxing match against Mayweather, Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum told the Examiner.com Tuesday.

Arum told the website that Mayweather’s representatives have also agreed to a May fight, but Mayweather has yet to sign off on the deal.

Mayweather recently stated during a Showtime interview last month that he wanted the fight to happen. “We are ready. Let's make it happen. May 2. Mayweather versus Manny Pacquiao. Let's do it," he said during the Dec. 12 interview.

The report marks the closest the two fighters have come to making the mega fight. Negotiations for the fight have been marred over the years by disputes over blood sampling issues, purse splits and bad blood between the two fighters.

If the fight happens, many observers believe it will be the most lucrative pay-per-view boxing match in history. The two fighters are arguably the biggest names in the fight game, and their fights have generated the most PPV buys and revenue over the past decade.

Mayweather’s Sept. 2013 fight against Canelo Alverez is the most lucrative PPV event in history, generating more than $150 million.

The fight would most likely be co-promoted by HBO -- which has Pacquiao under contract -- and Showtime, which has two fights left on a six-fight TV deal with Mayweather. The two companies reportedly are talking about a potential deal, according to ESPN.com.

Of course Mayweather and Pacquiao have been down this road before, and most boxing fans won’t believe the fight will happen until the two fighters actually step into the ring. Let’s see what transpires over the next few weeks.

Time will tell.

Floyd Mayweather Jr., in an interview on Showtime Friday night, said he wants to fight Manny Pacquiao on May 2.

The would-be megafight – attempts to make the match have been KOd in years past – would be a boon for boxing, pitting the sweet science's top performers of recent vintage, and the various constiunents of the pay-per-view industry.

In an interview on Dec. 12 in San Antonio, where his promotional company was putting on a boxing card, Mayweather called for the fight to take place on Cinco de Mayo weekend, a period when“Money” has often put the gloves on.

"We are ready. Let's make it happen. May 2. Mayweather versus Manny Pacquiao. Let's do it," he said during the Dec. 12 interview.

Pacquiao and his promoter Bob Arum have been pushing for the fight in recent weeks, before and after' "Pac Man's" six knockkdown performence versus Chis Algieri. According to published reports, Arum has held talks with CBS president and CEO Leslie Moonves in an effort to forge a deal under which Showtime and HBO, which has Pacquiao under contract, would produce a joint pay-per-view. The companies teamed together for the 2002 heavyweight championship fight between Lennox Lewis, who was signed to HBO, and Mike Tyson, who was with Showtime.

Pacquiao, in response, to Mayweather’s claim, was optimistic, but remained skeptical until contracts are actually drawn.

Previous attempts to get the fighters in the ring broke down over blood sampling issues, purse splits and animus between Pac Man and Money, who exacerbated the bad blood with a homophobic rant against the Filipino. Mayweather's proclamation also comes in the face of the general perception that he has been ducking Pacquiao.

History and gegotiations aside, there could be another impediment to the long-awaited matchup: May 2 is already the target date for a potential HBO PPV fight between middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and former junior middleweight titleholder Canelo Alvarez. That match could be the first for Alvarez on HBO after he left Showtime in September.

Alvarez's loss to Mayweather on Sept. 14, 2013 was the most lucrative PPV event in boxing history, generating more than $150 million.

With pay-per-view buys stultifying for both senescent fighters – Mayweather has two fights left on his six-bout Showtime contract and has talked about retirement after it runs its course, while Pacquiao holds political office in his homeland -- an encounter figures to jolt buy-rates and the revenue pie in 2014.

As Money said: "Let’s make it Cinco de Mayweather" ,,, and Pacquiao.
