CBS will re-air Sunday's Billy Joel concert telecast this Friday (April 19) after several CBS-affiliated stations abruptly cut part of Sunday's telecast of the singer’s taped concert performance. 

In a statement Monday, the network said that "a network programming timing error" ended it's telecast of  The 100th: Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden – The Greatest Arena Run of All Time approximately two minutes early in the Eastern and Central Time Zones. 

"We apologize to Mr. Joel, his fans, our affiliated stations and our audience whose viewing experience was interrupted during the last song," CBS said in its statement. "Due to the overwhelming demand from his legion of fans, Billy Joel: The 100th -- Live At Madison Square Garden will be rebroadcast in its entirety on CBS on April 19th at 9:00 PM ET/PT." 

The concert is also available on the Paramount Plus streaming service.

The taped concert was slated to air on CBS stations Sunday from 9 pm. to 11 p.m., but was delayed by the network’s extended live coverage of the Masters PGA golf tournament before several CBS-affiliated stations in the Eastern and Central Time Zones prematurely ended the telecast in favor of its scheduled 11 p.m. local news telecasts, according to published reports.

The concert telecast reportedly ended in the middle of Joel’s performance of his iconic The Piano Man song, further angering viewers who took to social media to complain about the decision.

Golf legend Tiger Woods expects to play at the Masters golf tournament this weekend, more than a year after a serious car accident threatened to end his career.

Woods announced his intentions to play in the prestigious tournament Tuesday during a press conference for the event, which begins on Thursday at Augusta National Golf Club. Woods hasn’t played in a major pro tournament since suffering severe leg injuries in a February 2021 car crash. Woods has also suffered from debilitating back injuries throughout the latter part of his illustrious career, in which he has won the Masters five times. 

The last PGA Major tournament Woods played in was the November 2020 Masters tournament.

Woods, who this past December played with his son Charlie at the PNC Championship celebrity/family golf tournament, said during the conference that he would practice on Wednesday before making a final decision about competing in the tournament.

The 2021 Masters golf tournament tees off this weekend’s lineup of live sport events. 

CBS will offer live final round coverage of the prestigious Masters tournament Saturday and Sunday from Augusta, Ga. The event comes just five months after the 2020 Masters tournament, which was rescheduled due to the pandemic. 

In other sports, ESPN on Saturday night will provide coverage of the NCAA Frozen Four men’s college hockey championship tournament finals between St. Cloud State and Massachusetts. 

On the combat sports front, ABC will feature a Saturday afternoon live UFC mixed martial arts fight between middleweights Marvin Vettori-Kevin Holland. From the squared ring, ESPN Saturday night will air the Joe Smith Jr-Maxim Vlasov World Boxing Organization light heavyweight championship fight, while Showtime will feature a fight card highlighted by the Jerwin Ancajas-Jonathan Javier Rodriguez junior bantamweight title fight. DAZN will also step in the ring with two female championship fights. 

Also on Saturday night, ABC will feature an NBA matchup between the L.A. Lakers and the Brooklyn Nets, two of the top teams in the league.

From the motor racing track, NBC on Saturday will air the Monster Energy Supercross race from Atlanta.

ESPN on Sunday will present a national Major League Baseball game telecast featuring the Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves, while MLB Network will provide a doubleheader slate featuring the New York Yankees-Tampa Bay Rays and the Washington Nationals-L.A. Dodgers games.

Most-Watched Shows and Networks 

Via Vizio’s Inscape, the TV data company with insights from a panel of more than 16 million active and opted-in smart TVs. Data is linear, live TV only and includes all episode types (new and reruns). Rankings are by percent share duration (i.e., time spent watching).

For the first time, college football overtook NFL games for watch-time last week, with 3.68% of minutes watched vs. 2.09%. The 2020 Masters Tournament was third with 1.70% share duration. Various morning and news programs rose up the ranking compared to the previous week. Snapped, a true-crime reality series on Oxygen, was one notable ranking newcomer.

Thanks in part to college football, GMA and the 54th Annual CMA Awards, ABC took first place for watch-time (7.79%). NBC remained in second place (7.32%), while CBS took third (6.29%), propelled by the 2020 Masters Tournament and NFL games. Lifetime continued its march up the ranking, up to No. 20 from No. 25 in the previous week.

Top Shows and Networks by TV Ad Impressions

Via iSpot.tv, the always-on TV ad measurement and attribution company. Rankings are by TV ad impressions, for new episodes only. 

The NFL is still the champ when it comes to TV ad impressions, but it’s seen slight declines in the past few weeks. For Nov. 9-15, games generated nearly 7.1 billion impressions, down from 7.3 billion the previous week; the week before that, games delivered 7.8 billion. College football took No. 2 with 2.8 billion impressions, followed by Good Morning America (754.3 million). The Voice jumped up the ranking, generating 630.5 million impressions, an increase from the previous week’s 402.1 million. The season 17 premiere of Grey’s Anatomy also made the top 25, coming in with 394.1 million — ahead of The Bachelorette (356.7 million).

Broadcast networks dominated the top of the ranking, led by ABC (6.5 billion impressions), over 1 billion of which came from college football games and 509.9 million from the 54th Annual CMA Awards. In general, football continues to be the biggest driver of impressions for broadcast networks, even amidst schedule changes and cancelled games due to COVID-19-related issues. On the non-sports side of things, Hallmark saw a 20% increase in impressions week-over-week, up to 450.8 million, as people started to tune in more to its ongoing Christmas-movie bonanza.

The Masters golf tournament takes center stage during a TV sports weekend otherwise dominated by college and pro football. 

The prestigious PGA tournament from Augusta National Golf Club will resume its weather-delayed second round Saturday morning on ESPN, with third and fourth round action slated for CBS on Saturday and Sunday.  Dustin Johnson and Justin Thomas share the lead going into Saturday morning’s action. 

The college football schedule continues even as more games were cancelled this weekend due to the ongoing pandemic. Among the top primetime games this weekend includes Wisconsin-Michigan on ABC and Oregon-Washington State on Fox.

At least 15 games had been cancelled or postponed for this weekend due to the pandemic, including top-rank Alabama’s game against LSU, Auburn-Mississippi State, Ohio State-Maryland and Pittsburgh-Georgia Tech contests.

On the boxing front, ESPN on Saturday will televise the welterweight boxing championship fight between champion Terence Crawford and former champion Kell Brook.. 

NBC and NBCSN will share telecast duties for Saturday’s IMSA 12 Hours of Sebring auto racing event, which takes place after being postponed from its original spring start date due to the pandemic. On Sunday, ESPN will telecast the Formula One Turkish Grand Prix race. 

The Masters Golf Tournament has been delayed among concerns about the coronavirus, which have led to the cancellation and postponement of nearly all high-profile sports events.

The Masters has long been a mainstay for CBS, which airs the final rounds, and for ESPN, which televises the early rounds on cable.

On Thursday, the PGA Tour canceled its golf tournaments leading up the the Masters.

The Masters had been planning to go head with the tournament as recently as March 4.

But in a statement Friday, Fred Ridely, chairman of Augusta National Golf Club, said, “considering the latest information and expert analysis, we have decided at this time to postpone the Masters Tournament, the National Women’s Amateur and the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals.”

The statement added that “Ultimately, the health and well-being of everyone associated with these events and the citizens of the Augusta community led us to this decision. We hope this postponement puts us in the best position to safely host the Masters Tournament and our amateur events at some later date.”

“We recognize this decision will affect many people, including our loyal patrons. Your patience as we make every effort to communicate effectively and efficiently is appreciated, and we will share any additional information as soon as it becomes available. Updates also will be posted to our website, Masters.com,” Ridley said.

Earlier, the NBA and the NHL canceled their regular seasons. The NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament has also been canceled and the start of the Major League Baseball season has been pushed back.
