Tyler Perry's iconic character Madea makes her return to the screen in a trailer for Netflix's original movie Tyler Perry's Madea's Homecoming debuting Feb. 25. 

The movie stars Perry as Mabel "Madea" Simmons, marking the 12th film the producer/director has played the popular character, and the first time since the 2020 film Madea Family Funeral. Perry in 2019 said he would retire the Madea character after Family Funeral, but announced production on the Netflix film in June 0f 2021.

In the movie, Madea prepares to welcome her family who have all come into town to celebrate her Great-Grandson’s graduation from college, when some hidden secrets threaten to destroy the joyous family homecoming, according to Netflix. 

Tyler Perry Studios President of Production and Development Michelle Snead will executive produce A Madea Homecoming along with Perry, who also serves as writer and director of the film. 

 Producer Tyler Perry will bring back his iconic character Madea for a new movie scheduled to debut in 2022, the streaming service said Tuesday.

The movie, A Madea Homecoming, will be the 12th film starring the popular character Mabel "Madea" Simmons, played by Perry. The movie will be produced at Tyler Perry Studios with a planned 2022 release date, said the company. Neither Netflix nor Perry released further details on the film project.

Perry said in 2019 that he would retire Madea after that year's theatrical film A Madea Family Funeral. In August 2020, BET Plus streamed a special, Tyler Perry's Madea's Farewell Play, which was billed as Perry's final stage run as Madea.

Perry’s movies, including the 11 in the Madea franchise, have grossed more than $1 billion, according to Netflix.

A Madea Homecoming continues Perry’s affiliation with Netflix after last year’s original movie A Fall From Grace. Perry is also directing for Netflix A Jazzman’s Blues, starring Joshua Boone and Solea Pfeiffer.

BET Plus will stream the stage play Tyler Perry's Madea's Farewell Play on Aug. 27, the service said Wednesday.

The play, Perry's final stage run as the iconic character Madea, pulls together many of the characters portrayed in Perry's Madea-themed movies and plays for family gathering, according to the service.

"Tyler Perry’s Madea burst onto the scene and entered our hearts over 20 years ago and we are honored to share this final stage performance with BET+ subscribers,” said Devin Griffin, General Manager, BET+. “Now, more than ever, is the time to celebrate family and unity and Tyler Perry's Madea's Farewell Play does just that.”

BET and Viacom are reportedly rolling out the welcome mat for prolific producer/director Tyler Perry in the form of a new subscription on demand streaming service, according to published reports.

The BET+ streaming service, first reported by the Wall Street Journal, would feature series and movie content from Perry as well as content from other Viacom-owned channels. Pricing for the service was not disclosed.

The network coincides with Perry’s teaming with BET beginning this year as part of an exclusive multi-year production deal in which Perry will produce exclusive, original drama and comedy series for BET, with Viacom holding exclusive licensing rights. Content on the new BET+ service would be exclusive for 18 months before moving to the linear BET channel, according to reports.

A source close to BET said the network is in talks on launching a new streaming service but could not confirm specifics.

“Tyler Perry’s coming is a drop the mic moment, and we’re all excited to see what he brings,” BET executive vice president and head of programming Connie Orlando recently told Multichannel News.

BET+ would join other subscription streaming services targeted to African-American viewers, who watch more television than any other group, according to Nielsen. African-Americans spend more than seven and a half hours per day viewing video across all platforms, two hours more than the average viewer, reported Nielsen.

The $4.99 per month Urban Movie Channel, founded by BET creator Bob Johnson and majority-owned by AMC Networks, offers acquired movies and original series targeted to African-American viewers, while Bounce TV’s $3.99 per month Brown Sugar service provides access to classic “Blaxploitation” movies like Black Caesar and Shaft from the 1970s as well as Bounce original series such as Saints & Sinners. 

Last month producer Lemmel Plummer announced plans to launch Black Box Faith, a subscription streaming service set to launch in the third quarter that will cater to faith-based African-Americans. 

The move would be Viacom's second big push this year into the direct-to-consumer marketplace, following its purchase this past January of Pluto TV.
