For the second consecutive week Netflix original series Clickbait was the most watched show on the major U.S. subscription streaming services, attracting 1.108 billion viewing minutes during the week of Sept. 6-12, according to Nielsen.

While Clickbait’s viewership performance was down by 352 million minutes week over week, it seems audiences remained taken with the kidnapping-themed, eight-part limited series thriller, starring Entourage’s Adrian Grenier as a cheating family man held hostage. The series debuted on Netflix on Aug. 25—about three weeks before the current ratings phenomenon, Squid Game, showed up. (Nielsen’s weekly ratings snapshots reveal the U.S. SVOD audience scene as it existed around a month ago, not as it appears today. And the ratings are heavily weighted towards Netflix, which has tens of millions more domestic subscribers than Amazon Prime Video, Hulu and Disney Plus.)

The Season 6 premiere of Netflix’s Lucifer, meanwhile, generated 1.052 billion viewing minutes, putting the supernatural-themed original series in second place. The 10 new Lucifer episodes, which debuted on Sept. 10, resulted in a viewing surge of more than 500% week over week, according to Nielsen. The Netflix series centers on Tom Ellis as the titular fallen angel, who works with the LAPD to take down Earthly criminals.

Lucifer ran on FOX for three seasons before being canceled. Netflix brought the Warner Bros. TV series back to life for a fourth season in 2018. In May, when Netflix released the second leg of Lucifer’s Season 5, the show captured an impressive 1.284 billion viewing minutes. Yet despite recent ratings success, Season 6 of the Warner Bros.-produced 93-episode series marks its last.

For the first time in two weeks, Netflix off-net supernatural drama Manifest drew less than a billion viewing minutes. Taking the No. 3 spot, Manifest garnered 831 million viewing minutes during the week ending Sept. 12.

The third season of Manifest was released on Netflix on Aug. 21. Canceled by NBC in June, Manifest has been a ratings giant for Netflix. Netflix has agreed to produce a 20-episode fourth and final season of the series about the mysterious disappearance and reappearance of Flight 828.

For the first time since March, a documentary made Nielsen's top 10 list. Netflix’s Turning Point: 9/11 and the War On Terror drew 691 million viewing minutes. The five-part series, created and narrated by former U.S. Marine James LaPorta, debuted on the streaming service Sept. 1 and finished in fourth place overall.

Meanwhile, off-net series Criminal Minds, Grey’s Anatomy, Cocomelon and NCIS continued to perform reliably for Netflix, filling out the middle portion of the top 10 list.

Money Heist, the Spanish thriller that was an early local-language progenitor to Squid Game—and one of Netflix’s most globally successful shows of all time—finished in ninth place 538 million viewing minutes for the week ending Sept. 12. The show bowed its fifth season on Netflix back on Sept. 3.

Canadian family drama series Heartland, adapted from Lauren Brooke’s eponymous novels, grew its audience by 9% week over week to remain in Nielsen’s top 10. The 13th season of the multi-generational saga set in Alberta, produced by the CBC, debuted on Netflix back in February. With the 15th season set to unspool in the Great White North, Netflix viewers are still eagerly awaiting Season 14 on the streaming service.

Notably, Disney Plus’ Cruella—the live-action prequel to the Disney animated classic 101 Dalmatians—which had taken the No. 3 spot the previous two weeks, dropped out of the top 10.

Also notable: Hulu comedy Only Murders in the Building debuted the first three of its 10 first-season episodes on August 31 following decent promotion, with stars Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez seemingly appearing everywhere. But with the fourth episode debuting Sept. 7, Murders saw its audience decline by 20%.

Previous Weekly Rankings:

August 30 - Sept. 5: Netflix’s 'Clickbait'
Despite eroding restrictions that are letting more and more Americans out of the house, a J.D. Power report Thursday said nearly 80% of consumers are streaming entertainment as much or more than during the height of the pandemic.

In a survey released Aug. 5, J.D. Power asked 1,209 adults in June about their streaming habits over the past six months. According to the researcher, 79% said they are streaming the same or more over that time period. In addition, the number of streaming providers per household rose to 4.5 in June from 3.9 in December, with more customers utilizing streaming apps via smart TVs, mobile phones and tablets. According to the survey, 40% of respondents access streaming apps through smart TVs (vs. 36% in December); 36% via smartphones and tablets (up from 30% in December) and 28% through a laptop computer (up from 25% in December).

According to the survey, apps are the second-most used streaming connection path. Hardware platforms like Roku, Apple TV and Chromecast also got sizable boosts for reasons ranging from retrofitting a non-connected TV to make it “smart,” or accessing services that may not be available on specific brands of smart TVs.

With that rise in consumption also comes a greater tolerance for price increases. Respondents to the survey said they spent an average of $55 per month for streaming services, up 17% since December.

Also Read: JD Power: New Streaming Services Chip Away at Netflix Dominance

J.D. Power said recent price increases from Netflix and Disney Plus are one of the culprits for the uptick in overall spend, adding that streaming services have invested heavily to add content.

But higher prices and the rise in the number of streaming services hasn’t diluted the number of total subscriptions per household, according to the J.D. Power survey. About 57% of respondents said they subscribe to 4 or more streaming services, up from 50% in December. J.D. Power said that the emergence of platforms that cater to specific content — like Discovery Plus, which focuses on home and lifestyle shows -- has helped expand the number of services consumers subscribe to.

“So while the a la carte nature of streaming could lend itself to less customer spending, it appears the inverse is happening,” J.D. Power said. “The more choices, the more temptation to get access to a specific library.”

The top three streamed shows also reflect that diversity of options, with Netflix’s Lucifer logging in at No. 1 with 5% of respondents, followed by Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale (4.4%) and HBO Max’s Friends (2.6%).

Netflix maintained the top spot among streaming services, with 89% of respondents saying they subscribe to the service, compared to 81% in December. Amazon Prime Video held second place, cracking the 70% milestone for the first time with 76% of respondents claiming to be subscribers (up from 65% in December), followed by Hulu at 64% (up from 56% in December), and Disney Plus at 52% (up from 47% in December).

The season-premiere episode of Lucifer on Netflix captured an impressive 1.284 billion viewing minutes in the U.S., according to Nielsen, making it the top show in the subscription streaming business for the week of May 24-30.

Bookmark this URL: And each week, you'll have a magic carpet ride to our report on Nielsen's flawed but deeply compelling streaming audience rankings

Notably, that was the same week that HBO Max’s Mare of Easttown, perhaps the buzziest show on TV for the month of May, had its limited series finale. Since Nielsen still isn’t measuring HBO Max in its weekly arbitration of SVOD audience performance—despite the pleadings of Reed Hastings himself—the ratings picture comes with a bit of an asterisk.

Not that it would have been easy to bedevil Lucifer, the only show among the four biggest U.S. SVOD services to surpass 1 billion streaming minutes for the week ending May 30.

The Netflix series centers on Tom Ellis as the titular fallen angel, who works with the LAPD to take down Earthly criminals. Season 5 of the series consisted of 16 episodes, with

the first eight being released on August 21, 2020. The second half of Season 5 launched on May 28, 2021. After just three days on Netflix, Lucifer’s 83 combined episodes drew video streaming’s biggest weekly audience since Eddie Murphy comedy sequel Coming 2 America debuted on Amazon Prime Video in early March.

After airing on Fox for three years before being canceled, Netflix brought the Warner Bros. TV series back to life for a fourth season in 2018. It was announced in 2019 that Season 5 would be the last, but in

June 2020, Netflix announced that they renewed Lucifer for a sixth and final season.

Falling from the No. 1 spot and into second place was Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead, which captured 786 million viewing minutes, down 127 million viewing minutes over its premiere week. The Netflix zombie thriller launched on the streaming service on May 21 and is only the seventh movie to rank No. 1 on Nielsen’s weekly top SVOD programs list since the company started ranking content on the major U.S. SVOD services in September.

The film was first announced in 2008 as a sequel to 2004’s Dawn of the Dead, with Universal Studios and Warner Bros. producing. But Army of the Dead didn’t get off the ground until Netflix acquired the project

in January 2019. According to The Wall Street Journal the projected budget for Army of the Dead was $90 million. “The Snyders say the actual production cost was lower, and far cheaper than

the name-brand superhero movies he made for Warner Bros. with budgets north of $200 million.”

Even at $90 million or slightly below, capturing 786 million viewing minutes in its second week on Netflix seems to make the economic model questionable. But it might not be the Army of the Dead that’s not engaging to viewers. It could be blamed on viewers watching far more cable and network TV, than streaming services.

Last week via Nielsen’s new monthly infographic, The Gauge, the company reported that American viewers spent 64% of their time watching network and cable TV on their television sets in May 2021. Streaming services accounted for just 26% of video watching last month and Netflix accounted for just 6% of U.S. video consumption. Hulu trailed at 3%, Amazon at 2% and Disney Plus at 1%.
