A handful of new and returning scripted series along with a sprinkle of documentaries highlight an otherwise light week of non-holiday themed show premieres.

Netflix on Dec. 1 will bring back its sci-fi series Lost in Space for its third and final season, while Hulu on Dec. 3 will offer the second half of comedy Pen15's sophomore campaign. 

Debuting on Dec. 3 is Prime Video's new comedy series Harlem, created by Tracy Oliver and starring Megan Good.

The Christmas holiday period will feature several new and returning series, specials and movies, led by FX’s original film A Christmas Carol.

A Christmas Carol, an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic holiday story that stars Guy Pearce as Ebenezer Scrooge, premieres on FX Dec. 19.

Netflix will bring back its sci-fi drama series Lost in Space for a second season, the streaming service said Monday.

The series, a reboot of the CBS series of the same name that ran from 1965-1968 – will return for a sophomore campaign, although Netflix did not reveal a specific return date. The series drew 6.3 million viewers in its first three days after its April 13 launch, according to Nielsen.

Lost In Space stars Toby Stephens, Molly Parker, Maxwell Jenkins, Mina Sundwall, Taylor Russell, Ignacio Serricchio and Parker Posey. The series is produced by Legendary Television, with Zack Estrin, Kevin Burns, Jon Jashni, Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless all serving as executive producers. 

Following the success of ABC’s Rosanne revival, Netflix today launched its reboot of the 1960s sci-fi drama Lost In Space.

The series, like its 1960s predecessor, follows the exploits of the Robinsons, a family chosen to explore potentially habitable planets in space as Earth becomes rapidly inhabitable. When an unforeseen accident occurs during their travels, the family is catapulted of course toward an unknown planet.

While the premiere episode sets the stage for the Robinsons’ ultimate space adventure, it provides flashbacks to show how they arrived at this setting. It also reveals other survivors, including a mischievous and deceiving Doctor Smith (Parker Posey) who will play a major role in future episodes.

Netflix’s version of the series features high-quality special effects, high drama and a sleeker, more daunting-looking and technologically-advanced robot than the cheesy model in the original series.

But ultimately the strength and appeal of Lost In Space revolves around the exploits of the Robinson’s nuclear family – parents John (Toby Stephens) and Maureen (Molly Parker) Robinson and siblings Judy (Taylor Russell), Penny (Mina Sundwall) and Will (Maxwell Jenkins).

They certainly are not the perfect family – John and Maureen were headed for divorce prior to the trip, a subtle, sibling rivalry exists between the two daughters and Will has insecurity issues – but when push comes to shove the family shelves their issues and unites around each other. The series emphasizes family unity under the duress of a crisis.

Fans of the original Lost In Space will find tidbits within Netflix’s version that they can hold on to -- including the famous “Danger, Will Robinson” line uttered by the robot -- but younger viewers who’ve never heard of the series will find enough intrigue, action and drama to enjoy binge-viewing the 10-episode drama. 

Netflix will debut its reboot of the 1960’s sci-fi series Lost In Space on April 13, the streaming service said Wednesday. 

The reimagining of the original series – which aired on CBS from 1965-68 – is set 30 years into the future, with the Robinson family forced to survive in a dangerous alien environment after their ship veers off course from its original destination.

Netflix has already made the series available for viewing in space, with the streaming service providing NASA with access to the pilot episode for astronauts at the International Space Station to view, said company officials.

Netflix will reboot the 1960’s sci-fi show Lost In Space in a new series to debut in 2018, said officials from the OTT service.

Much like the original, the reimagined Lost In Space will revolve around the exploits of the Robinson family after being stranded light years from their intended destination, said Netflix.

Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless (Dracula Untold, Last Witch Hunter) will serve as writers and executive producers of the series, which will be produced by Legendary TV. Kevin Burns (The Curse of Oak Island, Ancient Aliens), Jon Jashni (Godzilla, Pacific Rim), Neil Marshall (Game of Thrones, The Descent) and Marc Helwig will also serve as executive producers.

“The original series so deftly captured both drama and comedy, and that made it very appealing to a broad audience,” said Cindy Holland, Netflix Vice President of Original Content in a statement. “The current creative team’s reimagining of the series for Netflix is sure to appeal to both fans who fondly remember the original and to create a new generation of enthusiasts around the world.”
