Netflix says it will develop another season of former A&E drama series Longmire.

The OTT service, which ordered season four of the modern Western series, starring Robert Taylor (pictured), after A&E canceled it in 2014 due to rising costs and an older-skewing audience, announced the fifth season pickup Friday via social media.

Netflix launched Longmire’s 10-episode fourth season on Sept. 10.

“We’ve never been one to back down from a fight. Longmire will return to Netflix for Season 5,” read a Facebook post for the series (currently displaying 24,000-plus likes).

Netflix on Friday released a first look video at its upcoming drama series Longmire, which it will debut Sept. 10.

The western-themed series, which was cancelled by A&E in 2014 after three seasons, will launch the series’ fourth season with 10 episodes, according to the network.

The 10-episode fourth season, which picks up moments after the third season finale, stars Robert Taylor, along with Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica, Riddick), Lou Diamond Phillips (Southland, La Bamba), Bailey Chase (Damages), Cassidy Freeman (Smallville) and Adam Bartley (Justified). Gerald McRaney (House of Cards) and Ally Walker (Sons of Anarchy) guest star in the upcoming season, according to Nerflix.

Netflix has set a Sept. 10 date for a new season of former A&E drama series Longmire, the streaming-video service said during its Television Critics Association presentation Tuesday.

The Western-themed cop drama, which was canceled by A&E in 2014, will debut its fourth season with 10 episodes, said network officials.

Netflix also said it will debut an original documentary based on the life of veteran Rolling Stones member Keith Richards. The doc, Keith Richards: Under The Influence, produced by Morgan Neville (20 Feet From Stardom) will debut Set. 18, according to the network.

Netflix also said it has renewed its animated series BoJack Horseman for a third season and has set a Nov. 6 date for the new Aziz Ansari comedy series, Master of None.

Pasadena, Calif. -- Netflix has no intentions of releasing viewing statistics for its original shows, which do not reflect the success or failure of its original programming, according to the OTT service’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos.

Sarandos, speaking at Netflix’s Television Critics Association press tour presentation here Wednesday morning, said that unlike cable and broadcast networks, Netflix has no business reasons to be measured or release audience numbers. The streaming service doesn’t have to rely on ratings to generate advertising or secure carriage deals with cable distributors, so Sarandos said there’s no need to provide audience information to justify its success.

He added that the television industry’s heavy emphasis on ratings has hurt the overall creative process.

“For us, primetime viewing is no more valuable than 3 a.m. viewing – we want our subscribers to watch on their time table,” he said. “While other network track live +3 or live +7, it has no impact on our business whatsoever. We’re going to stay away from it as long as we can.”

On Netflix’s decision not to stream The Interview: Sarandos would not directly comment on Netflix’s decision not to distribute Sony’s controversial movie The Interview, but noted that the movie’s digital performance – Sony has reported that the movie has drawn $31 million in digital sales  – bodes well for the future of digitally distributed movie programming.

“It’s been a great  example of what can happen with a big budget movie if you give people distribution choices,” Sarandos said. “You can create a lot of revenue.”

On the resurrection of canceled shows: Sarandos said the company will look at shows “opportunistically” adding that its decision to bring back A&E’s recently cancelled drama Longmire was based on adding new viewers to Netflix. Later this year, Netflix will stream the fourth season of the western drama, which A&E cancelled late last year after three seasons. 

“The show had a very loyal audience base … it will work great on Netflix,” he said.

Netflix has ordered a fourth season of the western-themed drama series Longmire, three months after A&E cancelled the show.

The series, based on novels by Craig Johnson about a Wyoming sheriff whose territory abuts a Native American reservation, has received a 10-episode order from Netflix and will air on the OTT service in 2015.

A&E Network cancelled the Warner Horizon Television-produced series this past August despite it being the most watched series for the network. Season three of the series this past summer averaged 3.5 million viewers in live plus same day viewing. The series ended on a cliffhanger, and Netflix officials said the series will pick up moments after the season three finale.

“When Warner Horizon Television came to us with the idea for a new season of Longmire, we were intrigued because the series is so unique, and consistently great,” said Cindy Holland, Vice President of Original Content at Netflix in a statement. “We are thrilled to help continue Walt Longmire’s story for his large and passionate following.”

In a joint statement, the Longmire executive producers said: “We’re excited and honored to have the opportunity to bring this show that we love so much, and all its devoted fans, to Netflix.”

A few previews of shows I recommend early on this week:

Longmire, A&E, series 3 premiere, Monday, June 2, at 10 p.m. This show does well with season premieres – the season 2 opener, in which Sheriff Walt Longmire (Robert Taylor) stalked an escaped killer on foot up a mountainside in the snow, was especially memorable. Season 3’s opener starts off quiet, for a few seconds, then revs up in a hurry. Walt displays MacGyver-like skill trying to help wounded deputy Branch Connally, who was last seen bleeding on a Wyoming hillside, on the cellphone calling Walt for help. Taylor’s strong, silent-type acting and the intersection of white Western and Indian cultures are the highlights of this series, along with the landscapes and an ace cast that also includes Katee Sackhoff (Deputy Vic Moretti), Lou Diamond Phillips (Henry Standing Bear) and Cassidy Freeman. Freeman, who plays Longmire’s daughter Cady, looks to have a (welcome) bigger role this season as she and Walt defend Henry against charges he killed the man who murdered Walt’s wife, way back before season 1 began. This episode I'd characterize as a good Walt and Branch one, a nice change from their antagonism of seasons past. And maybe even a breakthrough between Walt and his reservation counterpart, Officer Mathias (Zach McClarnon). Let's face it, with Henry locked up, Walt's going to need all the help he can get.

Cry Wolfe, Investigation Discovery, series premiere, Tuesday, June 3, at 10 p.m., with back to back episodes. This engaging new show stars Boston-accented Los Angeles P.I. Brian Wolfe and his investigative assistant, Janine McCarthy (pronounced “McCaahthy”), as they act out dramatized versions of field work from Wolfe’s case files. I stress dramatized and act out because, at least in the review disk, it wasn’t clear to me that the cameras weren’t following Wolfe around during the actual course of his business, which in the first two episodes are investigating suspected cheating spouses. Wolfe comes across as a nice guy, uncynical and sincere when he says things like “hopefully, Todd’s not cheating.” Viewers should stay open to all possible outcomes, too.

Fargo, FX, episode 8, Tuesday, June 3, at 10 p.m. If there’s a better new TV drama this season, I haven’t seen it. It has the spirit of the Coen brothers’ movie and almost, almost makes you believe the claim that it’s a true story, except it’s too funny, sad and sometimes shocking to be true. The acting is terrific all around, especially Allison Tolman as Deputy Molly Solverson (roughly the Frances McDormand role in the movie) and Martin Freeman as Lester Nygaard (roughly the William H. Macy character) but all down the line, including two guests, Key and Peele’s Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele as FBI agents Bill Budge and Webb Pepper. From each installment's first minute, you know you’re watching a new movie, and this episode is probably the most satisfying one yet. Go ahead, start now if you haven't already.
