Netflix drops a new adult animated special based on the music of Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi with the September 30 premiere of Entergalactic.

The special, produced by Mescudi and Kenya Barris (Black-ish), fuses animation with songs from Kid Cudi’s upcoming album of the same name, said the streaming service. Entergalactic follows the exploits of a young man who attempts to balance success and love when moves into his dream Manhattan apartment and falls for his next-door neighbor, Netflix said.

Entergalactic’s cast features the voices of Mescudi, Jessica Williams, Vanessa Hudgens, Macaulay Culkin, Teyana Taylor, Ty Dolla $ign, Keith David and Timothée Chalamet. ■

BET Studios has teamed with the Klutch Sports Group to develop its first unscripted series that will follow the lives of several college basketball prospects.

The five-part series, Klutch Academy, will debut on BET Nov. 23 and will follow the Klutch Sports Group as they prepare six college basketball prospects for pro careers. Each one-hour episode will candidly reveal what players and agents experience in the process leading up to the NBA Draft.

The series marks the first original unscripted series for BET Studios, which looks to create premium TV series and films while offering equity ownership for Black content creators. 

Klutch Academy is executive produced by Rich Paul, Fara Leff, Mike Tollin, Jon Weinbach, Kenya Barris, Tiffany Lea Williams, and Mike Gleaton.

“With Kenya Barris, Rich Paul, Mike Tollin and Jon Weinbach all on board for Klutch Academy, we couldn’t have hoped for a better inaugural project for BET Studios,” Aisha Summers Burke, EVP and General Manager of BET Studios said in a statement. “The BET Studios venture is all about giving creators an opportunity to tell stories that have yet to be told, and Klutch Sports has a remarkable background and history that we know will resonate with our audiences, which is why we’re so glad the series found its home right here on BET.”

BET will look to create premium television series and films as part of BET Studios, a new studio production company offering equity ownership for Black content creators, the network said Wednesday.

The studio venture will be headed by former Warner Bros. Television executive Aisha Summers-Burke, who will report to BET president Scott Mills and will be responsible for working collaboratively with the studio’s creative partners and key internal constituencies. Principal partners in the venture include content producers Kenya Barris, Rashida Jones and Aaron Rahsaan Thomas.  

BET Studios will look to develop content for BET and sister streaming service BET Plus as well as other ViacomCBS-owned networks including Paramount Plus, Showtime, CBS and Nickelodeon, according to the company. The service will also select third-party platforms that seek content from rising Black creatives. 

“The demand for premium content from Black creators has accelerated dramatically as a result of both the rapidly changing media and social landscapes,” Mills said in a statement. “BET, with our 40-year legacy of celebrating Black culture and the full power of the ViacomCBS ecosystem, is uniquely positioned to service this demand. As a company with its origin in Black entrepreneurship, we are incredibly excited to create the first major studio to provide Black creators with ownership, creative freedom and the unparalleled partnership and support of BET. Burke, who most recently served as VP of scripted television for the cable and streaming division of Warner Horizon before it merged with Warner Bros. TV in 2020, said that the venture will continue to build on BET's legacy of offering quality programming to the Black community.

Netflix Thursday made official its exclusive production deal with black-ish creator Kenya Barris.

As part of the multi-year deal, Barris will produce new series exclusively for the streaming service through his production company Khalabo Ink Society, said company officials.

Along with creating black-ish and its Freeform spinoff series Grown-ish, Barris also wrote for the hit theatrical movie Girls Trip.

Barris added: “When my agents reached out to me about this little garage start-up called Netflix, I wasn’t sure what to think. But after I talked to Ted and Cindy, I started to believe that maybe this mom-and-pop shop with only 130 million subscribers might just be something... so I decided to take a swing... a leap of faith if you will, and take a chance with the new kids on the block.”
