On Sept. 8, Kim Kardashian West took to Instagram to announce that E!’s longtime hit Keeping Up With the Kardashians would come to a close, airing a final season in 2021. In the 13 years the show has been on the air, it’s propelled the Kardashian family to global fame and enabled an empire spanning everything from clothing and cosmetics lines to apps — not to mention spinoffs.

With KUWTK coming to an end and the penultimate season just kicking off, we dived into the show’s viewership and advertising trends using insights from Inscape, the TV data company with insights from a panel of more than 16 million active, opted-in smart TVs, and always-on TV ad measurement and attribution company iSpot.

Simply put, KUWTK is a powerhouse for E! — and the network obviously knows it, as it runs almost daily marathons. According to iSpot, the series is a primary driver of TV ad impressions for the network, with new and rerun episodes racking up 5 billion impressions so far this year. During the season 18 window (March 26 through April 30), the show delivered 1.7 billion TV ad impressions across new episodes and reruns — nearly four times as many impressions as there were during just new episodes in that timeframe (424.2 million).

E! kept its airing strategy going for the season 19 premiere on Sept. 17, with an almost all-day marathon leading up to the new episode. There were 106.3 million TV ad impressions for the show that day, with 29.9 million occurring during the premiere, representing a 50% decrease from the season 18 premiere and a 26.13% decrease from the season 17 premiere last September. That said, viewers stayed glued to the show and tuned into the commercials during the premiere, with spots performing 7% above the norm for attention, according to iSpot data.

Looking at Inscape’s minute-by-minute viewership data, you can see how tune-in grew throughout the day, spiking at the end of the premiere.

According to Inscape’s season crossover data, 49% of the viewers of season 18 tuned into the season 19 premiere, and 50% of the premiere viewers had watched at least some of season 18.

Notably, many of those fans are from the West Coast — especially California. Per Inscape, the top five local area markets for KUWTK are Bakersfield, California; Palm Springs, California; Corpus Christi, Texas; Los Angeles, California; and Fresno-Visalia, California.

It’s worth noting that the top brands advertising during KUWTK shifted from season 18, according to iSpot’s tracking. During that season, Quibi, Kia, DreamWorks Animation, Ziploc and Sprint were the most-seen brands during new episodes, while for the season 19 premiere, top brands included H&M, TRESemme, LG Appliances, T-Mobile and Cottonelle.

Although it’s likely that E! will continue to air reruns after KUWTK wraps up next year, it’s interesting to take a look at what else the show’s fans are watching on TV. Per Inscape’s viewership crossover data, the list is entirely reality TV shows:

The Kardashian family announced that after 14 years, Keeping Up with the Kardashians will be ending, with its final season airing in early 2021.

The show has been a major attraction for NBCUniversal’s E! Network.

“While it has been an absolute privilege and we will miss them wholeheartedly, we respect the family’s decision to live their lives without our cameras,” the network said in a statement. “It is not our final goodbye yet, we are excited to have the new season of Keeping Up with the Kardashians launching on Sept. 17 with the final season airing in 2021. We thank the entire extended family and our production partners, Bunim Murray and Ryan Seacrest Productions for embarking on this global phenomenon together.”

The family posted a message to fans on its Instagram page.

“It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to Keeping Up with the Kardashians. After what will be 14 years, 20 seasons, hundreds of episodes and several spin-off shows, we’ve decided as a family to end this very special journey. We are beyond grateful to all of you who’ve watched us for all of these years – through the good times, the bad times, the happiness, the tears, and the many relationships and children. We’ll forever cherish the wonderful memories and countless people we’ve met along the way,” the post said.

“Thank you to the thousands of individuals and businesses that have been a part of this experience and most importantly, a very special thank you to Ryan Seacrest for believing in us, E! for being our partner, and our production team at Bunim/Murray who’ve spent countless hours filming our lives,” the post said.

The venerable series, which follows the lives of the Kardashian clan — matriarch Kris Kardashian and ex-husband Bruce Jenner (who transitioned to Caitlyn Jenner in 2015), along with adult kids Kourtney, Kim, Khloe, Rob, Kendall and Kylie — has put its stamp on the reality genre with a no-holds-barred look into the fascinating and often flawed personalities that have helped to build the family’s multibillion-dollar entertainment empire.

E! senior vice president of programming and development Damla Dogan, who has been involved with Keeping Up With the Kardashians since its October 2007 launch, recently spoke to Multichannel News programming editor R. Thomas Umstead about the show’s 10-year anniversary, its 11 spinoff series, its influence on the cable reality-series genre and what audiences should expect from the series’ 14th season, which premieres Oct. 1. An edited version of the interview follows.

MCN:A decade ago, when you were in negotiations with the Kardashian family to create a new reality series, did you ever think that you’d be talking about it today with such reverence given its success and longevity?
Damla Dogan: You want to think that for every show of course, but it happens so rarely that you really can’t think that’s going to happen. I will say that what we saw that was most intriguing is something that is constant and doesn’t change, and that’s the appeal of family. When you’re with your family you can do anything and you have unconditional love for them, and in some ways that’s what we all want right? That is a constant and not a trend. Because of that, I did suspect there could be longevity, but I had no idea that we would be here 10 years later.

MCN:What was it about the then mostly unknown Kardashian family that made you believe that their lives would draw audiences to E!?
DD: It’s a really great question and I don’t know that I have the answer. I can tell you I think a lot of it does come back to that family dynamic — no matter what is going on in their lives or the things that they’re surrounded by, everybody can relate to that family dynamic. I think it’s the appeal of that real cross-section of an aspirational lifestyle and the heart and reliability of family. You may not know what it’s like to live that lifestyle, but you know what it’s like to fight and make up with your sister. I also think that they really do share everything that happens to them, and you really feel that when you’re watching the show.

MCN:Was there any episode or was there something in a particular episode that made you think that this show could break out into something big?
DD: I think we were toward the end of our run on the first season where we started to really see things climb. I remember the day I first saw a tabloid story about the show that reflected the convergence of the show into pop-culture status. I remember the story, which talked about a meteoric rise in ratings for this show, and at the time I was like, ‘I guess we’ll be doing season two very quickly.’

MCN:Have the numerous spinoffs overshadowed the original series?
DD: I don’t think so. They’ve all really worked in concert with Keeping Up. The first spinoff that we did was Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami, and that really was born out of a very organic situation that was happening in their lives. They were two single sisters who were launching the Miami location for their Dash store. The situation just really lent itself to very focused storytelling — we felt like it could live a little bit apart and separate from Keeping Up because of the situation, so that’s sort of where that started. But Keeping Up is where the family all come back together no matter what is happening, and I don’t think there is ever any overshadowing that.

MCN:Is there a concern that they all may not come back at some point?
DD: Eventually one day that will probably be true, but I don’t know when that day is.

MCN:How much did social media play in the success of the series?
DD: It has been pivotal. I think they were incredibly smart about figuring out social media and staying ahead of social media. They were some of the first celebrities that really understood how to connect with their fans directly through social media, and I think that played a huge component into the success of the show.

MCN:Also, how much did the controversies surrounding the Kardashian family play in the overall success and appeal of the series?
DD: Certainly the things that have happened to them throughout the years are things nobody could have predicted. You can’t write it — it’s the old saying, the truth is stranger than fiction, and some really big events have happened to them. I think what has kept the show so relevant to their fans is that they really did share what it was like for them to go through those things and to give that inside peek as to what that moment in time was like for them.

MCN:From E!’s perspective, did you ever have any uncertainties about running a particular event or storyline because you thought it was too controversial?
DD: I can say with any show that’s been on the air 10 years there are moments of uncertainty where you don’t know what happens next. But one of the things that I like best about working on this show is that in those moments, we really do work with the family to figure out what to do next. I don’t think we would ever make a decision on our own as a network without really talking it through with the family. I hope that that authenticity comes across.

MCN:Ratings forKeeping Up With the Kardashianshave fluctuated over the years. Is E! still satisfied with how the series is performing?
DD: Yes, I can say that we are. We have found our audience, and they have found us.

MCN:Do you see an endpoint forKeeping Up With the Kardashians?
DD: I do think it can continue on. As long as the audience wants to see the stories, and as long as the family wants to share their stories, they will continue.

MCN:What should viewers expect to see in season 14?
DD: From what I’ve seen, there is obviously a real return to the family — Keeping Up is where the family comes together. I think you’re going to see a lot of fun moments, as well with a lot of laughter, but there are also some really emotional, poignant moments as well. Overall, I think it’s going to really give viewers a fun ride ... there’s a lot to celebrate.

MCN:Over the years what was what do you feel was the most poignant moment for you on the show?
DD: There have been many. We’ve seen a lot of the women in the cast struggle with their relationships. I think that certainly the aftermath of Kim’s robbery was a very, very emotional subject and time. There have been a lot of moments like that, where you did not have any way to predict something like this was going to happen, but it did and you’ve seen them work through it.

MCN:How about the most surprising or eye-opening moment for you on the show?
DD: There was a really funny moment early on in the series that people always talk about when Kourtney and Khloe waxed each other. It was one of those moments that really just made you laugh.

MCN:HasKeeping Up With the Kardashianshad a positive or negative affect on the reality genre?
DD: I think that it has had a positive effect on the genre. When reality first started, everybody was saying, ‘It’s not going to last — it’s going to stick around for one season until scripted comes back and burn out really quickly.’ Keeping Up is one of the shows you can point to that proved if you have a good story to tell, viewers will listen. [The genre] is not going anywhere.

In many cases, these off shoots perform as well or better than their parent shows in the ratings.

More than one-third of cable’s top 30 reality shows for the period of June 1, 2015, to May 31, 2016, were reality franchises and their respective extension shows, according to Nielsen. Such extensions, which can potentially cannibalize viewers from their parent series, were once considered a risky play for networks. Now, they are sought-after content with built-in brand recognition and an audience base that can be lured in without a great deal of marketing effort.

“Spinoffs are so big these days because it’s so hard to launch new series today … there’s so much content to choose from and it’s so hard to reach people with new ideas and a new series,” Shari Levine, executive vice president of production for Bravo, said. “When you are doing a spinoff you’re delivering a show to a ready-made viewer that’s somewhat susceptible. You don’t have to explain the concept to them. Half of the marketing is done for you.”

Related:'Deadliest Catch’ Hooks a Spinoff [subscription required]

For some cable franchises just one or two spinoff shows aren’t enough to satisfy the appetite of loyal viewers. Bravo’s Real Housewives franchise — which follows the lives of affluent housewives from various parts of the country — has branded a whopping nine separate series over the past decade.

GETTING HARDER TO ‘KEEP UP’

E! later this year will launch its limited reality series Rob & Chyna, focusing on the lives of celebrity couple Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna, another spinoff from the long-running series Keeping Up With the Kardashians.

VH1’s Love & Hip Hop, which chronicles the lives and relationships of hip hop and R&B musicians, has spawned three spinoff series: Love & Hip Hop: New York, Love & Hip Hop Atlanta and Love & Hip Hop Hollywood.

And the Atlanta version has spun off two series of its own, K Michelle: My Life and Stevie J & Joseline: Go Hollywood. And despite all the iterations from the original franchise, it seems viewers are singing the praises of virtually all of these series. Current seasons of Love & Hip Hop, Love & Hip Hop Atlanta and Love & Hip Hop Hollywood all finished among the top 15 most-watched reality series over the past year, according to Nielsen. The sixth season of parent franchise Love & Hip Hop averaged 3.3 million viewers (on a live-plus-7-day basis), topped only by the fourth season of Love & Hip Hop Atlanta, which drew 3.6 million viewers.

Brand recognition is paramount when trying to break through in crowded television marketplace, E! and Esquire Network president Adam Stotsky said. Once a brand is established with viewers, he said, the ability to extend it over a multitude of programs gives networks a leg up on the competition.

E!’s Kardashians empire remains strong and fertile, according to Stotsky. Flagship Keeping Up With the Kardashians is still among the most-watched shows on cable, averaging 2.9 million viewers over the past year, besting all of its franchise extensions, which include I Am Cait, Kim and Khloe Take the Hamptons and Dash Dolls, as well as new series Revenge Body With Khloe Kardashian, to launch later this year.

“Given that competitive landscape and the marketing challenges faced in launching new franchises and brands from scratch, working off an existing base where viewers know who these characters are and the world they live in is like makes for an easier entry point for consumers, and alleviates some marketing pressure for the networks,” Stotsky said.

Still, a franchise extension isn’t a slam dunk. Producers must still find a viable new setting, location or character around which to build a spinoff series.

“You have to listen to your audience because they vote with their thumbs on the remote controls everyday,” Stotsky added. “It’s a balancing act — on the one hand, the opportunity to extend versus the risk of cannibalization and oversaturation, and that’s something we monitor.”

Discovery Channel decided to bring back contestants from its popular survival-themed series Naked and Afraid, challenging them to endure a much longer and tougher survival challenge in the buff via sophomore spinoff series Naked and Afraid XL, Denise Contis, executive vice president of development and production for Discovery, said. The result was another hit series for the network, with Naked and Afraid XL garnering 3.8 million viewers during its freshman run, beating out its predecessor’s 2.7 million viewers.

“The spinoff is authentically motivated by the contestants themselves, who are looking to push themselves even further,” Joe Boyle, executive producer of both series, said. “Instead of just that process of learning to work with one other human being, they’re learning to survive and work with a number of other human beings and the ramifications of that. It gives us a much larger playing field in terms of character development.”

EXTENSIONS OF ANOTHER KIND

Other networks are doing more unconventional franchise extensions. AMC, which this July will debut the Stephen David-produced Making of the Mob: Chicago — a spinoff of last year’s Making of the Mob: New York — also looked to basic cable’s top-rated scripted series, zombie thriller The Walking Dead, to beget Talking Dead, the reality genre’s most-watched series over the past year. The live recap talk show, hosted by Chris Hardwick, drew 6.3 million viewers during the period, according to Nielsen.

TV One is doing the complete opposite of AMC: It’s spinning off an episode of Unsung, its unscripted docuseries on popular R&B artists, into an original telefilm. An Unsung episode on the 1990s R&B singer Miki Howard served as the basis for Love Under New Management: The Miki Howard Story. Its June 12 debut drew more than 2 million viewers across multiple viewings, setting a network ratings record for an original film, said D’Angela Proctor, head of original programming and production for the African-American-targeted TV One.

As long as networks are serving viewers with unique content that fits within the confines of a particular franchise, there’s no such thing as too many spinoff s, Bravo’s Levine said. Along with the Housewives franchise, Bravo has already built multiple shows around such franchises as Million Dollar Listing, Married to Medicine and Below Deck.

“As long as it’s working, there isn’t a limit, but I don’t think you know until you actually do it,” she said.

In order to get his attention, first-time producers have to show that they can help turn a project into reality.

That includes realizing that once an idea is accepted, the producer will usually give up control of the project, said Half Yard Productions co-owner and executive producer Abby Greensfelder. Half Yard’s shows range from Say Yes to the Dress for TLC to Hillbilly Handfishin’ (pictured) for Animal Planet.

“In order to get to the finish line, you have to relinquish control,” Greensfelder said. “That’s the price of entry.”

Aside from having a unique idea – either access to a character or a world that is unique to the television community, Greensfelder said first-time producers with unrealistic views need not apply.

“We’re taking on a risk,” Greensfelder said, adding that if a first-time independent doesn’t see the value she or her colleagues bring to the table “We will often walk away.”

While getting a foot in the door of a producer like Bunim/Murray or Half Yard isn’t easy, it’s even harder to go direct to the networks. National Geographic Channel U.S. president of original programming & production Tim Pastore said that he won’t even look at a project unless it comes to him through a producer he knows with a proven track record.

That also includes agents. While landing an agent also will require an introduction from someone with an industry track record too, WME Entertainment partner Jason Hodes said that once an agent takes on a project, they can pitch it to multiple sources. Pastore agreed, adding that even if he likes a project, once he spends any money on it – even a small amount of a so-called sizzle reel (a 3-5 minute video that outlines the project) – it can’t be shopped to anyone else.

“If you come straight to me and I invest in your sizzle reel, you can’t bring it out,” Pastore said. “I’m going to start retaining rights.”

An agent, however, can shop the project to multiple networks, digital platforms and any other content distributor that would possibly be interested in the project.

Pastore recommended that would-be producers should search network web sites and comb show credits for production companies that produce shows that mesh with the genre they are developing to increase their chances for success.

“Pick the shows that are more in line with your programming ideas and pitch them,” Pastore said. “Go to Phil [Segal] if you have a fishing show more than a soap opera.”

Those demo gains were about 10% above what the season-opening episode delivered, and was the most watched original episode in more than a year. It was the most-watched original episode in those two demos since the season-eight premiere in June 2013, E! said.

The episodes were about the family's events leading up to the wedding of Kim Kardashian.

E! also said the series #RichKids of Beverly Hills drew 1.9 million total unique viewers across two premieres over the holiday weekend, and that Sunday’s original was the most-watched episode for the series to date among adults ages 18-49 (863,000) and ages 18-34 (699,000).
