In the more than 3,100 days since he departed Comedy Central's The Daily Show, Jon Stewart seemed to take his seriousness and his gravitas to another level, spearheading grinding policy initiatives such as the grueling fight to get Congress to extend special benefits to military veterans harmed by burn pits.

The Daily Show certainly was never entirely whimsical, but the comedian's follow-up effort in the video entertainment business, Apple TV Plus’s The Problem With Jon Stewart landed pretty far from a half-hour basic cable show that helped so-called “coastal elite” viewers unwind.

So when Stewart, 61, abruptly announced in January — eight months before a pivotal election — that he was returning to oversee the rebranded TDS, and would host it once a week on Monday nights, it was safe to assume that he wasn't merely making a retrograde career move to wind down the clock.

“I’ve learned one thing over these nine years,” he told his audience on Monday. “I was glib at best and probably dismissive at worst about this. But the work of making this world resemble one you’d like to live in is a lunch pail job, day in and day out.”

Evidenced by his first night back as host on Monday, Stewart is done even pretending about the “comedy” part of the job. He's going back to work, using a platform that fits him better than anyone else to achieve some real policy and political goals.

But this time, his fervor and urgency seem far more intense than his most influential and halcyon Daily Show moments … say, 21 years ago, in the run-up to the ill-fated invasion of Iraq.

And the left, which has long been Stewart's base, might not be so in love with the early game plan, at least not initially.

If you're wondering how Jon Stewart's bullshit bothsidesist return went over...The antisemite racist conspiracy nuts LOVED it pic.twitter.com/OrFwWBv4BkFebruary 13, 2024

Indeed, it doesn't appear, at least on first glance, that the erstwhile Daily Show under Stewart's glorious return, will merely serve as a platform for the left-leaning pundit to prop up Joe Biden’s sagging poll numbers against Donald Trump in swing states.

But don't confuse the strategy with "bothsidesism" -- Stewart, not so subtly, wants the Dems to make a deal before the trade deadline.

“One thing we know for certain is this: we have two candidates who are chronologically outside the norm for anyone who has run for the presidency of this country in the history of this country,” Stewart said. “They’re the oldest people ever to run for president, breaking by only four years the record that they set the last time they ran.”

Surface-level analysis suggests Stewart has reverted to safe “both-sides” cover. But let's be real. His audience never has been or ever will be remotely MAGA … or even independent voters in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, for that matter. On Monday, five days following a disconcerting DOJ report about Biden's mental competency, and weeks into primary season, Stewart was speaking to just one side.

His message: Even if Biden does squeeze by, do you really want to enable an 86-year-old to perform the most important job in the known universe?

“Joe Biden isn’t Donald Trump,” Stewart said. “He hasn’t been indicted as many times. He hasn’t had as many fraudulent businesses. He’s never been convicted in a civil trial of sexual assault, or been ordered to pay for defamation, or had his charities disbanded, or stiffed a shit-ton of blue-collar tradesmen he hired. Should we even get to the grabbed-a-pussy stuff? Probably not.

“But the stakes of this election don’t make Donald Trump’s opponent less subject to scrutiny,” he added. “It actually makes him more subject to scrutiny … November 5 is nothing to sneeze at, but neither is November 6 or 7. If your guy loses, bad things might happen, but the country is not over. But if your guy wins, the country is in no way saved.”

The current affairs show “takes a deep dive into some of the most enduring, deeply-entrenched issues of our time,” said Apple TV Plus. “The Problem With Jon Stewart is a multiple-season, single-issue series with Stewart exploring complex topics through the differing perspectives of stakeholders, experts and individuals confronting these challenges.”

Stewart executive produces along with Richard Plepler, Brinda Adhikari and James Dixon. Episodes run 40 to 60 minutes.

Stewart told The New York Times the show is more about amplification than advocacy.

“That seems like a worthwhile use of the privilege of television,” he said. “I’ve always viewed it as a uniquely, oddly arrogant privilege. Like all comics, who walk into a club, where all the seats are facing one way and there’s one seat in front of everyone, and you think to yourself, I’ll take that one — I’ve got some thoughts on airplanes that I’d like these other people to hear. Now you feel like, well, if you’ve earned some capital in all of this, why not spend it on people better than you, who are doing remarkable things? You can help frame their good work.”

A companion podcast will extend the conversation from each episode of The Problem With Jon Stewart.

Stewart hosted The Daily Show on Comedy Central until he departed in 2015.

Almost two years ago, Stewart and HBO said the digital shorts would not happen, citing technical issues.

In summer 2017, HBO said Stewart would do a couple of standup specials. A spokesperson said those are still in the works.

Stewart hosted autism benefit Night of Too Many Stars on HBO in November 2017. A longtime champion of Sept. 11 first responders, he appeared on Fox News Channel in February to discuss the Never Forget the Heroes Act. He will direct a political satire film called Irresistible.

RELATED STORY: The Night Shift

Stewart still has a hand in late night. He’s an executive producer on CBS’s The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Samantha Bee, host of Full Frontal on TBS, was a Daily Show correspondent under Stewart, as was Wyatt Cenac of HBO’s Wyatt Cenac’s Problem Areas. “He’s got his fingerprints on quite a lot right now,” Bloxham said.

Amanda Lotz, media scholar and professor at Queensland University of Technology (Australia), feels Stewart “passed a torch” to other hosts, many of them Daily Show alums. “Not only to Trevor Noah,” she said, “but the formats of John Oliver’s and Hasan Minhaj’s shows [Last Week Tonight, Patriot Act] in many ways add more depth to the informational side of the info-comedy equation.”

New Comedy Central president Kent Alterman, who earlier this month took over for departing network head Michele Ganeless, inherits a network that has struggled of late from a ratings perspective but is being looked upon by Viacom CEO Philipe Duaman to help spur the company’s financial fortunes.

Alterman recently spoke to Multichannel News programming editor R. Thomas Umstead to discuss the network’s brand, its appeal to millennials and the struggles of its late-night franchises The Daily Show With Trevor Noah and The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore.

Related:MCN Original Video: Kent Alterman discusses the evolution of "The Daily Show" under Trevor Noah

MCN: How would you define the Comedy Central brand?

Kent Alterman: I’ll start by how our audience defines it, which is that it’s the No. 1 brand in comedy across all platforms. For me, what unifies all of our talent and content that we put out there is that they bring a very distinct point of view and voice to what they do that generally shares some degree of relevance, intelligence and an ability to reflect the world back at our audience in a way that gives them a break from the world.

MCN: You’re coming in at a time when the network’s ratings have been declining for some time. How do you view the network’s ratings performances and what can be done to curtail viewership declines?

KA: The entire industry is facing the same challenges, especially in reaching our young millennial audience. Viewing behaviors are changing, so we’re pursuing dual tracks.

We’re tending to the linear ratings – our audience consumes original content, and reruns don’t mean so much anymore, so we’re looking at ways to have more and better content.

We’re also making sure that we not only make our content available on all platforms, but also that we’re creating original content that is conceived and executed with these different platforms in mind so that it feels more organic. We were the only entertainment channel to be part of Snapchat Discover and we’ve been doubling down on how much original content we’ve been creating for that platform. It also affords us a development pipeline in the sense of making more bets with emerging talent and having more ways to working with talent in general on different platforms so that we can open up the aperture of our talent development.

MCN: Having said that, what would you consider to be the network’s core shows?

KA: The good news for us is that we’ve been having this great run of shows like South Park, Tosh 2.0 and The Daily Show, which has been an institution. We don’t have Jon [Stewart] but we’re bullish on Trevor. The Daily Show under Trevor Noah is the No. 1 late night show with male millennials and second overall after [The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy] Fallon. It’s been experiencing several months of repeated growth, so all the signs are pointing the right way, and creatively Trevor is taking the ball and running with it – we’re really pleased with his evolution.

There are other shows that are incredibly popular including Broad City, Inside Amy Schumer, Drunk History, Another Period,Nikki Glazer and so on. Ultimately what we feel gratified by is that in the last several years we’ve had a great run in introducing new talent, and they are all resonating with our audience.

MCN: You mentioned The Daily Show, and obviously a lot has been written about the show’s declining ratings as well as those of The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore since Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert left the respective shows. From your perspective, how have those shows performed with their new hosts and what if anything can be done to get ratings for the shows back to prior levels?

KA: I think you have to look at a few things. It’s not like we replaced those shows at a time when there was stability in the marketplace of our business. It coincided with a period of incredible disruption in our business, and so its almost an unfair comparison; its not apples to apples. Even if you look at our late shows now and you include all the platforms where people are watching complete episodes – whether its on our website or our app or Hulu – the numbers are really significant, so it’s a tough comparison. What we care about the most is our fans and how [the shows] are resonating with our fans, and we try to keep our eye on that ball.

MCN: What are the biggest challenges the network is facing today?

KA: We’re living in a very tumultuous, disruptive time in our industry, and so I think we’re all facing the same challenges. No one knows how it's all going to settle out, and for the most part we try to keep our eye on what’s most important, which is our talent and our content. No matter what changes come in our industry, the thing that will never change is the importance of having content that resonates for our audience.

MCN: You mentioned programming for multiple platforms. How much does the digital platform influence the content development and distribution decisions you have to make?

KA: We’re trying to be very holistic about development and not so much separate linear with multiplatform distribution, but just continue to serve all masters simultaneously. We don’t just produce our content and then chop it up and distribute it on other platforms. We’re really expanding our aperture to work with different people and develop content that is targeted to different platforms because, ultimately, we are led more than anything else by our audience, and our audience is consuming content in different ways on different platforms, so we want to be able to meet them where they are.

HBO also gets a first-look option for other film and TV projects from Stewart in his post-Daily Show career. His first endeavor will see him putting a twist on current events. He is working with a cloud graphics company, OTOY Inc., to develop "new technology that will allow him to produce timely short-form digital content, which will be refreshed on HBO NOW multiple times throughout the day," HBO said in a release.

“Jon Stewart led a revolution that changed the face of TV comedy on the Daily Show,” HBO Programming president Phil Lombardo said in a release. “He graced our network nearly 20 years ago, so we’re thrilled to welcome back his immense talents in this next chapter of his career.”

Added Stewart in the release: “I’m so excited to be working with Richard [Plepler], Michael and the entire HBO family. Appearing on television 22 minutes a night clearly broke me. I’m pretty sure I can produce a few minutes of content every now and again.”

Stewart’s previous HBO credits include the standup special Jon Stewart: Unleavened, hosting the special George Carlin: 40 Years of Comedy, Mr. Show with Bob and David and a recurring role on The Larry Sanders Show, HBO noted. He was host of The Daily Show With Jon Stewart on Comedy Central for 16 years.

Trevor is a talented comedian with a bright future at Comedy Central.”

For more of this story, visit broadcastingcable.com.

He has an insightful and unique point of view, and most importantly, is wickedly funny,” said Comedy Central president Michele Ganeless. “For the next host of The Daily Show, we set out to find a fresh voice who can speak to our audience with a keen take on the events of the day, and we found that in Trevor. He has a huge international following and is poised to explode here in America, and we are thrilled to have him join Comedy Central.”

Noah, 31, has only made three appearances on the show, having first debuted in December. Noah made his U.S. television debut in 2012 on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno and also appeared on CBS's Late ShowWith David Letterman. Noah has hosted numerous television shows including his own late night talk show in South Africa, Tonight With Trevor Noah.

“It’s an honor to follow Jon Stewart. He and the team at The Daily Show have created an incredible show whose impact is felt all over the world,” Noah said. “In my brief time with the show they’ve made me feel so welcome. I’m excited to get started and work with such a fantastic group of people.”

Other potential successors to Stewart included Jason Jones and Samantha Bee, but each is bound for their own project with TBS. Jessica Williams, another young correspondent, had also pulled herself out of the running.

"It might be July, September, or December," he said.

Stewart's The Daily Show has become a late-night staple for the network, winning 20 Emmy Awards. It has also spawned several other shows including The Colbert Report, which ended last year after a nine-year run, and The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore, which launched last month.

Stewart took over as host of The Daily Show in 1999 from then host Craig Kilborn and built it into Comedy Central's most recognizable show, appealing to mostly young viewers with a comedic and satiric look at the news and issues of the day. During its run, The Daily Show showcased several comedians who have gone on to create higher profiles including Stephen Colbert, who will replace David Letterman on The Late Show this fall, and John Oliver, whose series Last Week Tonight With John Oliver premiered its sophomore season this past Sunday on HBO.

Stewart told NPR in 2014 that he's wrestled with how long to stay with the show, and its unclear what he will do after his The Daily Show run. In 2013 Stewart took an eight-week break to direct a feature fim, Rosewater. "I Got alot of ideas; I lot of things in my head," he said Tuesday night during The Daily Show.

Also unclear is whether The Daily Show will continue without Stewart. What is clear is that Comedy Central and its parent company Viacom will have a very difficult time filling some very large shoes, according to one executive. Viacom's Media Networks unit, which includes Comedy Central along with Nickelodeon and MTV, posted a 1% operating income loss during first quarter earnings reported last month.

"Comedy Central just lost Colbert and now is losing Stewart -- that is alot of talent walking out the door," said the executive.

Comedian Patton Oswalt tweeted his disappointment in hearing of Stewart's departure: "So we have to navigate the poop-dipped trainwreck of the 2016 election without Jon Stewart hosting The Daily Show? Hmmm..."

Comedy Central said in a statement: "For the better part of the last two decades, we have had the incredible honor and privilege of working with Jon Stewart. His comedic brilliance is second to none. Jon has been at the heart of Comedy Central, championing and nurturing the best talent in the industry, in front of and behind the camera. Through his unique voice and vision, The Daily Show has become a cultural touchstone for millions of fans and an unparalleled platform for political comedy that will endure for years to come. Jon will remain at the helm of The Daily Show until later this year. He is a comic genius, generous with his time and talent, and will always be a part of the Comedy Central family."

The Wire spotted a photo on Twitter and because it combines several great interests — fly-fishing, flying cameras and shows about fly-fishing — checked in with the subject, British Columbia-based angler and guide April Vokey (@ApriVokey on Twitter).

The fancy camerawork is for an upcoming show on World Fishing Network called Shorelines With April Vokey, scheduled to premiere in January.

The concept: Follow “Fly Gal” Vokey (whom you might remember from her 60 Minutes Sports profile or her presence in Tom Brokaw’s Buccaneers and Bones bonefishing series) as she, travels from the highland streams of Scotland to the rivers of North America’s West Coast, writing a book about fly-fishing’s evolution. She's already started blogging about it, and posting photos like the one here, from Ontario.

“It’s never been my dream to be a television host, it’s been my dream to be an author,” Vokey told The Wire from a lodge on the Dean River in British Columbia. That’s why this book concept, pitched to WFN by executive producer Nick Pujic, worked to help make her both an author and a television host simultaneously.

“This is my life-long dream,” she said, adding that she has enjoyed meeting and interviewing experts along the way, chronicling the history of the sport and pointing out that modern methods might not always be best to preserve steelhead and Atlantic salmon fishing in the future.

The sport is diminishing, she said: “People my age aren’t reading anymore. Stories of yesterday are starting to disappear. It’s time to embrace our past and remember it again.”

As for the flying cameras, Pujic, producing the series at Vantage Point Media House, said that’s part of the plan to make Shorelines look different from other fishing shows.

“We’re bringing the highest level of production quality that the fishing-show industry has seen,” Pujic said. The series is being shot on RED Epic cameras, which capture five times the detail of high-definition cameras and enable cool post-production enhancements. “For example, if you’re shooting wide, and the fish jumps, you can punch in and get a tight of that fish jumping all in one shot, and you don’t lose any quality.”

Helicopters are used along with four remote-control drones, capable of carrying cameras ranging in size from a GoPro to a RED Epic. “On our first shoot April hooked the first fish of the entire series, and we had the drone up in the air, 10 feet away from her. So it captured the whole thing, and it’s mesmerizing,” Pujic said.

Pujic also told The Wire: “I’ve been producing fishing shows for eight years and almost every single one is focused around the fish. This one is focused around an individual on a mission."

He said he had no doubts about viewers wanting to follow that mission. "April Vokey is the Tiger Woods of flyfishing," he said. "Not my opinion, that’s the fact. So people are generally interested in what April's up to.” Shorelines, he said, "gives people a glimpse into April’s character that they’ve not had in any articles previously, in any show that she’s been in previously. And at the same time it actually raises awareness about a lot of different issues and concerns that face anglers as a whole that she’s bringing to light. There are things that aren’t often discussed like they should be. So it’s thought provoking. Because of that I think it’s going to engage viewers much more so than watching people in a boat cast line.”

Thus far, the production has been to Eastern Canada and it will visit British Columbia and the United Kingdom this fall. Joining Vokey in her travels are her dog, Colby, and a professional photographer. Nothing to See Here”; “CNN: Where news isWAIT IS THAT THE MALAYSIAN AIRPLANE? No, just a whale? OK … back to news and courtrooms and laws and stuff ”; “CNN: The Near Beer of News.”

Then there is the Instagram submission showing an airport monitor and the slogan: “CNN: If you’re watching this, your flight’s been cancelled.”

— John Eggerton
