Tiger King 2, the follow-up to the hit docuseries, is on Netflix Nov. 17. The true-crime series depicts zookeeper Joe Exotic, who kept a number of tigers at his Oklahoma zoo, but ran afoul of Carole Baskin, who felt Exotic was exploiting the big cats. 

Season one came out in March 2020 and was a massive hit for the streaming platform. 

Exotic was sent to prison for animal abuse and for his role in a plot to kill Baskin. Baskin was on Dancing with the Stars last year. 

Season two sees Exotic behind bars and Baskin closing in on ownership of Exotic’s zoo, Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park. “[The] saga continues its twisted course with Tiger King 2 as newfound revelations emerge on the motivations, backstories and secrets of America’s most notorious big cat owners,” said Netflix. “Old enemies and frenemies, including Jeff Lowe, Tim Stark, Allen Glover and James Garretson return for another season of murder, mayhem and madness.”

As Americans stay locked indoors amid the COVID-19 pandemic, there’s been stuff to watch beyond the very active cable news cycle. But the Netflix docuseries Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem & Madness has emerged as a leader of the pack.

Netflix hasn’t released viewership metrics for the seven-part show, which focuses on breeders of exotic jungle cats and most prominently features Joe Exotic, an Oklahoma-based gay polygamist, gun-toting aspiring singer and breeder, who has been sent to prison since production ended for attempted murder.

Described by Netflix as “a jaw-dropping true tale of con artists, polygamy, rivalry and revenge,” Tiger King has emerged as a go-to, not-so-guilty binge-watching pleasure for out-of-work major league ballplayers and celebrities alike.

Indeed, Tiger King has ranked for over a week as “No. 1 in the U.S. Today,” in the new ranking feature Netflix just began publishing last month. The series has a 92% average rating among critics, according to Rotten Tomatoes.

Tiger King has, to a degree, become the programming face for the overall surge in viewing for streaming content that has emerged as consumers in the U.S. and Europe hunker down at home amid the pandemic.

According to Comscore, for the period of March 1-16, streaming hours via connected TVs in the U.S. were up 24% compared to a year ago, and hours streamed using a streaming box or stick are up 16%. Netflix controlled 37% of that consumption, Comscore said.
