Amazon Renews ‘Transparent’ for Fifth Season

Amazon will bring back its Emmy Award-winning series Transparent for a fifth season, the video streaming service announced Thursday.

The Jill Soloway-produced series, which stars Jeffrey Tambor (Arrested Development), Judith Light (Dallas), Gaby Hoffmann (Girls), Jay Duplass (Togetherness)and Amy Landecker (Louie) will begin production of its fifth season in early 2018 and return to Amazon later in the year, said officials.

The fourth season of Transparent debuts Sept. 22.

Andrea Sperling will continue as executive producer for Transparent along with Soloway, said Amazon.

“Over the past few seasons the Pfeffermans have gone across the world, back in time and made many, many trips to the deli,” said Joe Lewis, Head of Comedy, Drama and VR for Amazon Studios in a statement. “We’re so excited to see what magic Jill and the incredible team bring to this always groundbreaking series in season five.”

Amazon Studios Sets May Premiere Date for ‘I Love Dick’

Amazon Studios will premiere its drama series I Love Dick in May, the service said Friday.

The series, which stars Kathryn Hahn, Griffin Dunne and Kevin Bacon and is based on a relationship-themed book of the same name, will debut on the OTT service on May 12. The series is executive produced by Soloway (Transparent), Andrea Sperling (Transparent), Victor Hsu (Transparent), and Gubbins (Ten Aker Wood).

The series will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on Jan. 23, said Amazon.

Kevin Bacon, Jean-Claude Van Damme Tapped for Amazon Pilots

Amazon in August will offer up three comedy pilots for Amazon Prime subscribers to preview, the service said Thursday.

The new pilots debuting on the OTT service Aug. 19 include a Jill Soloway executively-produced comedy I Love Dick, based on a relationship-themed book of the same name and starring Kevin Bacon; Jean-Claude Van Johnson, starring martial arts actor Jean-Claude Van Damme as a retired undercover private contractor that’s drawn back into the game; and a superhero-based comedy The Tick, starring Peter Serafinowicz.

Similar to other Amazon original series such as Transparent and Mozart In The Jungle, Amazon Prime members can weigh in on which of the pilots eventually becomes an Amazon Original Series.

“Nowhere else will voices as influential as Jill Soloway and Jean-Claude Van Damme share a stage,” said Joe Lewis, head of half-hour series, Amazon Studios. “And that’s just the Js. We’re excited to bring such a diverse slate of pilots to customers and we can’t wait to hear what they think.”

LGBT Technology Partnership Executive Director Chris Wood says series like Emmy-winning Transparent "continue to raise awareness for our community."

Jill Soloway, who won the Emmy Sunday (Sept. 20) for best directing in a comedy series for the Amazon Original offering, used part of her acceptance speech to talk about how far the transgender community has to go. "We don't have a trans tipping point yet, we have a trans problem," she said, urging the audience to go to transequality.org and support the Trans Equality bill.

Jeffrey Tambor, who won an Emmy for his lead portrayal in Transparent, in his speech thanked the transgender community for its patience and for "letting us be part of the change."

Wood said it was past time for the mass media to focus on the community, and give creative artists their due.

"Television, movies and the Internet have been and continue to be a medium to educate society about the LGBTQ community but we are long overdue for shows like Transparent focused specifically on our transgender community," he said in response to the Emmy wins for Soloway and Tambor. "We also need to celebrate and highlight those transgender individuals who have significantly contributed like Trans actress Alexandra Billings for her supporting work on Transparent, Lana Wachowski, writer and director of [Netflix sci-fi series] Sense8, or actress Jamie Clayton, also in Sense8."

We hope that Hollywood and the industry will continue to embrace telling the all too important stories that have been written and acted, by and for our transgender community," he told Multichannel News.

The partnership is holding its annual Fall Policy Forum on Capitol Hill tomorrow (Sept. 22), focusing on the impact of technology, including an open Internet, to benefit the LGBTQ community.

Amazon’s Transparent takes two major Emmys in the comedy category, including best actor honors for lead actor Jeffrey Tambor.

Tambor’s portrayal of a transgendered character beat out Anthony Anderson of ABC’s Blackish; Showtime’s lineup of Matt LeBlanc (Episodes); Don Cheadle (House of Lies) and William H. Macy (Shameless); Louis C.K. of FX’s Louie, and Will Forte of Fox’s Last Man On Earth.

Jill Soloway picked up Transparent's first Emmy for best director in a Comedy Series, winning over directors from The Last Man On Earth, Louie, Silicon Valley, and Veep.

‘Transparent’ Creator Working on MTV Comedy

Transparent creator Jill Soloway is working with MTV to develop a scripted comedy series.

The untitled project tracks two feminist friends. After being struck by lightning, they use their newfound powers to attempt to save womankind.

Soloway’s Transparent took home a pair of Golden Globes for best comedy series and for lead actor Jeffrey Tambo. They were the first Globes for an Amazon Studios' original series.

The female buddy comedy is being developed with writers Lyle Friedman and Ashley Skidmore. Soloway, Robin Schwartz and Brillstein Entertainment Partners will serve as executive producers.

“We are thrilled to be in business with the incredibly talented Jill Soloway,” said Mina Lefevre, senior vice president and head of scripted series for MTV. “When she and Brillstein Entertainment introduced us to Lyle and Ashley and shared with us this fresh and funny take on a female comedy—we knew we had to be in business with this dream team.”
