Hispanic TV Summit: Jenni Rivera's Kids Show Their New Reality

Nearly four years after Jenni Rivera’s untimely death, the premiere episode of a reality series starring the Mexican-American singer’s children drew Hispanic cable’s largest primetime audience Sunday (Oct. 16), according to NBC Universo.

Speaking Thursday at the Hispanic TV Summit, part of NewBay Media’s NYC TV & Video Week, Rivera’s oldest daughter, known as Chiquis, said The Riveras’ early viewership shows the lasting impact of her mother—who had her own reality show before dying in a December 2012 plane crash.

“More than anything, what we wanted to do is represent our mother—she was a single mother—to show the world she did a good job with us,” said Chiquis, who is The Riveras executive producer as well as star.

Chiquis, who was estranged from her mother when she died, said the goal of The Riveras is to show Rivera’s five children in real-life and how they have pulled together since Jenni’s death. The family last appeared in I Love Jenni, the reality series that followed Jenni Rivera for three seasons from 2011-2013.

“We are not perfect,” said Chiquis. “At the end of the day, though, we are open, and I think that’s what people are going to like and relate to.”

Chiquis credited her mother with her siblings’ transformations since their reticent start on I Love Jenni.

“I have seen them grow and they are willing to speak about anything,” she said. “All because we had a strong mother who didn’t give up—and we are not going to give up either.”

Highlighting Rivera’s strength will also be a core component of Mariposa del Barrio, the musical biography the Rivera family is co-producing with Telemundo.

“We are all in about telling my mothers story and telling the strong woman she was,” Chiques said. “We want people to get to know the woman behind her name.”

NBC Universo Series Continues Jenni Rivera’s Legacy

From 2011 through 2013, I Love Jenni was perhaps the biggest draw for the Spanish-language pay TV network then known as mun2.

That series’ run came to a tragic end in December of 2012, when its star, Mexican-American entertainer Jenni Rivera, was killed in a plane crash.

Now, the reality-TV legacy of the woman who commanded a huge legion of fans for her banda and ranchera music and her work for the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence will be continued by her five children. NBC Universo, the network that replaced mun2 in February of 2015, will bow “celeb-reality” series The Riveras on Sunday, Oct. 16, at 10 p.m. ET.

The show focuses on Chiquis, Jacqie, Mikey, Jenicka and Johnny Rivera “as they step up and pull together to pursue their biggest dreams with humor and love.”

“We want to show the world you can continue moving forward despite adversities,” Chiquis Rivera, Jennu Rivera’s eldest daughter, said. “Yes, life without our mother has been painful and difficult. We have weak moments, but at the end of the day we come together as family to figure it out.”

The 10-episode season of The Riveras is executive-produced by Gloria Medel Solomons for NBC Universo and Blank Paige Productions.

“We are excited to give viewers access to Jenni Rivera’s biggest legacy, her children, and to witness their evolution,” NBC Universo senior vice president of programming and production Bilai Joa Silar said. =“Chiquis, Jacqie, Mikey, Jenicka and Johnny are spreading their wings and doing their best to make their mother proud. We are confident our audience will fall in love with The Riveras.”

The first episode of The Riveras will also be available on video-on-demand platforms and via the network’s authenticated NBC Universo NOW website and apps, which require a subscriber login.

Telemundo To Produce Official Jenni Rivera Bio-Musical Series

NBCUniversal-owned Telemundo announced an agreement with the estate of the late musical star Jenni Rivera to produce an official bio-musical series about her life and other specials. The exclusive agreement with Jenni Rivera Enterprises envisions "multiple tribute concerts" starting in 2017 and a series of “Jenni Vive” annual specials associated with Jenni's Love Foundation. As Telemundo notes, the network and the late Regional Mexican singer had a long-standing relationship, including appearances on multiple Billboard Latin Music Awards and the Billboard Regional Mexican Music Awards. Rivera also starred in and executive produced the celeb-reality series I Love Jenni, which aired for three seasons on sister-cable network mun2 now called NBC Universo. Telemundo is essentially reviving or extending that series, via a new show about her family called The Riveras.

Rivera, who died in a plane crash in 2012, founded Jenni Rivera Enterprises, which today is is closely managed by her children and Rosie Rivera Flores and Juan Rivera, Jenni's sister and brother, respectively. JRE owns and controls the iconic Mexican-American star's life story rights, Telemundo said, and manages the Jenni Rivera Love Foundation, a non-profit organization that was particularly important to Jenni for its support of abused and battered women.

In a release, JRE said: "We are excited to partner with Telemundo and the NBCUniversal family to bring to the world the only official television series based on Jenni's life. Jenni's extraordinary career, passion for life, and infinite love for her family are a story never before told on television. Telemundo and JRE are dedicated to together growing Jenni's powerful legacy through this series, the music tribute concerts and other historic projects."

And Telemundo Network president Luis Silbewasser said: "We are both proud and humbled that the Rivera family has chosen Telemundo to do the only authorized television series about her life. We look forward to working with Rosie, Juan and the entire family to preserve Jenni's legacy and bring to our audiences the story of one of the most inspiring and powerful icons of the Hispanic community."
