Iconic entertainer James Brown will be the focus of a new A&E documentary series debuting in February.

The two-night James Brown: Say It Loud documentary will air February 19 and 20, and will examine Brown's innovative and influential life through interviews, never-before-seen archival footage and his music catalog, according to A&E. 

Executive produced by Mick Jagger and Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson, the series traces the trajectory of Brown’s life and career from a 7th grade drop-out to an entertainment legend whose groundbreaking talent and unique perspective catapulted him to become a cultural force, said the network. Featured throughout the documentary are interviews with Bootsy Collins, LL Cool J, The Rev. Al Sharpton, Chuck D, Dallas Austin, and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.

Along with Jagger and Thompson, James Brown: Say It Loud is executive produced by Tariq Trotter, Peter Afterman, David Blackman, Victoria Pearman, Bruce Resnikoff, Shawn Gee, Zarah Zohlman, Charlie Cohen, and Mari Keiko Gonzalez.

BET will partner with Entertainment Tonight on a Sept. 6 news special honoring Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman.

The special, BET and ET Present Chadwick Boseman: Life and Legacy, will be hosted by Kevin Frazier, and will feature compelling and intimate footage of the Black Panther star, who died Aug. 28 at 43 years old due to colon cancer.  

The half-hour news special will follow his career and movie roles, including playing James Brown in Get On Up, to  Jackie Robinson in 24, to Thurgood Marshall in Marshall. Boseman arguably was best known for his starring role in Marvel Studios' The Black Panther. 

“We were all grief-stricken when we learned the tragic news of Chadwick’s passing," said Scott Mills, president, BET in a statement. "He was an accomplished actor, a kind spirit, and an inspiration to millions around the world. He embodied a diverse roster of Black icons with brilliance, and his legacy will forever live on. We send our prayers and heartfelt condolences to his family.

BET Digital will celebrate and honor the actor across digital and social platforms using the hashtags #BETRemembersChadwick. 

Revolt Monday announced several executive promotions within its marketing, sales and programming divisions.

James Brown has been promoted to executive vice president of content distribution, talent and marketing groups, adding to his duties of overseeing the network’s consumer, social and affiliate initiatives, said network officials.

Michael Roche has been named executive vice president of sales and partnerships, adding the Integrated Marketing and Research departments to his oversight of the rapid expansion of Revolt’s advertiser portfolio.

Angela B. Turner promotion to senior vice president of affiliate and consumer marketing will add oversight of the network’s new consumer marketing team to her affiliate marketing role, while Rahman Dukes’ promotion to senior vice president of news, programming and digital will allow him to continue to lead a team of young culture shifters creating innovative and grounding-breaking documentaries, digital and social campaigns, said the network.

 “It’s undeniable that Revolt’s continued success has a direct correlation to the hard work that Angela, Michael, JB, and Rahman have invested,” said Revolt CEO Keith Clinkscales in a statement.  "As the industry continues to evolve, Revolt is committed to being a leader in this space and I couldn’t think of a smarter, stronger and dedicated executive team to work alongside.” 

Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time, Fox’s Cosmos and two HBO original films were among the Peabody Award winners announced Thursday (April 23) in the categories of children’s programming, documentary, education and public service.

In the children's category, Disney Junior’s educational Doc McStuffins joined Adventure Time as an honoree.

HBO's Mr. Dynamite: The Rise of James Brown and The Newburgh Sting were honored alongside Neil deGrasse Tyson'sCosmos reboot in the documentary category.

The 74th annual Peabody Awards presentation is May 31; Fred Armisen (Portlandia, Saturday Night Live) will host.

HBO has acquired the U.S. and Canadian TV rights to the feature-length documentary Mr. Dynamite: The Rise Of James Brown, the network said Thursday.

The full-length documentary, produced by Mick Jagger and produced by Alex Gibney, features rare and never-before-seen footage of the “Godfather of Soul” as well as his performances at the Apollo Theater and Paris Olympia, said HBO officials.

The documentary comes on the heels of the Brown feature length movie Get On Up, which has grossed $29 million at the box office since its release last month.

 “Alex Gibney has brought his prodigious filmmaking talents to this portrait of the phenomenon known as James Brown,” says Michael Lombardo, president, HBO programming in a statement. “Together with Mick Jagger and his incredible producing team, they have created a captivating portrait of an artist – both the musician and the man.”

Revolt TV will air several short vignettes featuring artists reflecting on the life of R&B singer James Brown on the eve of the premiere of Brown’s theatrical biopic Get On Up, the network said Thursday.

The network, in partnership with Universal Studios, is currently running a series of on-air promo spots featuring such artists as Ludacris, Bobby Brown and Common discussing the life and influence that Brown had on the music industry, said network officials.

Get On Up, premieres Aug. 1 and stars Chadwick Boseman, Nelsan Ellis and Viola Davis.
