They said the trial will deliver the first available broadcast footage using 5G technology from a premier U.S. golf event.

Under the plan, those partners will use 5G-based technology to transmit images in 4K and in High Dynamic Range from two Fox Sports cameras positioned on the par-3 seventh hole via the Fox Sports production truck.

For the test, Ericsson has been tapped to provide the 5G radios, baseband, simulated network core, and the 4K video encoder and decoder. Intel, meanwhile will provide its 5G Mobile Trial Platform, billed as a compact device that can transmit at 1.6 Gbps. It will be positioned at the seventh hold to handle the 5G-to-IP translation.

AT&T, meanwhile, will use millimeter wave spectrum to deliver the 5G-based connection.

Those feeds will be available to Fox Sports and its viewers through DirecTV, but in the future, 5G could possibly be used to deliver real-time VR views from the course to viewers as well, Fox Sports noted.

“It’s part of our FOX Sports DNA to aggressively explore evolving technologies as part of our live sports production,” Michael Davies, Fox Sports SVP of field & technical operations, said in a statement. “This is exactly the kind of effort we consistently put into the leading edge of today’s technology, in preparation for what will become the industry standards of the future.”

"As we prepare for the launch of 5G networks, it is essential for us to test real-world business cases, such as for wireless streaming of 4K video at sporting events,” added Niklas Heuveldop, head of market area North America at Ericsson.

Intel’s platform uses a system of HD cameras positioned around a sporting venue along with servers to capture and create a 3D rendering – from multiple angles-- of the on-field action.

RELATED: Intel Acquires Replay Technologies

“We tasked Intel to push their amazing Intel 360 Replay technology to the limit of what it could do, using their array of cameras circling the stadium to synthesize a player’s view on the field,” said Michael Davies, FOX Sports SVP of Field & Technical Operations.

“The cameras, backed up by a huge bank of Intel computing power, allow a moment to be recreated in 3D space, so that a ‘virtual camera’ can be placed at the player’s eye line -- not unlike how limitless camera views can be created in video games,” Michael Davies, Fox Sports’s SVP of field and technical operations, said in a statement. “This broadcast enhancement is like no other -- it literally brings the audience down to the viewpoint of the player at the critical decision-making moment. What other choices did he have? Was his sight blocked? It all looks much different from field level, and can assist our announcers in describing what actually happened on the field.”

This video from the Foster Farms Bowl game between Indiana and Utah illustrates the POV feature that will be employed for Super Bowl LI.

Fox Sports said its production for Super Bowl LI, set for Feb. 5 at NRG Stadium in Houston, will utilize three production trucks and more than 30 cameras (including the use of Super Motion and 4K cameras) to deliver more than 20 hours of programming a day from “Discovery Green” in the city, and 70-plus cameras to cover the game itself.

Puma 7 chipset. Hitron’s D3.1 device recently obtained certification from CableLabs.

RELATED: Hitron ‘Coda-45’ Modem Nets DOCSIS 3.1 Certification

“From a technical perspective, there is still a lot of testing going on and some enhancements are already planned to be deployed between not and the end of January,” the post read, noting that the device isn’t yet IPv6-enabled but should be in the January release.

The post also notes that the Hitron device will available in stores starting Dec. 13, and will be the “new default” product for Rogers Gigabit customers. Current subs on Rogers’s 1-Gig and “250u” (250 Mbps downstream/20 Mbps up with unlimited data) “Ignite” tiers “should be able to swap their existing gateway without issues,” the posting adds.

Rogers has been asked for additional detail about the rollout as well as pricing on the Hitron gateway.

UPDATE: A Rogers official confirmed that the operator has begun to deploy DOCSIS 3.1 on its network while also making the new HItron gateway availalbe. "This week, starting with our Gigabit Internet customers, we're inviting them to swap their existing modem (free of charge) for the new modem that will offer more capacity for faster speeds, more robust performance and more capacity to support our customers’ growing needs," the official added in an email to Multichannel News. Regarding availability through Rogers stores, the MSO is not selling the Hitron device at retail but letting gigabit customers swap out their existing modems at those outlets.

South of Roger’s border, Netgear is gearing up for the retail release of its first DOCSIS 3.1-certified device, the CM1000. Comcast and Cox Communications have already approved it for use on their networks.
