National Geographic will team with actor Idris Elba on a new documentary series profiling World War II heroes of color.

The series, The Color of Victory: Heroes of WW2, reveals the untold stories of the people of color who fought in the war and restores their place in the historic narratives of the war, according to the network. Elba will executive produce and narrate the series, which will also showcase how the war experiences of people of color helped shape and inspire post-war movements for freedom around the world, said Nat Geo officials.

Other new Nat Geo series in production include Inside The FBI, which focuses on how an FBI in turmoil fought to solve some of the most notorious crimes of the 20th Century; and Waking the Dead, in which genetic investigation organization the DNA Doe Project seeks to identify some of the unnamed and unidentified bodies in the US, according to Nat Geo. 

The network also announced it will develop a culinary-themed show featuring author Antoni Porowski. The series, No Taste Like Home With Antoni Porowski, will follow the Queer Eye star as he discovers the rich heritages of global celebrities by way of their ancestors’ food traditions and culinary experiences, said network officials. 

Netflix takes a shot at the western genre with its new original film, The Harder They Fall, which debuts on the streaming service Nov. 3.

The movie, co-written by Jeymes Samuel and Boaz Yakin, follows an outlaw who discovers that his enemy is being released from prison, so he brings together a gang to seek revenge, according to Netflix. The series stars Jonathan Majors, Idris Elba, Regina King, Delroy Lindo and Zazie Beetz.

Elba said that the movie takes a look at the Western genre from a different perspective. 

“I really feel in our community that there’s a real value to the film that restores or at least educates some folks on the history of America. Especially when it comes to Westerns, one thing that Jeymes and I spoke about was the history of Black towns in America,” Elba said in a Netflix press release. “It’s so deep and people don’t know, they’ve been wiped off the face of the map, practically, and so this movie explores that.”

The Harder They Fall, which debuted in select theaters Oct. 22, is produced by Samuel, Shawn “Jay Z” Carter, James Lassiter and Lawrence Bender.

Netflix has dropped a first-look trailer for its upcoming Western-themed original movie The Harder They Fall, starring Regina King and Idris Elba.

Netflix describes the action-filled film as follows: When outlaw Nat Love (Jonathan Majors) discovers that his enemy Rufus Buck (Idris Elba) is being released from prison he rounds up his gang to track Rufus down and seek revenge. Those riding with him in this assured, righteously new school Western include his former love Stagecoach Mary (Zazie Beetz), his right and left hand men — hot-tempered Bill Pickett (Edi Gathegi) and fast drawing Jim Beckwourth (R.J. Cyler)—and a surprising adversary-turned-ally. Rufus Buck has his own fearsome crew, including “Treacherous” Trudy Smith (Regina King) and Cherokee Bill (LaKeith Stanfield), and they are not a group that knows how to lose.

The Harder They Fall is executive produced by Shawn Carter, James Lassiter, Lawrence Bender and Jeymes Samuel.

The National Basketball Association is launching a new “That’s Game” global brand campaign during the start of the NBA Playoffs Saturday.

The campaign will continue to run through next season, running on the league‘s TV partners, ABC, ESPN and TNT.

The campaign talks about how the NBA has advanced the game, grown its community and impacted culture through the league’s history.

The NBA’s first four spots in the campaign are narrated by SAG Award winner Idris Elba and feature an original music composition by Oscar winner Jon Batiste. Emmanuel Adjei directed.

“‘That’s Game’ demonstrates more than just the culmination of play — it’s about the moments that have kept fans connected to the game throughout history and will continue to engage them long into the future,” said NBA chief marketing officer Kate Jhaveri. “We are excited to celebrate the incredible plays that leave us in awe and the impactful community work from players and teams, and we look forward to continuing this storytelling into the 75th anniversary season.”

The campaign is created by marketing agency Translation.

Idris Elba and his wife Sabrina have made a deal with Crunchyroll to develop an animated sci-fi thriller with the working title Dantai. 

Crunchyroll, in the process of being sold to Sony’s Funimation Global Group by AT&T for $1.175 billion, said it now has more than 4 million subscribers, up 1 million in the past six months.

The Elba's will serve as executive producers for Dantai, in conjunction with their production companies, Green Door Pictures and Pink Towel Pictures. 

“We’re really excited to be announcing this deal on our first anime," they said. “We’re both fans of the genre and see a huge opportunity to create something unique for a powerhouse like Crunchyroll. The story of Dantai is our first collaboration as producers together and is one that is close to our hearts.”

Dantai is described as an Afro-futuristic science-fiction series set in a city where biotechnology has created a widening gap between the haves and have nots.

Crunchyroll is adding originals to its library of more than 1,000 titles and 30,000 episodes, which are available to fans in 200 countries and territories. Pasadena, Calif. -- David Lynch made a surprise appearance at Showtime’s TCA press day, speaking about his remake of Twin Peaks, which comes out May 21. True to character, Lynch did not elaborate much, but did shed a hint of light about the considerable anticipation awaiting the series.

“This word 'expect' is a magical word,” he said. “People expect things and their expectations are met, hopefully, when they see the thing.”

Lynch and Mark Frost are behind the project, which will consist of 18 total episodes. Lynch said it was Frost who catalyzed the reboot.

Lynch seemed to take delight in terse answers that kept his interlocutors guessing. His cast members sung the cryptic director’s praises.“Every day is magical, hilarious," sSaid actress Laura Dern. "You’re seeing something you’ve never seen before. It’s the most freeing, wild, wonderful family ride you could ask for in your life.”

The Twin Peaks reboot will debut on May 21 with a two-hour episode, David Nevins, president and CEO of Showtime Networks, announced at the TCA session.

Nevins also said a season four of drama The Affair is in the works and set an April 19 premiere date for John Ridley’s limited series Guerrilla, starring Idris Elba.

Netflix took top honors at Saturday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, which was also notable for its numerous diverse winners.

Netflix won three awards – two for its dramedy series Orange Is The New Black, which repeated as best Ensemble Comedy series as well as for series star Uzo Aduba, who took home the award for outstanding actress in a comedy series for the second year in a row.

House Of Cards’ Kevin Spacey was also a repeat winner, taking home the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series and beating out among other contenders Mad Men’s Jon Hamm in his last year of eligibility for the role of Don Draper in the AMC drama.

As the controversy over the lack of diverse nominations in major acting categories continues to engulf the Academy Awards, African Americans won a slew of SAG Outstanding Actor and Actress awards. Along with Aduba, Viola Davis was a repeat winner as Best Actress in a drama for her role in ABC’s How To Get Away From Murder, and Queen Latifah took home the SAG award for Outstanding actress in a television movie or miniseries for her role in HBO’s Bessie.

Idris Elba's role in BBC America’s Luther won him the top male actor honors in the television movie or miniseries category, while his starring role in Netflix’s Beast Of No Nation won him the SAG award for best male actor in a supporting role.

Detective John Luther will return to BBC America in a two-part special series in 2015, the network said Wednesday.

BBC America in March will begin filming the Golden Globe-winning series Luther special, starring Idris Elba as the conflicted murder detective, with a premiere later next year on the network. Emmy-nominated writer Neil Cross will write the special, said BBC America officials..

Luther ran on BBC America for three seasons, with the last original episode airing in July 2013.

"Ever since we said goodbye to John Luther on Southwark Bridge, there's hardly been a minute when I didn't wonder what happened next, so I decided to find out,” said Cross. “We're putting the band back together;Luther is coming back where he belongs."

Published reports earlier this week said Fox was working on developing a U.S. remake of the series, which would be produced by Elba and Cross.
