USA Network is rebooting Syfy’s 2000’s prank series Scare Tactics, with Jordan Peele helming the project that will launch this fall.

The hidden camera series will look to turn unsuspecting individuals into the main characters of their very own horror movies, according to the network. The original Scare Tactics series, produced by Scott Hallock and Kevin Healey, ran on Syfy from 2003 to 2009. Shannen Doherty, Stephen Baldwin and Tracy Morgan served as hosts during its run. 

According to USA, the unwitting participants — set up by their family and friends — are put in hilariously twisted scenarios with fully immersive stories that blur the lines of reality, horror and comedy.

The Emmy- and Academy Award-winning Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions will produce the series in association with Universal Television Alternative Studio. Peele, Hallock, Win Rosenfeld, Jamal Watson and Elan Gale will serve as executive producers of the series. 

“As one of the most visionary creators of the day, there is nothing Jordan Peele can’t do. We’re honored to be making our first unscripted series together,” NBCUniversal Entertainment executive VP of unscripted content Corie Henson said in a statement. “This brilliant reimagining of the classic Scare Tactics has it all — laughs, jump scares and outrageous moments. In the hands of Jordan and Monkeypaw, you never know what’s coming next!” 

HBO Max will look to build on the success of the It horror movie franchise with a prequel series to New Line movies.

The series, Welcome to Derry, takes place prior to 2017’s IT and 2019’s It Chapter Two movies, which are based on Stephen King’s novel of the same name. The series expands the vision established by filmmaker Andy Muschietti’ two It films, which grossed a combined $538 million at the U.S. domestic box office, according to Box Office Mojo. 

Andy and Barbara Muschietti will serve as executive producers for Welcome to Derry, along with Brad Caleb Kane and Jason Fuchs. HBO Max and Warner Bros. Television will produce the series, according to the streamer.  

“We are thrilled to continue this iconic franchise with the brilliant Andy and Barbara Muschietti, Jason Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane,” HBO Max head of original content Sarah Aubrey said in a statement. “This prequel will expand the IT storytelling canvas and bring fans deeper into the terrifying, mesmerizing town of Derry.” 

Fuchs, who will write the teleplay for the first episode of the series, added: “To be able to return to the world of my all-time favorite horror novel and help build upon the singularly brilliant cinematic universe created by Andy and Barbara is more than the opportunity of a lifetime, it’s a dream come true – or, maybe more impropriety, a nightmare.” ■ 

Cable networks and streaming services will ring in the Halloween season this October with a number of new original scripted series and movies that will look to thrill audiences throughout the month.

Networks like Epix and Showtime along with such streaming services as Prime Video and Netflix and will roll out horror-themed original programming shows that premiere alongside a multitude of Halloween-themed, network programming stunts that celebrate the spooky season, from Freeform’s “31 Nights of Halloween” to Peacock's “Halloween Horror” film collection.

Also slated to premiere this month are the final episodes of AMC’s zombie-themed The Walking Dead series (October 2), the second season premiere of Syfy’s Chucky (October 5) and 11th season premiere of FX’s Emmy-winning American Horror Story (October 19).

TV industry analyst Marc Berman says the television industry has embraced the Halloween season as more viewers tune into scary and horror programming as an escape from the struggles of everyday life. 

“If you go back in history, Halloween has always been celebrated on television, but that celebration keeps getting bigger and bigger,” Berman said. “Viewers just love Halloween, and considering the world that we live in and all the Hell we are going through with everything, it’s just a great escape, and television continues to celebrate it.”

Epix has teamed with Blumhouse Television to develop a docuseries premiering in October that looks at the history of the horror film genre.

The five-part series, Blumhouse’s Compendium of Horror, debuts October 2 and examines iconic cinematic horror moments from the 1930s to the present through insights from influential filmmakers, producers, and actors in the genre, according to Epix.

The series, narrated by Robert Englund (A Nightmare on Elm Street), reflects how quintessential horror films have revealed and reflected the real-life scares of the world to the audience, said the network.

“We’re thrilled to continue our prolific creative partnership with Blumhouse Television,” said Epix president Michael Wright said in a statement. “For more than a century, horror films have been an essential part of the American cultural vocabulary, and we couldn’t think of a better partner to examine the history of the genre than Blumhouse, who have consistently raised the bar in the horror space for over 20 years.”■

HBO Max will bring back its original teen horror series Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin for a second season.

The Warner Bros. Television and Alloy Entertainment-produced series, which ended its freshman season run last month, takes place 20 years after the events of the original Pretty Little Liars series. The original series ran on Freeform from 2010 to 2017. A new generation of teen girls find themselves taunted by an unknown assailant and made to pay for  the secret sin committed by their parents two decades ago, as well as their own sins, according to the streaming service.

The ensemble cast includes Bailee Madison, Chandler Kinney, Zaria, Malia Pyles, Maia Reficco, Mallory Bechtel and Sharon Leal. An LGBTQIA+ conversion camp is the focus of a new trailer for Peacock's original horror film They/Them, debuting on the streaming service August 5.

The film stars Kevin Bacon as the head of a conversion camp attended by several queer and trans campers. According to Peacock, as the camp's methods become more increasingly psychologically unsettling -- and a mysterious killer starts claiming victims -- the campers must work together to protect themselves.

Also starring in the film are Anna Chlumsky, Theo Germaine, Carrie Preston, Quei Tann, Austin Crute, Monique Kim and Anna Lore. 

They/Them is executive produced by Bacon, John Logan, Scott Turner Schofield, Howie Young and Jon Romano, said Peacock officials.■  

AMC unveiled new stories of an zombie apocalypse in the latest trailer for its upcoming horror series Tales of the Walking Dead, debuting August 14. 

The six-episode anthology series -- the fourth in The Walking Dead franchise following the original The Walking Dead series, Fear The Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: World Beyond -- offers stand-alone tales focusing on both new and established characters within the walker apocalypse, according to the network. AMC added that the series will provide viewers with a chance to see the apocalypse through "different eyes, discovering more worlds, mythos and mysteries of the Walking Dead."

Hulu looks to frighten viewers a second time around according to a new trailer for the sophomore season of the streaming service’s American Horror Stories, debuting July 21.

American Horror Stories, a spinoff of Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s anthology series American Horror Story on FX, features a new and different horror-themed story each episode, according to Hulu.

Content production studio Gunpowder & Sky has launched a free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) channel based on its horror-themed Alter service.

The studio’s Alter FAST service will initially launch on distribution outlets Samsung TV Plus, STIRR and Redbox, with more deals pending, according to the company. The Alter brand currently has more than 6 million subscribers across social media services Facebook and YouTube.  

The Alter FAST launch follows the studio’s FAST launch of sci-fi channel Dust, which is currently in front of 100 million homes, according to Gunpowder & Sky. 

“Alter is committed to bringing viewers the best quality horror content in the world, from the freshest voices in the genre,“ Alter Senior Manager of Acquisitions Sophie Carroll said in a statement. “We are excited for an Alter FAST channel to bring more attention to our extensive catalog of originals, as well as highly-curated films and series. It’s a channel for horror fans, by horror fans.” 

Gunpowder & Sky was founded in 2016 by former MTV exec Van Toffler and Floris Bauer, in partnership with The Chernin Group and AT&T.

Epix will bring back its sci-fi horror series From for a second season, the network announced April 24.

The series, which follows mysterious events inside a town that traps all those who enter, will begin production of its 10-episode second season this summer, with an expected return to the network in 2023, Epix said. 

The first season of From debuted Feb. 20 as the premium channel’s most viewed original series premiere ever, and finished as the second most-watched original series behind Godfather of Harlem.

“The first season of From mystified, enthralled, and terrified fans and critics alike with its haunting world, vivid characters and thrilling scares,” said Epix president Michael Wright in a statement. “We have been delighted by the social conversation generated by the From community and can’t wait to unravel more of this mysterious story with our passionate fans in season two.”

HBO's new horror/comedy series about a reluctant mother and her cute but devilish baby will arrive on the premium service April 24, according to the network.  

The eight-episode The Baby series follows the life of a 38-year-old woman who is furious that her closest friends are all having babies, but gets her life turned upside down when she is unexpectedly landed with a baby of her own. The baby, who is controlling, manipulative, but incredibly cute, twists her life into a surreal horror show, according to HBO. 

The series stars Michelle De Swarte, Amira Ghazalla, Amber Grappy, Patrice Naiambana,  Sinéad Cusack, Shvorne Marks, Isy Suttie and Tanya Reynolds.

USA Network and Syfy announced the renewal of original horror-themed series Chucky for a second season, ahead of the show’s first season finale tonight (Nov. 30).

The series, based on based on the Child’s Play killer doll movie franchise, follows high school teenager Jake (Zackary Arthur) who brings home a familiar-looking doll from a a local yard sale, setting off a series of horrifying events that begins to expose the town’s deep hypocrisies and hidden secrets, according to the network.

“We’re thrilled to start pulling the strings on a second season of puppet mayhem with Chucky,” said executive producer Don Mancini in a statement. “Many thanks to our partners at USA, SYFY and UCP for their incredible support and guidance bringing Chucky to the small screen, bigger than ever. And to the fans, Chucky sends his still-undying thanks, and a message: ‘This isn’t over, not by a long shot. You better watch your backs in 2022!’” ■ 

Epix Wednesday released a first-look video trailer for its upcoming horror series, From.

The series, which debuts Feb. 20, unravels the mystery of a nightmarish town in middle America that traps all those who enter, according to Epix. As the unwilling residents fight to keep a sense of normalcy and search for a way out, they must also survive the threats of the surrounding forest – including the terrifying creatures that come out when the sun goes down, the network said.

Discovery Plus’ Oct. 2 premiere of horror series The Haunted Museum ushers in the streaming service’s month-long “Ghostober” lineup of scary and fun Halloween-themed programming from several Discovery-owned networks. 

In The Haunted Museum, Discovery Plus brought together renowned horror filmmaker Eli Roth (Hostel) and paranormal investigator Zak Bagans (Travel’s Ghost Adventures) to create a new series that looks to bring to life stories surrounding legendary haunted and cursed artifacts, according to the streaming service.

Travel Channel and Discovery Plus Paranormal & Unexplained General Manager Matt Butler recently spoke to me about the new series as well as the streaming service's “Ghostober” programming strategy in an interview, an edited version of which appears below.

Picture This: How did The Haunted Museum series come about and what should viewers expect to see from the series?

Matt Butler: I toured Zak Bagans’ [The Haunted Museum exhibit] in Las Vegas and it was really remarkable -- he has some of the most iconic artifacts that I never knew existed and that have known stories within the paranormal community. It was an obvious idea to create a horror anthology series that would tell these stories in a way that’s never been told before, and we needed a great producing partner and someone that could really take it to the next level. We were fortunate enough to talk to Eli Roth, and putting the two of them together was exciting.

PT: So is The Haunted Museum a scripted series or documentary series?

MB: We say semi-scripted, because I think when you say scripted, it has the perception of not being true. But these episodes are inspired by true stories, so we like the term semi-scripted for that reason. It’s a bit of a departure for us -- we’ve done a lot of paranormal investigations and we’ve done shock docs, but this is our first real execution in the semi-scripted space.

PT: You mentioned Eli Roth, who is known for directing successful horror-themed movies. What does his name and expertise in the horror genre bring to the table?

MB: He provided a lot of production details that really help set the series up to make it feel like something special. As part of his vision, he was able to get a number of great young directors together. Also, he and Zak hit it off from the very start. You could see that they both really respected and admired what each has done, so there is a great natural collaboration where you see Zak sharing these stories and you see Eli's excitement because he loves the space.

PT: What is behind the continuing appeal of the horror genre to TV viewers?

MB: I think that people want to believe that there’s more out there, whether it’s an afterlife or aliens -- I feel like a lot of people are looking for that answer to what happens when you die or if we are alone in the universe. I also think that shows like Haunted Museum and another Eli Roth-produced show, A Ghost Ruined My Life, provide a fun thrill ride if you’re into watching horror. Your heart races and you become emotionally invested into the show. There’s a reaction that can be very fun for people instead of just watching content and letting it do its thing -- you’re not as engaged, but the content that we’re doing is very engaging.

PT: How does Haunted Museum fit into Discovery Plus’ overall strategy for its month-long 'Ghostober' programming offering?

This is [Travel Channel’s] fourth annual 'Ghostober' stunt, but the first time we’re partnering with other networks like Food Network and HGTV. It’s now all on Discovery Plus under one banner of 'Ghostober,' and as a streaming service it’s much easier and cleaner to put together all of this content versus a linear channel. 'Ghostober' now means more than just a Ghost Adventures special and some of our paranormal content. It's Food Network’s Halloween Wars -- which Zak is a part of -- as well as Outrageous Pumpkins and Halloween Baking Championship. It’s now more than just the scary stories; it’s also the celebration of October and everything leading up to Halloween. It’s become a much broader stunt that we’re hoping has more appeal across families and other viewers alike.

Horror-themed streaming service Shudder will examine the origins of several iconic movie monsters in a new documentary series Behind The Monsters, the service announced Tuesday during AMC Networks' TCA Summer Press Tour session.

The six-part series will take a deep dive on such cinematic horror icons as Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, Candyman, Chucky and Pinhead through interviews with horror experts as well as the writers, directors and actors from the original films, said network officials. 

“In the history of film, only a handful of stars and characters like Mickey Mouse or Marilyn Monroe have risen to the heights of fame to become instantly recognizable the world over. Yet somehow, a small group of monsters who got their start in low-budget horror movies have transcended their humble beginnings to become international pop culture icons,” Craig Engler, Shudder’s general manager said in a statement. “Behind the Monsters will tell the story of their unlikely rise to fame, from the ideas that inspired them to the indelible mark they’ve left on the world.” 

The streaming service also announced premiere dates for several shows including Slasher: Flesh & Blood (Sept. 16), Creepshow (Sept. 23), V/H/S/94 (Oct. 6), and Horror Noire (Oct. 28).

Syfy on Sunday released the first trailer for its upcoming horror series Chucky, based on the Child’s Play killer doll movie franchise.

The series, debuting Oct. 12 on Syfy and USA Network, follows high school teenager Jake (Zackary Arthur) who stumbles across a familiar-looking doll at a local yard sale. Soon the town is forced to grapple with a series of horrifying murders that begin to expose the town’s deep hypocrisies and hidden secrets, according to the network.

AMC will bring back its horror-themed series NOS4A2 for a second season on June 21, network executives said Friday. 

The sophomore campaign of the series -- based on Joe Hill's best-selling novel of the same name -- picks up eight years after the events of season one in which a gifted girl with the ability to find lost things is pitted against an evil and immortal being who feeds off the souls of children, according to the network. 

NOS4A2 stars Ashleigh Cummings and Zachary Quinto, and is executive produced y Jami O'Brien and Joe Hill.

AMC will air the first season of sister streaming service Shudder’s original series Creepshow beginning May 4, the network said Tuesday.

AMC will air two episodes of the horror anthology series, based on the 1982 Stephen King movie of the same name, every Monday night beginning May 4 and running through May 18, the network said. The series is executive produced by Greg Nicotero (The Walking Dead).

“Creepshow was a phenomenal success in its first season on Shudder. As we continue to experiment with show sharing across our portfolio of defining brands at AMC Networks, it felt like a no brainer to give fans of Greg Nicotero’s masterful zombie work on The Walking DeadUniverse a chance to see this, his passion project,” said Sarah Barnett, president of AMC Networks’ Entertainment Group and AMC Studios in a statement. “Greg’s Creepshow is a brilliant homage to the original classic horror film and we couldn’t happier to air it on AMC, or more grateful to our colleagues at Shudder.”

Showtime is developing a new horror/comedy series The Auteur, starring Jude Law.

The series, which will be executive produced by Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit), follows a film producer who -- desperate to make a great horror movie -- accidentally traps his production on a backlot with a serial killer, according to the network.  

“The Auteur unites the wildly imaginative filmmaker Taika Waititi and the barbed wit of Peter Warren with the undeniable Jude Law in a bloody love letter to the movies that will make you simultaneously die laughing and want to run for your life,” Amy Israel, Showtime executive vice president of scripted programming said in a statement. 

AMC will premiere its new horror-themed series NOS4A2 on June 2, the network said Saturday.

The 10-part series, based on Joe Hill's bestselling novel of the same name, follows a young woman with a supernatural gift of finding things who looks to track down a seductive immortal who feeds off the souls of children, then deposits what remains of them into an icy, twisted Christmas village of Manx's imagination where every day is Christmas Day and unhappiness is against the law, according to the network. 

CBS All Access Thursday revealed the official trailer for its The Twilight Zone reboot, which debuts April 1, according the streaming service.

The series, hosted by Jordan Peele (Key & Peele), will premiere with two episodes on Monday, April 1, followed by all subsequent episodes debuting on Thursdays beginning April 11, said the service. 

The original Twilight Zone premiered on Oct. 2, 1959 on CBS. The Twilight Zone is produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions and Simon Kinberg’s Genre Films. Jordan Peele and Simon Kinberg serve as executive producers along with Win Rosenfeld, Audrey Chon, Glen Morgan, Carol Serling, Rick Berg and Greg Yaitanes.

AMC Networks will bring its Shudder and Sundance Now digital streaming series A Discovery Of Witches to television with the horror show’s April 7 premiere on BBC America and AMC, the network said Saturday.

A Season of Witches will run over eight weeks on both cable networks beginning April 7, the network announced during the Television Critics Association winter press tour presentation.

The series, set in a world where witches, vampires and demons secretly live and work alongside humans, has set Sundance Now records for total video plays, and in its first week on the site accounted for more than half of all streaming activity on the platform, according to the service.

“Thanks to the critical acclaim and overwhelmingly positive audience response to A Discovery of Witches, the series has found a new legion of fans. We are thrilled to bring it to a wider audience and pair it with Killing Eve on both AMC and BBC America,” said Sarah Barnett, President of AMC Entertainment Networks in a statement. “This is a great example of our cross-network strategy; to expose our series to new audiences across our ecosystem of networks and streaming services.”

In other streaming news, Shudder announced it has begun production on its first long-form series, Creepshow, based on the iconic 1982 anthology film written by Stephen King and directed by George A. Romero.

The six-episode season will be executive produced by Greg Nicotero (The Walking Dead), according to the streaming service.

USA Network has picked up a second season of its horror/drama series The Purge, the network announced Tuesday.

The sophomore season renewal of the series -- based on the popular movie franchise of the same name – comes as the show ends its freshman run on Nov. 6. The Blumhouse Television/Universal Cable Productions produced show is averaging 2.3 million total viewers and 1.2 million 18-49 year old viewers.

IFC will offer a sneak peek of the third season of its horror/comedy series Stan Against Evil via several digital and on demand outlets, according to network officials.

IFC is currently offering an episode from the series' upcoming third season on IFC.com, IFC On Demand, The IFC App, AMC Premiere and YouTube, said IFC. The third season of Stan Against Evil, which stars John McGinley and Janet Varney,  premieres Oct. 31 on IFC, said network officials. 

Stan Against Evil is created, written and executive produced by Dana Gould, with Tom Lassally and Frank Scherma also serving as executive producers. 

FX has released the official trailer for the eighth season of its Emmy-winning horror anthology series American Horror Story: Apocalypse.

The series, which debuts Sept. 12, continues the anthology horror series created and produced by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk. Sarah Paulson stars in the eighth installment of the series along with Evan Peters, Alison Pill, Adina Porter, Billie Lourd and Cheyenne Jackson. 

AMC Networks’ premium video streaming service Shudder has tapped legendary drive-in movie critic Joe Bob Briggs for a 24-hour movie marathon on July 13 – "The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs."

Briggs, whose “Joe Bob’s Drive-In Theater” and “MonsterVision” shows were staples of late-night cable in the 1990s, returns for one night on Shudder, screening 13 movies over a full day, interspersed with his own commentary before, during and between films.

While there is not likely to be an Oscar nominee in the bunch, many of the films selected have achieved cult status in the horror, thriller and suspense genres, including Tourist Trap, Sleepaway Camp,  and Basket Case.

"Joe Bob is a horror icon and raconteur whose signature wit and insightful commentary entertained viewers for 14 years on TV,” said Shudder general manager Craig Engler in a statement. “We’re delighted to bring him back for this exclusive Shudder event where new fans can discover him, and old fans can rediscover him, as he takes on some of the greatest low-budget horror movies ever made.”

Other initiatives centered around the marathon include an upcoming Reddit AMA on July 10th, as well as screenings hosted by Joe Bob at the Nitehawk Cinema in Brooklyn, NY on July 11th and the Alamo Drafthouse in Dallas, TX on July 12th.

FX’s anthology series American Horror Story: Cult drew 6.9 million viewers on a Nielsen Live +3 basis for its Sept. 5 premiere, said network officials.

The Ryan Murphy-produced series – the seventh iteration of the American Horror Story anthology franchise – also drew 4.5 million adult 18-49 viewers, making it the second most-watched basic cable entertainment program of 2017 year-to-date in both the demo and on a total audience basis behind AMC’s The Walking Dead, said network officials.

Including non-linear viewing, the series averaged 6.91 million total viewers for its premiere telecast, said FX.

A&E Network will get into the Halloween spirit with the Oct. 9 premiere of its supernatural thriller mini-series, The Enfield Haunting, said network officials.

The three-part series, adapted from Guy Lyon Playfair’s book This House Is Haunted, will focus on the terrifying, real-life supernatural events that took place in a London home in 1977, said network officials.

Timothy Spall (Harry Potter, The King's Speech) and Juliet Stevenson (Emma, Truly Madly Deeply, The Village) will star in The Enfield Haunting, which will air on consecutive Fridays, said A&E. 

WGN will bring back its horror-themed series Salem for a third season, the network announced Saturday at the Comic Con International convention in San Diego.

The series, which reimagines the infamous 17th century witch trials in Massachusetts, averaged over 1.1 million viewers and 545,000 adults 18-49 on a live +7 basis, according to Nielsen.

Salem, which stars Janet Montgomery (Human Target), Shane West (Nikita) Seth Gabel (Arrow) and Ashley Madekwe, is executive produced by Brannon Braga, Adam Simon, Josh Barry and Jeff Kwatinez for Prospect Park, Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson, said network officials.

Syfy will air 600 hours of horror and thriller-themed programming as part of its 31 Days Of Halloween October programming stunt.

The network’s 7th annual spook-a-thon, which runs from Oct. 1-31, will feature such horror films as the remake of the as well aTexas Chainsaw Massacre s Shutter, said network officials.

On the original side, Syfy will premiere docuseries Town Of The Living Dead as well as the 200th episode of reality series Ghost Hunters. In addition, Syfy will premiere three original movies – Dark Haul, Dead Still and Finders Keepers -- during the month.
