Fox Sports and ESPN’s coverage of Major League Baseball All-Star festivities generated a ratings home run among last week’s live sports telecasts.  

Fox’s July 11 All-Star Game broadcast drew 7 million viewers to top all sports events for the week, according to Nielsen numbers published by SportsMedia Watch. The contest, won by the National League for its first victory over the American League since 2012, was the least-watched baseball All-Star game, dropping 7% from the previous low set last year. The game, however, still remains the most-watched All-Star Game among the major sports, according to SportsMedia Watch.

ESPN’s July 10 Home Run Derby telecast was the second-most watched live sports event last week with 5.52 million, but the number was down from last year’s 6.8 million viewers, and was the lowest since the 2018 event, according to Sports Business Journal. 

The conclusion of the CONCACAF Gold Cup soccer tournament placed several telecasts among the top 10 most watched events, including Univision’s coverage of the July 16 Mexico-Panama tournament final, which drew 4.32 million viewers. 

ESPN's July 16 telecast of the Wimbledon men's finals between Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic finished fourth for the week with 3.19 million viewers, which was the biggest audience for the event since 2019. 

Also, ABC's July 15 WNBA All-Star Game drew 850,000 viewers, making it the league’s most-watched All-Star game in 16 years, according to ESPN. 

 As Major League Baseball enters its annual All-Star Game break, ESPN will step to the plate on Monday to provide live coverage of the 2023 Home Run Derby. 

ESPN will begin its Home Run Derby coverage on Monday night (July 10) with its Baseball Tonight pregame show before airing the live competition from Seattle’s T-Mobile Park.  

ESPN2, will offer a stats-heavy alternative feed including analytics-focused commentary driven by on-screen graphics, data and information provided by MLB StatCast. Also, the home run coverage and ball flight will be displayed via 3D animation during the telecast, according to the network. 

Last year’s Home Run Derby, won by then-Washington Nationals outfielder Juan Soto, drew 6.9 million viewers across ESPN and ESPN2, down 3% from the previous year, according to Nielsen. 

This year’s participants include Julio Rodriguez (Seattle Mariners), Vladimir Guerrero (Toronto Blue Jays), Mookie Betts (Los Angeles Dodgers), Randy Arozarena (Tampa Bay Rays), Pete Alonso (New York Mets), Adley Rutschman (Baltimore Orioles), Luis Robert (Chicago White Sox) and Adolis Garcia (Texas Rangers). 

ESPN’s Home Run Derby coverage will be hosted by Karl Ravech and Eduardo Perez, with analysts Buster Olney and Alden Gonzalez providing interviews and commentary. Ravech, during a recent press call for the event, said the fast pace of the at-bats during the Home Run Derby makes announcing the event difficult but contributes to its appeal for viewers. 

“It resonates not only with the people in the stands and watching, but also with the competitors,” he said. “There is something about a home run and a home run champion that resonates with people.” 

Tuesday’s All-Star Game will air on Fox. 

Fox News outpaced all cable networks in primetime for the second straight week as it looks to dominate the remaining weeks of summer cable viewing.

Fox News averaged 2.1 million viewers in primetime for the week of July 12 to July 18 to top all cable networks, according to Nielsen. ESPN, which benefited from strong viewership numbers for its coverage of baseball’s July 19 Home Run Derby (7.1 million viewers), finished in a tie with MSNBC for second place with 1.3 million average viewers. HGTV finished fourth with 1.2 million viewers, followed by Hallmark Channel’s 998,000 watchers.

History (940,000), TLC (845,000), CNN (831,000), USA Network (763,000) and INSP (757,000) rounded out the top 10 most watched cable networks last week in primetime.

Fox News extended its total day winning streak to 22 weeks in a row, averaging 1.1 million viewers, besting MSNBC (776,000 viewers), HGTV (644,000), CNN (573,000) and Hallmark Channel (558,000), said Nielsen.

VH1’s music-themed shows struck a chord with Twitter users last night.

The network’s Hip Hop Honors: All Hail The Queens music special was the most tweeted entertainment show of the day, generating 484,000 tweets, according to Nielsen’s daily Twitter TV ratings report. VH1’s Love and Hip Hop: Atlanta finished second with 146,000 tweets, according to Nielsen.

USA’s WWE Monday Night Raw, ABC’s The Bachelorette and Freeform’s The Fosters rounded out the top five most tweeted shows for the day.

ESPN’s 2016 T-Mobile Home Run Derby telecast was the most social live sports event of the day, garnering 306,000 tweets, according to Nielsen.

Virtual reality company NextVR and Major League Baseball Advanced Media (MLBAM) will offer baseball fans a VR option for the July 11 Home Run Derby in San Diego, the companies announced.

The VR experience of the Home Run Derby will be available on demand immediately following the event Monday night. During the game several VR cameras will capture field-level shots, alongside an outfield camera that will capture fan reactions. MLB.com analyst Mike Petriello will provide live audio commentary.

The live Home Run Derby, the lead-up event to Tuesday's MVB All-Star Game, airs on ESPN Monday at 8 p.m.

ESPN's telecast of the 2015 Home Run Derby last night slammed its way to a 4.9 overnight rating, according to Nielsen.

The event, which airs annually prior to Major League Baseball's All-Star Game, was up 26% over last year's edition which averaged a 3.9 rating, said ESPN.

The Derby, which was held at the Cincinnati Reds' Great American Ball Park, was won by the Reds' slugger Todd Frazier (pictured) in front of the hometown fans.

The telecast also drew the most Twitter activity for a sports event last night, drawing 6.6 million unique Twitter users, according to Nielsen's daily Twitter TV Ratings report.
