The 66th Annual Grammy Awards averaged 16.9 million viewers, up 34% from last year, and the largest Grammys audience since 2020, CBS reported. CBS and Paramount Plus aired the event, which happened February 4 at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. 

Trevor Noah hosted. Presenters included Oprah Winfrey, Meryl Streep, Lionel Richie and Lenny Kravitz, and the performers included Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, SZA, Billy Joel, Joni Mitchell and U2, the latter performing at the Sphere in Las Vegas and then presenting best pop vocal album. 

That Grammy went to Taylor Swift for her album Midnights. Swift stepped to the podium and announced that her next album, The Tortured Poets Department, comes out in April. 

The Grammys were on from 8 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. 

Ratings peaked in the 9:45 p.m. quarter hour, with 18.25 million viewers watching the In Memoriam segment, with performances by Stevie Wonder, Annie Lennox, Jon Batiste and Fantasia Barrino. 

Live viewership on Paramount Plus grew 173% from last year. 

Other highlights included Tracy Chapman and Luke Combs performing “Fast Car,” Jay-Z getting the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award, and Celine Dion making a surprise appearance as she battles a rare neurological disorder, then presenting album of the year to Swift. 

Ratings for The 65th Annual Grammy Awards a year ago grew 30% from the previous year. The 2022 Grammys had shifted to April amidst concerns over COVID-19 and moved to Las Vegas. The 2021 Grammys were held outdoors due to the pandemic. 

Christina Aguilera, Lenny Kravitz, Lionel Richie, Meryl Streep and Oprah Winfrey will be presenters at The 66th Annual Grammy Awards, which airs on CBS and streams on Paramount Plus February 4.

Nigerian singer-songwriter Burna Boy, country singer Luke Combs and rapper Travis Scott have been added to the performance lineup for the 66th Annual Grammy Awards. The event happens at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles February 4. CBS and Paramount Plus will air the Grammys and Trevor Noah will host. 

Noah also hosted in 2021, 2022 and 2023. He signed off as host of The Daily Show on Comedy Central in December 2022. 

CBS shared the news about the performers during its telecast of the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills playoff game January 21. 

Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa and Olivia Rodrigo will also perform at the Grammys, which celebrate the best in music.

The Recording Academy hosts the Grammy Awards, given out to the best in music. 

Grammy nominations will be announced on Friday, November 10. 

The 65th Annual Grammy Awards on CBS drew 12.4 million viewers, up 30% from last year. It was the largest audience for the Grammys since 2020, CBS said, according to Nielsen time zone-adjusted fast national ratings for February 5. 

Trevor Noah hosted the event at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Noah also hosted last year’s Grammys. The 2022 event shifted from January 31 to April 3 due to COVID concerns, and moved from the Crypto.com Arena to the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. 

In 2021, the Grammys were held outdoors, due to COVID-19, with no audience. 

CBS said the live-streaming audience for the 2023 Grammys grew 33% from last year in both AMA and total minutes. 

Bad Bunny opened the February 5 show. Beyonce set the record for most career Grammys. Harry Styles won album of the year for “Harry’s House”, Lizzo got record of the year for “About Damn Time” and Bonnie Raitt won song of the year for “Just Like That.” Samara Joy was named best new artist. ■

Harry Styles is lined up to perform at the Grammy Awards February 5. The news was announced in a CBS promo during the AFC Championship game January 29. 

Styles is up for six Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year, Album of the Year and Song of the Year. 

An Englishman, Styles broke through on The X Factor in 2010, then was in One Direction before going solo.

With the Grammys moving to that date, The CMT Music Awards will move out of its April 3 slot to an April date and venue to be announced. 

It is CBS’s first time airing the CMT Awards. The 2021 awards, hosted by Kelsea Ballerini and Kane Brown, aired on multiple ViacomCBS networks, including CMT, MTV, Logo and Paramount Network. 

“Once we realized the need to move the Grammy Awards to a later date due to current health concerns, we came together quickly with our partners at the Recording Academy and CMT, to strategically reschedule these two incredible music events and utilize the full power of the ViacomCBS ecosystem to promote them,” said Jack Sussman, executive VP, specials, music, live events & alternative programming, CBS. “Coming out of an exciting month of college basketball on CBS, we’re thrilled to continue our programming momentum with these two big live events for television in the spring.”

The Grammys are produced by Fulwell 73 Productions for the Recording Academy. Raj Kapoor is showrunner and executive producer alongside Ben Winston, and Jesse Collins is executive producer.

The delay of the 64th Annual Grammy Awards because of the spread of COVID-19 puts the estimated $67 million in ad sales the show has generated for CBS in jeopardy.

The 2021 Grammys generated $67.6 million in ad revenue for CBS, according to ad data and analysis company Standard Media Index. That was up from $67 million in 2020 and $60.2 million in 2019, despite falling viewership.

Advertisers paid an average of $866,200 for 30-second spots in the 2021 broadcast, according to SMI, up from $831,000 in 2020 and $784,400 in 2019.

No new date for the award show has been set.

A postponement could lead some advertisers to change plans. If the awards are canceled, CBS would lose a high-profile, premium event.

If COVID-19 makes it difficult to stage the event in person, without compelling live performances, viewership could further erode.

The new date for the Grammys, which celebrate the best in music, has not been revealed.

“After careful consideration and analysis with city and state officials, health and safety experts, the artist community and our many partners, the Recording Academy and CBS have postponed the 64th Annual Grammy Awards Show,” the partners said in a statement. “The health and safety of those in our music community, the live audience, and the hundreds of people who work tirelessly to produce our show remains our top priority. Given the uncertainty surrounding the Omicron variant, holding the show on January 31st simply contains too many risks. We look forward to celebrating Music’s Biggest Night on a future date, which will be announced soon.” ■

College basketball retained its grip on the top of the ranking, capturing 2.64% of all minutes watched during the week. The PGA Tour’s 2021 Players Championship came in second place (1.42%), followed by Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (0.98%). The Voice rose from tenth to seventh place week-over-week, and essentially tied with the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards, both with 0.63% of watch-time. Dateline: Secrets Uncovered was a new entrant to the ranking, taking No. 23 with 0.43%.

Thanks in part to the 2021 Players Championship and The Voice, NBC moved into first place, capturing 7.72% of all minutes watched last week. ABC, Fox, Fox News Channel, CNN, Nickelodeon, Bravo and TV Land all maintained their ranking positions week-over-week, while Ion Television had the biggest increase among the networks, moving from No. 15 to No. 12, thanks in part to reruns of Blue Bloods and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

March Madness is approaching, and TV ad impressions for college basketball are going up: There was a 44.57% week-over-week increase, up to 2.3 billion, for games during the last week. The Voice rose up the ranking to fourth place with 587.8 million TV ad impressions, while the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards snagged seventh place with 506.3 million TV ad impressions. Impressions for The Bachelor edged up to 312 million, a 9.86% increase from the previous week. 

CBS continues to rule the network rankings, with its 5.9 billion TV ad impressions constituting a slight 1.61% increase from the previous week, driven in part by The Price Is Right, college basketball and the Grammys. Thanks in part to The Voice and the 2021 Players Championship, NBC rose up to second place with 4.2 billion impressions. TLC was another network with a week-over-week increase: it snagged 494.9 million impressions, with top shows including 90 Day Fiancé, Sister Wives and My 600-Lb. Life. Notably absent is TBS, which was No. 14 on the ranking the previous week but dropped to No. 63 (44.2 million impressions). 

The 63rd Annual Grammy Awards is shifting from Jan. 31 to March 14 due to the COVID-19 situation in Los Angeles. Trevor Noah will host and CBS will air the event. 

“After thoughtful conversations with health experts, our host and artists scheduled to appear, we are rescheduling The 63rd Annual Grammy Awards to be broadcast Sunday, March 14, 2021,” said the Recording Academy, CBS and the producers in a statement. “The deteriorating COVID situation in Los Angeles, with hospital services being overwhelmed, ICUs having reached capacity, and new guidance from state and local governments have all led us to conclude that postponing our show was the right thing to do. Nothing is more important than the health and safety of those in our music community and the hundreds of people who work tirelessly on producing the show.”

It will be Noah’s first time hosting the music awards. 

“We want to thank all of the talented artists, the staff, our vendors and especially this year’s nominees for their understanding, patience and willingness to work with us as we navigate these unprecedented times,” said the organizers. 

CBS and the Recording Academy said that Trevor Noah will be the host of the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards, which will air Jan. 31 on the broadcast network and streamed live and on demand on the CBS All Access streaming service.

Noah hosts the Daily Show on Comedy Central, which like CBS is part of ViacomCBS. It will be Noah’s first time hosting the Grammys.

Noah was nominated for a Grammy for Best Comedy Album, but didn’t win.

“Despite the fact that I am extremely disappointed that the Grammys have refused to have me sing or be nominated for best pop album, I am thrilled to be hosting this auspicious event,” said Noah. “I think as a one-time Grammy nominee, I am the best person to provide a shoulder to all the amazing artists who do not win on the night because I too know the pain of not winning the award! (This is a metaphorical shoulder. I’m not trying to catch Corona). See you at the 63rd Grammys!!”

Last night’s live telecast of the Grammy Awards and AMC’s The Walking Dead episode garnered heavy social media usage, according to Nielsen.

CBS’ telecast of the 59th annual Grammy Awards drew 27.6 million interactions on Facebook and Twitter, topping all TV shows airing yesterday, according to Nielsen’s Social Content Ratings Daily report.

Last night’s debut of the second half of The Walking Dead’s seventh season drew 2.5 million social media interactions across more than 1.6 million unique social media accounts to finish second for the day.

The WWE’s Elimination Chamber pay-per-view event finished third with more than 693,000 social media interactions, followed by BBC America’s The British Academy Film Awards and Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Atlanta, according to Nielsen.

ABC’s telecast of the San Antonio Spurs-New York Knicks National Basketball Association game was the most social live sports event for the day, said Nielsen.
