Netflix will bid farewell to two long-running series and Apple TV Plus debuts a new thriller starring The Handmaid’s Tale’s Elisabeth Moss this week as the calendar changes to May.

Netflix on April 29 will launch the final seven episodes of its Emmy-winning original drama series Ozark. The second half of the show’s fourth season will feature series stars Jason Bateman, Laura Linney, Sofia Hubbitz and Skylar Gaertner.

Also on the 29th, the streaming service will stream the remaining 12 episodes of the seventh season of hit comedy series Grace and Frankie. The Emmy-nominated series stars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.

Moss stars in Apple TV Plus’ new sci-fi/drama series Shining Girls, which follows the trail of a time-travelling serial killer. The series, which also stars Wagner Moura, debuts April 29 on the streaming service.

The second week of January features a bevy of new and returning show premieres from cable networks and streaming services.

Paramount network on Jan. 15 will premiere 68 Whiskey, a new drama series chronicling army medics serving in Afghanistan, while Apple TV+ on Jan. 17 launches a new family-themed series Diary of a Future President.

On the returning series front, Netflix will launch the sixth season of its comedy series Grace and Frankie on Jan. 15, while the next day Freeform will launch the third season of grown-ish.

Netflix Debuts New Season of ‘Grace and Frankie’ Jan. 15

Season six of Grace and Frankie begins on Netflix Jan. 15. Jane Fonda plays Grace and Lily Tomlin plays Frankie, women whose lives are turned upside down when their husbands reveal they are gay, and are leaving their wives for each other.

Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston play the ex-husbands.

Netflix calls Grace and Frankie “sparring partners and partners-in-crime.”

Marta Kauffman and Howard J. Morris created the show. They are executive producers, along with Paula Weinstein, John Hoffman, Billy Finnegan, Robbie Tollin, Fonda, Tomlin, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Marcy Ross.

Season five premiered in January 2019.

NATPE has named executive producer Greg Berlanti (Arrow, Flash), Telemundo and NBCUniversal International chairman Cesar Conde, award-winning actress Jane Fonda (Grace and Frankie), TBS and TNT president Kevin Reilly, and award-winning actor Tom Selleck (Blue Bloods) as recipients of the 15th Annual Brandon Tartikoff Legacy Award.

They will receive the prestigious award at a special reception on Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2018, at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach, Fla.

The Brandon Tartikoff Legacy Award is presented each year during the annual NATPE Miami Market and Conference, which will next take place under the new theme “A Changing Industry in a Changing World,” Jan. 16-18, 2018, at the Fontainebleau & Eden Roc hotels in Miami Beach.

“Each of the Tartikoff honorees is a leader in their field and a legend in the industry," said Andy Kaplan, president of Sony Pictures Television Networks and chair of NATPE. "We are thrilled to celebrate the substantial achievements of Greg Berlanti, Cesar Conde, Jane Fonda, Kevin Reilly and Tom Selleck at this year’s event in Miami."

The 2018 Tartikoff Legacy Award recipients are recognized for exhibiting their extraordinary passion, leadership, independence and vision through their diverse work in being a part of the creation and distribution of content for the world’s traditional and digital marketplaces. Named in honor of Brandon Tartikoff, one of the most esteemed programmers in the history of television, the Award was created to acknowledge a select group of television professionals who have demonstrated the highest degree of excellence in their field.

Netflix Renews ‘Grace and Frankie’

Netflix has renewed its original comedy series Grace and Frankie for a second season.

The series, which stars Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda as reluctant friends who bond after their husbands leave them to get married as a gay couple, will return in 2016.

The announcement was made Tuesday night during a West Hollywood-based event that featured Fonda and Tomlin along with co-creators and executive producers Marta Kauffman and Howard J. Morris.

The 13-episode series, which also stars Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston, launched on Netflix May 8.

5 Ways ‘Grace and Frankie’ Breaks the Mold

Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin have teamed up again for Netflix comedy Grace and Frankie. The 9 to 5 duo portray two women whose longtime husbands -- Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston -- decide they would rather be married to each other. The entire 13-episode first season premieres on May 8 in Netflix’s traditional binge-friendly style.

Here are five ways Grace and Frankie has already separated itself from the pack.

Older women are underrepresented in television series. “[Women who are] 40 and older are actually 47 percent of [the female] population here in the U.S., yet only 26 percent of women on TV,” according to a 2013 interview with documentary director Jennifer Newsom. Grace and Frankie’s stars are 77 (Fonda) and 75 (Tomlin).
Older women are usually depicted as grandmas (think ABC’s Fresh off the Boat). The characters of Grace and Frankie are presented as they see themselves: multifaceted, independent and still vital— as Tomlin’s Frankie demonstrates in the trailer by doing a squat and yelling: “I am young. My joints are supple!”
Older gay characters are essentially nonexistent on television. GLAAD’s most recent Where We Are on TV report detailing annual statistics and trends in LGBTQ inclusion on TV mentioned only one “elderly” character, Oscar (Elliot Gould) on Fox’s failed sitcom Mulaney. Grace and Frankie’s Robert (Sheen) and Sol (Waterston) join Maura (Jeffrey Tambor) on Amazon Prime’s Transparent, broadening the field of 70-plus LGBTQ characters.
The series is not an adaptation, sequel or continuation. This month Netflix premiered Daredevil, adapting the popular comic book character’s story for television. This summer the streaming service will return book adaptation Orange Is the New Black and premiere a series based on cult film favorite Wet Hot American Summer. While the OTT programmer could’ve worked out a deal to extend the story of 9 to 5, it opted to develop an original story instead.
It’s the only TV show in which Jane Fonda has agreed to star. Although the Oscar-winning actress (Coming Home), who has been in the business since 1960, was a guest on HBO’s Newsroom, Grace and Frankie is the only television series she has taken a lead role in.
