Nikki Glaser, comedian and actress, will host the Golden Globes Sunday, January 5 on CBS and Paramount Plus. It will be the 82nd annual Golden Globes. CBS aired the 81st event in January of this year. 

“The Golden Globes  has a rich history as a night for entertaining, provocative humor,” said George Cheeks, office of the CEO, Paramount Global, President and Chief Executive Officer, CBS. “Nikki Glaser is a comedic force whose funny, bold and irreverent comedy will continue that legacy and further establish this special as a can’t miss event on CBS.” 

Glaser hosted the HBO comedy specials “Good Clean Filth” and “Nikki Glaser: Someday You’ll Die.” She hosts and executive produces Lovers and Liars, the spinoff of FBoy Island, which Glaser hosted and executive produced for three seasons.  

“I am absolutely thrilled to be hosting the Golden Globes. It’s one of my favorite nights of television and now I get a front row seat (actually, I think I have to host from the stage),” said Glaser. “The Golden Globes is not only a huge night for TV and film, but also for comedy. It’s one of the few times that show business not only allows, but encourages itself to be lovingly mocked (at least I hope so). (God I hope so). It’s an exciting, yet challenging gig because it’s live, unpredictable, and in front of Hollywood’s biggest stars (who also might be getting wasted while seated next to their recent exes).”

I just hope to continue in that time-honored tradition (that might also get me canceled). This is truly a dream job. Plus, I no longer have to feel guilty for every TV show and movie I’ve binged over the past year. It was all worth it. (Below Deck: Sailing Yacht Season four will be nominated, right?).”

The Golden Globes will remain on CBS and Paramount Plus for five more years, according to a new deal between Paramount and Dick Clark Productions, which owns the awards ceremony. The new agreement kicks off with the January 2025 broadcast, keeping the Globes on CBS and Paramount Plus through January 2029. 

CBS picked up the rights to the Golden Globes last year and aired its first edition of the film and television awards show on Sunday, January 7. The 81st Annual Golden Globe Awards averaged nearly 10 million viewers, according to Nielsen’s live plus seven day national ratings, up nearly 50% from last year and the show’s largest audience since its pre-pandemic airing in 2020. That broadcast also was the third-largest live-streamed CBS special event ever on Paramount Plus in terms of reach, according to Paramount. Broadcast TV is increasingly reliant on sports (especially football) and live events to draw big audiences.

“CBS’ collaboration with the Globes for this year’s broadcast was a big win for both of us and established strong momentum for awards shows in 2024,” George Cheeks, president and CEO of CBS, said in a statement. “The Globes is a one-of-a-kind live event that adds another marquee special and valuable promotional platform to CBS’ annual calendar.”

The Golden Globes was formerly run by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) and had aired on NBC since 1996. There, the show, which featured celebrities partying while receiving awards, drew in an audience second only to the Oscars. That in turn drew a big license fee: NBC was reported to pay HFPA $60 million a year for the privilege of airing the show. 

But a 2021 exposé in the Los Angeles Times that questioned the HFPA’s ethics and diversity upended the organization, eventually causing it to dissolve. NBC skipped the Golden Globes in 2022 but gave it one more shot in 2023. In the meantime, the Globes were sold to a joint venture between Dick Clark Productions, which is owned by Penske Media, and Eldridge Industries. Today, the Golden Globes are viewed in more than 185 countries around the world.

But something funny happened on the way to the dustbin of Golden Globes history. Ratings had a dead-cat bounce, rising to 9.4 million viewers — a 50% jump from 2023’s record low of 6.3 million viewers.

Whether more people tuned in from social media’s lambasting of Koy’s unfortunate performance or whether they were drawn to the quality of the nominees (Barbie, Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon), and attendees (Taylor Swift, Greta Gerwig, Leonardo DiCaprio, Martin Scorsese, Robert DeNiro), is difficult to determine.

Linear TV is still quite a powerful advertising platform for live sports and tentpole events such as awards shows. The reasons are simple: ratings, cultural relevance via social media, and the ripple effect for days or even months after the fact in the form of user-generated shareable content (tweets, posts, hashtags and memes). 

Each year, Q1 is brings the linear-TV ad trifecta: the Grammy Awards (February 4), Super Bowl LVIII (February 11), and the Oscars (March 10). Perhaps the Golden Globes should be included to make Q1 a “quadfecta?” 

In 2020, the Grammy Awards drew about 19 million viewers, which fell to under 10 million in 2021 and 2022 before rising in 2023 to 12.5 million. And the bored Ben Affleck meme is still memorable a year later. 

The Super Bowl never fails to disappoint as a ratings draw with roughly 100 million viewers each year. While ratings for the other two shows fluctuate wildly, all are amplified by social media commentary.

Despite the high out-of-pocket cost, the substantial volume of web traffic more than offset the cost, resulting in a lower cost-per-visit for the Super Bowl. The down-funnel impact on new customers and conversions from the Super Bowl was similarly strong and efficient, with the greatest impact realized within the first three days and measurable for approximately 25 days post-spot.

Pregame spots have proven to generate a strong response for numerous brands. Placing ads in tentpole programming elevates awareness among consumers and adds legitimacy and credibility. This is important because there has been a steady decrease in ratings for primetime programming each year, showing a decline of 13.83% from 2022 to 2023.

Clever creative in the right placement drives conversations that happen outside of live broadcasts; what used to be called the “water-cooler” effect — next-day conversations in the workplace — can become immortal online.

The “Breaking Bad” Super Bowl spot for PopCorners last year was widely shared and discussed on social media, even though it aired only once on TV. However many millions the brand spent to run the 60-second spot helped to ensure it reached a substantial audience beyond the telecast and generated a lot of positive buzz for the brand.

Super Bowl LVII in 2023 drew the most viewers in the past five years with 115 million in total, up 16% compared to 2019. Naturally, eyeballs vary depending on the quarter in which an ad appears and whether the game is lopsided.

Like the Grammys, Academy Awards viewership has declined significantly, down 37% in 2023 versus 2019. Yet the Oscars broadcast was one of only seven non-NFL sports programs in the top 100 most-watched TV broadcasts of 2023, making it a still-valuable buy. It remains to be seen whether the current beef between New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers and scheduled Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel has legs that can stretch to March. 

To maximize impact, brands might consider leveraging strategic partnerships with popular platforms such as YouTube AdBlitz to amplify brand creative and achieve even more mass reach. The coupling generated five times the views of the Super Bowl game itself and provided opportunities to reach incremental consumers, aged 18-49 who didn’t see an ad on TV. The most successful YouTube AdBlitz ads during the 2023 Super Bowl garnered anywhere from 11 million to a staggering 140 million views, showcasing the immense reach of the platform. 

Considering the magnitude of pop-culture influence from a tentpole linear TV event through shareable content and the data derived from sentiments, conversation and interactivity, buying ads on these shows is practically a guarantee for return on ad spend. 

Think of it this way: Despite dismal material and the near-universal panning of his performance, the Taylor Swift death-stare meme generated from one of Koy’s jokes about the singer is worth its viralness in gold. At least now everyone knows who he is.

Sunday night was a big night for three television shows as HBO’s Succession, FX’s The Bear, and Netflix’s Beef took home the majority of Golden Globe Awards in the television category during the 81st annual ceremony televised January 7. 

Succession, which ended its four season-run last spring, won four Golden Globes, including the award for best drama series, beating out another HBO series, freshman The Last of Us, as well as Netflix shows The Crown and The Diplomat, and Apple TV Plus’s The Morning Show. The show's third best drama series win ties a Golden Globes record also achieved by The X-Files and Mad Men. 

The series also took home statutes in the Best Male Actor category for Kieran Culkin, Best Female Actor for Sarah Snook, and Best Male Supporting Actor category for Matthew Macfadyen.

The Bear won the best comedy series statuette, while series star Jeremy Allen White was a repeat winner in the competitive Best Performance by a Male Actor in a musical or comedy category, besting Barry’s Bill Hader, Shrinking’s Jason Segel, Ted Lasso’s Jason Sudeikis, and Only Murders in the Building’s Martin Short and Steve Martin.

The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri was a surprise winner in a best performance by a female actor in a musical or comedy category that included last year’s winner, Abbott Elementary’s Quinta Brunson, The Great’s Elle Fanning, Poker Face’s Natasha Lyonne, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s Rachel Brosnahan and Only Murders in the Building’s Selena Gomez. 

Netflix’s The Beef swept the Best Television Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture categories, winning best series, as well as best male and female performances for Steven Yeun and Ali Wong, respectively. 

The Crown’s Elizabeth Debicki was the only other winner in the traditional Golden Globe television categories, taking home the Best Female Supporting Actor statuette for her role as Princess Diana in the Netflix drama series. Ricky Gervais won the Golden Globe in the newly-created Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television category for his Netflix special Armageddon.

CBS has picked up the Golden Globe Awards and will air them Sunday, January 7. NBC aired the Globes earlier this year, but did not air them in 2022 due to the Globes’ parent organization’s lack of diversity and other issues. 

An NFL doubleheader will lead into the 81st Golden Globes on CBS January 7. Paramount Plus will stream the Golden Globes, which goes 8 to 11 p.m. ET and 5 to 8 p.m. PT.  Stations in the Pacific time zone that air the event live will also rebroadcast the telecast in prime. 

“Live entertainment and sports have been, and will always be, a hallmark of CBS, and the Globes adds an exciting new dimension to our first quarter schedule this year,” said George Cheeks, president and chief executive officer of CBS. “The January timing also provides the added benefit of yet another signature platform to promote the return of CBS’ new primetime schedule in February.”

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association hosts the Golden Globes, which celebrate the best in TV and film. Dick Clark Productions produces and owns the event.

The Golden Globe Awards have been sold, and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which gives out the Globes, has shut down. Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge Industries, owned by Todd Boehly, have agreed to buy the Golden Globes. The price was not shared. 

The Golden Globes salute the best in film and television. 

The HFPA was ridiculed for its lack of diversity in a series of stories in the L.A. Times, which reported that the association did not have a single Black member. As a result, NBC cancelled the 2022 Golden Globe Awards telecast. 

The event happened this year, in January, with The Fabelmans winning top drama film and The Banshees of Inisherin getting top comedy film. On the TV side, House of the Dragon won best drama and Abbott Elementary won best comedy.

Members of the HFPA will become employees of a for-profit outfit that has not yet received a name. There are fewer than 100 members, reported the New York Times. 

The Golden Globe Foundation will handle the HFPA’s philanthropic endeavors. 

The 81st Golden Globe Awards is scheduled for January 7, 2024. 

HBO’s The White Lotus and ABC’s Abbott Elementary were multi-award winners in the television category at Tuesday’s 80th annual Golden Globe Awards, which returned to television after a year’s hiatus.

Abbott Elementary took home three Golden Globe Awards, including best comedy series, a best actress in a comedy series award for Quinta Brunson and best supporting actor nod for Tyler James Williams.

The White Lotus won two Golden Globes, including best limited series and best performance by an actress in a limited series for Jennifer Coolidge. 

NBC's live award ceremony telecast, hosted by comedian Jerrod Carmichael, was more subdued compared to past Globes awards ceremonies as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association continues to recover from the controversy surrounding the lack of diversity among its members. As a result of the controversy, the 2022 Golden Globes were not televised.

During the telecast, HFPA President Helen Hoehne said that the beleaguered organization is “grateful” for the support from the industry. The HFPA added 103 new voters to its ranks and is now 52% female and nearly 52% racially and ethnically diverse. 

“This has been a momentous change for our organization and we’re proud of the work we’ve done, the progress we’ve made and the journey we’re on,” Hoehne said. “We will continue to support groups that amplify a variety of voices as we continue to add representation from around the world as we did this past year.”

Other big Golden Globe winners included HBO’s House of the Dragon, which took home the best drama series award, and Kevin Costner, who won the best performance by an actor in a drama series for his role in Paramount Network's Yellowstone.

Producer Ryan Murphy was presented the Golden Globe Carol Burnett Award, while actor Eddie Murphy received the Globe's Cecil B. DeMille Award for career achievement.

In the movie category, The Fabelmans won the Golden Globe for best drama film, while The Banshees of Inisherin won the award for best musical or comedy film. ■

NBC did not air last year’s Golden Globes, in response to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s glaring lack of diversity and other issues, exposed primarily in a Los Angeles Times investigation. The Times reported, among other unsavory details, that none of the HFPA’s then-87 voters was Black.

The HFPA noted that its voting body is now 52% female and 52% racially and ethnically diverse, with 20% Latinx, 12% Asian, 10% Black, and 10% Middle Eastern.

Saluting the best in TV and film, Golden Globes nominations were announced December 12. Best drama is between Better Call Saul on AMC, The Crown and Ozark on Netflix, House of the Dragon on HBO and Severance on Apple TV Plus.

Best comedy is between Abbott Elementary on ABC, FX’s The Bear, HBO Max’s Hacks, Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building and Netflix’s Wednesday.

The Globes have always been a loose, fun affair, compared to the more buttoned up Emmys. Cultique CEO and founder Linda Ong called them “the fun cousin of the awards party.”

A comedian, Carmichael’s credits include the HBO comedy special Rothaniel and NBC comedy The Carmichael Show.

How much do the Golden Globes matter, in light of the host organization’s missteps?

A bit, said Dom Caristi, professor emeritus of communications at Ball State University. “Almost all of the awards shows draw significant audiences — maybe not sizeable like they once were, but large enough to fuel a surge in audience interest in the movies, TV shows and stars that win,” he said. ■

The Golden Globe Awards happens on January 10. NBC airs the event, and Peacock streams it, a year after the network did not air the Globes in response to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s glaring lack of diversity and other issues. 

The 2022 Golden Globes were neither on television nor live-streamed. A year later, one wonders how much the Globes still matter. They’ve long been known as a looser, more spontaneous event than the Emmys — “the fun cousin of the awards party,” Cultique CEO and founder Linda Ong said — where attendees sit at tables and enjoy a few glasses of wine. 

As with any major awards event, the Globes mean prestige and marketing for a winning, or even nominated, star or show. The HFPA often singles out less-heralded properties than the Emmys. Some, such as Brooklyn Nine-Nine getting top comedy in 2014, were unexpected and respected. Some, such as Emily in Paris, nominated for best comedy in 2021, were mocked. 

Dom Caristi, professor emeritus of communications at Ball State University, said the Globes still matter. “Almost all of the awards shows draw significant audiences — maybe not sizeable like they once were, but large enough to fuel a surge in audience interest in the movies, TV shows and stars that win,” he said. 

NBC dropping the Globes in 2022 was a big deal in the industry. Outside of it, Preston Beckman, chairman of media consultancy The Beckman Group, said viewers probably don’t recall that the Globes were not on last year. They’ll tune in this time to see their favorite celebrities in action. 

“It’s three hours of content that will bring people to either my network or my streaming service,” he said. “Period.”

Industry watchers say the emergence of social media platforms gives consumers a direct connection to the stars. So the hunger to see A-listers at the Globes or Emmys is not what it once was. “The shows thrived in the age before social media, when you’d never see talent with their hair down,” said Ong. “Now you can always see that.”

Rebuilding the HFPA 

The Globes got waylaid after a series of reports, including those from the Los Angeles Times, revealed how none of the HFPA’s 87 members were Black. The HFPA added 103 new voters to its ranks. The voters pool is represented by 62 countries. It is 52% female and nearly 52% racially and ethnically diverse. 

NBC believes the HFPA is moving in the right direction. “We recognize the HFPA’s commitment to ongoing change,” said Frances Berwick, chairman, entertainment networks, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, when NBC announced it was back with the Golden Globes in September. 

NBC is committed to 2023’s Globes only. 

Has the HFPA done enough? “They’ve got a long way to go,” said Caristi, “but it’s an improvement.”

‘Succession’ Finds Success

Golden Globes nominations were announced December 12. 

Succession got top drama last year, while Hacks was top comedy. HBO claimed six Golden Globes and Apple TV Plus, Amazon Prime Video, FX, Hulu and Netflix got one apiece. 

Awards events are hardly the draw they used to be, just as nothing on broadcast TV is the draw that it used to be. That so many networks are cranking out quality programming on a range of platforms means the viewer has probably never seen much of what gets awarded on these nights. “Awards shows in general are on a path of diminishing returns,” Ong said, “because tastes have gotten so fragmented.”

Beckman noted that the Globes are primarily about celeb-watching, more than tuning in to see if a favorite show wins. “Most people have not seen the shows and movies they will nominate,” he said. 

A few mass-market movies, such as Top Gun: Maverick, will draw some attention to the Globes. But awards event ratings aren’t likely to pick up again. “It’s going to continue a downward trend, as the younger generation looks at Rotten Tomatoes instead of awards shows to tell them what to watch,” Caristi said. 

For NBC, Ong said the Globes are both an ad-sales vehicle and a promotional platform, so a hefty Nielsen number is less of an issue. As viewers of the Oscars back in March will attest, most anything can happen in a ballroom full of celebrities, especially if there is wine involved — even if no celebrity gets slapped at the Globes. 

“Worst case, nobody talks about it, but NBC pockets the money from advertisers,” Ong said. “Best case, something happens.” ▪️

Best limited series is between Black Bird on Apple TV Plus, Dahmer–Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story on Netflix, The Dropout on Hulu, Pam & Tommy on Hulu and The White Lotus on HBO.

Best actress in a limited series comes down to Jessica Chastain of George & Tammy, Julia Garner of Netflix’s Inventing Anna, Lily James of Pam & Tommy, Julia Roberts in Starz’s Gaslit and Amanda Seyfriend on Hulu’s The Dropout.

Best actor in a limited series includes Taron Egerton of Black Bird, Colin Firth of HBO Max’s The Staircase, Andrew Garfield on FX’s Under the Banner of Heaven, Evan Peters on Dahmer–Monster and Sebastian Stan on Pam & Tommy.

Abbott Elementary led with five nominations, while The Crown, Dahmer-Monster, Only Murders in the Building, Pam & Tommy and The White Lotus have four apiece.

Best actress in a supporting role in a limited or anthology series came down to Jennifer Coolidge in The White Lotus, Claire Danes in Fleishman is in Trouble on FX, Daisy Edgar-Jones in Under the Banner of Heaven, Niecy Nash in Dahmer–Monster and Aubrey Plaza in The White Lotus.

Best supporting actor in a limited role is between F. Murray Abraham in The White Lotus, Domhnall Gleeson in Hulu’s The Patient, Paul Walter Hauser in Black Bird, Richard Jenkins in Dahmer–Monster and Seth Rogen in Pam & Tommy.

Best supporting actress in a comedy or drama is between Elizabeth Debicki of The Crown, Hannah Einbinder on Hacks, Julia Garner on Ozark, Janelle James on Abbott Elementary and Sheryl Lee Ralph on Abbott Elementary.

Best supporting actor in a comedy or drama is between John Lithgow on The Old Man, Jonathan Pryce on The Crown, John Turturro on Severance, Tyler James Williams on Abbott Elementary and Henry Winkler on Barry.

On the movie side, The Banshees of Inisherin has eight nominations, Everything Everywhere All at Once has six, and Babylon and The Fabelmans have five.

Babylon, The Banshees of Inisherin, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery and Triangle of Sadness are up for best comedy or musical film.

Best performance by an actress in a drama is between Cate Blanchett of Tar, Olivia Colman of Empire of Light, Viola Davis in The Woman King, Ana De Armas of Blonde and Michelle Williams of The Fabelmans.

Best actor in a drama comes down to Austin Butler in Elvis, Brendan Fraser in The Whale, Hugh Jackman in The Son, Bill Nighy in Living and Jeremy Pope in The Inspection.

Best actress in a comedy is Lesley Manville in Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris, Margot Robbie in Babylon, Anya Taylor-Joy in The Menu, Emma Thompson in Good Luck to You, Leo Grande and Michelle Yeoh in Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Best actor in a comedy includes Diego Calva in Babylon, Daniel Craig in Glass Onion, Adam Driver in White Noise, Colin Farrell in The Banshees of Inisherin and Ralph Fiennes in The Menu.

Best director includes James Cameron of Avatar: The Way of the Water, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert of Everything Everywhere All at Once, Baz Luhrmann of Elvis, Martin McDonagh of The Banshees of Inisherin and Steven Spielberg of The Fabelmans.

Other categories include best animated movie, best non-English language movie, best supporting actress and actor, best screenplay, best original score and best original song. ■

HBO was the big draw at Sunday’s Critics Choice Awards event, garnering more wins than any other distributor.

The ceremony, simulcast live on TBS and The CW, saw HBO/HBO Max win 10 Critics Choice Awards, topping Netflix’s seven wins and Apple TV Plus’s five statuettes, said the Critics Choice Association. 

Apple TV’s Ted Lasso continued its strong TV awards season, winning four Critics Choice Awards to top all series. The show matched its Emmy Award for best comedy with a Critics Choice win in the category, along with wins for best actor (Jason Sudeikis) best supporting actor (Brett Goldstein) and best supporting actress (Hannah Waddingham).

HBO's Succession added the Critics Choice Award for best drama to its 2022 Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Awards wins in the category. Series stars Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook took home Critics Choice Award statuettes in the best supporting actor and actress categories, respectively. 

Netflix original film The Power of the Dog took home best picture honors, along with a best director statuette for Jane Campion.

HBO’s Succession got the Golden Globe for best drama, while Hacks of HBO Max was named best comedy. 

The Golden Globes salute the best in television and film. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced its winners January 9. NBC has been the longtime broadcast partner for the awards, but pulled out amidst controversy related to the HFPA. The event was not televised this year.

HBO cleaned up on the TV side, claiming six Golden Globes. The others went to Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV Plus, FX, Hulu and Netflix, all with one. 

Succession picked up three Globes. Hacks got two and a host of entrants got one. 

Best drama was between Netflix’s Lupin, Apple TV Plus’s The Morning Show, FX’s Pose, Netflix’s Squid Game and HBO’s Succession.

Best comedy was between The Great on Hulu, Only Murders in the Building on Hulu, Reservation Dogs on FX on Hulu, Ted Lasso on Apple TV Plus and Hacks on HBO Max. 

Best actress in a drama went to Michaela Jae Rodriguez of FX’s Pose. Best actor in a drama is Jeremy Strong of Succession. 

Best actress in a comedy is Jean Smart of Hacks, and actor in a comedy is Jason Sudeikis of Apple TV Plus’s Ted Lasso.

Top limited series is Amazon Prime’s The Underground Railroad.  

Best actress in a limited series went to Kate Winslet of HBO’s Mare of Easttown. Best actor in a limited series went to Michael Keaton of Hulu’s Dopesick. 

Best supporting actress is Sarah Snook from Succession, and best supporting actor is O Yeong-Su of Netflix’s Squid Game. 

Netflix did better on the movie side, leading among distributors with four Globes, ahead of 20th Century Studios/Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures at three. 

Netflix’s The Power of the Dog and West Side Story from 20th Century Studios/Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures each got three Golden Globes. 

The Power of the Dog got top drama among 2021 movies. West Side Story was best musical or comedy. 

Nicole Kidman won best actress in a drama for Being the Ricardos. Will Smith won best actor for King Richard. 

Rachel Zegler won best actress in a musical or comedy for West Side Story, and Andrew Garfield got best actor in the category for Tick, Tick…Boom!

Best animated film went to Encanto, and best non-English movie went to Drive My Car. 

Best supporting actress went to Ariana Debose of West Side Story and best supporting actor was Kodi Smit-Mcphee from The Power of the Dog.

Jane Campion of The Power of the Dog won best director and Kenneth Branagh of Belfast got best screenplay.  

Best original score went to Hans Zimmer of Dune and best original song to “No Time to Die” from Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell. ■ 

Netflix was the big winner at the 78th Golden Globe Awards, bagging top drama with The Crown and best limited series with The Queen’s Gambit, and with those series’ stars racking up prizes too. Schitt’s Creek, which premiered on Pop TV but built a mass audience on Netflix, got top comedy. 

Tina Fey hosted the primetime event from the Rainbow Room in New York and Amy Poehler from the Beverly Hilton, where a collection of vaccinated first responders were in attendance. 

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association awards the Golden Globes, and the consortium took some heat in the weeks leading up to the Feb. 28 affair. That there are but 90 members that vote for the Golden Globes has long made for oddball picks now and then, but the Los Angeles Times also reported that none of the voters are Black. 

Midway through the three-hour production, HFPA brass addressed the criticism. “Just like in film and television, Black representation is vital,” said VP Helen Hoehne. “We must have Black journalists in our organization.”

Black artists were nonetheless well-represented among the winners. The first prize, for supporting actor in a drama film, went to Daniel Kaluuya for his work in HBO Max’s Judas and the Black Messiah, about the battle between the chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party, Fred Hampton, and the FBI. Kaluuya played Hampton. 

Kaluuya’s remote response initially had connectivity issues, setting an ominous tone for the virtual awards. Eventually his words came through. “We’re here to give until we’re empty, and I gave everything,” Kaluuya said. 

John Boyega got the next award, for best supporting actor in a series. He was in the Steve McQueen-directed Small Axe on Amazon. Later on, Chadwick Boseman got best actor in a motion picture drama for his work in Netflix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Boseman died in August, and his widow, Taylor Simone Ledward, spoke on his behalf. “He would say something beautiful,” said an emotional Ledward. “Something inspiring.”

Receiving the Cecil B. DeMille Award, Jane Fonda cited Small Axe and Judas and the Black Messiah, among others, as projects that gave her empathy and opened her mind across this difficult past year. She pushed Hollywood to be more inclusive. “Let’s all of us make an effort to expand that tent so that everyone rises,” said Fonda. 

Norman Lear got the Carol Burnett Award for TV achievement. “He paved the way for all of us who follow,” said Tina Fey of the 98-year-old producer. 

“I’ve never lived alone,” Lear said. “I’ve never laughed alone.”

Catherine O’Hara got best actress in a comedy for her work in Schitt’s Creek and Jason Sudeikis got best actor in a comedy for Apple TV Plus’s Ted Lasso. 

Best actor in a limited series went to Mark Ruffalo of HBO’s I Know This Much Is True and best actress in a limited series went to Anya Taylor-Joy of Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit. 

The Queen’s Gambit got best limited series. 

Best actress in a drama went to Emma Corrin of Netflix’s The Crown, Corrin beating out Olivia Colman from the same series. Corrin plays Princess Diana. Best actor in a drama stuck with The Crown, as Josh O’Connor got the prize. He plays Prince Charles. 

The show was again saluted when Gillian Anderson got best supporting actress for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher. 

Best TV drama went to, yes, The Crown, beating out HBO’s Lovecraft Country, Disney Plus’s The Mandalorian and Netflix’s Ozark and Ratched. 

Upon getting best TV comedy for Schitt’s Creek, Eugene Levy called the award “a lovely vote of confidence in the messages the show stands for,” such as inclusion. Schitt’s won against Netflix’s Emily in Paris, HBO Max’s The Flight Attendant, Hulu’s The Great and Apple TV Plus’s Ted Lasso. 

Netflix, ‘Borat’ Rack Up Wins

Netflix did well in terms of the movie awards. Its The Trial of the Chicago 7 won best screenplay and Rosamund Pike won best actress in a comedy for I Care a Lot.

Best actor in a motion picture comedy went to Sacha Baron Cohen for Amazon’s Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. He joked that Donald Trump was contesting the result amidst reports of dead people voting. 

Borat then took best comedy movie. “This movie couldn’t have been possible without my co-star,” Cohen said. “I’m talking, of course, about Rudy Giuliani.”

Andra Day got best actress in a motion picture drama for her work in The United States vs. Billie Holliday.

Best motion picture drama was given to Nomadland (which, like Billie Holliday, is on Hulu). Director Chloé Zhao called the film “a pilgrimage through grief and healing.”

“We don’t say goodbye,” Zhao added. “We say, see you down the road.” 

Amazon Prime's Fleabag continued its strong TV awards season, winning the Golden Globe award for best comedy series while series star Phoebe Waller-Bridge took home the Globe for best actress in a comedy series.

Fleabag, which won the Emmy Award for best comedy series in September, beat out HBO's Barry, Netflix's The Kominsky Method and The Politician, and Amazon's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Waller-Bridge also repeated her Emmy Award win for best actress in a comedy with a Golden Globes win in the same category. She won the Globe award over competitors Christina Applegate (Dead to Me), Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Kirsten Dunst (On Becoming a God in Central Florida) and Natasha Lyonne (Russian Doll).

Also on the comedy front, Ramy Youssef won the Golden Globes Award for best actor in comedy for his role in Hulu's comedy series Ramy.

Facebook will offer the exclusive live stream of pre-show events for the 75th Annual Golden Globe Awards.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association and dick clark productions said that the official Red Carpet pre-show will livestream exclusively on Facebook from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. (ET) on Sunday (Jan. 7). Other exclusive Red Carpet and backstage content will stream on Facebook and Instagram.

The Golden Globe Awards will air live coast-to-coast on NBC from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. (ET).

“We’re thrilled to partner with Facebook and give viewers a front row seat to the red carpet that can’t be found anywhere else,” said HFPA president Meher Tatna. “We hope to enhance the overall viewing experience so fans at home can feel they’re enjoying the show alongside their favorite stars at Hollywood’s biggest party of the year.”

The HFPA Presents: Globes Red Carpet Live, the two-hour pre-show produced by dick clark productions in association with the HFPA, will livestream exclusively on Facebook from the red carpet at the Beverly Hilton. The show will feature interviews with celebrities and Facebook and Instagram content to bring fans into Golden Globes action throughout the night.

Hosts for the pre-show include AJ Gibson, Jeannie Mai, Scott Mantz and Laura Marano.

The @Instagram Story, with 229 million followers will be hosted by Marano on Golden Globes Sunday. Further expanding upon red carpet content, Facebook 360 videos will be captured from the red carpet and throughout the pre-show, offering the Facebook community a chance to explore immersive videos on the Golden Globes Facebook page.

“Facebook has had a long collaborative relationship with the entertainment community, and we’re thrilled to be able to extend that through our work with the Golden Globes,” said Sibyl Goldman, head of entertainment partnerships at Facebook. “We always aim to create unique experiences which bring communities together, and partaking in the kickoff of award season in conjunction with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, is a demonstration of our commitment to bring fans together through entertainment they enjoy.”

Backstage, winners and presenters will step into the official Instagram immersive studio experience shot by photographer Ramona Rosales (@ramona_rosales). The exclusive video and photo content will be posted to @GoldenGlobes on Instagram in real time with behind-the-scenes moments shared on stories. Additionally, the HFPA will incorporate a community driven Q&A into the backstage press room, where select questions will be sourced via Facebook and streamed live on the Golden Globes Facebook page.

HBO, Showtime and FX drew the most network nominations for the 72nd annual Golden Globe Awards, which also gave a big nod to freshman shows.

Overall HBO garnered 15 nominations, followed by a Showtime-record nine Golden Globe Awards nods, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced during a Thursday morning ceremony.

FX drew eight nominations followed by over-the-top streaming service Netflix’s seven.

FX’s mini-series Fargo was the most nominated show with five, followed by HBO’s True Detective with four. Showtime’s House Of Cards and The Affair, CBS’ The Good Wife, HBO’s The Normal Heart and Olive Kitteridge, and Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black all garnered three nominations.

Over-the-top streaming service Amazon Prime's comedy Transparent was among several freshman series to garner multiple Golden Globe nominations. Transparent drew nods for best comedy series -- where it will vie with fellow freshman shows Silicon Valley (HBO) and Jane The Virgin (The CW), along with HBO’s Girls and Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black – as well as a best comedy actor performance nod for Jeffrey Tambor.

Louis CK (FX’s Louie); Don Cheadle (Showtime’s House Of Lies); Rickey Gervais (Netflix’s Derek); and William H. Macy (Showtime’s Shameless) will battle Tambor for the best drama actor statuette.

Showtime’s rookie series The Affair (pictured) will take on PBS’ Downton Abbey, HBO’s Game Of Thrones, CBS’ The Good Wife and Netflix’s House Of Cards in the best drama series category.

Cable networks swept nominations in the best actor and actress in a mini-series or motion picture made for television categories.
