New HBO programming head Casey Bloys will shepherd an impressive stable of scripted dramas, comedies, original movies and specials — the envy of most content distributors across virtually all distribution platforms — but he also has some holes to fill going forward.

Bloys replaces former president of programming Michael Lombardo. Under Lombardo, HBO last year racked up the greatest Emmy Awards performance in history, taking home a network record 43 of them in September, including a record haul of 12 for signature series Game of Thrones.

Bloys, who is also overseeing documentaries, films, sports and Cinemax programming, is in command of an upcoming slate HBO hopes will continue to thrive against emerging powers Netf lix, Amazon and Hulu along with more conventionally distributed rivals such as Showtime, Starz and FX.

With Game of Thrones winding down — it’s signed for another season and likely to have an eighth season, too, but showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss intimate the end is near — industry observers have wondered what HBO has cooking in terms of potential replacements.

High-profile springtime newcomer Vinyl, from creators Mick Jagger and Martin Scorsese and starring Bobby Cannavale and Ray Romano, failed to live up to the hype, although it will return for one more go-round.

Vinyl averaged 4.3 million viewers across multiple plays and screens, according to HBO. Juggernaut Game of Thrones, by contrast, averaged 7.8 million viewers for its May 22 episode.

Sources close to the network say Bloys — who focused mostly on comedy series, late night and specials projects at HBO before adding drama series when executive vice president Michael Ellenberg left earlier in the year — already has his hands on a number of high-profile projects scheduled for this year. They include 1970s porn-themed The Deuce, from producer David Simon (The Wire, Treme); and an adapation of Westworld from Star Trek and Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams.

Comedies Insecure from Issa Rae and Vice Principals, starring Danny McBride, are also in the queue, and drama series The Leftovers will continue with a third and final season.

Lombardo — credited with reviving HBO after a post-Sopranos creative slump with such shows as Boardwalk Empire, True Blood, True Detective and Girls — moves into a production role and will develop projects for the network.

His departure, after more than 30 years at the Time Warner Inc.-owned programmer, hit the trades the afternoon of Friday, May 20. The appointment of Bloys was announced May 23.

HBO chairman and CEO Richard Plepler praised Lombardo in a statement: “It goes without saying that Mike’s contributions over these many years, most especially in the last nine as president of programming, have been nothing short of extraordinary.”

Along with Ellenberg’s departure, HBO in December named longtime executive Peter Nelson as executive vice president of HBO Sports, replacing Ken Hershman, who had resigned a month prior.

HBO Wednesday (Jan. 6) made it official that it has greenlit a sixth and final season of comedy series Girls.

The series, created and produced by Lena Dunham, will launch its fifth season on Feb. 21, according to network officials.

Earlier in the week reports surfaced that the series, about the lives of a group of women in their 20’s, would end its run after a sixth season. Girls is executively produced by Dunham, Judd Apatow, Jenni Konner, Ilene S. Landress, Murray Miller and Bruce Eric Kaplan.

 “Lena Dunham and her brilliant collaborators, including Judd Apatow and Jenni Konner, have given HBO a signature series of rare wit and intelligence,” Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming. “They are exceptional talents, and I can’t wait to see what Lena, Jenni and Judd have in store for the final seasons of this unique show, and look forward to working with them on future projects.”

Added Dunham: “I can’t imagine a more fulfilling creative experience than Girls. The freedom and support that HBO has given Jenni, Judd and me is something rare and beautiful. The commitment and originality of our actors has been stunning, and our crew is truly my family. I conceived of Girls when I was 23 and now I’m nearly 30 – the show has quite perfectly spanned my 20s, the period of time that it’s about – and so it feels like the right time to wrap our story up. We look forward to creating a sixth season that will honor our amazing cast, crew and fans. And in the Girls universe, nothing ever ends too neatly.”

HBO series Vinyl, a bawdy look at the music business at the intersection of disco, rap and punk rock, will premiere Feb. 14 in the Sunday-9 p.m. slot. The premiere will fill two hours.

Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter is Vinyl's showrunner and, along with Martin Scorsese, Mick Jagger, Rick Yorn, Victoria Pearman, Emma Tillinger Koskoff, John Melfi and Allen Coulter, is also executive producer.

Vinyl has a 10-episode first season. HBO describes it as “a ride through the sex- and drug-addled music business at the dawn of punk, disco and hip-hop … seen through the eyes of a record label president, Richie Finestra, played by Bobby Cannavale.”

A week later, comedy pair Girls and Togetherness debut, starting at 10 p.m. on Feb. 21. Read more at broadcastingcable.com.

Separately, HBO announced it has canceled the Jack Black-Tim Robbins comedy series The Brink.

HBO's Emmy-winning comedy series Girls has been renewed for a fifth sesason nearly a week before its fourth season premiere.

The Lena Dunham-produced series will debut its fourth season this Sunday (Jan. 11.)

The series, which follows a close knit group of four New York City-based friends, just last month was nominated for two Golden Globe Awards, including best comedy as well as a best acrtress in a comedy nod for Dunham.

The Golden Globe Awards ceremony will air this Sunday on NBC.

As the Golden Globe nominations were announced this morning, celebrities are taking to Twitter and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to voice their honors for the upcoming Jan. 11 show.

Netflix has partnered with producer/actor Judd Apatow on a new Netflix original series set to premiere in 2016.

Love, which stars Paul Rust (Inglorious Basterds) and Gillian Jacobs (Community, Girls), will take an honest take on modern relationships, according to Netflix officials. The OTT service has greenlit two seasons of Love, with the first debuting in 2016 with 10 episodes and the second in 2017 with 12 episodes.

Apatow Productions and Legendary Television will produce half-hour comedy series, with Brent Forrester (The Office, The Simpsons) serving as executive producer.

“Judd Apatow has a unique comedic voice that manages to be delightful, insightful, and shockingly frank -- often at the same time,” said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos in a statement. “Together with Paul and Lesley, he’s bringing a whole new level of agony and ecstasy to this modern day comedy of manners.”
