This weekend’s lineup of live TV sports telecasts begins on the baseball field as the World Baseball Classic continues with games on Saturday and Sunday.

Team USA will take the field for the international baseball tournament on Saturday against Great Britain on Fox and on Sunday against Mexico on FS1. Overall Fox, FS1 and FS2 will air 15 World Baseball Classic games over the weekend.

On the NBA court, ABC on Saturday will air a primetime game between the Milwaukee Bucks and the Golden State Warriors, and ESPN on Sunday will televise the N.Y. Knicks-L.A. Lakers contest. 

On the racetrack, Fox on Sunday will air the NASCAR Cup United Rentals Work United 500 race. On the ice, ABC on Saturday will televise the Philadelphia Flyers-Pittsburgh Penguins game, while on Sunday TNT will air the N.Y. Rangers-Pittsburgh Penguins matchup.

March Madness will officially kick off Sunday with CBS’ live airing of the NCAA Men’s college basketball tournament selection show, and ESPN’s live telecast of the Women’s college basketball tournament selection show. 

The XFL tees up week four of its inaugural pro football season Saturday with an FX doubleheader featuring the Houston Roughnecks-Orlando Guardians and San Antonio Brahmas-Seattle Sea Dragons games. On Sunday, ESPN2 will air the Arlington Renegades-St. Louis Battlehawks and the Vegas Vipers-D.C. Defenders contests.

On the soccer field, Peacock and USA will air nine Premier League soccer games over the weekend. In the ring, Showtime will air the Tim Tszu-Tony Harrison junior middleweight title fight.■ 

This weekend’s lineup of TV sports events begins at arguably the biggest sporting event of the year, Super Bowl LVI. NBC’s telecast of Sunday’s NFL Championship matchup between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Los Angeles Rams is expected to be the most watched television event of 2022.

Following the Super Bowl, NBC will air live coverage of the 2022 Winter Olympics, part of the NBC Sports’ weekend-long coverage of the games across such networks as USA Network and CNBC. The full schedule of Olympics events can be found here.

In other weekend sports action, ABC will continue its Saturday night primetime NBA telecasts with live coverage of the Los Angeles Lakers-Golden State Warriors game. The network on Sunday afternoon will televise the Atlanta Hawks-Boston Celtics contest. 

On the soccer field, NBC and Peacock will offer Saturday morning Premier League coverage, while FS2 on Saturday begins Club World Cup coverage. On the links, CBS and the Golf Channel will offer weekend coverage of the PGA Phoenix Open golf tournament. 

ESPN Plus will distribute the UFC 271 pay-per-view mixed martial arts event featuring a main event rematch between middleweights Israel Adesanya and Robert Whittaker. In the squared ring, DAZN will carry live the Daniel Jacobs-John Ryder super middleweight boxing match.

Saturday’s college basketball schedule features top-ranked Auburn battles Texas A&M on ESPN, second-ranked Gonzaga takes on No. 22 Saint Mary’s on ESPN2, and fourth-ranked Arizona travels to play Washington on Pac 12 Network. Other games include No. 5 Kentucky-Florida (ESPN) No. 6 Houston-Memphis (ABC), No. 7 Duke-Boston College (ACC Network), No. 8 Kansas-Oklahoma (CBS), No. 9 Texas Tech-TCU (Big 12 Network) and No. 10 Baylor-No. 20 Texas (ESPN2). On Sunday, third-ranked Purdue faces Maryland on CBS.

This weekend’s lineup of live sports content on television begins in Tokyo with NBCUniversal’s Summer Olympics coverage. Linear television networks USA, NBCSN, NBC and CNBC will team to offer live coverage in such sports as softball, swimming, tennis, soccer and beach volleyball, skateboarding and water polo. Beyond the Olympics, CBS will offer final round coverage of the 3M Open PGA golf tournament, while Golf Channel will feature the Amundi Evian Championship LPGA tour event. 

ESPN Saturday will present a UFC Fight Night card featuring a main event bantamweight fight between Cory Sandhagen and TJ Dillashaw.

On the soccer field, FS1 and FS2 will televise quarterfinal round action of CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament. On Saturday, FS2 will televise the Qatar-El Salvador match, while FS1 offers the Mexico-Honduras game. On Sunday, team USA is in action against Jamaica on FS1, while Costa Rica meets Canada, also airing on FS1. Also, ABC will air a Saturday afternoon MLS game between Columbus and Atlanta.

ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball telecast will originate from Milwaukee as the Brewers host the Chicago White Sox in an interleague matchup. 

Fox Sports said Mark Silverman, currently president of the Big Ten Network joint venture, will become president, National Networks, adding responsibilities at the Fox broadcast network, FS1 and FS2.

The role was previously held by Jamie Horowitz, who reportedly was fired in July following allegations of sexual harassment after two years on the job.

Eric Shanks, president and executive producer, Fox Sports, said in a release that Silverman “is an excellent, creative executive who has been in the Fox Sports family for over 11 years with great success. We couldn’t be more thrilled he has chosen to take this new role on our team.”

Fox said Silverman, as of Jan. 16, will oversee all programming, production, marketing and digital for Fox, FS1 and FS2 live events and studio shows while retaining responsibilities at BTN, which is co-owned by the Big Ten Conference. He has headed BTN since the beginning, in 2007, and led it to top the 60-million subscriber mark in the U.S. and Canada.

Fox Sports indicated Silverman's new role, which includes activities at the broadcast network, is broader than Horowitz's portfolio was.

“Mark’s been a creative and trusted leader at BTN for more than a decade,” Big Ten Conference commissioner Jim Delany said in the Fox Sports statement. “I have no doubt that Fox Sports’s national networks will all benefit as a result of Mark’s special combination of executive skills. We look forward to continue to work with him in this new role.”

Silverman said: “I have greatly enjoyed leading BTN for the past 11 years. I now look forward to joining the Fox Sports leadership team and working with some of the top brands and executives in the industry.”

Silverman started out in media at The Walt Disney Co., where before joining BTN he was senior VP and general manager of the ABC Cable Networks Group. Earlier he was senior VP and general manager of ABC Family Channel.

Fox Sports has signed up for Nielsen’s National Out-of-Home reporting service, which counts people watching ballgames on TV in bars, hotels and other locations.

The ratings lift a game can get by adding out-of-home viewers can be significant. Nielsen said Fox NFL regular-season games saw a 16% lift from out-of-home viewing last season.

Fox, ESPN and some other TV companies are negotiating to add out-of-home viewers to the eyeballs they sell to advertisers in the current upfront market. ESPN was the first to subscribe to the Nielsen out-out-of-home reporting service when it launched in April.

The multi-year agreement covers Fox Sports on broadcast, FS1, FS2 and Fox Deportes with program and commercial ratings ranging from live to live plus 7 days of delayed viewing.

“Sports are being watched everywhere, every day and on every type of screen. Our business has to keep pace with changes in viewer behavior,” said Eric Shanks, president, chief operating officer and executive producer, Fox Sports.

As a prelude to its upcoming coverage of the Women's World Cup from Canada next year, Fox Sports will present all of the CONCACAF qualifiers, kicking off in mid-October.

All told, the English-language rights-holder in the U.S. to FIFA properties from 2015 through 2022 will present all 16 matches, including those involving the top-ranked American.side, which was the runner-up to Japan in FIFA' 2011 tournament. This will mark the first time that the entire CONCACAF Women's Championship will be televised, with matches airing live on Fox Sports 1 and 2, as well as streamed live and on-demand via Fox Soccer2Go and Fox Sports Go.

The top three of the eight CONCACAF squads -- North America (United States, Mexico), Central America (Guatemala, Costa Rica) and the Caribbean (Haiti, Martinique, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago) -- move onto the 2015 Women's World Cup. Canada as the host nation already has a berth and is not part of this competition.

“We are very excited about the opportunity to showcase some of the best in women’s soccer,” said Fox Sports executive producer, FIFA World Cup on Fox, David Neal. “Our dedication to the growth of this sport in America has never been more evident than by the extraordinary coverage we have on tap for this year’s CONCACAF Women’s Championship.”

The action starts Oct. 15 with doubleheader live from Kansas City’s Sporting Park on FS2 as Guatemala takes on Haiti at 6 p.m. (ET), followed at 8:30 p.m. by the U.S. Women’s National Team opener against Trinidad and Tobago live on the network.  An encore is scheduled for FS1 later that night.

The Mexican women’s national team kicks off its World Cup qualifying hopes one day later, against Costa Rica at 8:30 p.m. on FS2.

The U.S., which stumbled to Mexico back in 2010 and had to take a circuitous route to qualify for the 2011 World Cup, headlines the FS1 action on Friday, Oct. 17 facing Guatemala live from Toyota Park in Chicago at 9 p.m. (ET) Abby Wambach, Alex Morgan and netminder Hope Solo, who is expected to play despite a pending domestic violence case, conclude their qualifying matches live against Haiti in Washington D.C.’s RFK Stadium on Monday, Oct. 20 on FS1 at 7:30 p.m.

The semifinals are on tap on Friday, Oct. 25, trailed by the third-place match and final on Sunday, Oct. 26,  both live on FS1. Pregame coverage begins in-studio before each USWNT match 30 minutes prior to kickoff. See below for the complete schedule.
