The return of FX’s drama series Justified highlights the list of original series debuting this week

Justified: City Primeval debuts July 18 and returns Timothy Olyphant to the role of Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens. The series, an extension of the Justified drama series that ran on FX from 2010-2015, follows Givens as he travels to Detroit to pursue an elusive killer, according to the network. 

Debuting July 23 is Paramount Plus’ Special Ops: Lioness, a new drama from prolific series creator Taylor Sheridan. The military-themed series stars Zoe Saldana, Laysla De Oliveira, Nicole Kidman and Morgan Freeman.

Freeform’s final season of Grown-ish and the third season of Netflix’s The Witcher highlight the light list of show debuts heading into the July 4 holiday week.

Grown-ish -- a spinoff of ABC's Black-ish, will debut its sixth and final season on Freeform June 28. Grown-ish stars Yara Shahidi and Marcus Scribner will return for the show’s final season along with Trevor Jackson, Diggy Simmons and Daniella Perkins.

Netflix will return its fantasy drama series The Witcher for its third season on June 29. The show will star Henry Cavill in his last season as the show’s lead character Geralt of Rivia (Liam Hemsworth will take over the role in season four). The eight-episode, third season of The Witcher will be split in two parts, with the second half premiering in late July, according to the streamer.

The final-season debut of Netflix’s Never Have I Ever and the return of Freeform’s mystery/thriller series Cruel Summer highlight a busy show-premiere schedule for the first full week of June. 

The Mindy Kaling-created Never Have I Ever will return June 8 for its fourth and final season as it continues to follow the complicated life of a modern-day, first-generation Indian-American teenage girl who, along with her friends, is navigating her senior year of high school. The series stars Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Poorna Jagannathan, Richa Moorjani, Jaren Lewison and Darren Barnet.

Debuting June 5 is the second season of Cruel Summer, Freeform’s young-adult-targeted anthology drama series. Much like the series’ first season, the show’s sophomore campaign will revolve around an incident that affects the lives of two main characters over a three-year span.

Sadie Stanley and Lexi Underwood star in the 10-episode series.

Valentine’s Day, fittingly enough, is the premiere day for a couple of dating shows. On Freeform, there’s Love Trip: Paris, which sees four American women, “unlucky in love in their own country,” according to Freeform, move into a penthouse in Paris to meet some French men. “Is this love trip to Paris their one-way ticket to romance, or are they headed for heartbreak in another language?” added the network. 

On Netflix, there’s Perfect Match. Hosted by Nick Lachey, the show brings together singles from a range of unscripted shows on Netflix, including Love Is Blind, The Ultimatum, Too Hot To Handle and The Mole. 

Love Trip: Paris comes from Fox Alternative Entertainment and is executive produced by Susan House. Matt Rogers narrates. 

The contestants are Caroline, a personal trainer in New York; Rose, a Boston real estate agent; Lacy, a Nashville-based podcaster; and Josielyn, a model in Los Angeles.

Two episodes air on premiere day. 

A Daily Beast review noted that the four contestants include a lesbian, a “sexually fluid” woman and another who is trans and bisexual. “It’s beyond thrilling to see these women treated with love and respect, and not have to make their queerness a traumatic focal point of all of their experiences on the show,” the review said. “Love Trip: Paris transcends token casting and exploitation and instead sets up a safe and amiable environment for its cast. In a television landscape where reality dating competitions tip almost entirely cisgender and heterosexual, it’s exhilarating to watch these women navigate Paris and all of its sexy sweethearts while out and proud.” 

Meanwhile, over on Netflix, Perfect Match is set in a tropical paradise. The contestants compete to form relationships, with the most compatible couples playing matchmaker — breaking up other couples and sending them on dates with brand-new singles. 

“Will they create better matches, or will they create chaos?” Netflix wonders. 

There are a dozen Perfect Match episodes. 

Sticking with Daily Beast reviews of current dating series, it said: “For the most part, Perfect Match is about what one would expect: Singles from various Netflix shows gather together to mix, mingle, and pair off before the end of each night. Anyone left without a match must go home. Each week, paired matches will compete in ‘Compatibility Challenges’ that determine who has the power to send any two players on a date with someone not yet living in the villa. In the end, only one pair can be the ‘Perfect Match.’ ” ■

The Watchful Eye, a mystery drama from Ryan Seacrest, debuts on Freeform Monday, January 30. The show follows Elena, a young woman with what Freeform calls “a complicated past,” who is a nanny for an affluent family in Manhattan. “She quickly learns that everyone in the mysterious building has deadly secrets and ulterior motives. What they don't know, however, is that Elena has some shocking secrets of her own,” Freeform said. 

Two episodes air on premiere night, and all 10 are on Hulu January 31. 

Mariel Molino, Warren Christie, Amy Acker, Jon Ecker, Aliyah Royale and Lex Lumpkin are in the cast. 

Seacrest executive produces with Emily Fox, Nina Wass, Andrea Shay and Jeffrey Reiner. Fox is the showrunner. Julie Durk created the show and is a consultant on it. 

Fox likened the series to a puzzle at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour. “It's not just a whodunit,” she said. “All the different pieces need to be assembled over the course of the series. And it's a chess game, and it has a lot of different moving parts.”

Molino spoke about her Elena character at press tour. “I was really interested in the duplicity of her character and the mask that she presents with the family in The Greybourne and the two sides of her that she has to juggle because, as we find out, she's kind of working a grift, and there's something going on that we don't quite know,” she said. “For me, it was really fun to kind of figure out, okay, who is the real Elena?”

PASADENA, CALIF. — Freeform will bring back its Black-ish spinoff series Grown-ish for a sixth season, the network announced Wednesday during its Television Critics Association Winter press tour session.

The Emmy-nominated show starring Marcus Scribner and Yara Shahidi launches the second half of its fifth season January 18, and continues to follow the exploits of Andre Johnson Jr. (Scribner) as he becomes more popular at his college campus with help from his sister (Shahidi,) according to network officials.

Along with Scribner and Shahidi, the series stars Trevor Jackson, Diggy Simmons and Daniella Perkins. Grown-ish is executive produced by Shahidi, Kenya Barris, Zakiyyah Alexander, Courtney Lilly, Craig Doyle, Anthony Anderson, Laurence Fishburne, Helen Sugland, E. Brian Dobbins and Michael Petok.

Freeform also announced that it has picked up Love Trip: Paris, which will debut February 14. The unscripted dating series follows four American girls who move to a penthouse in the middle of Paris to find French suitors waiting to date them, according to the network.

Cable networks and streaming services will ring in the Halloween season this October with a number of new original scripted series and movies that will look to thrill audiences throughout the month.

Networks like Epix and Showtime along with such streaming services as Prime Video and Netflix and will roll out horror-themed original programming shows that premiere alongside a multitude of Halloween-themed, network programming stunts that celebrate the spooky season, from Freeform’s “31 Nights of Halloween” to Peacock's “Halloween Horror” film collection.

Also slated to premiere this month are the final episodes of AMC’s zombie-themed The Walking Dead series (October 2), the second season premiere of Syfy’s Chucky (October 5) and 11th season premiere of FX’s Emmy-winning American Horror Story (October 19).

TV industry analyst Marc Berman says the television industry has embraced the Halloween season as more viewers tune into scary and horror programming as an escape from the struggles of everyday life. 

“If you go back in history, Halloween has always been celebrated on television, but that celebration keeps getting bigger and bigger,” Berman said. “Viewers just love Halloween, and considering the world that we live in and all the Hell we are going through with everything, it’s just a great escape, and television continues to celebrate it.”

The first four episodes of The Come Up air September 13 on Freeform, followed by two episodes a week. The show follows six young creatives in downtown New York as they pursue love, art and friendship on their own terms. They work in modeling, fashion, photography, acting and nightlife.

Cast members are Taofeek Abijako, Fernando Casablancas, Sophia Wilson, Ebon Gore, Claude Shwartz and Ben Hard.

The Come Up is produced by Cousins. Megan Sanchez-Warner is the showrunner, and Jessica Chermayeff, Ana Veselic and Anne Alexander executive produce. Chermayeff and Veselic direct.

The finale airs September 27. All episodes turn up on Hulu the day after their premiere. ■

HBO Max will bring back its original teen horror series Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin for a second season.

The Warner Bros. Television and Alloy Entertainment-produced series, which ended its freshman season run last month, takes place 20 years after the events of the original Pretty Little Liars series. The original series ran on Freeform from 2010 to 2017. A new generation of teen girls find themselves taunted by an unknown assailant and made to pay for  the secret sin committed by their parents two decades ago, as well as their own sins, according to the streaming service.

The ensemble cast includes Bailee Madison, Chandler Kinney, Zaria, Malia Pyles, Maia Reficco, Mallory Bechtel and Sharon Leal. The series is executive produced by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Lindsay Calhoon Bring, along with I. Marlene King, Michael Grassi, Caroline Baron, Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo.

 The much-anticipated debut of Prime Video's The Lord of Rings: The Rings of Power original series leads a light schedule of show premieres for the Labor Day holiday week.

The series, which premieres September 1 at 9 pm (ET) on the streaming service, is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings films, and  follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth, according to Prime Video. 

The streaming service will debut the first two episodes of  the series, with the remaining episodes streaming on a weekly basis.

The return of two high-profile, Emmy-nominated cable series highlights a busy summer week of original show premieres.

FX’s comedy series What We Do In The Shadows debuts its fourth season July 12 with the first of 10 new episodes for the vampire-themed show. The series, which stars Kayvan Novak, Matt Berry, Natasia Demetriou and Mark Proksch, has already been renewed for a fifth and sixth season, according to the network.

Debuting July 11 is the first of the final six episodes of the Emmy-winning AMC series Better Call Saul. The series, a spinoff of AMC’s Breaking Bad series, will feature appearances from Bad stars Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul. Better Call Saul stars Bob Odenkirk.

Comedian Phoebe Robinson portrays a successful but broke podcast star in the new trailer for Freeform's new comedy series Everything's Trash, premiering July 13.

The series follows a 30-something outspoken podcast star (Robinson) making her professional mark while living a broke and delightfully messy life in Brooklyn when she is forced to change her ways after her "perfect" older brother launches a political campaign, said the network.

The series also stars Jordan Carlos, Toccarra Cash, Nneka Okafor and Moses Storm. Robinson serves as executive producer alongside co-executive producers Jose Acevedo and Chioke Nassor. ■

HBO Max will debut its reimagining of the young adult-targeted Pretty Little Liars drama series on July 28, according to a new trailer released Wednesday.

The series, Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, takes place 20 years after the events of the original Pretty Little Liars series – which ran on Freeform from 2010-2017 – in which a series of tragic events almost ripped the fictional blue-collar town of Millwood apart, according to the streaming service. Now, in present day, a disparate group of teen girls find themselves tormented by an unknown Assailant and made to pay for the secret sin committed by their parents two decades ago, as well as their own, said HBO Max.

The series stars Bailee Madison, Chandler Kinney, Zaria, Malia Pyles, and Maia Reficco, as well as Mallory Bechtel, Sharon Leal, Elena Goode, Lea Salonga, Eric Johnson, and Alex Aiono.

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin executive producers include I. Marlene King, who developed the original Pretty Little Liars, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Lindsay Calhoon Bring, Michael Grassi, Caroline Baron, Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo. Few programming executives over the past year have had as golden a touch as Freeform and Onyx Collective president Tara Duncan.

From overseeing the summer 2021 debut of Freeform’s most-watched series ever in Cruel Summer to winning a 2022 Oscar for Best Documentary Feature in March for Onyx Collective’s Summer of Soul — produced by musician Questlove — Duncan is pushing all the right buttons, as she has throughout her career.

Duncan’s brand is already synonymous with some of the most iconic shows in the history of television, including Orange Is the New Black, Bosch and The Killing, and she hopes to continue to successfully create content while opening the doors for other diverse voices to make their mark on the industry. 

Duncan grew up in Southern California as a rabid television viewer, but she couldn’t see herself building a career in the industry. It wasn’t until one of her favorite TV shows was canceled that she began to understand there was more to the business than what was on-screen.  

“I was such a big fan of My So-Called Life, so when they canceled it I wrote a letter to ABC demanding that it be put back on,” she said. “So I guess in some way I was aware that there were some decision-makers behind the scenes, but I never really saw myself as someone who would be in that position.”

As a high school senior, Duncan interned at ABC through her participation in the cable industry’s Emma L. Bowen Foundation diversity organization. She recalled being an avid General Hospital fan and having the opportunity to do some extra work on the show as an intern. 

“It was the Emma Bowen Foundation that really provided the access and opportunity to get into the business,” she said. “Even though I really wanted to work in the movies, I always had a track to be in television.”

After graduating from Loyola Marymount University and working a stint at production company Section Eight — founded by George Clooney and Steven Soderbergh — Duncan moved to New York City in 2005. She worked for HBO before taking a production job at AMC. 

“It was still the early days of building the original series slate over there at AMC,” she recalled. “My first day I watched the pilot for Breaking Bad, which was the new show that the network was going to be putting on the air.”

Plunged Into Streaming

It would be the lure of a new distribution platform that would draw Duncan away from the cable industry and toward the streaming services, where her production fingerprints are on a number of iconic series. At Amazon’s Prime Video, she produced the pilot for the service’s first drama series Bosch. As a Netflix creative executive, she oversaw the development of Orange Is the New Black and Narcos, and at Hulu she is developing an adaptation of Zakiya Dalila Harris’s novel The Other Black Girl as part of a 2020 development deal. 

“With the streamers, you can make more programming for more types of audiences because you’re not as beholden to a linear schedule,” she said. “Especially for where I was in my career, it provided me with the opportunity to just dive in and actually get my hands dirty.” 

Duncan’s ascent up the content production ranks was aided by a number of powerful, female mentors that she says has helped her achieve her career goals, including HBO executive VP of comedy programming Amy Gravitt, Amazon Studios programming executive Christina Wayne, former Netflix programming executive Cindy Holland and Walt Disney Television entertainment chairman Dana Walden. 

“When I first started working with the Hulu Originals team, Craig Erwich told me I had to meet Tara Duncan, who had an overall deal at the time with Hulu, because I was going to love her,” Walden said. “He told me she has amazing taste and fantastic relationships in the creative community. He was exactly right. 

“As soon as we had a president-level role available, Tara was my first call,” Walden continued. “Her sensibilities are exactly right for our young adult brand, Freeform: Her first series out of the gate, Cruel Summer, was the biggest series debut in the network’s history. And given that she hand-picked Summer of Soul, which went on to win an Oscar, to be the inaugural piece of content for Onyx Collective, I’d say we got the perfect leader for that team,as well.”

Along with continuing to build on Freeform’s youth-targeted brand and to provide quality, diverse content for the one-year-old, Hulu-centric Onyx Collective, Duncan hopes to serve as a mentor herself to the next generation of diverse content creators seeking to tell their stories onscreen. 

“I would love to be a positive influence for another generation of executives who are coming in,” Duncan said. ■

Freeform has ordered a fifth season of comedy Grown-ish. The show follows Zoey, played by Yara Shahidi, at college.

Grown-ish is a spinoff of Black-ish, which began its eighth and final season on ABC in January. 

Black-ish star Marcus Scribner will be on Grown-ish, reprising his Andre Johnson Jr. role.  

Zakiyyah Alexander and Courtney Lilly, executive producer and showrunner on Black-ish, will be the co-showrunners on Grown-ish.

Episodes of Grown-ish and Black-ish appear on Hulu after their broadcast premiere.

The Gilded Age, from Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes, debuts January 24 and follows events and characters surrounding the American Gilded Age in the late 19th century, according to the network. Cynthia Nixon, Carrie Coon and Morgan Spector star in the series.

Also premiering on January 24 is A&E's documentary series Secrets of Playboy. The 10-episode examines the Playboy empire and the far-reaching consequences it had on our culture’s view of power and sexuality, said the network.

Single Drunk Female, about a 20-something alcoholic who moves home with her mother with the hopes of getting sober, begins on Freeform January 20. Sofia Black-D’Elia plays the young woman, Samantha, and Ally Sheedy portrays her mother. 

Creator Simone Finch began writing the project back in 2012. “The idea was, what if I got sober on my mom’s couch?” she told B+C, “instead of Los Angeles? And here we are.”

Finch executive produces alongside Jenni Konner and Daisy Gardner, among others. Gardner called Konner a mentor in her early days of being a comedian in Los Angeles. She recalled Konner, whose credits include Girls, inviting her to watch the pilot of 2006 Ted Danson comedy Help Me Help You get shot. 

Konner recalls it differently. It was, “Can you come for free and be as funny as you are for free,” she said, “and help our pilot get better?”

Moving home to Boston, Samantha works at a grocery store and battles the temptations to drink, with some success. Two episodes premiere January 20. Episodes stream on Hulu the day after their premiere. 

The project has gotten more relevant amidst the pandemic, said Finch. “So many people are using alcohol and drugs to cope,” she said. 

Gardner added that many 20-somethings have also moved in with their folks the past couple years. “I’m grown up, I’ve grown past this place, and now I’m in my childhood bedroom,” she said. 

Phil Traill, Nora Silver and Leslye Headland also executive produce Single Drunk Female. 

Finch described Samantha as annoying, loveable, funny, kind and self-obsessed. Konner called Sofia Black-D’Elia a genius in her portrayal of Samantha. “She’s so funny, so smart, vulnerable and always surprising,” she said. 

Black-Delia’s work includes The Mick, Gossip Girl and Your Honor. Gardner said Black-D’Elia has a knack for digging into a script to find the real funny. “She’s read the scene 50 times, she’s analyzed it, and found stuff in the scene you haven’t found yet,” said Gardner. 

When the scene is caught on camera, the producers and writers credit themselves for crafting brilliant lines. Gardner said plenty of credit goes to Black-D’Elia. “She found the thing that made the scene turn,” she said. 

Finch is a big fan of Ally Sheedy and never thought the show would land her. “We met her and she said, yeah, I want to do it,” said Finch. “I was like, what?”

Sheedy’s work includes films The Breakfast Club, St. Elmo’s Fire and High Art, and a bit of television, but not many regular roles. 

Konner credited Finch for penning a script that Sheedy could not turn down. “It’s a testament to Simone’s writing that she could create a character to lure Ally Sheedy to television,” she said. 

The producers single out Freeform for having their back on a unique project. “They take chances on women, on women’s stories, on women EPs, women showrunners, women storytellers,” Gardner said. “We are super grateful for that.” ■ 

The return of two, long-running cable series highlights a busy list of show premieres this week.

Netflix on Jan. 21 will debut the fourth and final season of its Emmy-winning drama series, Ozark, starring Jason Bateman and Laura Linney. The final season will feature two parts consisting of seven episodes each, according to Netflix. 

Showtime on Jan. 23 will premiere the sixth season of Billions minus co-lead actor Damian Lewis, who departed the show after the fifth season. Paul Giamatti and Corey Stoll will serve as co-stars for the upcoming season.

Among new series launching this week is Hulu's How I Met Your Father -- a spinoff of CBS' long-running How I Met Your Mother series -- which debuts Jan. 18.

Sports networks dominated the top two slots on the cable primetime charts during the last full week of 2021.

NFL Network, on the strength of the 7.8 million viewers who tuned into its Dec. 23 San Francisco 49’ers-Tennessee Titans NFL Thursday Night Football game, finished in first place during the week of December 20-December 26 with an average of 3 million viewers, according to Nielsen. 

ESPN, led by its Dec. 20 Minnesota Vikings-Chicago Bears Monday Night Football game, finished second for the week with 2.2 million viewers, followed by Fox News with 1.8 million watchers. 

Hallmark Channel wrapped up its holiday movies schedule in fourth place with 1.2 million viewers, followed by TBS with 1.1 million viewers. Freeform, MSNBC and Paramount Network finished tied for sixth with 1 million viewers, followed by HGTV (982,000 viewers) and TLC (818,000).

Fox News averaged 1.3 million viewers on a 24-hour basis, finishing 2021 on an impressive 45-week winning streak on the total day charts. Hallmark Channel (869,000 viewers), ESPN (838,000), NFL Network (826,000) and Freeform (616,000) rounded out the top five most-watched networks in the chart, reported Nielsen. ■       

Fox News Channel wrestled the weekly primetime ratings crown from ESPN last week as the two networks continue their dominance. 

Fox News averaged 2.4 million viewers for the week of Dec. 13-Dec. 19, regaining the top spot from ESPN, which finished second with 1.9 million viewers, according to Nielsen. Either Fox News or ESPN have topped the primetime ratings for the past eight weeks. 

Hallmark Channel was third with 1.4 million viewers, followed by NFL Network’s 1.4 million viewers and MSNBC’s 1.3 million watchers. The rest of the top 10 most-watched networks include Paramount Network (1 million viewers), HGTV (870,000), TBS (864,000), Freeform (862,000) and Food Network (794,000). 

Fox News continued to dominate the total day chart, winning for the 44th consecutive week, besting Hallmark Channel (827,000), ESPN (739,000), MSNBC (727,000), and CNN (517,000), according to Nielsen. ■

Hallmark Channel actually dominates the top five overall — also taking fourth and fifth place to hype, respectively, Sister Swap: Christmas in the City and A Dickens of a Holiday!

Once again, the only regular series that gets some love in the top five: Ghosts, the CBS sitcom, in third place (up from fourth place last time).

The National Football League pads its watch-time lead compared to other TV programming, with 5.86% of total minutes watched during the week of December 6-12 (up from 5.63% the previous week). 

Some additional insights about the top programming on TV:

• Despite being limited to the Army-Navy Game and a handful of Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) playoff games, college football still nabbed 0.81% of watch-time on the week.
• Law & Order: Special Victims Unit shoots up to No. 2 in our ranking, with 0.88% of minutes watched.
• Both Chicago P.D. (No. 10) and Chicago Fire (No. 24) are among the most-watched programs from December 6-12.
• Rerun viewing of The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men lifted both shows into our top 25 most-watched list after neither was included the previous week.

Yet again, it’s CBS atop the most-watched network list for the week, with 8.49% of watch-time (down slightly from 8.82% the previous week). As expected, the NFL led the way there, though the Army and Navy’s annual matchup was also a big draw.

• Freeform’s Christmas movies continue to increase watch-time for the network, amounting to 1.73% of minutes watched from December 6-12 (up from 1.49% the previous week)
• NBC added to watch-time from the previous week (from 6.91% to 7.33%), thanks in part to the People’s Choice Awards.
• USA Network leaps from No. 18 to No. 15 week-over-week, mostly by way of Law & Order: SVU and Chicago P.D. reruns.
• History Channel is the lone week-over-week newcomer to our ranking, moving up from No. 28 the previous week to No. 24 from December 6-12 (with 1.04% of minutes watched).

NFL games continue to outpace the rest of TV, delivering over 7.2 billion ad impressions from December 6-12 — nearly eight times the next-highest programming (Good Morning America).

More data about the top programs by TV ad impressions during the week:

• Live National Basketball Association games ascend to No. 3 by impressions as fan interest continues to grow about a third of the way through the 2021-22 regular season.
• Soap operas were four of the top 25 programs by TV ad impressions from December 6-12, led by The Young and the Restless (No. 6), and followed by General Hospital (No. 14), Days of Our Lives (No. 20) and The Bold and the Beautiful (No. 25).
• Even with minimal college football action on the week, the sport is still No. 7 by TV ad impressions.
• The top 10 in our ranking features two different game shows: The Price Is Right (No. 8) and Let’s Make a Deal (No. 10).

CBS remains atop our ad-impressions-by-network ranking for December 6-12, with 27% of those TV ad impressions delivered by Sunday’s NFL doubleheader. 

Additional insights around the top networks by impressions from the week:

• Bravo continues moving up our rankings, migrating from No. 18 to No.15 week-over-week.
• Live airings of NBC’s Chicago-themed shows (Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, Chicago P.D.) served over 8% of TV ad impressions combined on the network for the week.
• Fox News hurdles over Fox by impressions (from No. 5 to No. 4), as Fox lost college football impressions now that the regular season is over.
• A Royal Queens Christmas garnered the largest impressions share of voice on Hallmark Channel for the week (among first-airing programs), with over 34% from December 6-12.

ESPN once again alternated with Fox News to take the top spot on the primetime ratings chart, while the cable news network blew away the competition in total day ratings.

ESPN, which drew more than 14 million viewers for its December 6 New England Patriots-Buffalo Bills Monday Night Football game telecast, averaged 2.6 million viewers to finish first in primetime for the week of December 6 to December 12, according to Nielsen. ESPN bested last week's most watched network, Fox News, which finished second with 2.3 million viewers. Hallmark Channel finished third with 1.5 million viewers, followed by MSNBC with 1.1 million watchers.

HGTV was fifth with 890,000, followed by Freeform with 867,000 viewers. Paramount Network (858,000 viewers), TBS (792,000), TLC (780,000) and Food Network (759,000) rounded out the top 10 most watched networks in primetime. 

Fox News was tops on the total day charts for the 43rd consecutive week with 1.4 million viewers, followed by Hallmark Channel (883,000 viewers), ESPN (795,000), MSNBC (684,000) and HGTV (510,000), according to Nielsen. ■

Another week, another change at top of the primetime charts as Fox News leapfrogs over ESPN for top honors, according to Nielsen.

The news network averaged 2.4 million viewers for the week of Nov. 29 to Dec. 5, topping last week’s winner ESPN, which garnered 2.1 million viewers, said Nielsen. The two networks have dominated the top two slots on the primetime chart since the last week of October. 

Hallmark Channel finished in third place for the third straight week with 1.5 million viewers, followed by MSNBC’s 1.2 million viewers. Freeform’s lineup of holiday films helped drive the network to a fifth place finish with 1 million viewers.

HGTV (915,000 viewers), TLC (884,000), INSP (793,000), TNT (767,000) and History (759,000) rounded out the top 10 most-watched networks in primetime.

Fox News topped the total day charts for the 42nd straight week, besting Hallmark Channel (849,000 viewers), ESPN (741,000), MSNBC (704,000) and CNN (524,000), said Nielsen.  

Drama Good Trouble is getting a fourth season on Freeform. The network announced the news after the season three finale Sept. 8, which found Callie questioning the career choices she’s made.

Good Trouble follows the residents of downtown Los Angeles’ The Coterie as they juggle career, love and friendship and learn that standing up for what you believe in requires making a little noise and getting into trouble.

In the cast are Maia Mitchell, Cierra Ramirez, Sherry Cola, Tommy Martinez, Zuri Adele, Emma Hunton, Josh Pence and Beau Mirchoff.

Good Trouble is co-created by Joanna Johnson, Peter Paige and Bradley Bredeweg. Johnson executive produces along with Gregory Gugliotta, Christine Sacani, Maia Mitchell, Cierra Ramirez, Jennifer Lopez, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Benny Medina.

Good Trouble is a spinoff of The Fosters. 

Freeform has renewed its sci-fi series Motherland: Fort Salem for a third and final season a day before its season two finale, the network said Monday.

The series, which is set in an alternate, present-day America where witches ended their persecution over 300 years ago by cutting a deal with the U.S. government to fight for their country with supernatural tactics and weapons, stars Taylor Hickson, Jessica Sutton, Ashley Niciole Willams and Amalia Hol.

Motherland: Fort Salem is executive produced by Eliot Laurence, Will Ferrell, Adam McKay Kevin Messick and Amanda Tapping.

Season two of supernatural drama Motherland: Fort Salem is on Freeform June 22. Raelle, Tally and Abigail make up a trio of young witches working on behalf of the U.S. army. In the new season, they face a threat from an ancient group of witch hunters.

Paramount Plus on June 24 debuts a new season of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars after VH1 aired the reality competition show for its first five seasons, while Prime Video on June 25 premieres the Mary J Blige’s My Life musical documentary revolving around the R&B singer’s classic “My Life” album.   

On the documentary front, HBO on June 21 will debut a new episode of its true-crime series I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, chronicling events surrounding the infamous Golden State Killer.

Freeform president Tara Duncan has been tapped to oversee Disney General Entertainment's Onyx Collective, a new Hulu-based content brand that will feature original content from creators of color and underrepresented voices. 

The brand, announced Tuesday during Disney’s virtual upfront presentation, will officially launch with the acquired documentary, Summer of Soul (...or, When the Revolution Could Not be Televised), which launches on July 2. 

Onyx will also feature documentary series The 1619 Project, based The New York Times Magazine and journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones's project of the same name. Lionsgate, Roger Ross Williams and Oprah Winfrey will produce the project, which examines the legacy of slavery in America and how it shaped nearly all aspects of society.

In addition, all non-Marvel titles produced by Ryan Coogler’s Proximity production company will also appear within the Onyx Collective brand.

Cruel Summer, a psychological mystery series from Jessica Biel, premieres on Freeform April 20. The thriller follows two young women: Kate is a popular girl with a seemingly charmed life, and Jeanette is a nerdy wannabe who is accused of being connected to Kate’s disappearance. 

Set over three summers and told through shifting points of view, “the series challenges perception and follows how one girl can go from being a sweet outlier to the most despised person in America,” according to Freeform.

Biel got her start in the cast of 7th Heaven. Her film work includes Total Recall and The Rules of Attraction. She executive produces The Sinner on USA.

HBO Max’s latest Warner Bros. film premiere and a new Freefrom teen thriller series highlight this week’s new and returning show premieres.

HBO Max on April 23 will premiere Mortal Kombat, the latest Warner Bros. film to debut on the streaming service day and date with the film’s theatrical premiere. The movie is the  latest film adaptation of the Mortal Kombat video game franchise.

Debuting April 20 is Freeform’s latest teen drama series Cruel Summer, produced by actress Jessica Biel. Freeform takes an inside look at the often-complicated lives of teenage girls in its new original series, Cruel Summer.

The series, executive produced by Jessica Biel, provides a unique perspective into the lives of two teenagers, Jeanette Turner (Chiara Aurelia) and Kate Wallis (Olivia Holt). Set in the 1990s, the story takes place over the course of three years and chronicles the events that surround Kate, the seemingly glamorous and popular high school girl with a hunky boyfriend, and Jeanette, the cute-but-nerdy girl who wants to be popular like Kate. 

Jeanette’s obsession with Kate is made obvious early in the series, when during a chance meeting at the mall Jeanette can hardly bring herself to say hello to the pretty Kate. Kate is polite but pays Jeanette little mind as her boyfriend Jamie (Froy Gutierrez), who is Jeanette’s secret crush, soon occupies all of Kate’s attention. 

The series flashes forward and back, playing out the circumstances that eventually led to Kate’s disappearance and a makeover of Jeanette from an obscure, awkward teen to the new “it girl” at school. With the cloud of Kate’s disappearance hovering over the town and questions regarding Jeanette’s image transformation, it becomes clear that there’s more to the relationship between Kate and Jeanette than meets the eye.

Cruel Summer cleverly portrays the evolving lives and challenges each girl faces both in their social and family lives through flashbacks and flash-forwards between the three years, while building the toward the inevitable conclusion of what happened to Kate, and the clear evolution of Jeanette’s appearance, mood and emotional state as she becomes inevitably tied to Kate’s disappearance.

Freeform Friday announced it has greenlit a new drama series, Single Drunk Female, and has set an April 20 premiere date for its Jessica Biel-produced series Cruel Summer.

Single Drunk Female, from producers Simone Finch (The Connors), follows the exploits of alcoholic Samantha Fink, who -- after an embarrassing public breakdown and a return home to live with her mother to avoid jail time -- starts to learn that there is a fine line between party girl and walking disaster, according to the network. The series stars Sofia Black-D’Elia, Ally Sheedy, Rebecca Henderson, Sasha Compère, Lily Mae Harrington and Garrick Bernard.

The network also announced an April 20 date for its new psychological thriller Cruel Summer. The series follows the lives of a popular girl with a charmed life who goes missing and a nerdy wannabe accused of being connected with the disappearance. The series stars Olivia Holt, Chiara Aurelia, Michael Landes, Froy Gutierrez, Harley Quinn Smith, Allius Barnes, Blake Lee and Brooklyn Sudano.

Also debuting in April on Freeform is the second season of comedy series Everything is Gonna Be Okay. The series, which stars Kayla Cromer, Maeve Press and Adam Faison, returns April 8 with back-to-back episodes. 

Freeform also announced the spring return of The Bold Type for its final season and the summer sophomore season premiere of Motherland: Fort Salem.

The month of February rolls along with several returning series hitting airwaves this week. 

OWN on Feb. 16 will debut season five of its Ava DuVernay-produced drama series Queen Sugar, while Freeform on Feb. 17 will bring back its drama series Good Trouble for its third campaign. 

Also premiering this week is Hulu’s highly-touted movie Nomadland, which stars Frances McDormand as a woman who leaves her small town to travel the country. The film debuts on Hulu and in theaters on Feb. 19.

The Bold Type will wrap after its next season, said Freeform. Season five arrives later this year and “will celebrate Kat, Jane and Sutton’s journey,” said the network. 

The comedy-drama is about women working at a women’s magazine. 

“The Bold Type is a brand-defining show for Freeform. It’s been refreshing, relatable and fun to watch Kat, Jane and Sutton lean on their friendship to navigate the complexities of modern life,” said Tara Duncan, president of Freeform. “It’s one of my favorite shows, and I am proud that we are giving the series the sendoff Wendy, the incredible cast and crew, and the beloved fans all deserve.”

Katie Stevens, Aisha Dee, Meghann Fahy, Stephen Conrad Moore and Melora Hardin are in the cast. 

Season four left Kat, Jane and Sutton at their limits, both personally and professionally, at Scarlet Magazine. The final season will see them “on the brink of defining who they really are and how best to leave their mark on the world,” said Freeform. 

The Bold Type is produced by Universal Television. Wendy Straker Hauser is the showrunner.

HBO will premiere the second special from its Emmy-winning drama series Euphoria during a busy week for returning series premieres.

HBO’s Jan. 24 special, Euphoria: F*&k Anyone Who’s Not a Sea Blob, is the second holiday episode of the freshman drama series starring Emmy Award winning actress Zendaya.  

The episode follows Jules (Hunter Schafer) over the Christmas holiday as she reflects on the year, according to HBO.

The cable news networks continued to drive cable viewership in the week before the Christmas holiday, with Fox News topping the charts.

Fox News was the most watched cable network during the week of Dec. 14-Dec. 20, averaging 2.4 million viewers, according to Nielsen. ESPN finished a close second with 2.1 million viewers, followed by MSNBC with 2 million watchers.

Hallmark Channel’s holiday-themed original movies helped land the network in fourth place for the week with 1.7 million viewers, followed by CNN’s 1.6 million viewers. NFL Network’s three National Football League game telecasts during the week aided the network's sixth-place finish with 1.2 million viewers, followed by HGTV (1 million viewers), Freeform (952,000), TBS Network (909,000) and History (884,000).

Fox News, MSNBC and CNN all averaged 1.2 million viewers to finish at the top of the total day chart, followed by Hallmark Channel, ESPN, HGTV, Investigation Discovery, Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, Freeform and Food Network, according to Nielsen. 

Fox News settled into first place on both the primetime and total day charts for the second week of December, according to Nielsen.

Fox News averaged 2.7 million viewers in primetime for the week of Dec. 7-Dec. 13, besting ESPN’s 2.3 million, reported Nielsen. MSNBC finished third with 2.1 million viewers, followed by CNN’s 1.8 million viewers and Hallmark Channel’s 1.5 million watchers. 

HGTV (997,000 viewers), History (940,000), Freeform (909,000), TBS (882,000) and USA Network (862,000) rounded out the top 10.

On the strength of 549.1 million TV ad impressions, MTV’s promo for the 2020 Video Music Awards is No. 1. 

In second place, CBS says “it’s time to escape” to Love Island, while in third, Discovery and its siblings — including HGTV, Food Network, OWN and TLC — promote a variety of escapist programming (“Whatever you’re into, it’s on the Discovery family of networks,” an announcer says). Discovery also takes fourth place to promote new show Dodgeball Thunderdome, while Freeform gives some love to its “limited series event” Love in the Time of Corona in fifth.

Notably, the Dodgeball Thunderdome promo has the highest iSpot Attention Score (95.91) in our ranking, meaning viewers were on average more likely to watch it all the way through (vs. interrupting it by changing the channel, pulling up the guide, fast-forwarding or turning off the TV).

Freeform has set an Aug. 22 date for its new limited series Love in the Time of Corona, the network said Monday.

The four-part limited series follows four interwoven stories about the hopeful search for love and connection during this time of quarantine, from the early days of the stay-at-home order through the events that ignited the worldwide Black Lives Matter protests, according to the network.

The series stars Leslie Odom Jr., Nicolette Robinson, Tommy Dorfman, Rainey Qualley, Gil Bellows, Rya Kihlstedt, Ava Bellows and L. Scott Caldwell.

Episodes from Love in the Time of Corona will be available on Hulu the following day, according to network officials.
