Roku said it is gearing up to provide a free live stream Super Bowl LI, when the New England Patriots line up against the Atlanta Falcons this Sunday (Feb.  5) at NRG Stadium in Houston.

Roku’s coverage, to be offered via the Fox Sports Go channel on the streaming platform, will include the pre-game show starting at 2 p.m. ET, up until the kick-off at 6:30 p.m. ET.

In addition to also streaming the halftime show with Lady Gaga, the associated Field Pass stream will supply complementary “sights and sounds in the stadium,” Roku said, noting that Roku users will also be able to watch the game with a Sling TV or PlayStation Vue subscription.

Fox is also offering its live, non-authenticated stream of Super Bowl LI at FoxSportsGo.com, as well as apps for iOS, Android, Windows and Amazon tablets, and other connected TV devices such as Apple TV boxes, Android TV-powered devices, Fire TV players, the Google Chromecast, and the Xbox One console. Verizon has the streaming rights for smartphones.

As a first, Fox will work with more than 170 Fox affiliates to deliver local ads via the online video feed of the big game.

The streaming bar has been set heading into Sunday’s big game. CBS’s live stream of Super Bowl 50 last year between the Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers drew 3.96 million unique viewers across laptops, desktops, tablets, connected TV devices and mobile phones.

Fox said it will offer a live, non-authenticated stream of Super Bowl LI via Fox Sports Go, and that the network, as a first-time bonus, will work with more than 170 Fox affiliates to deliver local ads via the online video feed of the big game.

Fox said it will stream the game for free at FOXSportsGo.com as well as apps for iOS, Android, Windows, and Amazon tablets, and via a variety of TV-connected devices, including Apple TV boxes, Roku players and Roku TVs, Android TV-powered devices, the Google Chromecast streaming adapter, Amazon Fire TV players, and the Xbox One console. Verizon has the NFL streaming rights on smartphones. 

Because it’s a non-authenticated stream, Fox’s online feed of the Super Bowl broadcast won’t require viewers to enter their pay TV credentials to view it.

Fox noted that more than 170 Fox affiliates have already committed to work with Fox Sports to program local digital ads for Super Bowl LI. Those participating affiliates will have access to same ad inventory for both the linear and digital broadcasts of the February 5 game, they said.

CBS’s live stream of Super Bowl 50 between the Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers drew 3.96 million unique viewers across laptops, desktops, tablets, connected TV devices and mobile phones. That compared to the CBS Super Bowl telecast, which averaged 111.9 million viewers.

“As part of the buildup to this year’s Super Bowl, we’re committed to creating the best possible experience for fans by dramatically expanding the ways and places in which they can watch the game,” Eric Shanks, Fox Sports president, COO and executive producer, said in a statement. “Our pioneering collaboration with our affiliates to allow streaming local ad insertions will make commercials even more relevant for viewers and help make this year’s game even more of a personal experience for every fan,”

Fox Sports Go, Fox Sports's authenticated TV Everywhere app supporting multiple live network feeds, has launched on the new, fourth-generation Apple TV.

Alongside access to Fox Sports, FS1, Fox Sports Regional Networks, Fox College Sports, Fox Deportes and Fox Soccer Plus, the app for Apple TV also comes with some new features, including streaming at 60 frames-per-second and a Multiview mode that lets viewers watch four Fox Sports live feeds simultaneously.

Apple TV announced it would add support for Fox Sports Go in June at Apple’s Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). 

Fox Sports Go also supports the iOS and Android mobile devices, the Amazon Fire TV, Windows Phone,  Android TV devices, Web browsers and Roku players.

Fox Sports estimates that the app is supported by MVPDs serving more than 95 million people in the U.S. 

Taking full advantage of new and emerging digital platforms, Fox Sports said it will “quadcast” daily show, Outkick the Show, by streaming it simultaneously on Facebook, Perisope, YouTube and the Fox Sports GO  app, all without requiring viewers to have a pay TV subscription.

Outkick the Show, hosted by Fox Sports College Football Insider Clay Travis, is offered live each weekday at noon ET, and features his take on the day’s sports headlines, interviews and Q&A with viewers. Following those live broadcasts, the show, an extension of Travis’s Outkick the Coverage blog, can also be downloaded for free as a podcast via iTunes.

In a one-man-band type of setup, Travis streams the show using three iPhone 6s and an iPad Mini attached to a modified tripod. That approach, Fox Sports said, will enable Travis to take Outkick the Show’ on the road to “several major sporting events” in 2016.

“At one point you needed a physical radio station with a large antenna to speak to the masses,” Travis said in a statement. “Now you don't. All I need to reach the masses is a Wi-Fi signal. Basically I want to make consuming ‘Outkick the Show’ as fun and easy as possible. And I think this is the answer. If you have a Wi-Fi connection or a phone, you'll have access to ‘Outkick the Show.’”

Fox will be taking multiscreen to the extreme on Friday (August 14) at 2:30 p.m. ET when it kicks off coverage of the Bundesliga season opener between defending champ Bayern Munich and Hamburg.

In addition to televising the match nationally on Fox Sports Regional Networks and Fox Sports 2, the programmer will also offer live streams on four platforms – YouTube, the Fox Sports GO app, Fox Soccer 2 GO app and at FoxSports.com.

Fox is set to offer all 306 Bundesliga matches this season on Fox Soccer 2 Go, a digital subscription service that runs $99 per year. All matches from Germany’s top pro league televised by Fox Sports 1, Fox Sports 2 and Fox Deportes will also be available on Fox Sports Go, Fox’s authenticated TV Everywhere app.  Fox noted that this season is 21Century Fox’s first as the global media rights partner for the Bundesliga.

“We were looking for a creative way to kick off our new long-term partnership with the Bundesliga,” said Pete Vlastelica, executive vice president, digital, at Fox Sports, said in a statement. “One great way to do that is to tap into the power and accessibility of YouTube, and showcase Bayern Munich, one of the best soccer teams in the world.”

"We’re über-excited to bring Bundesliga matches to US soccer fans on YouTube for the first time ever,” added Tim Katz, head of sports partnerships, North America, at YouTube. “YouTube is already the premier home for sports highlights and with this partnership with FOX Sports we're delivering even more great sports programming to fans."

With the first FIA Formula E Championship concluding this weekend with an ePrix doubleheader from London’s Battersea Park, Fox Sports and Formula E announce their broadcast deal now extends through the 2019-20 season, with races airing live on Fox Sports 1, Fox Sports 2 and Fox Sports Go.

“With a history-making first season under its belt -- where every race was a successful first race -- we’re thrilled to extend our relationship with Formula E,” David Nathanson, head of business operations for Fox Sports, said in a release. “Worldwide interest continues to grow in a series that delivers great racing alongside aggressive green initiatives and next-generation technology, and Fox Sports is proud to partner with such an effort.”

The new deal, which calls for a minimum of eight races per season, also includes live racing on newly re-branded Fox Sports Racing in Canada and the Caribbean, as well as the possibility of additional Formula E shoulder programming.

“We are delighted that Fox Sports has extended its exclusive agreement to show Formula E live in North America,” Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag said in the release. “Fox remains an important partner for Formula E in this market, where we enjoyed great success with our Miami and Long Beach races this season. This agreement will ensure U.S. viewers receive the very best live coverage, which will allow us to grow our fan base. In addition, Fox Sports has believed in Formula E since the very beginning and we’re very happy that we’ve renewed our long-term partnership just ahead of the final rounds of the inaugural season -- a sign that the confidence they put on us has become even stronger.”  

This weekend’s championship-deciding events were slated to air Saturday on Fox Sports 1 and today (June 28) at 10:30 a.m. on FOX Sports 2. Both races were also available on FOX Sports Go. Former NASCAR and Formula One driver Nelson Piquet Jr. was the favorite to win the series’ inaugural title, following a 11-race season highlighted by stops in some of the most influential cities in the world, including Buenos Aires, Miami, Los Angeles, Moscow, Beijing, Berlin and London.

The series currently features two U.S. entries -- Jay Penske’s Dragon Racing and Andretti Formula E, sitting fourth and fifth, respectively in the team standings, heading into this weekend’s final two races. 

Carrying the live stream of Fox’s coverage of this Sunday’s Daytona 500 won’t be a first for Fox Sports GO, but the programmer hopes the app's second go-round for the big race will steer in an even larger group of fans than it did last year.

Expectations are higher this year because more MVPDs now have TV Everywhere rights with Fox (the Fox Sports GO app is now available to about 60 million pay-TV homes), and the app itself is now offered on many more devices than it was at this time last year.

Update: DirecTV recently launched Fox Sports GO, which pushed the app's total distribution to 80 milion homes. 

“We have a much bigger audience that we’re going to be exposing this to,” Clark Pierce, senior vice president, mobile and advanced platforms for Fox Sports, said.

MVPD integrations with Fox Sports GO up since last year’s big race, but this year’s Daytona 500 will be the first in which the app is available on the popular Android platform for smartphones and tablets.

Fox Sports GO is also offered on iOS and Amazon Fire tablets and smartphones, select Windows devices, on the Web at FoxSportsGo.com, and, as of earlier this month, on the Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick. Fox launched the app in October 2013.

“I’m excited to see how we do with multiplatform distribution…and being on multiple operating systems,” Pierce said.  

As for the racing event itself, Pierce said Fox Sports GO will supplement the main live stream with other elements, including alternative video feeds originating from a number of in-car cameras.

While getting more MVPDs on board and more devices supported helps adoption, getting the word out still remains a huge key.

“A big thing for us is awareness right now…awareness of the product and awareness of the value that users get,” said Pierce, who sees TVE as an additive piece of the pay-TV ecosystem. Fox Networks, by the way, has been seeking out ways to build awareness for its TVE offerings, including a “Stream It and Dream It Sweepstakes" that ran its course last November.  

Fox Sports GO, he said, is getting some sizable usage from its coverage of NBA games. “We’ve been pleasantly surprised.”

Following a “living experiment” last year that was limited to a small number of markets and MVPD partners, the app’s in-market streaming for the current NBA season was rolled out with all of Fox’s 17 NBA team partners.

That in-market streaming capability represents one of the special challenges Fox Sports GO had to resolve behind the scenes and under the hood. The complexity of the app was amplified by the fact that it had to support 205 Fox affiliates, 22 regional sports and about a half dozen national cable channels.

Under the app’s technical and operational model, Fox affiliates maintain jurisdiction of their advertising inventories.  “They control it like they do with [traditional] linear TV,” the Fox Sports exec sad, noting that it’s their job to upload their own ads and promos.

From a broader perspective, “it’s a lot of channels, it’s a lot of content and it’s a lot of juggling,” Pierce explained. “Fox Sports GO is really a different product than other TV Everywhere apps.”  

In addition to switching on support for Sling TV, Amazon also announced Thursday that its Fire TV platform has launched access to Fox Sports GO as well as a mix of new apps and games, including TED, CBS News, WSJ Live, and Game of Thrones – A Telltale Game Series.

Fox Sports GO joins a small but growing lineup of authenticated TV Everywhere apps offered on the Fire TV box and the Fire TV Stick, a group that also includes WatchESPN and Showtime Anytime. HBO GO is slated to join the Fire TV lineup this spring.

Amazon has not released shipment and sales figures for its Fire TV devices, but has said that the Amazon Fire TV was the best-selling streaming media box on Amazon.com during the 2014 holiday season, and has called the Fire TV Stick the fastest-selling Amazon device ever. Amazon Fire TV was also the “most wished-for item” by Amazon Prime subs in 2014.

“Adding FOX Sports GO to Amazon Fire TV is a great next step in enhancing our distribution and connecting with more sports fans," said Clark Pierce, SVP, mobile and advanced platforms at Fox Sports, in a statement.

Fox Sports GO also runs on Android- and iOS-powered smartphones and tablets, the Kindle Fire, Windows Phone and Web browsers. MVPDs with rights to the TVE app include AT&T U-verse, Comcast, Bright House Networks, Charter Communications, Time Warner Cable, Mediacom Communications, Cable One, Suddenlink Communications, WideOpenWest, CenturyLink, Frontier Communications, Cox Communications, and GCI, among others.

In the first year of its expansive rights deal with the United States Golf Association, Fox Sports will tee up over 320 hours on its linear and digital platforms across eight championships.

Coverage begins with the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship May 5-6 from The Olympic Club in San Francisco and is highlighted by a record 38.5 hours from the 2015 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay, University Place in Washington.

In addition to the U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur Four-Ball, Fox Sports is scheduled to provide extensive coverage from the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship in May; U.S. Senior Open in June; U.S. Women’s Open and U.S. Junior Amateur in July; and U.S. Amateur and U.S. Women’s Amateur in August.

The plans –under the inaugural season of its 12-year deal with the USGA in which Fox succeeds NBC and ESPN -- call for USGA action on broadcast network, national cable service Fox Sports 1, Spanish-language service Fox Deportes and various Fox Sports Digital entries, including its Fox Sports Go mobile app. 

Fox Sports’ programming schedule represents the most extensive coverage ever assigned to the U.S. Open in its history.

All told the 115th U.S. Open championship will receive some 38.5 hours of live coverage from Thursday through Sunday on the broadcast network and FS1, a three-and-a-half hour increase from a year ago. 

Given its west coast footing, the event should play be big with the Nielsens, as 11.5 of the 22.5 hours scheduled for Fox will air in primetime. That compares with five primetime hours in 2012, the last time the tournament was played in the Pacific time zone.

For its part, Fox Deportes will air three hours of U.S. Open coverage Stateside on both Saturday and Sunday in Spanish, a first in the championship’s storied history.

Fox Sports Digital offers three distinct alternate production feeds available daily on USOpen.com for desktop viewers and via Fox Sports Go and U.S. Open digital platforms, adding an additional 120 hours of coverage.

As part of its coverage of Mike Krzyzewski's bid to win his 1000th college basketball game, Fox  Sports is assigning a special camera to Coach K on Sunday afternoon.

Fox Sports Go has lined up Coach K Cam, which will focus on Krzyzewski's full range of emotions, as his Blue Devils battle St. John's at Madison Square Garden on Jan. 25 at 2 p.m.  “Coach K Cam” is available free and unauthenticated to all users of  the Fox Sports Go app on Sunday afternoon.

Already the winningest coach in collegiate hoops history,  Coach K returns to the World Most Famous Arena, where he topped his mentor Bob Knight's previous mark in November of 2011.

Linear coverage begins on Fox at 1:30 PM (ET) with the Fox College HoopsTip-Off pregame show. Host Kevin Burkhardt is joined in the Los Angeles studio by analysts Ben Howland and Donny Marshall, as well as Marquette head coach Steve Wojciechowski, a former player and assistant under Krzyzewski at Duke. Sunday’s pregame also features a live presence at Madison Square Garden, plus, Duke icons like Bobby Hurley, Christian Laettner, Chris Collins and J.J. Redick have taped messages to their former mentor.

Gus Johnson and Jim Jackson will call the game, which starts at 2 p.m., on Fox.

With all of its regionals that have team deals now live-streaming NBA games in-market, Fox Sports Net has begun to promote the pro hoops TV Everywhere experience with local marketing activities.  

Fox Sports Wisconsin last week tipped off promotional support for the availability of live-streaming of Milwaukee Bucks contests to authenticated subscribers, according to a Fox Sports spokeswoman. Similarly, Fox Sports Indiana, home to the NBA Pacers, this week will initiate a marketing campaign alerting viewers that they can access streamed simulcasts of the RSN’s coverage at Fox Sports Go.com or through Android or iOS-supported devices. Upon signing on with Fox Sports Go, authenticated subscribers can then watch the NBA team that is available through their pay-TV package. 

After testing the technology with a number of distributors and a handful of clubs last season, all 17 of Fox Sports Net's regional sports networks with NBA team deals are now streaming the contests, as well as pre- and post-game fare, in-market, including YES Network.

As part of the Fox Sports Go offering, the RSN, which televises Brooklyn Nets games, launched the service to Time Warner Cable customers on Oct. 29 with the team's 2014-15 season opener against the Boston Celtics (pictured). Cablevision subscribers gained streaming entry last week. YES is also streaming encores of the team’s telecasts, Nets Magazine, The Michael Kay Show and some college basketball.

Like the other FSN regionals, the YES simulcasts feature commercials from the telecasts themselves. Fox Sports originally included “slates” in the pods. The spokeswoman said the company is working on integrating dynamic ad insertion to the mix, with an eye toward streaming distinct spots during the second half of the season.

The six Comcast SportsNet regionals that have launched NBA in-market streaming are running separate ads from the RSNs’ TV schedules.

MSG Network has announced it will commence streaming New York Knicks games in December. 

DirecTV Sports Networks president Patrick Crumb in a recent interview said his group has reached an agreement with the NBA for in-market streaming, and hopes to offer TVE service for the Utah Jazz and Houston Rockets sometime later this season.

Thus far, Fox Sports has inked NBA TVE deals for its RSNs with Time Warner Cable, Charter Communications, Cox and Cablevision, AT&T U-verse, Suddenlink, Wide Open West and MidContinent Cable. Negotiations continue with other key distributors: Comcast, DirecTV, Dish Network and Verizon FiOS.

The addition of Time Warner Cable has bolstered the TVE streaming presence for a number of NBA teams, including Milwaukee. FSN Wisconsin is now running promos for the service during pre-, post- and in-game Bucks telecasts. Announcements are also delivered over the public address at the BMO Harris Bradley Center, where Fox Sports Girls have also demonstrated how the Fox Sports Go app works.

A similar plan will be executed for the Pacers this week and then be extended to various RSNs over the course of the season, according to the Fox spokeswoman.

Fox Sports Go is set live stream the women’s college basketball game between Mount St. Joseph University and Hiram College, that will also air on Nov. 2 at 2 p.m on Fox Sports Regional Networks.

Fox College Sports and Fox Sports Ohio will also televise the game, and the streaming will be available to all users regardless of their video providers.

Freshman for Mount St. Joseph Lauren Hill will have get the chance to achieve her dream of playing in one college basketball game, after the NCAA agreed to play the game earlier. Hill was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), a form of brain cancer that is currently an incurable condition.

Fox Sports Go is available through iOS, Android, Kindle Fire tablets and Fire phones, select Windows devices, Surface Tablets and on desktops.

From the 7th Annual Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas Auction, Fox Sports will provide 23 hours of live coverage starting September 25 at 7 p.m.

Airing on Fox Sports 2 and Fox Sports Go, Elvis Presley’s ’67 Cadillac Coupe de Ville and Johnny Cash’s ’70 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow on the Block will be featured. 

Lead by Bob Varsha, an eight-member team including Mike Joy, Steve Magnante, Rick DeBruhl, Justin Bell, April Rose, Ralph Sheheen and Tom Jensen, will kick off the auctioning from the Mandalay Bay Event Center in Las Vegas.

The auction will finish with a 10-hour live block on National Geographic Channel on September 27th at 2 p.m.

The Hagerty Fantasy Bid will allow viewers to compete in guessing the final “hammer” price prior to 16 chosen cars through three days of coverage.

In the first year, 50,000 bids were recorded through the interactive fantasy bid, topping more than 1.5 million in past years.
