Flipps, developer of a mobile app that lets users discovery and fling content to connected TVs, said it has landed a $2.4 million A round from investors that include Earlybird Venture Capital and existing investors that include Tim Draper.

San Francisco-based Flipps, which has raised a total of $2.8 million, said it will use the funds to boost its user base in the U.S. and Europe and to expand its library of premium content.

Flipps, which has developed for Android and iOS platforms, claims that its technology works with more than 250 million connected TVs and is compatible with more than 5,000 models.  Its app has been downloaded more than 10 million times, according to the company.

“Watching quality entertainment on your TV has become overly confusing with the need for costly hardware devices and complicated remote controls.  People should just be able to lean back and watch what they want, when they want without needing an engineering degree,” said Kosta Jordanov, CEO of Flipps, in a statement. “At Flipps, we’ve figured out an easy and universally compatible way to turn your smartphone into a magic wand of entertainment that projects onto the big screen.”

Thanks to platforms such as the Google Chromecast and new features that grace Roku's platform, the ability to fling/cast content from mobile devices to the big screen is catching on. Of recent note, LG Electronics introduced Connect SDK, an open source software development kit for iOS and Android that aims to unify device discovery and connectivity across multiple TV platforms, including smart TVs powered by its own webOS platform.
