HGTV has ordered 15 new episodes of Flip or Flop, the network said Thursday,

The home makeover series, which stars Tarek El Moussa and Christina Anstead, is averaging more than 9.3 million viewers to date during its current season, according to HGTV. The new episodes, which will continue to follow the divorced duo as they co-parent their two children and run a successful Southern California home renovation and flipping business, are slated for premiere in late 2021, said network officials. 

“Season by season, Flip or Flop grew into a television franchise that is an unstoppable force,” said Jane Latman, president, HGTV in a statement. “Tarek El Moussa and Christina Anstead are stars who appeal to a wide audience and their triumphs and challenges are real and relatable. Legions of fans continue to watch the evolution of their story to see how they handle whatever life throws at them next.” 

HGTV’s docuseries Christina on The Coast launched its second season on Jan. 2 with series host Christina Anstead continuing to showcase her professional and personal life. The series attracted more than 12 million total viewers last summer during its first season, according to HGTV. 

The Flip or Flop co-star recently talked about her series -- which delves into her marriage and family plans with husband Ant Anstead (host of MotorTrend series Wheeler Dealers) as well as her house-flipping and real estate career. Anstead also opines about the continued viewer appeal of the home improvement genre in the interview, an edited version of which appears below.

How will season two of Christina on The Coast differ from the show's inaugural season?

Season two highlights my pregnancy, and follows the journey of telling the kids, designing our nursery, and ends with the birth of baby Hudson. The season opener focuses on a firefighter and his family's [home] … it was a huge transformation and they were such a sweet couple. I also got to do my producers’ home as well as my BFF Cassie [Zebisch]’s master bedroom and bathroom.

Does Christina on The Coast present a different, more personal experience for you both on screen and behind the camera than Flip or Flop?

Yes, it’s much more personal working directly with home owners designing their dream space as opposed to working on projects with quick turnarounds that need to appeal to the masses.

Why does the home improvement genre continue to have strong appeal to viewers?

I think watching any type of transformation is exciting. Plus, people love to get ideas on how to fix up their homes.

Are you concerned that the genre may become over saturated given the number of shows in the marketplace?

No - the more the merrier... people have their preferences and there is something for everyone on HGTV.

Where do you see yourself and your career over the next five years?

Making more shows for HGTV. I love doing both Christina on the coast and Flip or Flop .. I’m lucky because I love my job.

HGTV said it has greenlighted four new shows in the theme of buying "the worst home on the best block" and then restoring and potentially re-selling it, a theme that has been successful at the Scripps Networks outlet (see " 'Flip Or Flop' Notches Series High"). They are likely to make their debut this summer, the network said, with scheduling yet to be determined.

And Flipping Moms gives popular authors and mom bloggers Jen Pate and Barb Machen center stage as they try to balance busy family lives with buying, renovating and selling fixer uppers. 

“Viewers are very interested in renovation and flipping when it leads to the outcome that every community wants -- restored, well-maintained homes,” Allison Page, general manager, HGTV and DIY Network, said in a release. “HGTV has had tremendous success with series like Rehab Addict and Fixer Upper which showcase real people who have a passion for renovating older properties to enhance their value to the overall community.”

HGTV had a solid 2014, a down year for most cable programmers, with primetime ratings growing 4%. Top viewed series were Property Brothers, Property Brothers at Home, Flipping the Block and Tiny House Hunters, per the network.

HGTV said its Sunday (July 20) premiere of new renovation-competition series Flipping The Block (pictured) was one of the best ever at the network, averaging 1.6 million viewers during its 9 p.m. time slot, part of the highest-ever rated Sunday for the Scripps Networks outlet.

Flipping the Block, produced by Authentic Entertainment and featuring HGTV and DIY Network's Josh Temple (House Crashers), Nicole Curtis (Rehab Addict) and Scott McGillivray (Income Property), also drew a 0.81 rating among viewers ages 25-54. Beachfront Bargain Hunt, with two episodes starting at 8 p.m., garnered a 0.92 rating in the 25-54 bracket, "a 'best-ever performance' for the series and a 61% increase over recent levels," HGTV said. The first episode averaged 1.9 million viewers and the second averaged 2.1 million, the network said. 

Overall, HGTV averaged a 0.73 primetime rating among viewers ages 25-54 and delivered its highest Sunday primetime rating since March 2011, the network said. On a total day basis, the network said it attracted more than 15 million viewers.  

"To launch a brand new primetime series on the most competitive night of the week and have it propel HGTV to the No. 1 spot among women and the highest rated Sunday ever in total day is exactly the kind of performance that our sponsors and partners want to see," Kathleen Finch, president, HGTV and DIY Network, said in a release. "We know what's at stake and have worked toward this outcome for months. Top 10 never gets tired." 

HGTV also said the 7:30 p.m. episode of Flip or Flop had a 1.07 rating among viewers ages 25-54. Nielsen live-plus-same-day figures report 2.035 million viewers on average for that episode.

HGTV said the Tuesday night telecast of Flip or Flop -- 1.7 million total viewers in the 9-9:30 p.m. time slot on a live plus same day basis -- was the network's highest-rated single showing of any primetime series since a House Hunters episode in April 2013. In the 25-54 age group, the show achieved a series-high rating of 0.92, or 903,000 viewers, the network said. 

HGTV said that overall more than 6.2 million total viewers tuned in to the network on Tuesday night, making it HGTV's highest-rated Tuesday night ever among the 25-54 age group, excluding holidays.

Further breaking down the demographic results, HGTV said the Flip or Flop episode was a top 10 cable program on the night (June 17) among viewers ages 25-54 and women ages 25-54 with a household income of $100,000 and above.

The second season of Flip or Flop started in April. The show features Tarek El Moussa who, with his wife, Christina (both are pictured), flip new properties, while the cameras roll.
