Netflix and HBO were the big winners during Sunday’s Critics Choice Awards, securing the most wins in the television category.

HBO led all services with six awards, including best drama series for Succession, according to the Broadcast Television Journalists Association. Netflix took home five awards in the television category and nine overall awards, including theatrical films.

Amazon’s Fleabag won three awards, including best comedy series, to top all shows. The win was the third best comedy series accolade for Fleabag this awards season, matching its Emmy and Golden Globes awards.

Actor Taye Diggs hosted Sunday's live Critics Choice Awards telecast, which aired on The CW network. A partial list of The Critics Choice Awards winners in the television category are as follows:

Live in Front of a Studio Audience: Norman Lear's All in the Family and The Jeffersons

HBO fought off a strong showing from streaming services Amazon Prime and Hulu to finish with the most Golden Globes Awards wins on Sunday night, according to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

HBO finished with four Golden Globe Award wins from its 15 nominations, topping all cable networks and streaming services (the broadcast networks were shut out of this year's nominations). Amazon Prime Video and Hulu were the only other distributors to win multiple awards with two each during NBC’s live awards telecast.

Netflix, which led all networks and streaming services with 17 Globe award nominations, finished with just one win in the television category: the best actress in a TV drama series award for Olivia Colman for her starring role in The Crown.

HBO was paced by two wins each for Succession, including best TV drama series honors, and for Chernobyl, which won the Globe for best limited series or motion picture made for television.

Amazon Prime’s Fleabag also won two Golden Globe Awards, including best comedy series and best actress in a comedy series for Phoebe Waller-Bridge. The sophomore series matched its wins in the same categories during the Emmy Awards this past September.

Tom Hanks and Ellen DeGeneres were awarded lifetime achievement awards during the telecast, which was hosted by Ricky Gervais.

Mirroring cable years earlier, where the TV shows considered “cool” and “trendy” were housed on cable, the digital streamers have become a haven for the crème of the crop, so to speak. As with cable (excluding exceptions like Game of Thrones, American Horror Story, The Sopranos and Sex and the City), original streamed content does not necessarily attract a wide audience. But when you think of the top TV shows today, quality matters, not audience size. And the quality content, those “cool” and “trendy” shows being streamed, include dramedy The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Fleabag on Amazon Prime; Stranger Things, Russian Doll and GLOW on Netflix; and The Handmaid’s Tale on Hulu.

The first streamed shows that demonstrated why subscription-based streaming was a force to reckon with, both in 2013, were political drama House of Cards and prison dramedy Orange Is the New Black. House of Cards drew immediate attention for signing then A-list actor Kevin Spacey in the lead role, which opened the floodgates to other big names jumping on the digital bandwagon. And Orange Is the New Black, set at a minimum-security federal prison, demonstrated why digital could take creative risks and dare to be different. There were fewer restrictions.

Then there is the example of an acclaimed entry like Netflix comedy The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, which was originally planned for NBC but shifted to the streamer after it got a better offer.

While the assumption is an outlet like Netflix might attract fewer proverbial eyeballs than a broadcast network (there are no audience metrics available to support any of the current streamers, after all), the two immediate advantages of streaming are the potential critical acclaim and the unrestricted storytelling. With accolades comes attention, at least via the critics who write about original content and the viewers who are commenting on social media. And that begs the question…just how do these shows on the digital streamers break out of the pack in an era flooded with original content? 

“The obvious answer is concept and execution of each individual series,” said Robert Russo, president of consulting firm RNR Media. “Original content on the streamers also produce far fewer episodes per season than broadcast and can run at any length per episode, which is more conducive to quality and creativity. Casting big names can make all the difference.”

Recently launched Apple TV+ created early buzz for new drama The Morning Show from the casting of Jennifer Aniston, Steve Carell and Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon. 

“It’s finding great ideas, great content; things that will ignite us and make us want to watch it; make us want to talk about it; and make us want to be those people and be in those situations,” said Mike Tankel, partner/optimist at marketing and development firm To Be Continued.  “But too many people rush to production and without adequately thinking about how to get the audience talking about it. What do we need to do to stand out? How do we market and brand it?” 

Tankel cites a recent event for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel in Los Angeles where chosen restaurants were offered deli sandwiches at prices comparable to the 1950s-set series. “It was brilliant from a marketing strategy and the whole town was talking about it,” said Tankel. “I am sure that brought more people to check out the show.”

“A good writer knows how to find characters within the show that are not necessarily the talent,” he added. “So, the deli setting on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, where they have their little sessions and see all the agents, has basically became a character on the series.”

Amazon Prime, meanwhile, recently offered a private screening of the third season premiere of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, followed by a Q&A with series stars Rachel Brosnahan and Tony Shalhoub in New York City. And two recent live events capitalized on the growing ComicCon brand: BravoCon, which showcased the network’s top series in New York City; and SopranoCon in New Jersey, which was tailed to beloved HBO drama The Sopranos.

“What we try to do is take marketing and move it into the development phase so that you think about the audience, you think about the characters, you think about the places,” said Tankel. “The coffee shop on Friends is a character; the deli on Mrs. Maisel is a character. And giving these audiences these live experiences is an added incentive.”

The critics, of course, remain vital to getting a TV series noticed.

“With all this content out there, I would change the term critic to navigator,” said Tankel. “We don’t have a way of looking and seeing everything that is available without these navigators. We need someone to shed some light and say ‘check this out.’ It’s the take on the story, who it impacts, and how it makes us feel.”

“Then, of course, there is social media,” added Russo, ”which can give anyone a voice."

HBO outlasted Amazon Prime Video and Netflix as the three services dominated 71st annual Primetime Emmy Awards during a live ceremony that featured several surprises among the night’s winners.

HBO garnered nine Emmy wins during the live telecast to top all services, according to the TV Academy. Amazon Prime Video finished second, drawing seven awards and topping Netflix’s four wins during Fox’s live telecast. 

Prime Video comedy Fleabag won six of the streaming service’s seven awards, including a surprise win in the best comedy series category. The sophomore series topped category favorites The Marvelous Mrs. Masiel, which won last year, and HBO’s Veep, which had won the previous three years.

Fleabag star Phoebe Waller-Bridge also won the Emmy for best actress in a comedy, ending Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ record six consecutive wins in years in which she was nominated for the award. Dreyfus was not eligible to win the award last year, which was won by Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.)

NBC and FX were the only other networks with multiple wins with two each.

Overall including Creative Arts Emmys, HBO tallied 34 Emmy wins, with Netflix finishing second with 27 and Amazon Prime Video finishing third with 15. National Geographic was fourth with eight wins, with NBC rounding out the top five with seven statuettes.

HBO Game Of Thrones made one last Emmy splash, winning a total of 12 Emmys -- including a second straight Emmy for best drama series -- to top all shows. The network’s limited series Chernobyl finished second with 10 Emmy wins, including Outstanding Limited Series. Amazon Prime’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel finished third with eight Emmy wins.

Amazon comedy series Fleabag earned top Emmy honors in a competitive comedy category.  

The series beat out last year's winner The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel as well as multi Emmy winner HBO's Veep in its final year of eligibility for the coveted statuette. 

Also nominated in the category were Netflix's Russian Doll, HBO's Barry, Pop TV's Shitt's Creek and NBC's The Good Place.

In an upset, Phoebe Waller-Bridge won the Emmy award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Amazon Prime Video's Fleabag.

Waller-Bridge beat out five other actresses including last year’s winner Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), and past multi-Emmy winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus in her last year of eligibility as politician Selina Meyer on HBO’s Veep.

Bill Hader won his second straight Emmy winner for Best Actor in a Comedy Series.

Hader topped actors Don Cheadle Black Monday), Anthony Anderson (black-ish), Eugene Levy (Schitt’s Creek) , Ted Danson (The Good Place) and Michael Douglas (The Kominsky Method) for the award.

Netflix stock fell more than 7% Friday after chairman and CEO Reed Hastings told an industry audience that the emergence of new streaming competition from Disney and Apple will create a “new world” of competition.

Hastings was speaking at the Royal Television Society Conference in Cambridge, U.K., and said that beginning in November -- the expected launch dates of Disney+ and Apple TV + -- “it’s a whole new world,” according to reports.

Hastings also name-checked NBC Universal’s planned direct-to-consumer offering Peacock, adding that the competitive landscape will be “tough.”

“Direct-to-consumer [customers] will have a lot of choice,” he said, according to a Variety report. 

But according to The Hollywood Reporter, Hastings said that Netflix has been preparing for the onslaught of SVOD competitors since 2012, and was surprised it hadn’t occurred sooner.

“Sometimes you do your best work when you're challenged,” he said, according to THR.

Still, acknowledging the competition and coming off a bad Q2 -- where Netflix lost domestic subscribers for the first time -- was enough to send the stock southward. Netflix shares traded as low $266 each (down 7.2%) on Sept. 20, before closing at $270.75, down 5.5% or $15.85 per share.

The Friday drop-off basically erased the stock’s gains for the year.

Netflix stock took a beating in July when it announced that it had lost domestic subscribers in the second quarter. The stock continued on a downward slope after that announcement, falling below $300 per share on Aug. 14. With the exception of a brief rise on Aug. 16 (to $302.80 per share) and Aug. 19 (to $309.38), the stock continued to stumble and is down a collective 13% ever since.

Hastings said Netflix would boost its programming spending in the U.K. -- it is on track to spend more than $500 million this year in Britain, a figure that would "not quite double" in 2020, according to THR. 

“Some day The Crown will look like a bargain,” he said according to THR, of the Netflix series estimated to cost between $6.5 million and $13 million per episode. 

He expects content costs to rise higher with new players Disney + and Apple in the mix, adding that Netflix was outbid by Amazon for one show in particular that he coveted -- Fleabag, the critically acclaimed hit series by Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

Hulu’s George Clooney-produced original series Catch-22 is among several new shows debuting over the next seven days.

The series, based on the classic Joseph Heller novel, premieres May 17 and follows the adventures and misadventures of a US air squadron in Italy in World War II, according to Hulu.

HBO teams with NBA superstar LeBron James for a documentary on the life of legendary heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali. What’s My Name: Muhammad Ali, debuts May 14 and explores Ali’s greatest triumphs and comebacks, painting an intimate portrait of a man who, against all odds, dreamed and achieved the impossible, according to the network.
