Magnolia Network officially launches on Discovery Plus Thursday (July 15), offering more than 150 hours of unscripted programming.

The joint venture between Discovery and Chip and Joanna Gaines has over the past few months offered on Discovery Plus sneak peaks of the network's original programming that crosses the home, food, gardening and design genres. Magnolia Network shows officially premiering on Discovery Plus today include Fixer Upper: Welcome Home (pictured), Magnolia Table with Joanna Gaines, Homegrown, Family Dinner and First Time Fixer, said network officials.

“From the beginning, our aim for Magnolia Network has been to tell good stories,” said Chip and Joanna Gaines in a statement. “And while our plan has evolved along the way, our original vision for this network has remained the same: to create a space where people leave feeling like it was time well spent.”

Along with new programming, the network also launched a new Magnolia app which will also offer programming from the network to users with a Discovery Plus subscription.

Magnolia Network, the joint venture between Discovery and Chip and Joanna Gaines, will launch digitally on Discovery Plus in July and as a linear channel in 2022, Discovery announced Thursday.

After several starts and stops on launch dates for Magnolia Network, the announcement finally provides a firm debut date for the much-anticipated service, which will take over Discovery’s DIY Network when it hits cable lineups in January 2022. 

Starting in July, Discovery Plus -- as well as the Magnolia app -- will offer more than 150 hours of unscripted content across the home, food, gardening and design genres, said Discovery. Several Magnolia Network shows have already debuted on Discovery Plus, including Magnolia Table with Joanna Gaines.

The Gaines’ Fixer Upper series will also be available at launch on Discovery Plus, along with such shows as the complete first seasons of Fixer Upper: Welcome Home and Magnolia Table with Joanna Gaines, plus new series Growing Floret, The Lost Kitchen, Homegrown, Family Dinner and Restoration Road with Clint Harp.

The Magnolia app will also provide discovery Plus subscribers with workshop content featuring classes from some talented makers and artisans, according to Discovery.

Magnolia Network has released a trailer for its new series Fixer Upper: Welcome Home, which will debut several episodes on the upstart Discovery Plus streaming service later this month. 

The series, a reboot of the iconic HGTV series Fixer Upper starring Chip and Joanna Gaines that ran from 2013-2017, will feature four episodes that will stream Jan. 29 on the Discovery Plus service, according to company officials.

 Discovery Plus, which launches Jan. 4, will also feature episodes from several other Magnolia Network series and specials, including Magnolia Table with Joanna Gaines and The Courage to Run with Chip Gaines and Gabe Grunewald.

The January 2021 launch of Discovery Inc.'s new direct-to-consumer service Discovery Plus will also serve as a first-look opportunity to access content from the upstart Magnolia Network. 

While Magnolia Network has yet to announce a launch date, the service -- a joint venture between Discovery and Fixer Upper stars Chip and Joanna Gaines -- will have some of its new content prominently featured on the Discovery Plus service, according to Magnolia President Allison Page.

As part of Discovery Plus’  Jan. 4 launch, Magnolia Network will feature four preview shows: Magnolia Table with Joanna Gaines; Magnolia Network: A Look Ahead; Road to Launch and The Courage to Run with Chip Gaines and Gabe Grunewald.

In addition, the streaming service will debut premiere episodes from 10 new Magnolia Network series, including the Andrew Zimmern-hosted Family Dinner and First Time Ever, which will feature first time house flippers who take their own home renovation dreams into their own hands. 

“We are so eager to show some of our content,” Page told Multichannel News. “We’re  excited that we get to sneak peek some of our content early in the year and then work toward our own launch as shortly as possible thereafter.”

Magnolia Network, a joint venture between Discovery, Inc. and Chip and Joanna Gaines, is bringing back Fixer Upper, which ran for five seasons on HGTV before ending in 2018. The Fixer Upper reboot will be on Magnolia Network when it launches in 2021. 

“We are thrilled to welcome back the very show that introduced us all to Chip and Jo in the first place. Fixer Upper is a cultural phenomenon that took an entire programming category by storm when it launched in 2014, and we can think of no better way to launch this network,” said Magnolia Network president Allison Page. “And as we continue to round out our programming slate, we’re excited to announce projects with designer Brian Patrick Flynn and entrepreneur Jonathan Morris, two talented individuals with exceptional stories. There’s a lot to look forward to, and we’re just getting started!”

The reboot will be produced by the Gaines’ production company Blind Nil. The couple owns the construction business Magnolia Homes. 

“The day we wrapped our final episode of Fixer Upper, we really believed it was a chapter closed. We knew we needed a break and a moment to catch our breath. But we also knew we weren’t done dreaming about ways to make old things new again,” said Chip and Joanna Gaines. “These past few years, we’ve continued tackling renovations and projects, doing the work we’re passionate about, but I don't think either of us anticipated how the show would become such a permanent fixture in our hearts. We’ve missed sharing the stories of these families and their homes with you, and we’re excited to do that again very soon!”

Interior designer Brian Patrick Flynn’s untitled project showcases his “eclectic yet distinctive style and keen eye for design,” said Magnolia. Along with his team of designers, Flynn tackles decorating projects on any budget with a dash of humor.

Self Employed (working title) follows Texas entrepreneur Jonathan Morris as he travels the United States meeting small business owners who share their stories. 

Discovery Inc. has set an Oct. 4 launch date for Magnolia Network, a cable network that’s part of a joint venture between the company and producers Chip and Joanna Gaines. The channel (with an accompanying TV everywhere app), run by the former Fixer Upper stars, will replace the DIY linear channel.

Magnolia president and former HGTV president Allison Page spoke to Multichannel News at the TCA Winter Press Tour earlier this month about the challenges in getting Magnolia up and running in today’s competitive TV field. Here’s an edited version of the interview.

MCN: Why does Discovery feel this environment is the best time to launch a linear channel?
Allison Page: Chip and Jo like taking risks. If something seems counterintuitive, it might be something that they are interested in, and the network is a great example of that. The year 2020 is not a year you would expect necessarily to see a linear channel launched, and I think that opportunity to challenge a different path was part of what was intriguing to them.

MCN: With all the discussion and momentum around the emerging streaming platform, how does a new linear network break through the clutter?
AP: We have a belief that linear television is something special, and that it can hearken back to a time when the whole family sat down to watch television. This platform brought families together. There will certainly be digital elements as well, but there is something both romantic, inspiring and relatable about what a TV network can be.

MCN: What do Chip and Joanna Gaines bring to the table as content creators for Magnolia?
AP: Chip and Joanna Gaines bring to the table a broader look into a lot of stories that we see being told today. The subject matter is wide. It does not only encompass home or food or design, but so much more. It’s basically filling in a space that we didn’t see filled.

MCN: Which programming genres will Magnolia offer?
AP: Any genre where there is good storytelling. We’ll incorporate food and garden, health, design, construction, entrepreneurialism and family. It’s a very wide bucket, but we believe that great storytelling appeals to audiences. Chip and Jo believe that everyone has a story worth sharing, and that we can be a home for those stories.

Fixer Upper stars Chip and Joanna Gaines will partner with Discovery Inc. on a new cable network and streaming network as part of a media joint venture between the two parties announced Wednesday.

The as-yet-named multi-platform media company will feature a linear television network -- replacing the current DIY Network -- and TV Everywhere app beginning in Summer 2020, with a subscription streaming service to debut at a later date. The network’s programming will center around topics including community, home, garden, food, wellness, entrepreneurialism and design, according to Discovery.

HGTV president Allison Page will serve as president of the new joint venture, with the Gaines’ serving as chief creative officers. Chip and Joanna Gaines starred in HGTV’s breakout home renovation series Fixer Upper from 2013 to 2018. Episodes from the series will be featured on the new channel, said network officials.

“Chip and Joanna Gaines have become trusted, household names since the debut of Fixer Upper and through this joint venture, Discovery is proud to extend our relationship with them,” said David Zaslav, CEO, Discovery in a statement. “They’ve got authenticity and relatability, that special something that is so difficult in our business to find. People love them, their taste, their businesses – they’ve built an ecosystem that aligns perfectly with our vision at Discovery for fueling people’s passions.”

Discovery, Inc. has named Courtney White to head up Food Network, the company said Monday.

As president of Food Network, White will oversee the company’s food brands. Former president of HGTV and Food Network Allison Page will now concentrate on HGTV going forward, according to Discovery. Page will also continue to work closely with former Fixer Upper stars Chip and Joanna Gaines as they work toward launching their own TV network in tandem with Discovery.

White, formerly executive vice president and general manger of HGTV and Food Network, will relocate to New York from Knoxville, Tenn. She became senior vice president of programming for Travel Channel in late 2015 after serving as vice president of program development and production for HGTV, DIY Network and Great American Country.

“Courtney has been instrumental to the growth of both Food Network and HGTV, turning talented home experts and everyday chefs into treasured, household names,” said Kathleen Finch, chief lifestyle brands officer for Discovery, to whom White will report. “With her strategic eye on Food Network and Allison’s on HGTV, we’ll ensure these iconic brands continue to delight our passionate fans and maximize their unique value to our advertising and affiliate partners.”

Chip and Joanna Gaines, who ended their popular HGTV home renovation series Fixer Upper last year to spend more time with their family, are starting a new TV network with Discovery.

The couple went on the Tonight Show Friday night to announced their return to TV and new business venture.

“We’re coming back to television,” Chip Gaines told Jimmy Fallon.

On the show, he didn’t provide a lot of details about the new network.

“Long story short, we learned a lot through the five-year process of being on Fixer Upper and I think some of the things that really caused us the most problems, we have concluded I think we can figure this out so we’ve actually partnered with [Discovery CEO] David Zaslav and Discovery,” he said. “We’re going to have a network and I think we’re going to really carve it out in a way that really makes sense to us and our families.”

Gaines said a lot of the filming they do will take place in Waco, Texas, where they live. “So we don’t have to travel a whole lot. So all things being equal, we could not be more excited,” he said.

In a statement, Discovery said the announcement wasn't official yet, but it was working with the couple on what it termed a TV network and ecosystem.

Discovery previously formed a network in a joint venture with Oprah Winfrey, reformatting the former Discovery Health channel. It took several years before the network gained traction and started making money. OWN is now majority owned by Discovery.

Fixer Upper had its debut on HGTV in 2013. Season five premiered in November 2017 and ended in April 2018. HGTV launched a spinoff for Joanna Gaines called Fixer Upper: Behind the Design. That show premiered in April.

HGTV was part of Scripps Networks Interactive, which was acquired by Discovery earlier this year.

HGTV said Fixer Upper: Behind the Designwill premiere on Tuesday, April 10, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Starring Chip and Joanna Gaines, the companion show "will give fans a never-before-seen look at the coveted design secrets featured in Fixer Upper." Fixer Upper airs at 7 p.m. HGTV said the new 15-episode series "will highlight how Joanna creates breathtaking designs—from strategy to staging—in each stunning overhaul. Super fans of Fixer Upper can expect to see rooms that were not included in original episodes of the series."

Fox News is steamrolling its cable network competition in primetime so far in 2016.

Still riding high on its coverage of the 2016 political season, Fox News claimed its third consecutive primetime weekly ratings win in a row among total viewers, averaging 2.2 million viewers for the week of Feb. 1 to Feb. 7, according to Nielsen. The network has now been the most watched network in primetime in all but one of the first five weeks of 2016.

HGTV, on the strength of freshman series Fixer Upper, finished second for the week with 1.6 million viewers, followed by USA Network with 1.5 million watchers. ESPN and Disney Channel tied for fourth with 1.4 million viewers, while FX – helped by a network record-setting premiere for its People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story – finished fifth with 1.3 million viewers.

CNN, TBS, Discovery Channel and MSNBC (all tied with 1.2 million viewers) along with History (1.1 million) finished among the top 10 most watched networks in primetime last week.

Fox News was also tops on a 24-hour basis, besting Nickelodeon, Disney Channel, Adult Swim and HGTV, according to Nielsen.

ESPN was the top choice among adults 18-49 in primetime during the period, while Adult Swim was tops on a 24-hour basis within the demo.

HGTV said its 0.58 primetime rating among viewers ages 25-54 in February made that month the network's highest rated ever, surpassing the mark just set in January 2015.

HGTV said the primetime ratings grew 18% over that of February 2014. And on the weekends, 6% growth led to a 0.55 rating among viewers ages 25-54 on Saturday and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Series such as Ellen’s Design Challenge, Fixer Upper and Property Brothers led the way. More than 43 million total viewers watched HGTV in primetime in February, the Scripps Networks outlet said.

The finale of the Ellen DeGeneres show airs Monday, March 2, at 9 p.m. ET/PT as the last two competitors -- Tim McClellan of Durango, Colo., and Katie Stout of Brooklyn, N.Y. -- go head-to-head to win a $100,000 cash prize courtesy of Wayfair.com and a feature in HGTV Magazine. HGTV said it finished second among women ages 25-54 and first among upscale women in that bracket among cable networks.

Four HGTV series will be returning this January with new seasons, filled with new home renovations and real estate episodes, the network announced today.

The returning series: Love It or List It (Hilary Farr and David Visentin), Love It or List It, Too (Jillian Michaels and Todd Talbot), Fixer Upper (Chip and Joanna Gaines) and Property Brothers (Drew Scott and Jonathan Scott).
