HBO reimagines a sci-fi classic in its latest original film, Fahrenheit 451.

Based on the 1953 Ray Bradbury novel of the same name, Fahrenheit 451 takes place in a future United States that looks to eliminate all books and denounces anyone who tries to create a sanctuary for them.

The destruction of books is enforced by “firemen” led by Captain Beatty (Michael Shannon) and his young protégé, Guy Montag (Michael B. Jordan). Once books are found, their job is to burn them on the street in a fire-show, televised for all to see.

Montag is the hotshot of the group and has the respect of his fellow firemen as well as his aging boss, Beatty, who is grooming him to eventually take over his position.

But Montag eventually begins to question his job, especially after watching an older woman voluntarily go up in flames along with her collection of books. He eventually meets and befriends Clarisse (Sofia Boutella), an informant of Beatty’s who also has reservations about her actions and decides to join an underground movement to preserve books and knowledge. Montag soon finds himself having to choose between his devotion to his job and his captain, and his evolving beliefs on the future of humanity through the preservation of the written word.

Jordan, coming off his role as the villain Erik Killmonger in Black Panther, also serves as executive producer of the film, which looks to entertain by providing a stark view of a dystopian future that may not be totally unimaginable.

HBO Sets May Premiere Date for ‘Fahrenheit 451’ Movie

HBO will premiere its original film Fahrenheit 451 on May 19, the network said Friday.

The drama stars Michael B. Jordan (Black Panther) and is based on Ray Bradbury’s classic novel of the same name about a future where the media is an opiate, history is rewritten and “firemen” burn books, said network officials.

The movie also stars Michael Shannon and Sofia Boutella.

Fahrenheit 451 is produced by Noruz Films, Brace Cove and Outlier Society, with Ramin Bahrani, Sarah Green, Jordan, Alan Gasmer, Peter Jaysen and David Coatsworth serving as executive producers.

TCA 2018: HBO Sets Dates For Elvis Presley Doc; ‘Fahrenheit 451’ Movie

HBO has set premiere dates for several original projects, including an Elvis Presley documentary and a Flight of the Conchords special.

The network’s three-hour Elvis Presley: The Searcher documentary will debut April 14 and will offer viewers a journey from Presley’s childhood through his final 1976 Jungle Room recording sessions, the network said.

The documentary also features never-before-seen photos and footage from private collections worldwide, and includes an original musical score composed by Pearl Jam lead guitarist Mike McCready, said the network.

HBO also confirmed a May Flight of the Conchords comedy special featuring music comedians Bret McKenzie and Jermaine Clement performing their classics and new original songs from their Flight of the Conchords Sing Flight of the Conchords tour.

Other HBO announcements include the Feb. 18 return of Last Week Tonight With John Oliver; the Feb. 2 premiere of the 2 Dope Queens comedy special; and the spring premieres of original movies Fahrenheit 451, starring Michael B. Jordan, and Paterno, starring Al Pacino.
