National Geographic earlier this month launched the 11th season of its documentary series Explorer with a new host, television personality Phil Keoghan.

Keoghan, who also serves as host and general manager of The Amazing Race, talked about hosting the iconic Nat Geo series as well as the success of the long-running CBS competition reality show in the latest segment of Multichannel News’ One-On-One in 2 video series. 

National Geographic will team with famed director Ridley Scott on a new scripted series, part of several new scripted and documentary series announced Wednesday as part of the network's “further front” presentation in New York. 

New scripted series include The Hot Zone, based on the international bestseller by Richard Preston and executive produced by Ridley Scott, which  recounts the true story of the Ebola virus, said network officials.

The Hot Zone joins the previously announced, Silicon Valley-themed series Valley of the Boom as new shows on the network’s scripted series lineup, which also includes returning series Genius -- which Wednesday was renewed for a third season that will focus on Frankenstein author Mary Shelly -- and Mars, which will return for its sophomore campaign later this year.

Other scripted series in development include Hidden Figures, an anthology series inspired by the Oscar-nominated movie that profiles people whose contributions to science, technology and innovation have been overlooked by history; The White House Detail, an inside look at the personal and professional lives of U.S.Secret Service agents; and Ten Borders, a six-part limited series centered on five unrelated individuals who are inexorably pulled into one another’s lives through the mass exodus of humanity from war torn Syria to the safe refuge of Sweden. 

Among the network’s new documentary series are Hostile Planet, a six-part series that focuses on the world’s most extreme environments to reveal the animal kingdom’s most epic stories of survival, and In Their Words, which chronicles high-profile events through vintage audio and film recordings. Among the topics explored in the series include the Deepwater Horizon disaster, the narco drug wars and the 2008 global financial crisis.

Another show, Chain Of Command: Secret Service, chronicles the exploits of the agency that protects the president of the United States, said Nat Geo.

National Geographic will also develop several live projects, including Brain Games Live, based on the Emmy-nominated show; and Yellowstone Live, a four-day event that showcased the best of the National Park’s wildlife in real time,

Other specials include Mission to the Sun and Apollo 50 Anniversary, said the network.

The new shows and specials will join returning series Cosmos: Possible Worlds; The Story Of God With Morgan Freeman; Explorer: Life Below Zero; StarTalk; Wicked Tuna and Wicked Tuna Outer Banks.

National Geographic Channel will take viewers on a live ride to all seven continents during a two-hour special Earth Live, one of several new shows the network announced Tuesday during its upfront presentation in New York.

Earth Live!, slated to air later this year, will feature an in studio host that will cut to live wildlife action across seven continents as it events take place, according to Courteney Monroe, chief executive officer of National Geographic Global Networks.

“No one has ever attempted to do this on such a large scale, and only National Geographic has the ability to do so,” Monroe said.

Other new shows include National Geographic Channel will expand its signature franchise Explorer into a host-driven, docu-talk series starring Richard Bacon. Explorer, which the network resurrected last year after a five-year hiatus, will serve as a weekly magazine-talk hybrid that drives the conversation on current events and topics that matter most to the planet, said network officials.

The network unveiled new plans for its six part miniseries Mars, which will combined a scripted story about the colonization of Mars with real-life documentary commentary. Mexican filmmaker Everado Gout (Days Of Grace) will direct the documentary, which will be produced by Brian Grazer, Ron Howard and Michael Rosenberg of Imagine Entertainment.

Other series slated to debut on the network in 2016-17 include Origins, hosted by Jason Silva which will take viewers back through history via visual and musical mastery;  Chain Of Command, a 10-part series that will feature inside access to the U.S. military’s mission in Afghanistan as it unfolds over one full year; Lawless Oceans,  a six-part investigative series which follows special investigator Karsten von Hoesslin as he attempts to solve the mystery of a murder at sea caught on video; and Deep Freeze, which follows leading scientists on thier Antarctica-based missions.

Returning to the network is Year of Living Dangerously, which looks at the effects of climate change through such celebrity correspondents as Jack Black, Ty Burrell, James Cameron, David Letterman, Don Cheadle and Arnold Swchwarzenegger.
