Dish Network said it will integrate Netflix into its Evolve television product for the hospitality industry in the coming months, allowing guests to access their personal Netflix accounts on the TVs in their hotel rooms.

Dish said the Android-based Evolve also allows access to thousands of TV apps available through the Google Play store.

Dish launched Evolve in June 2017, a 4K-capable set-back box that integrates Chromecast, streaming apps via Google Play, live linear content and an interactive programming guide. Powered by Smartbox, Dish’s own head-end video distribution platform for commercial applications, Evolve is designed to work with any hotel wiring scenario, as well as existing or upgraded network infrastructures.

“Integrating Netflix on Evolve is a win-win for hotel operators and guests alike,” said Dish Business vice president Alistair Chatwin in a statement. “Hotel operators can further elevate in-room entertainment by providing guests with Netflix’s personalized entertainment experience, and customers can easily pick up what they’ve been watching at home on Netflix from the comfort of their hotel room.”

Guests staying in hotels powered by Evolve can subscribe to Netflix or sign into their existing account by accessing the Netflix app via the on-screen TV menu. Evolve features Chromecast built-in, so guests can also cast their Netflix content from their mobile devices to their hotel room TV. When the guest checks out of the room, their Netflix user credentials will automatically be removed from the system.

“With Dish’s Evolve, Netflix members can sign into their Netflix account on the hotel room TV in the coming months to watch their favorite Netflix series, documentaries and feature films, or discover new ones, just like they do at home,” said Netflix vice president of business development Paul Perryman in a statement. “Hotel guests who don’t have a Netflix subscription can easily subscribe via the Netflix app on Evolve and immediately begin enjoying titles from our wide assortment of content.”

Following a recent soft-launch, Dish Network said it has commercially launched Evolve, a 4K-capable, Android TV-powered “set-back” box and interface that is tailored for hotels and other partners in the hospitality market.

Dish, which formally unveiled Evolve in tandem with this week’s HITEC Toronto show, said the new platform integrates regular TV with thousands of Android TV-optimized apps from Google Play.

The UI for Evolve also features a channel preview that enables a pop-up window of a live video, as well as a configuration tool that lets partners brand the UI, customize welcome channels, and pre-populate the box with certain apps. The system also clears a guest’s personal information when they check out.

Evolve, which works with Dish’s SMARTBOX SD/HD distribution system for hotels, also supports Chromecast built-in, an integrated system that lets users cast video and other content from their mobile devices to the TV, and also lets users listen to the TV with Bluetooth headsets.

Dish has not announced which of its hotel and hospitality partners are already using Evolve.

Dish’s new Air TV Player, an OTA/OTT combo device targeted to cord-cutters, is also powered by Android TV.

Dish Network confirmed that it has soft-launched the Evolve, a “set-back box” for hotels and other segments of the hospitality industry that is powered by Android TV.

TechHive was first to report on it, noting that the Evolve was designed and developed by Dish and manufactured by LG Electronics. Dish, which has a hotel and hospitality-focused business, said it’s the one selling it.

A Dish official said that the Evolve, which can be hidden behind an HDTV, connects to the company’s SMARTBOX, high-density SD and HD video distribution system tailored for the hospitality channel, and supports live TV, an interactive program guide, and Chromecast built-in, which lets users stream content from their mobile devices to the TV screen.

The new Android TV-based device “gives hotels the opportunity to customize the user interface with their own branding, welcome channels and personalized messages for guests,” the company said.

Dish said it soft-launched Evolve earlier this year, but didn’t say which partners are already using it. Dish has listed several case studies for its hospitality-focused TV platform, citing examples spanning healthcare groups, upscale hotel chains, off-campus student housing, RV parks, senior living facilities, and even a medium-security prison.

The Evolve set-back box also represents another example in which Dish has cozied up to Android TV. The Air TV Player, Dish’s new OTA-OTT combo device for cord-cutters, also runs Android TV.
