Angus Cloud, who portrayed drug dealer Fez on HBO drama Euphoria, died July 31 at age 25. No cause of death has been given, but Cloud’s family, in a statement, mentioned his battle with mental health, and shared that Angus’s father had recently died. 

“Last week he buried his father and intensely struggled with this loss,” the family said. “The only comfort we have is knowing Angus is now reunited with his dad, who was his best friend. Angus was open about his battle with mental health and we hope that his passing can be a reminder to others that they are not alone and should not fight this on their own in silence.”

His family added, “We hope the world remembers him for his humor, laughter and love for everyone.”

Born Conor Angus Cloud Hickey on July 10, 1998, in Oakland, Cloud was not an actor when he joined Euphoria. He had been spotted walking down the street in Manhattan by a casting scout. 

The third season of Euphoria has not begun shooting. 

“There was no one quite like Angus,” creator Sam Levinson said in a statement. “He was too special, too talented and way too young to leave us so soon. He also struggled, like many of us, with addiction and depression. I hope he knew how many hearts he touched. I loved him. I always will. Rest in peace and God Bless his family.”

HBO called Cloud “immensely talented.” 

“We are incredibly saddened to learn of the passing of Angus Cloud,” the network said in a statement. “He was immensely talented and a beloved part of the HBO and Euphoria family. We extend our deepest condolences to his friends and family during this difficult time.”

HBO has set a June 4 premiere date for its new original series The Idol, the latest series from Euphoria creator Sam Levinson. 

The series stars Lily-Rose Depp as a struggling pop star recovering from a nervous breakdown who meets up with a nightclub impresario with a sordid past who looks to resurrect her career and fame, according to the network. (For video, viewer discretion is advised.)

Grammy award-winning singer Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye also stars in the series along with Reza Fahim, Dan Levy, Joy Randolph and Hank Azaria.

The Idol is created and executive produced by Levinson, whose Euphoria drama series has won nine Emmy Awards for its first two seasons, including two for series star Zendaya in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category.

Tesfaye also serves as executive producer along with Fahim, Kevin Turen, Ashley Levinson, Joseph Epstein, Aaron Gilbert and Sara White.

Squid Game’s Lee Jung-jae stunned the television industry by winning the Emmy Award for best actor in a drama series, while Zendaya returned to the winner’s stage  with a best actress Emmy for her role in HBO’s Euphoria. 

Jung-jae’s win for his role as Seong Gi-Hun in Netflix’s thriller series is the first for an actor of Asian descent, beating out an impressive list of competitors including Jason Bateman (Ozark), Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul), Brian Cox (Succession) Adam Scott (Severance) and Jeremy Strong (Succession).

Zendaya took home the best actress in a drama series award for the second time in three years (she was not eligible in 2021), becoming the youngest two-time winner in Emmy history for her role as Rue in the HBO series Euphoria. Zendaya, now 26 years old, set the record by winning the 2020 Emmy in the category at the age of 24.

There were no surprises on the comedy front as Hacks’ Jean Smart and Ted Lasso’s Jason Sudeikis both repeated as winners in the best actress and best actor categories, respectively. ■   

HBO/HBO Max once again earned top honors for NAMIC Vision Awards, leading all distributors in total awards wins.

HBO/HBO Max led the industry for the sixth straight year by winning five NAMIC Vision Awards, which celebrates original, multiplatform television programming that reflects the ethnic and cultural diversity of the viewing audience. ESPN was the only other distributor earning multiple award wins with two. 

HBO’s Insecure was a repeat winner in the best comedy category, while Showtime's The Chi topped all competitors for the best drama award. Lifetime’s biopic on the life of gospel singer Mahalia Jackson – Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia – was the top choice in the Original Movie or Special category. 

“As our industry’s consumer base becomes increasingly diverse, culturally relevant content is central to our industry’s sustainability,” said NAMIC president and CEO A. Shuanise Washington in a statement. “The NAMIC Vision Awards importantly shines a light on programming that sets bold, new standards for inclusion by  reflecting the myriad culture, stories, and contributions of people from diverse backgrounds and walks  of life.”

The return of HBO’s Emmy-winning series Euphoria highlights an otherwise light schedule of new and returning scripted series debuting on cable and streaming services during the first week of 2021.

The eight-episode, second season of Euphoria debuts on January 9, with actress Zendaya returning in her Emmy-winning role as troubled teenager Rue. Euphoria also stars Hunter Schafer, Nika King, Eric Dane and Angus Cloud.

HBO’s drama series Euphoria will return for its second season on Jan. 9, the network announced Tuesday.

Zendaya, who won a 2020 Emmy for best actress in a drama series for her portrayal of troubled teenager Rue, returns for the show's sophomore campaign seeking to find hope while balancing the pressures of love, loss and addiction, said the network.

Also starring in the series are Hunter Schafer, Nika King, Eric Dane, Angus Cloud and Jacob Elordi.

Euphoria's executive producers include Zendaya, Sam Levinson, Ravi Nandan, Kevin Turen, Will Greenfield, Drake, Adel “Future” Nur, Zendaya, Hadas Mozes Lichtenstein, Ron Leshem and Daphna Levin. ■ 

HBO will premiere the second special from its Emmy-winning drama series Euphoria during a busy week for returning series premieres.

HBO’s Jan. 24 special, Euphoria: F*&k Anyone Who’s Not a Sea Blob, is the second holiday episode of the freshman drama series starring Emmy Award winning actress Zendaya.  

The episode follows Jules (Hunter Schafer) over the Christmas holiday as she reflects on the year, according to HBO.

HBO will premiere a special episode of its Emmy-winning drama series Euphoria this Sunday (Dec. 6).

The episode -- one of two specials slated for the freshman drama series -- will follow lead character Rue (played by Emmy-winner Zendaya) as she celebrates Christmas. Jules (Hunter Schafer) will also appear in the episode, said the network.

HBO Max subscribers can currently stream the episode, according to the streaming service.

A mix of new series, documentaries and new episodes from two Emmy award winning shows help usher in the month of December on cable and streaming services.

Hulu will debut its adaptation of the classic franchise The Hardy Boys on Dec. 4, while Showtime on Dec. 6 will premiere Your Honor, starring Emmy-award winning actor Bryan Cranston in his first series role since Breaking Bad.

On the sports documentary front, Showtime on Dec. 4 will explore the career of former boxing champion Hector ‘Macho’ Camacho in Macho: The Hector Camacho Story.

HBO on Dec. 6 will debut a special episode of its freshman series Euphoria, which stars Emmy-winning actress Zendaya, while the same night Showtime will premiere the 11th and final season of its Emmy-winning comedy series Shameless.

HBO will telecast two special episodes of its Emmy Award-winning series Euphoria beginning in December, the network said Monday.

The freshman series, which stars Emmy Award-winning actress Zendaya, will return for the first of two episodes on Dec. 6, according to the network. The episode, titled Trouble Don't Last Always, will follow Zendaya's character Rue as she celebrates Christmas, said HBO. The episode also stars Colman Domingo, who appeared in season one.

The network did not reveal the premiere date and title for the second episode.  HBO in July renewed Euphoria for a second season.

Netflix drew the most nominations for the 31st Annual GLAAD Media Awards, the organization announced Wednesday.

Netflix drew 15 nominations for GLAAD Media Awards, which recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community and the issues that affect their lives. HBO finished second with eight nominations -- including a best drama series nod for freshman series Euphoria (pictured), followed by broadcast networks ABC, NBC and CBS with four each, according to GLAAD.

Cable networks drew of 31 nominees, with streaming services receiving 22 nominations, and broadcast networks receiving 19 nominations.

The GLAAD Media Awards ceremonies will be held in New York at the Hilton Midtown on March 19 and in Los Angeles on April 16.

On June 16 HBO premieres its new drama Euphoria starring Zendaya, while Showtime debuts its crime drama City On The Hill. The first episode of the series, which stars Kevin Bacon and Aldis Hodge (pictured), is already available online.

With regard to returning shows, OWN debuts the fourth season of its drama series Queen Sugar on June 12 while Netflix premieres the third and final season of Netflix’s series Marvel’s Jessica Jones.

HBO has set a June 16 premiere date for its high school-themed drama Euphoria, the network said Thursday.

The eight-episode series stars Zendaya (Spider-Man: Homecoming) and follows a group of high school students as they navigate drugs, sex, identity, trauma, social media, love and friendship, according to HBO

Euphoria is executive produced by Sam Levinson, Drake, Future the Prince, Ravi Nandan, Kevin Turen, Hadas Mozes Lichtenstein, Ron Leshem, Daphna Levin, Tmira Yardeni, Mirit Toovi, Yoram Mokady, Gary Lennon and Jim Kleverweis.
