Dan Levy may have taken his talents to Netflix, but the show that sparked a bidding war for the Canadian TV creative, Up Schitt's Creek, is headed to Hulu. 

The Disney-controlled  JV on Thursday announced that all six seasons of the Emmy-winning sitcom will stream exclusively on the subscription service starting Oct. 3.

And it will no longer stream on Netflix, which had been the exclusive U.S. streaming home for Schitt's Creek since 2017. 

“Based on the number of Schitt’s Creek GIFs we Slack every day, it’s no surprise that we are absolutely thrilled to welcome Johnny, Moira, Alexis, ‘Daviiid’ and the wonderfully unique residents of Schitt’s Creek to Hulu,” said Hulu President Joe Earley. 

Schitt's Creek is a situation comedy about a suddenly broke video-store baron (Eugene Levy), his former soap star wife (Eugene Levy's former SCTV castmate, Catherine O'Hara) and their pampered adult children (Dan Levy and Annie Murphy), all suddenly stuck in an eponymously named small town and dealing with the realities of an un-monied lifestyle. 

The show was co-created by Dan Levy and his comedy-legend father, Eugene. Schitt's Creek debuted in the U.S. on Viacom CBS cable network Pop TV, which then licensed U.S. streaming rights to Netflix. From there, it took off. Schitt's Creek sparked bidding-war level demand among U.S. distributors in 2019, with Dan Levy ultimately signing a three-year pact with Disney's ABC Signature. 

Demand for the young producer and his show further escalated after Schitt's Creek swept the comedy categories at the 2020 Emmys, setting an Emmy record for most wins by a show in a season. 

Levy ended up signing a new overall deal with Netflix, which will begin in August, upon the expiration of his ABC Signature agreement. However, it was Hulu that will end up with his biggest creation to date. 

Hulu's rights will be exclusive to just U.S. streaming. The show has been syndicated on broadcast stations in the U.S. since 2020 by Lionsgate's Debmar Mercury unit. 

Meanwhile, on cable, Viacom CBS' Comedy Central began airing the show in 2020. 

Canadian sitcom Schitt’s Creek, suddenly a global sensation and a newly minted Emmy record holder, is now also the prime example of what can happen when a well-crafted, albeit initially obscure series gains exposure on a digital platform.

On Sunday, Schitt’s Creek took primetime Emmys for Outstanding Comedy Series, as well the top prizes for comedy writing and directing. It swept all four lead actor categories, with former SCTV castmates Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara winning “Actor” and “Actress” Emmys, and Daniel Levy and Annie Murphy taking the “Supporting Actor” and “Supporting Actress” statues. Before Sunday night, the series won “craft” Emmys for costumes and casting.

Say what you want about the declining relevance of the Emmy Awards, particularly in virtual format. This kind of sweeping, record-setting feat was never pulled off by M*A*S*H or Cheers or Friends or Seinfeld. (Read more about the show's night at the Emmys in this Mike Malone recap.)

Schitt’s Creek joined All in the Family, The Golden Girls and Will & Grace as only the fourth comedy series in which all the lead and supporting actors were recognized by Emmy. 

Based on Schitt's Creek and Schitt's Creek alone, Pop TV ranked third among all networks and platforms at the Primetime Emmys (behind only giants HBO and Netflix).

Where did this show come from?

Debuting in January 2015, Levy and his son Dan, the creative team behind Schitt’s Creek, envisioned some interest in this tale of a super-rich family who lose their fortune and are forced to move to a dumpy dead-end town they once purchased as a joke.

The Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC) commissioned the series. Then, after pitching the comedy at Mipcom in Cannes prior to its launch, ViacomCBS-owned TVGN, soon to be rebranded as Pop TV, decided Schitt’s Creek would fit its goal of attracting the “modern grownup,” specifically those viewers in their 30s and 40s who came of age in the 1980s and 1990s.

Pop TV touted the immediate merits of Schitt’s Creek. There was no real historical programming model for comparison, after all. Launching on Pop TV in 2015, the sitcom experienced consistent double-digit ratings growth via the traditional Nielsen ratings. At the same time, the accolades started mounting, including Canada’s ACRTA and Canadian Screen Awards. It was the first Canadian comedy to be nominated for a Critics’ Choice Award. 

Word of mouth spread; from Mariah Carey to Elton John publicly espoused their praise; even former First Lady Michelle Obama touted the merits of the fictional Rose clan. And then came Netflix, which began streaming the series’ repeats in 2017 and turned the cult favorite into a mass appeal hit.

Upon accepting the Series Emmy Sunday night, Eugene Levy included a shoutout to Netflix, citing the streaming service “for the spark that seemed to, you know, start everything.”

As the seasons progressed, the series evolved beyond a fish out of water comedy, and as the characters in the ensemble developed, so did the relationship between David (Dan Levy) and Patrick (Noah Reid). At the beginning, Schitt’s Creek immediately attracted attention by featuring David as an openly pansexual character, where his sexuality is simply accepted by all in any given relationship. When Patrick enters the scene in the middle of season three, there is an attraction between the two and their first kiss by season end. By season four, David finds himself navigating his first long-term relationship. And, in the series finale, the two wed in an emotional ceremony.

In what could not be better timing, meanwhile, Schitt’s Creek will launch into national syndication across the country beginning Monday, Sept. 28. Lionsgate’s Debmar-Mercury owns the domestic broadcast syndication rights to the series, which produced 80 episodes (six seasons). And the final season of the comedy, which concluded on Pop TV in April, will be available for streaming on Netflix on Wednesday, Oct. 7.

Schitt’s Creek can also be seen on the free CW Seed service and IMDb TV, while Comedy Central will air five consecutive episodes every Friday beginning Oct. 2 at 8 p.m. ET.

The series -- which ended its six-season run earlier this year -- won seven overall primetime Emmy Awards including best comedy series, beating out HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm and Insecure, Netflix's Dead to Me and The Kominsky Method, NBC's The Good Place, Prime Video's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and FX's What We Do in the Shadows.

Emmys: Photos From Television's Biggest Night

Eugene Levy took best actor honors, topping Anthony Anderson (Black-ish), Don Cheadle (Black Monday), Ted Danson (The Good Place), Michael Douglas (The Kominsky Method), and Ramy Youssef (Ramy). It was his first acting Emmy.

Daniel Levy won best supporting actor in a comedy series, while Annie Murphy won best supporting actress in a comedy series. 

Schitt’s Creek, which was nominated for 15 Emmys this year, also won Emmys for best writing in a comedy series and best directing in a comedy series. Overall, the series garnered nine Emmy awards this year, including two Creative Arts Emmy awards.

Pop's first and most-watched original series, the sitcom Schitt's Creek, has been renewed for a third, 13-episode series, ahead of the 8 p.m. ET/PT Wednesday, March 16, beginning of its second season. SCTV alums Catherine O'Hara and Eugene Levy star as the luckless Roses, who lose a fortune except for a dumpy town and motel where they re-settle.

The show was co-created and is written by Eugene Levy and his son, Daniel, who also stars, along with Annie Murphy. (Here's our review from when it launched in 2015.) The third season will air in 2017.

Pop said Schitt's Creek was its most-watched original series in total viewers and was the biggest draw on the network overall among viewers ages 18-34.

The ensemble cast also includes Chris Elliott and Jennifer Robertson as Roland and Jocelyn Schitt -- and they also star in a faux talk show companion digital series, Wake Up With The Schitt's, now available on Funny or Die.

Pop (the former TVGN) renewed its first original scripted series, the Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara comedy Schitt's Creek. The sitcom, about a spoiled formerly-rich family forced to make do living in a motel in a depressing town the dad bought years ago as a joke, will come back in 2016 with 13 episodes, the network said.

Created by Levy and his son, Daniel Levy, who also stars, the cast also features Chris Elliott and Annie Murphy. The season finale airs on Wednesday, May 6, at 10 p.m. A scan of February Nielsens show it ranged between 181,000 and 275,000 viewers on a live plus same day basis. The show, produced in Canada and airing on the CBC (which commissioned it), is distributed by ITV Studios Global Entertainment.

With SCTV’s Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara and, to a lesser extent, Chris Elliott on board, Canadian import Schitt’s Creek is a must for comedy fans. It’s well-written, nicely acted and directed and overcomes any trepidation you might have about the title. (Each episode is preceded by a warning from Pop, the former TVGN, about “scenes with coarse language.”) Levy’s son, Daniel, co-stars, and they are co-creators.

The Rose family were upper-1% rich but lost it all to a corrupt accountant — except for a depressing town called Schitt’s Creek that Johnny Rose (Eugene Levy) bought as a joke. They are forced to live there until they can, maybe, sell it to some other sucker.

Chris Elliott is the annoying mayor, Roland Schitt, to give you an idea. It’s Green Acres or Newhart revisited, with clever dialogue and the occasional broad joke, like in episode three, when Levy confronts Elliott over a road sign that’s unintentionally funny and vulgar. Levy and O’Hara’s bad parenting and the 20-something spoiled kids’ squabbles make a fun dynamic when they’re forced to live in adjoining rooms in a crappy motel, where the doors go missing or won’t lock.

Pop network will debut in 2015 its first scripted comedy series Schitt’s Creek, said network officials.

Pop, the rebranded TVGN network, will commission 13 episodes of the series, starring Eugene Levy (American Pie, Best In Show, SCTV), Catherine O’Hara (Home Alone, Best In Show) and Chris Elliott (How I Met Your Mother). The series centers on a formerly filthy rich video store magnate, his soap opera wife and their two kids who suddenly find themselves broke and forced to live in a small, depressing town, said network officials.

Eugene Levy, Daniel Levy, Andrew Barnsley, Fred Levy and Ben Feigin will serve as executive producers of the CBC-commissioned series produced by Not A Real Company Productions Inc.

“This show answers the question — what would the Kardashians do if they woke up one day, completely broke?,” said Brad Schwartz, President of Entertainment and Media, POP in a statement. “Not only is this project a clever cultural commentary where the 1 percent is suddenly the 99, but it fits right in the heart of everything we’re building at our new network. It’s a dream cast, it’s hysterically funny, and it’s sure to pop.”
