As part of its week-long activation for Super Bowl LVIII, Paramount Global took Drew Barrymore, Entertainment Tonight and Inside Edition to Las Vegas to shoot shows and segments on the ground before, during and after the big game.

All three CBS Media Ventures-produced shows set up shop in front of the Bellagio fountains to talk football, parties, celebrity, and of course, the Taylor Swift of it all.

“Entertainment Tonight always covers the Super Bowl; traditionally, it’s the highest-rated week of the year for us. And this year, it’s even bigger with Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce and Usher as the half-time performance,” Erin Johnson, executive producer of Entertainment Tonight, said.

CBS Sports, CBS Mornings and Drew Barrymore shared CBS’ main stage outside of the Bellagio while Entertainment Tonight, Inside Edition and CBS’ The Talk all shot episodes from another near-by space.

“The stage we were on had that iconic CBS Sports desk. We put our graphics in there and brought all of our props and everything in,” said Jason Kurtz, executive producer of Drew Barrymore.

(Image credit: CBS Media Ventures/'The Drew Barrymore Show')

Anchors Kevin Frazier and Nischelle Turner began hosting Entertainment Tonight in front of the Bellagio fountains on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and the show has scored interviews with half-time performer Usher as well as The Rock and Justin Hartley, whose new show, Tracker, will premiere right after Super Bowl LVIII on CBS.

“We love taking the show on the road,” Johnson said. “Traveling the show has been a big priority of mine since I began executive producing the show in 2019. It brings a different energy to what we’re doing. Entertainment is in the name – we like to be on location.”

Keeping the corporate synergy alive, Barrymore appeared on both ET and Inside Edition. She even made a little news on ET, talking about how she’s always texting Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston about doing a movie together.

(Image credit: CBS Media Ventures/'Entertainment Tonight')

“We’re excited for people to check out our Las Vegas residency this week. We’re talking to lots of stars – we have shoots scheduled from 8 a.m. to 1 a.m. as we cover all of the star-studded parties. That content will play on the show and online all week,” Johnson said.

Similarly, Inside Edition is producing shows from Vegas on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, with Deborah Norville anchoring at the Bellagio set and Lisa Guerrero, who reports Inside Edition’s investigative stories, in the field. Besides her work with IE, Guerrero formerly worked as an NFL sideline reporter for ABC News and was a former NFL cheerleader, so “she knows football,” Inside Edition executive producer Charles Lachman said.

Inside Edition’s special Super Bowl LVIII correspondent this year is Wheel of Fortune’s Maggie Sajak, daughter of Wheel host Pat Sajak. Previously, Simone Biles, Gabrielle Douglas and Nancy Kerrigan have joined the show in this role.

“Maggie’s adding a lot of her personality and charm to our coverage. We have a dynamic trio of on-air personalities covering this,” Lachman said.

(Image credit: CBS Media Ventures/'Inside Edition')

Just as it is for ET, the Super Bowl tends to be one of Inside Edition’s highest-rated weeks so the show pays a lot of attention to it.

“We’re known for our spin on things; we call it the Inside Edition take,” Lachman said. “We really focus on what’s happening behind the scenes. We really want to deliver what people haven’t already seen.”

Continuing with the cross-promotion, Norville made her way over to CBS Mornings where she spoke with Norah O’Donnell, and Barrymore joined Inside Edition to chat with Norville.

As for Drew Barrymore, the talker shot two half-hour episodes in Las Vegas on Wednesday, and those are airing on Thursday and Friday. Drew Barrymore airs each day as two half-hours so the second half-hour of each day was pre-taped in New York with relevant features such as cooking, tail-gating and games.

Barrymore’s guests in Vegas are Boomer Esiasan and Greg Gianotti of WFAN’s morning drive time sports radio program, “Boomer & Gio,” on Thursday, and CBS Sports’ NFL broadcasters Tracy Wilson and Tony Romo on Friday.

“We’ve been able to combine our pop-culture-driven Drews News with the sports of it all,” Kurtz said. “Pop culture and celebrity is a lot of what the Super Bowl is.”

All three EPs said they loved the experience of being live on the ground in Las Vegas with their peers.

“This experience has been amazing and it’s been really great to collaborate with all of the other executive producers,” Kurtz said. “With all of the stages on top of each other, it’s been easy to be nimble.”

The duo are the first Black pair to lead an entertainment newsmagazine and Turner is the first Black woman to host CBS Media Ventures’ access magazine.

The 49th annual awards show will air live on Friday, June 24 at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT on CBS and will stream on Paramount Plus.

The Daytime Emmys return to a live format at the Pasadena Civic Center in Pasadena, Calif., after two years of virtual ceremonies due to the pandemic. The show also departed broadcast for several years, before returning to CBS in 2020. The show has aired a total of 16 times on CBS.

Last year, New York City-based NATAS and the Los Angeles-based Television Academy said they were realigning the Daytime and Primetime Emmy Awards to be organized by content genre, as opposed to scheduled program airtime, which makes less sense in an environment dictated by streaming and on-demand programming. This year will be the first time that children’s programming will be moved into its own ceremony, the Children’s and Family Emmy Awards.

The Daytime Emmys returned to broadcast television in 2020, when the show aired on CBS with all hosts, presenters and recipients appearing on Zoom during the height of the pandemic lockdown. Prior to that, the Daytime Emmys hadn’t aired on a broadcast network since 2011, when it last ran on CBS. In 2012 and 2013, it aired on HLN and the show moved to Pop TV in 2015.

After that, the show moved to online streams on such platforms as YouTube, Facebook and KNEKT-TV. But with the quarantine causing the stoppage of all live-action production, broadcast networks needed content, which opened the door to the Daytime Emmys’ return to broadcast television.

The Creative Arts and Lifestyle Emmys will stream live at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT on Saturday, June 18, at WatchTheEmmys.TV and via The Emmys apps for iOS, tvOS, Android, FireTV and Roku (see the full list at full list at apps.theemmys.tv).

The 49th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards is produced by NATAS and Associated Television International (ATI), which produced Daytime Emmy Award ceremonies on The CW in 2009 and on CBS in 2010, 2011, 2020 and 2021. Adam Sharp and Steve Ulrich are executive producers from NATAS, while David McKenzie is executive producer from ATI. ■

Four shows tied at a 0.7: Warner Bros.’ 2 Broke Girls, which lost 13% to tie Warner Bros.’ Mom and Mike & Molly and Disney’s Black-ish, all of which broke even.

Students studying broadcast journalism usually want to be the next Diane Sawyer or Anderson Cooper. Not Erin Johnson, executive producer of CBS Media Ventures’ syndicated entertainment magazine Entertainment Tonight. She always wanted the job she has right now.

Johnson started her TV career as an intern at a station close to home in Dayton, Ohio, and quickly became a producer. But she always knew she wanted to be in entertainment journalism, so she kept looking for ways to get to Los Angeles. A call to a former co-worker who had moved to San Diego got her to Southern California as the executive producer for a local morning news show. Within the year, she had found a temporary job as a senior producer on Fox’s syndicated program, Dish Nation, which led to a permanent gig at one of the show’s producers, Studio City, where she led marketing campaigns and cut trailers for several syndicated shows.

From there, she moved to a job at Sony Pictures Television’s Queen Latifah, which aired on the CBS Television Stations in the country’s top markets. Through that connection, her dream job landed in her lap: CBS Television Distribution, now CMV, reached out to see if she would want to join ET’s digital team. She started as ET’s director of digital video and programming in 2014. She was promoted to senior producer in 2015, co-executive producer in 2017 and executive producer in June 2019.

Johnson chatted with Multichannel News contributor Paige Albiniak about producing celebrity news in a pandemic, how she approaches producing entertainment news for social media and the value of Zoom.

What were some of the key things you did when you joined ET to create growth on digital platforms? With my background in marketing, I learned how to listen to an audience. I came to ET at a time when digital was being more prioritized so I had the opportunity to overhaul the digital business. The TV show only has a limited amount of time and you can’t always get into things as much as you can on the digital side. On digital platforms, we can let pieces breathe and tell the stories in unique ways that are additive for our audience. I think what brought my success on the digital side was embracing the content ET had always been doing and putting a different type of spotlight on it.

How do you decide which content is going to live where and in what format? We pay close attention to audiences on those platforms and we listen to what they want. So if we’re going to do a sit-down interview with Oprah, for example, we discuss what we need for the TV piece, and then for Instagram and other social media platforms. We always go into those shoots with a plan. I’ve seen that evolve in my time here at ET. It’s now something we talk about every single time. We circle up with people from each arm of our business to make sure everyone is getting what they need.

What would you say is the next platform for ET? I really want us to do more on TikTok — it’s gotten me through quarantine. It’s a real opportunity to introduce ET to a completely different audience. I actually had an interview with a social media producer whose responsibility would be TikTok. It’s hard to expect the person running Instagram to also run TikTok. You need to have people in place to focus on the right goals and initiatives for that specific platform.

BONUS FIVE

What are you binge-watching? Friday Night Lights
All-time favorite TV shows? The Office, The Newsroom, The Golden Girls, Insecure, Breaking Bad
Favorite podcasts? The Daily, Every Little Thing
Books on nightstand/Kindle? Untamed by Glennon Doyle; The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid.
Travel bucket list? Literally anywhere. Just get me out of my house.

How have you managed to produce interesting celebrity news during a pandemic in which there were no live events? I’ve been incredibly proud of how this team has risen to the challenge of still making the show still very interesting. We’re really pushing ourselves and we’ve found ways to do interviews in person. There are some positives to Zoom. Some stars are more comfortable in that setting. And we’ve gotten cool house tours on Zoom.

What do you think you have learned during the pandemic that you’ll continue to do post-pandemic? Even though we all have a love-hate relationship with Zoom, I think we’ll keep using it. We have offices here in L.A., in New York and in Nashville. We jump on Zooms so often and I see that behavior continuing when we’re back in the office. It gives us a way to communicate so that we’re working in lockstep together even though we’re apart.
