HBO's The Game Of Thrones has reclaimed its crown as the best drama on television, winning the Emmy for best drama series.

The fantasy series, which won the best drama Emmy in 2015 and 2016 before being declared ineligible for the award in 2017, beat out Netflix's Stranger Things and The Crown, FX's The Americans, Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale, NBC's This Is Us and HBO's Westworld for top honors during NBC's live Emmy telecast.  

Overall Game Of Thrones won nine combined Primetime and Creative Emmys, the most of any TV or streaming show, according to the TV Academy.

HBO took home the first drama-themed Emmys of the night with Peter Dinklage winning the statuette for outstanding supporting actor and Thandie Newton garnering best supporting actress.

Dinklage (Game Of Thrones) defeated fellow series actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Mandy Patinkin (Homeland), David Harbour (Stranger Things), Matt Smith (The Crown) and Joseph Fiennes (The Handmaid’s Tale) in the category. 

Newton topped three actresses from The Handmaid’s Tale (Yvonne Strahovski, Alexis Bledel, and last year’s winner in the category Ann Dowd) as well as Vanessa Kirby (The Crown), Lena Headly (Game of Thrones) and Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things) in winning her first Emmy for her role as Maeve in Westworld.

Veteran actor Henry Winkler was the surprise Emmy winner in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in A Comedy Series category, the first award presented during NBC’s Emmy Awards telecast.

Winkler, who portrayed Gene Cousineau in HBO’s freshman series Barry, upset last year’s winner Alec Baldwin, who portrayed President Donald Trump on NBC’s Saturday Night Live. Also nominated in the category was Atlanta’s Brian Tyree Henry, Basket’s Louie Anderson, Saturday Night Live’s Kenan Thompson, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s Tony Shalhoub and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’s Titus Burgess.

The Emmy win is the first for Winkler, who had been nominated previously for his role as Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli on ABC's 1970's sitcom Happy Days.

Alex Bornstein (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) took home the Emmy for the Outstanding Supporting actress In a Comedy Series, besting Zazie Beetz (Atlanta), Laurie Metcalf (Roseanne) Leslie Jones (Saturday Night Live), Betty Gilpin (GLOW), Aidy Bryant and Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live); and Megan Mullally (Will & Grace)
