fuboTV, the self-described “sports-first” virtual MVPD, said its feed of the Real Madrid-FC Barcelona match on Saturday (Dec. 1) netted 62,000 concurrent U.S. views across its platforms and CDNs.

fuboTV’s live feed – available through its carriage of beIN Sports – also compiled about 459,000 U.S. desktop and mobile site sessions. The service said that was a record for its live coverage of the game between the rival La Liga clubs  – called ‘El Clásico’ whenever it occurs, despite competition for it via other OTT-TV services, including Sling TV, PlayStation Vue and Verizon’s go90, which offered it for free.

fuboTV’s stream of the game appeared to perform better than the contest in April, when some subs complained about sign-on troubles and other streaming-related issues.

As noted in this week’s cover story in Multichannel News, fuboTV has been rebuilding its platform in-house rather than leaning on one that is largely based on outsourced products. The company expects to complete the rebuild by the end of 2017, if not earlier.

“I think we’re a cross-breed between a Sling-type service and BAM Tech,” fuboTV cofounder and CEO David Gandler said.

fuboTV, which launched service in January 2015,  ended Q2 2016 with 71,170 subscribers.

FuboTV’s coverage of Saturday’s La Liga matchup between FC Barcelona and  Real Madrid (via BeIN Sports), a game between rival clubs commonly called “El Clasico,” appeared to run into sign-on trouble and other streaming-related  issues as subscribers took to Twitter to let off steam.

FuboTV later tweeted that subscribers on PCs should try to use the Chrome browser or Chrome Incognito to login, which seemed to work for  some subscribers.

Multichannel News has asked an official with FuboTV for more detail about the technical issues that arose during the game.

Update: fuboTV issued this statement: "Due to high demand we had an unexpected technical issue yesterday that led to an interruption in service for some of our users. The issue lasted approximately 1.5 hours, which unfortunately coincided with a popular El Clasico match, and it was resolved as soon as possible. We are giving a credit to all subscribers who were impacted, and making significant investments into our infrastructure, taking all necessary steps so that this never happens again. It is the company's highest priority to ensure that our service is reliable and to provide a positive experience for our customers."

FuboTV subscribers will receive a $15 credit that will be applied in $5 monthly increments through July.

Though the timing of a streaming issues is never good for subscribers, this one happened to come during a matchup with significant global appeal. (Real Madrid won the match, 2-1, with a late goal from superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.)

fuboTV, which has a subscriber base of  40,000-plus, has raised $20.58 million so far, according to CrunchBase.

 The millennials-focused service starts at $9.99 per month and offers live sporting events via distribution deals with partners such as beIN SPORTS, GolTV, Univision Deportes and Benfica TV. It also has  distribution deals with Univision Communications, Pivot and Revolt Media & TV that recently added 15 networks to its lineup.

beIN Sports netted growth with both its Spanish- and English-language networks' coverage of Sunday's El Clasico match.

Together, the services averaged 2.12 million watchers, according to Nielsen data, as FC Barcelona edged Real Mardrid 2-1 to extend its lead atop of La Liga to four points behind Luis Suarez's goal (pictured) in the 56th minute

The match delivered an average of 1.35 million total viewers on beIN Sports en Espanol and 767,000 total viewers on beIN Sports English, according to Nielsen.

Perhaps there are more Stateside Barca backers than Los Blancos supporters, as beIN Sports' coverage on March 22 jumped  64% with the Spanish-language service and 16% on the Anglo side from its presentation of Real Madrid's 3-1 win over FC Bacelona on Oct. 25, 2014. The clubs feature two of the most accomplished futbolers on the planet with FC Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ratings peaked during the 5:30 p.m (ET) quarter hour on beIN Sports English with 968,000. while beIN en Espanol tallied 1.69 million watchers during that time.

In addition to the usual bragging rights, the top spot in La Liga is on the line at El Clasico from Camp Nou on Sunday.

FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi will engage rival Real Madrid at 4 p.m. (ET), with beIN Sports, beIN Sports en Espanol and beIn Connect covering the action. The hosts lead their archrivals, which won the first encounter this season on Oct. 25, 2014 by a 3-1 count, including a penalty kick tally by Ballan D’or winner, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ahead of Sunday’s match, Barcelona, whose marker last October came courtesy of Brazilian international Neymar, has risen past Madrid atop the La Liga table, 65 points to 64, each having played 27 matches.  

On the English-language side of the mic, Ray Hudson and Phil Schoen will call the action from Barcelona, while Jose Hernandez and Eduardo Biscayart have the honors in Spanish..
